Hes got some thing for Huntingtons disease, I havent read his story but its on that site.
I mean thats conviction if Ive ever seen it. Those rigs are soley for folding.

Since that's his home setup that he says he games on occasionally, he might as well make use of all three cards when gaming. The dedicated box at the top of the page has no bridge.

Badass setup, if I do say so myself...and I do say so.

You cant SLI 3 295's. Only two.
 
Most you can accomplish with SLI is 4 GPUs (quad SLI), so that's two GTX295 cards.
 
A lot of folks misunderstand that SLI bridge on my home computer. It's actually just a 2-card bridge that simply passes over the middle card.

man that just makes me want to spend my 1500 dollar tax rebate just building a system like that... if only i wasnt 2800 dollars in debt i would.. nice work atlas.. taking the whole e-penis statement to a new level.. :p
 
I'm taken aback, not by your setup, but by your reason to build it. Of all the reasons to fold, yours is probably the most heartfelt and strongest of all. Your dedication is easily seen through your investment into this field of research, but pales in comparison to your direct association with the disease.
 
Honestly, Pande and his crew should ask you do re-write some of the copy on their website. While I was reading the folding basics and the F@H basics sections I just kept thinking, none of this is news to me, but I can never explain things this well when I try to explain it to people. Good job man and keep it up.

When you game on your gaming boxen... do you have your 3rd card set up to run physix calculations?

I am not sure if I am asking this correctly... I saw another guy here do this. When you configure your nVidia card, you can have your third card, without using SLI, run physix stuff. It is supposed to help out in gaming.

I agree with Wheresatom - your descriptions of proteins, folding, and its direct connection to disease are far more eloquent and accessible then those available at the Stanford website. While I think it's unlikely that they would accept any re-write of their information, I plan on sending prospective folders to your website instead, to convince them of the worthiness of the cause.

Newer drivers permit you to install a third nVidia card for physics calculations and it doesn't have to be an identical card. Apparently an older card will do.

I would guess that you could run one card, a 260, 280, 295, or something like that, and have a second card in the same boxen, like a 8800GT, and have the second card do the physics calculations.

Would this work?

Yes, it should work. I'm sure there are a few people in the nVidia subforum who have done it already but I haven't checked in there in a while.
 
I doubt it really helps that much

especially with the 295's

I mean games that are out just are not that taxing on i7 systems with GTX xxx SLI setups.

I can't really say since I don't play games. I only know what is possible with today's tech. Best thing to do is to try it oneself, or read others' experiences with the components in question. I'm actually quite curious how effective it would be.
 
I've read a bit about the setup and I'm very interested to learn about the challenges on building a rackmount farm with 8xGPU per rack. I appreciate the amount of dedication involved in the project and to fight Huntington's disease.

 
Hey guys, thank you for the kind words. I hope that my biggest contribution to folding is to help recruit new people into it.

My mother and father taught me proper English and how to write effectively. I'll tell them that you approve of my descriptions of Huntington's Disease and F@H. ;)

This woman has Huntington's. My father is worse. Watch a couple of minutes of this video and realize that the only thing that's wrong with her is that her body is misfolding proteins. If it weren't for that, she'd be just like any other woman. Her brain is more or less working normally.

I received the components for a second node today except for the 295's which have been actually hard to come by. But newegg finally posted some a couple of days ago and I managed to snag four more. They should arrive on Monday. So, Monday night I hope to be putting a second rack together and push my ppd contribution up to ~140k or so with 11 GTX295 boards. At that time I'll get some new photographs of the system in the 19" rack chassis.

I have never tried to get a specified board set up to run PhysX since when I game I play MMOs and they wouldn't benefit.

I use Windows XP x64 for the rack machines' OS. I love Linux and would use it in a heartbeat if it weren't such a hassle getting it all working with F@H. Vista is bugged with dual GPU cards at the moment.

The rackmount shelf is Middle Atlantic Clamping Rackshelf. The rack I'm using is also a Middle Atlantic "Slim-5". I have about $1,000.00 in the rack, shelves, and 20A power stips for the rack.

Getting 8 GPUs to work in Windows XP 32/64 is just as easy as plugging them in. They are enumerated just fine. XP also has the benefit of not requiring display dongles to enable the desktops.

No, there's no way to make your points to to a specific cause or disease. My web site says "Fighting Huntington's Disease with Folding@home" but there's a bit of poetic license there. :)

All I could say is that I'm really floored by the amount of investment and effort you're devoting for the cause. It's great to see such rare commitment and you're guaranteed to inspire more people to at least look into what we're doing. :)

In regards to XP, when it comes to F@H, GPU client or otherwise it really is superior to Vista for a number of reasons. The only thing that Vista has over XP is the CPU-utilization, but that is more illusion than anything else since Task Manager is misreporting CPU utilization in XP.

Windows 7 is not ready yet, at least not when I had run it for a few weeks. I had problems with VMware which I couldn't get to work well and every time I rebooted or my system crashed, the clients lost their work. So, it's XP on all my systems for now until MS gets all the kinks ironed out of their new OS.

With recent nvidia drivers, XP shows 0% utilization. Not sure about AMD though.

I'm still using old drivers because I remember reading that newer drivers have a small performance drop. CPU utilization doesn't concern me much since I always devote a whole core to the GPUs in my system. However, if I find out that installing the newest drivers (just released) doesn't result in a performance impact, I'll make the switch.

I see your problem. They aren't plugged in. You will see a HUGE jump in PPD if you plug it in and turn it on.

Anyway, nice setup there man. If I weren't saving for a house I might could convince the SWIMBO this is a good idea, but as it is, I need to apply my knowledge of the word "no." Nice setup.
