Thoughts on OCZ Vertex 3

I am thinking of grabbing an OCZ Vertex 3 but I am hesitant from some reviews I have read. I have the option of getting the OCZ Vertex 3 brand new from tiger direct or getting a used intel 520 120g or a used OCZ Agility 3 BNIB but from another member here. I am concerned about buying a used ssd just on the fact I see a lot of reviews saying they had to replace them through exchange with the store they bought it from or RMA and if I get a used one I may be possibly screwed as far as that goes. So I want to secure myself for any situation that may lead to me having to replace it.

They have a dodgy past and reputation for sure. Lots of people have lost data and or a drive or two but not always. Things seem a tad up lately on the OCZ side but I still don't trust them. I'd go for a Samsung 840 Pro personally but they had firmware issues too lately iirc. I still say the Intel X-25m series is the most stable, solid, SSD ever built to this day though.
 
It has a 3 year warranty. Just backup your data like you should be doing anyway and you will alright.

It seems to me that when OCZ is mentioned you get about half the people saying they are garbage and stay away. The other half will say they have had no problems with OCZ and they are great SSDs.

I personally love my Vertex 4 and have had no problems with it. I backup my data daily.

I cannot recommend that Vertex 3 these days on account of it being a Sandforce-based SSD that's not from Intel. In addition, there is the questionable customer support and reliability history of that brand's products.
 
I've personally never had a problem with them. From what I've heard, however, I'm probably one of the lucky ones.
 
I have a Vertex 3 MI 120GB and a 90GB Vertex 3. I've had the 120 since 2011 and have had no problems with it. The 90GB one is much newer. Heck, I have their DDR3 in my second rig since 2009 and its still solid.
 
Why are you looking at a Vertex 3?

Why not a better/newer drive like the OCZ Vector, Samsung 840 Pro, or Corsair Neutron GTX, etc?

Unless you can get a Vertex 3 for like 50% or less of retail, I would HIGHLY suggest getting something else.
 
Here are your choices if price is paramount: Crucial M4 or Samsung 830

If you can afford it: Samsung 840 Pro
 
I am just trying to get an ssd. I am using an old regular hdd atm and times are hard so my price limite is kind of low

And I am trying to get the fastest I can get for around 100 bucks
 
I have an option of getting an intel 520 120g for like 80 bucks used. But I am concerned for warranty purposes. Does anyone know how that works? Can someone who bought a intel ssd used and if it is still under warranty can they try to do an rma or is it only for the original owner?
 
i own 3 vertex 2's and have installed a few vertex 4's in customers machines since they came out and I haven't had a single problem with any of them. I believe i am like 6 for 6 on good working drives. I have never understood the problem with sandforce.

Except that the Vertex 4 is not Sandforce-based.
 
Give me some good models to get with 500 write and read for 100 - 200 please NO OCZ though
 
I have a bunch of agility's and vertex's and a solid....out of the 10 or 12 drives I've bounght (all gen 1) I've had about 25% die within the first year. No problems with RMA. After that they are rock solid.

In other news, I've killed a kingston V100 at work as well as an Mtron Pro SLC drive.

YMMV of course.

I bought a vertex2 90 a while back for dads new box & JUST got around to installing it. Been about 2 weeks but no issues so far.
 
I have had one since they came out and love it. Never had any issues. It is noticeably faster than my buddies Crucial.

Yah I would really like to get a 520 180g but the only way I can get it right now is for 200 online but it was on sale recently for 130 so I would feel dumb if I got it for 200 and then it would to go on sale 2 weeks later or some crap. I am trying to avoid online ordering as well in case I have any issues with it and need to return it. Looking at the kingstone HyperX but it looks like they only go from 120 - 240g. I would really like to try and get like a 180g or higher since my C drive is currently exceeding 150g. And I am possibly able to spend 200 but trying not to so I can possibly get something else I may want or need.
 
Check out the Corsair Force GS, they have the odd 180gb and 360gb sizes.

Although I would stick with a non-sandforce drive myself. Check out the Corsair Neutron, seriously, or the Samsung 840, those are both great latest gen drives.

Go for the largest capacity your money will buy. I would highly recommend you target a 240-256GB size drive since your current C:\ is exceeding 150GB. Going to 180GB doesn't leave a whole lot of room for things you would like to store on the faster SSD, such as frequently used apps, the game(s) you play the most, etc.

I did exactly this when I upgraded my laptop to an SSD. Was using 132GB, thought about trimming things down so I could get a 120-128GB, or leaving as is and go with a 160-180GB,but I decided to get the larger 240GB (HyperX 3K) for future growth. Granted, this is a laptop with no secondary HDD for storage, but I suppose I'm merely trying to say to plan accordingly for the future since SSDs are not even close to $/GB as a spindle drive, thus not as quick to be replaced for a majority of us.

Depends on the manufacturer and controller model. Most issues have been taken care of with newer firmware releases, but it is ultimately up to the manufacturer to get the newer firmware released.
 
fwiw, running 4 x Vertex 3's MI's since the release in R0... no issues here.

True. I have been debating that as well. But I will be receiving a 60g 520 in a few weeks from a gaming event I participated in. So in the end if I get a 180g I will have a 60g for storage or use the 60g for boot up and the other drive for storage. I am thinking I may try to get a samsung 840 non pro possibly. Still debating what to do before I head to the store.

IIRC, Intel took a year to validate the firmware on the 520. If you want a Sandforce drive, get a drive from the people who have tested the hell out of it.
 
How does warrantys work with used ssds from all companies? Do you need to be the original owner or does warranty transfer to rebuyer like with evga gpus?
