I simply used the motherboard mounting holes and some stainless steel standoffs about 3/4 of an inch tall.

Jason what OS are you using? I just tried Vista with 3x 9800GX2s and it wont boot.

Windows Vista will not work with more than 5 GPUs (to my memory)

If your running 3x (or more) duel GPU cards, XP is the only way to go.
 
OT - if you use 32 bit don't you have more than 4GB of memory addressed with the vid cards alone? What happens??
 
Ah, I thought it was 4GB less vid card memory, etc.

OP, I'm speechless - that is an amazing contribution you are making and great job with organization, planning, and so on!
 
I initially used XP x32 while waiting for my x64 copies to arrive. I know for a fact XP Pro x32 will see and use all 8 GPUs just fine.

Four 9800GX2s and an MSI K9A2 Platinum use up 3GB of RAM address space under 32-bit WinXP. If you're only running F@H on the GPUs, then 1GB of available RAM is plenty (and you can save a little money building the system). However, I was also running other DC projects on the CPU, so I needed more RAM and upgraded to WinXP x64.
 
My machines use about 1.25 GB of RAM under full load. RAM is so inexpensive nowadays I just put 2 GB in the folding machines. $20.00 for a RAM stick is way down on my list of expenditures.

Hopefully, our children, and future generations can grow up in a world where the only place they hear of these diseases is in a history book.

Wow. I must say that that is impressive. I thought I was pretty fly when I started folding on my 4870, but wow. So many GTX 295s! I hope you are WAYYYY up there on the ranks of whatever folding team you are on. I am happy that someone is spending that much money and time to look for cures to theses diseases. I too hope that the only place we see these diseases is in our children's history books.

That's about my points for a year. Wow dude. Again, that is just sick. Congratulations on 1) Having the money to invest and 2) Caring enough to invest your time and money into the cause.
 
Hey guys I have a question for the [H]orde.

For my third rack I'm buying two PSUs and tying them together. There's a couple of reasons for this. 1) the 1250W Cooler Master I used in my previous two builds is out of stock, 2) I'm pushing them very hard and 3) I'm curious about it. Btw the 1250 Cooler Masters have not given me any problems running my nodes at all...

From reading the reviews here on [H] I selected the Antec Signature SG850 850W supply.

Does anyone have any links to clear and recent articles on tying ATX power supplies together? Some of the ones I've come up with are years and years old.

I have a system powered with two ATX PSUs but they're not actually tied together. Just to be certain, are you asking how to connect both PSUs so they can start and shut off simultaneously?
 
Ahh, I am still using the case from my two supply unit, If I remember right, I have a little solenoid or somehting that detects power from on of the lines on the first PSU and uses it as an on signal to cross the green and black ( I think it was )

Its been years since I used that setup tho, let me see if I still have the piece that joined them, I can give a pic and show you whats up. ITs old tho, me and my bro built it back in the day, but the same ideas should still apply

Big time WOW Atlas Folder :eek: The only other things I can utter are "very, very impressive :D and thank you for folding :p (it's hard to type one finger while drooling all over the keyboard :rolleyes:)

OBTW IMHO you are very inspirational getting other people to join DCing (F@H, WCG, etc) . ;)

I'm using a cable like nitrobass24 linked to connect the two PC Power & Cooling 750W PSUs in my system. I was having issues getting XP to consistently detect all cards with the PSUs unlinked, but the cable solved those issues.

I think two Antec 850W will be overkill. I did some testing with a Kill A Watt, and while folding the first PSU draws about 645W and the second draws 325W from the wall. That's with the first PSU powering two cards and everything else, and the second PSU only providing the PCI-E power connections for the remaining two cards. I've since connected the second PSU to the 4-pin auxiliary power connector on the mobo to try to balance them a little more. I haven't fully retested, but the first PSU is now down to 560W under load.
 
son of a bitch, they already have a cable for that? Damn, that would have been so much less stressful the firstime I clicked on than with my unit lol
 
I have 3 9800GX2 folding on Vista no problem.

What is the issue people are seeing?
 
Honestly if I hadn't read this thread I would have never known there was an issue.

I had not restarted that PC since I installed the GPUs. Literally, a couple weeks ago, I installed the hardware, installed the drivers, started GPU2, and hadn't touched it since.

Rebooted today to play with the CPU OC. Sure enough, can't enable the 6th monitor anymore. I try to enable it either in Windows display properties or Nvidia Control Panel, it appears to "try" to enable it, then gives up and leaves me with 5.

So, in theory, for a dedicated folder, you can get 6 GPUs running in Vista. As long as you never reboot :).
