Resistance is? All the reviews lament VF5 not being playable online, that's for sure!

Either way, the point still stands: the value's just not there. I guess michaelo bought his PS3 without looking online at all and is bitter he wasted so much more money for very little compared to a far cheaper 360 with several games included in the lower price ;).

OK its time for a Fan Boy vs Fan Boy post. LOLLLL

Elite 360 + HD-DVD Drive + Wireless adapter = ?

PS3 = ?

Some will argue the wirless need not apply, but for me it does.

The amount of rolling eyes in this thread is hideous.

Good 360 games:
GOW
RB6V
Crackdown
PGR3
GRAW
GRAW 2
Oblivion
Guitar Hero 2
PDZ
DOA4
COD2
COD3
Dead Rising

RB6V = Coming to PS3 soon. (maybe more content?)
Oblivion = Also on the PS3
GH1 and GH2 = On the PS2 thus is also on the PS3.
COD3 = Alson on the PS3

+ MotorStorm + VF5 + Resistance + TK5DR (I love this game :D )

Lair is to be out in July (I think this looks awsome)

SpdierMan3 will be both for 360 and PS3, but the PS3 version has more content. Playing through entire game as hob goblin.

littlebigplanet

.... actually read up on CallingAllCars (downloadable game) and it sounds like multiplayer is actually gonna be a lot of fun.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma... demo is freaken great... trying to beat Ultra-Hard

Plus... all future cross platform titles... usually are which... identical.

Lastly, quality. To me is a huge factor. To see how many people have gone through hell trying to get a X360 that works has turned me off from buying one. To send my console away for up to 2 weeks and get something back that doesnt work would piss me off to no end :D

Good to see you bought a PS3, please add me to your friends :) PSN: BloodHarvest

Who needs the Elite? It's... black... ok? Who cares?

Lemme show you where I'm coming from... first off, I'm not a fan-kid, and couldn't care less about the manufacturer between Sony and Microsoft. Before purchasing today, I flip-flopped back and forth like a stranded fish between the two for awhile. What it came down to was a few questions:

1) Who had the best price?

2) Is the quality comparable?

3) Which has the games I care about?

Let me also answer these:

1. By far and away, Microsoft did. I did this:

...earlier today online, a deal which *anyone* can do with a couple of coupon codes easily found. If you want to argue that "OH NO IT DOESN'T HAVE TEH WIRELESS#!#!@!", A) not everyone needs it, and B) I paid $20 for a wireless ethernet bridge at buy.com a few weeks ago, so it does. If you don't include that, I paid about $547 for all of this. Four great games, a rechargeable battery kit, the high-def VGA cable, and the X360 Premium which includes a hard drive, headset, etc. etc. Don't BS and try to claim the PS3 is a better value. If we want to REALLY play semantics, add on a $75 Sam's Club HD-DVD drive on the Hot Deals forum, or about $170ish if you buy it normally with any random coupon. That still comes out to either the price of the PS3 with tax (my totals include tax/shipping), or the PS3 plus a single game.

2. The quality is indeed comparable... yes, the X360 supposedly has a 2.5% failure rate from articles I have read (not likely accurate) compared to the industry-average 2%, but that's hardly an epidemic. The build quality is good, the features are there (gone over above), and the online service is far superior for just a couple bucks a month (about $45 a year, or $3.75/mo. if you buy a 12-month card from newegg, and it sometimes comes with a free 13th month for a $3.46/mo. rate). Frame rates are there on both, responsiveness, etc. all there, as are graphic quality and whatnot. It's a wash other than the online in this area.

3. Which console has the good games? Undoubtedly, the 360 at the moment, and likely for the future as well, looking as though it will maintain a solid lead. It has more exclusives, and all of the titles that are cross-platform just as the PS3 does. At the *current* time, the PS3 pales in comparison to the 360's line-up of consistently good, well-rated-by-all games. It has three. Yeah, just three. The 360 has a LOT more than that ;). What about the future? Cross-platforms are a wash, it doesn't matter. The only major holdouts are FFXIII and MGS4 (which is rumored to be going 360-side anyway). Heavenly Sword could be good, but it's from an unproven developer, so it's anyone's guess. GTA4? Spider-Man 3? Madden/NHL/etc. games? Devil May Cry 4? All cross-platform. Random downloadable games through the PSN or Marketplace? About equal, with the Marketplace having one that many consider an essential (Castlevania: Symphony of the NIght).

I would hope you can see where I'm coming from now :).

sigh, the fan boys are ruining my thread. Let me chime in as I have both the 360 and PS3.

For GAMES, right now the 360 is a better buy.
FOR TECHNOLOGY, right now the PS3 is a better buy
FOR MOVIES, right now the PS3 is a better buy

Both systems are good but I will say that right now the 360 is a better buy because of the library of good games. The PS1 and PS2 started slow might I add and took 1-2 years after launch to start getting good games. The battle between the consoles will be decided in 2-3 years as both systems will have a large fan base. So who knows, the PS3 may be the best thing since slice bread in 2 years if Sony gets the new next gen dev kits out. The 360 may go the way of Dreamcast. No one knows for sure what will happen

Lets keep this thread civilized. Now why don't both partys agree that the other system is a good system.

I call BS. Let's see these articles. From what I've read, even MS is admitting a 4-5% failure rate. If you google X360 failure rate there are tons of articles quoting retailers with anywhere from a 10-30% failure rate. Anecdotal evidence suggests these things fail far more often than typical consumer electronic goods. The build quality is anything but good.

You call bs and ask for a citation...I would say the same for your "MS admitting to a 5% failure rate" quote, and show me a source for the "retailers saying 10-30% failure" . Make shit up much?

Anecdotal evidence is an oxymoron.

.... actually read up on CallingAllCars (downloadable game) and it sounds like multiplayer is actually gonna be a lot of fun.

You're bringing up downloadable games like calling all cars? Ok...geometry wars, lumines live, worms HD, street fighter, boom boom rocket, settlers of catan, carcassone, heavy weapon, and about a dozen others.

I wanna say the 360 is the better out of the 2, and i think itll stay that way for a while. b4 anyone calls me a *!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*! ive been a sony fan for a long time. love the ps1/2. the 360 hardware problems will get sorted out. the ps3 games will start crankin out. but the key between the 2 is online...not even online gaming; the online experience. xbox live, marketplace, the friends list, the 360 guide button.....fuckin incredible. the integration will make any software dev proud. everytime i get on psn i cringe. it looks like something a kid in my fundamentals of web development class did for a final project. its slow, has a horrible ui, and looks thrown together at the last minute. home might change things tho, but who knows.

i know sony has some good 1st/2nd party games comin out, but losin gta was a big blow to them. people said the ps2 was overpriced, said it wouldnt have any good games, etc; and we all know how that turned out.

heres an old link from the playstation forum:
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=psx2&thread.id=656

here's a summation of the argument:

Sony did many things wrong with the PS2, there's no way it will be #1... it'll probably be #2 or even #3. The reason the PSX is so cool and successful is that it appeals to EVERYONE, not just a select crowd of people. PlayStation2 will be stuck in the middle between Dreamcast and Dolphin... the only thing that it won't have between DC and Dolphin is the price... PS2 will be the most expensive of the three.

PlayStation2 will cost a lot. $375 is way too much for most people to spend on a console. Now I know some 30 year old "kid" who buys all the latest electronics and games is gonna come on here and say that PS2 price is no problem for him, and that it'll go perfect with his high end home theater system and provide broadband products and services into his home.

Well that's just great... he and the other few thousand like him in the world will buy PS2 and love it, and the rest of the people on the earth will buy either Dreamcast or Dolphin, depending on how long they feel like waiting before joining the next generation.

What about the real kids... the ones without 5 or even 6 figure paychecks? What are they going to buy? Do you think they'll pay Sony's outrageous price just to get a few features that they don't even need nor care about? Hell no! They'll go to the store looking for PS2 and then get a Dreamcast because it'll be less than half the price (sega has said they will lower DC to $150 when PS2 launches). Then later on when people come to buy PS2, the Dolphin will be out... these customers will see a more powerful machine for at most the same cost as the PS2, providing Sony lowers it substantially. If not, Dolphin will actually be cheaper. Don't forget that Dolphin will have a worldwide launch in December 2000... PS2 only has a 3 month head start in the US and the rest of the world. PS2's only real lead is in Japan, considering that 3 months makes no difference, since Dolphin will be ready that Christmas anyway, when most systems are sold.

To reiterate, here's what the average gamer will do:

1. From now until holidays 2000, they'll see PS2 and get a heart attack from the high price, then they'll check out the Dreamcast which will be almost as good but at a $150 price. They'll get the Dreamcast.

2. From 2001 on, anyone who is looking to buy PS2 will probably also see Dolphin in the same store, and go with it since it's the most powerful machine. And it'll have great games like Mario and Zelda on it too, sure to be big system sellers.

PlayStation2 is overpriced, it only has a 3 month headstart on Dolphin everywehre but Japan, and it has a bunch of useless features that won't be used by mainstream consumers until the PS2's game abilities are obsolete.

overpriced hardware (600!!! omfg)? check
useless features (blu-ray, wireless, who needs that!!!)? check
not as powerful as other console (360 gpu owns sony!!!!)? check
goin against system sellers (zelda, gow, and halo ftw!!!)? check

looks like the ps3 is right on schedule to 100mil

If you believe "2.5% failure rate" on 360's I have some oceanfront property for sale...

Ring me up, please!

:p

In related news, Microsoft says the number of faulty Xbox 360s is less than 3% of total units, this being below the average for new consumer electronic products.

That's basically the only thing I can find through google (I knew I had read it a long time ago!), with other mentions from late 2006 of Microsoft re-confirming the numbers.

Stereophile, nice job with a strawman again... I notice you completely avoid the actual meat of my posting and rather, take out one insignificant line of one minor point.

EDIT: Oh, and another rebuttal to your already-whimpering argument: let's *PRETEND* that Microsoft is COMPLETELY lying, and the failure rate is SEVEN percent. That would mean, at a sales number of over 6 million units currently, that there were 420,000 defective units sent back. Considering most of the market is made of more technically-fluent people, would it not make sense for there to be a lot of posts? There always are on any product, really, but this is just to put things into perspective.

Make shit up much?

In this case anecdotal evidence is pretty strong. I mean who can deny these things break left and right. The internet is full of people complaining about their X360 going tits up.
The only scientific evidence belongs to MS who actually would have the means to track the data since they are where all the dead ones go. And if you think they're going to give you a straight answer, well I guess you are more gullible than most.

I had no intention of debating the merits of the X360 vs PS3. They both offer something. I'm just sick of idiots that don't know what they're talking about spouting garbage like there is only one good exclusive PS3 game coming. Or there are only 3 games out worth playing when these people simultaneously rattle off every single X360 game that got a score higher that 7 as if it's justification. Really if you want to knock any system for lack of games it should be the Wii. IMO it's got one good game. One. :p

You really think that's a scientifically valid poll compared to Microsoft's own numbers of over SIX MILLION results, whereas that has 193 and is on a TECHNICAL SUPPORT FORUM that likely is going to be filled more with people who have had failures by far, let alone people having interest in voting will be more of the ones who had failures to even look at the thread?

Nope.

Wii? It has at least six games that are of good caliber, and several more depending on your tastes that may not appeal to everyone. Try again, and leave the insults out of it when trying to debate. It doesn't make you look like you know much ;).

Anecdotal evidence is just that: anecdotal ;). If you wouldn't mind extending the courtesy of responding to any of my more important post arguments like I am yours, it would be nice. However, it's really more for entertainment at this point, I suppose on your end, than to actually try to put up a real debate.

What joke. I know you think you're the master rhetorician, but I and most of this forum know you're a ________. (fill in the blank)
:D

There you go again... diversion! Interception! De-ception! Anything but the argument!!! Guess which matches you ;)! Do you actually have anything real to say?

It's still valid. They break. A LOT.
haha

Again, despite that you're wrong, let's *pretend* you're correct. Do you actually have anything to say regarding the meat of my post, or are you going to keep rattling on about "OMG THEY DIE LIKE FLIES LOL !!!!"?

What is the meat of your post ?

You've got an X360 and an unrational need to justify your purchase ?

Nope.

Microsoft lies... that poll isn't exact but I guarantee it's closer to the real number than MS figures...

This isn't a technical support forum... and according to those results, the failure rate is close to 45%... It may not be 45% but it could easily be somewhere in the middle ~25%. Some estimates have had it around 30%.

And I know plenty about the 360 failing...look at my sig, I'm not a frothing f4nboy.

This very thread has a poll that must be just as valid: 50% of people think the PS3 is bad! OMG scientific poll results!!1

The PS2 failed at an alarming rate, and it managed to have a few good games and sell a few units. MS will get their shit together like sony did.

This thread turned out to be quite epic.

Anecdotal evidence is not evidence.

Keep your head in the sand. Anecdotal evidence is a form of evidence. It may not be as reliable as other methods but it still has validity.

Besides, we're not talking about just my own personal observation. Any non-biased person who frequents the internet will admit there is a disturbing # of people complaining about dead X360s.

Keep your head in the sand. Anecdotal evidence is a form of evidence. It may not be as reliable as other methods but it still has validity.

This guy I know says his playstation 3 burned his house down.

Keep your head in the sand if you don't believe it, but the PS3 is a grave fire hazard.

You're being disingenuous. How many threads or message forum posts have you honestly seen of people complaining about a PS3 dying ? Maybe one here or there ?
There has been a virtual avalanche of "my X360 died" threads ever since it launched.

What is the meat of your post ?

You've got an X360 and an unrational need to justify your purchase ?

If you actually read the post, you'd know I don't have a 360 ;). Yet. Heck, while you're at it, how about you check the last post on the first page of this very thread? You might find something interesting written by me about a week ago!

You're being disingenuous. How many threads or message forum posts have you honestly seen of people complaining about a PS3 dying ?

Less popular product = fewer owners = fewer people to complain.

Ok I looked. You're smarter than I give you credit for. ;)

However I don't buy the argument that volume accounts for the discrepancy in reported failure rates.

Go ahead and have the last word. I'm off to play some wonderful games on my PS3. There are so many, I often have trouble deciding what to play. :D

Lots. The PS3 burned down a dozen houses in the hills of california, and started the georgia wildfires.

I never said "close to real numbers" I said "closer" Huge difference. Watch who you're calling an idiot... You're the one who believes a 2.5% failure rate. BAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Yes, 50% of people do think the PS3 is bad. This isn't that off from what I would expect in a larger sample group. This poll is asking an opinion whereas that was asking for facts. Neither are scientific but I never said mine was.

The ps3 has the build quality to back up the claims of a much less failure rate. Look at the motherboard pics / cooling solution, this is also translated into the cost of the PS3 however.

Less popular product = fewer owners = fewer people to complain.

BS. The 360 had failure rates on a large scale from right out the gate. The PS3 now has a few million out there, which is more than enough to notice a trend in hardware failure rate. I think its pretty safe to say, even from an objective standpoint(which is impossible from this thread), to say the PS3's build quality is pretty superior and isnt having a high rate of problems.

Its still to early to tell... but Home could be a lot cooler than we all think. Just because its 3D doesn't mean you can't do what XBL is doing. I'm sure one will be able to walk through all the virtual space, or bring up a hud to do the same things you can do in XBL... but its... free. PS3 is constantly adding new content.... I don't know about any other PS3 owners but I feel like as time goes on here, more and more stuff is being released faster.

At .. no .. charge .. to .. me.

I don't have to hassle with XBL refill cards or paying a monthly subscription. People can complain about the current PSN set-up.. but most of this is just temp. After Home is released and a few more fireware updates, my PS3 is gonna have a lot of features, that I can consider added content to my origonal purchase price.

As for those that are hopping onto the baggon late... when Home is released + additional features, will be getting a lot more bang for the buck, straight out of the box. Not to include w/e games that are out.

Sure, you might not be into the whole "sims" type enviroment, but if home does what XBL does + more.. .how is that a bad thing?
