All this "there are no games" remind me of when the 360 first dropped. I expect games to come this fall and to continue afterwards. Calm down.

After playing WoW two years, and spending hours after hours running in circle in Ironforge reading crap, chatting crap with others, looking up auction while waiting for my friends to get ready for an instance run.. I can safely say that "Home" will be the most successful glorified chat room ever hehe.

I disagree with this. I think that its a different sort of crowd that play most console games. "Home" is a cute feature that will be underutilized. Most people are going to be looking for someone else to play against. I think that most people will spend maybe an hour or 2 when it first comes out, or first purchase the console, checking out other people's homes and talking with others. After that, its going to get old very quick. The Second Life kinda crowd is not the same group that buys a PS3, or even plays WoW.

To truely be successful, it must allow players to quickly and easily connect with each other to play the multiplayer games that they own. If it doesn't do this, its not going to be successful at all, it will just be a cute, but somewhat useless, feature.

Don't get me wrong, its cool that they are including it for free, but I think that the most important feature that is needed is to enhance the multiplayer experience of the games by providing a simple interface to connect players together.

How cool would it be if you could do things in Home and still fold@home while doing it :D

I remember "no new arcade games" complaints when the 360 first came out. But it's always managed to have a series of high-profile releases - GRAW and Oblivion come to mind immediately.

No... I distinctly remember my friends with 360's complaining about the lack of games...

ps3 isn't that great. I tried it already at friends houses. Its the same graphics practically as the xbox360. But just a tinge little tiny lower. Its not worth it right now but probably later on in the future it would have a few cool games. To me the wii and the xbox360 are the best ones right now. Wii is really fun with friends thats for sure lol.

Or if they updated the thing so that instead of seeing protein simulations, you see your avatar pulling clothes out of the dryer *endlessly* and folding them while Folding runs? Now *THAT* would excite me :)

I remember that as well, and with good reason: 360's launch lineup was "meh", especially that piece of trash Perfect Dark Zero. GAWD what a waste of cash that was.

Lots of good posts in here. I myself picked up a ps3, I have an sff pc hooked up to my tv (projector) but find dvd quality to be lacking when compared to high def tv, so coupled with the fact that GTHD looked great and it could play blu-rays, I decided to grab it. Then, since none of the games that are currently out for it (except maybe fight night) looked good enough for me to buy, and blu-ray content isn't quite fleshed out, I decided to play around with linux on it. I figured if I'm going to get it later anyway when gt5 comes out, I might as well get it now and see what it can do. It makes a pretty good htpc, it took some playing around but I can now play dvd quality video over the network (using gigabit lan) instead of having to copy them to the ps3 from my computer or burn them to dvd. Not a big deal as I have my computer hooked to the tv as well, but going forward I plan to move all of my music/video to a central computer and just have it serve to the other computers in the house, and the ps3 will make a good all-in-one device, especially when cell accelerated hd video encoders are available.

The benefits over a 360 aren't that many, but it was enough for me to go for it. If i had a 360, I honestly don't think I'd get a ps3 as well unless there was blu-ray exclusive content for it, I wanted a pc on my tv (and didn't already have one), or there was a ps3 exclusive game for it that I really wanted. It's other advantages outside of those aren't worth another $600, at least to me. The 360 itself has enough advantages to where I seriously considered it over the ps3 (downloadable hd content was almost enough), but in the end the ps3 will have all of the desireable (to me) features of the 360 plus a few the 360 doesn't have. The ps3 has insane connectivity, and looking at how long it took the 360 to get a lot of it's features, I don't think the ps3 is behind that pace and is actually probably ahead of it. The 360 at 6 months wasn't very well fleshed out, but then again, sony really has to push harder.

I'd like to list a handful of things that impress me about the PS3 right now over the 360.

- Rechargable controller in the box, with USB cable. (360 makes you spend $20 on a kit.)
- Unit and drive run almost silent. (360 is EXTREMELY noisy compared to it.)
- Free online play. (360's XBL is $50 for 12 months?)
- Built-in wireless network card. (360 WiFi adaptor = $100.)
- Bluetooth connectivity. (360 = N/A.)

Those are the obvious positives over the 360 ... we could also count the built-in Blu-Ray player, but the price difference between the two systems pretty mucn negates that arguement. Another thing I will say is that the PS3 feels more "solid" than the 360 ... just for example, if you hold your 360 in your hand and rotate your wrist, you will hear moving parts inside the 360. It just always makes me feel like the 360 is fragile ... pretty ironic considering how many get RMA'd eh?

The PS3 might not have as many games out, but that's going to change over the next 6 months. Another thing I might add is that if you have any desire at all to play FF13, just go ahead and get your PS3 right now. :)

Oh yeah, I almost forgot ... at least MS packages HD cables with the 360 premium/elite ... there's no excuse for Sony not to at LEAST put a Component cable in the box with the PS3, but IMO there should be an S-Video+Composite, Component, AND HDMI cables all in the box. This would have cost them what, an extra $20 at most?

Xbox 360: With rainbow 6 vegas, it sucked ass. it froze within the first 5 minutes of the game. My opinion of microsoft: they should have released the "elite" version when they launched the system. they had the technology. Its purely a REACTIVE strategical move to Sony's PS3. (as opposed to being proactive by making one of the best systems to begin with). Now a bunch of people are left with, not really outdated, but outdated 360 consoles that are less than a year old.

PS3: Ive enjoyed playing one of my friends so much that i sold my 360 and bought a ps3. so far, ive been a little unimpressed with the games. graphically, they are really nice, but nothing really new yet. its all the same old genres of games we've seen in the past. as time goes, i think the games engineered for ps3 only will be far better than the ones for the 360. ps3 is coming out with some really cool downloadable content and games that will be available soon. i look forward to what the ps3 has to offer for the future. and the card readers on the ps3 are a +.....

Also consider: war between HD-DVD and Blue Ray MOVIES. one system will probably end up with a useless technology....

Hopefully, this is of some help.

well I got the PS3 today and so far I am very happy and it didn't disappoint me. I got motorstorm which is a blast and looks very good. Also, the blue ray player is great. On a side note: I also have the Toshiba HD-DVD player and it takes around 40-60 seconds for a movie to play due to HDCP checking. The PS3 though fires right away and I don't have to wait. Maybe takes ~ 5 secs to load. So I am happy with the purchase. I would say though that if I didn't have a Xbox 360 or a PS3, I would choose the Xbox 360 for games right now. Give the PS3 1 more year to hit its 2nd gen titles and it will be a great system for games. Overall though, this is a good system with a bright future. Though I must admit that Sony has done a horrible job with its system design layout but I hear that the next gen system dev toolkits will fix a lot of developer headaches. Hopefully this will be true.

gald to hear your happy.

Aside from some supply issues that were quickly resolved, PS2 did NOT have a rocky start, that's a pile of crap. neither did PS1, it quickly surpassed Saturn and N64 in the market.

Just wanted to comment on this, but what you are saying about the PS1 is not true.

The Saturn was outselling it in Japan until the release of FFVII, and its sales were modest at best in N. America and Europe until about mid '97. It also lagged behind both the Saturn and the N64 in software sales for a good while despite having a larger user base. It did end up dominating then other two, but things weren't always that way.

Anyway, glad to see you're happy with your PS3, Arkanian. I've been planning to get one since March, but I keep putting off the purchase due to the fact that the games I want keep getting delayed(Warhawk and Heavenly Sword).

If want you want to buy it for is games, please wait until 2nd gen titles if you want the system for particular games. I am probably going to use mine more for playing blueray movies so I bought mine now.

I realize FFVII was where PS1 really took off, but it was still beating the piss out of Saturn (maybe not in Japan, obviously wasn't paying attention to that market at that time) in the US, where Saturn was pretty much dead on arrival. Hell, they didn't even *announce* it was coming out! Plus it was $400 at the start. As for N64, I'm not aware that it *ever* outsold Playstation. I distinctly recall PS1's release, getting one right away, and most of my friends jumping in rapidly what with the U R not e campaign getting everyone all abuzz (and that god-awful battle arena toshinden game, LOL).

Maybe PS1 didn't have the world's fastest launch, but it didn't have a rocky start by any stretch of the term.

The N64 actually did outsell the PlayStation during its first few months, but the lack of third-party titles and not enough support from Japanese developers eventually caught up to it.

People also complained of the PS1's retail price very much in the same way that people didn't like the 360 price in the beginning. I'd say it had atleast somewhat of a rocky start, and certainly not a great start.

For $600, I expect more. For $523 I bought a premium 360, Gears of War, and a VGA HD cable. Add $20 for a charge kit and yeah, it's better and cheaper than the PS3. There are very few games out and coming out for the PS3 that the cheaper 360 doesn't already have. Face it, Sony is a shitty company and is fucking over all of its old fans including me. I loved my Playstation and I loved my Playstation 2, but the PS3 is a failure. Sony having to axe the 20gb model is just a bigger sign that Sony doesn't care. That and their company is falling apart.

People think Folding on their PS3 is great when all it is is an e-penis enlargement tool.

I decided the PS3 was a "no-go" for me, due to the price and the company that makes it. Instead, I did this:

you're right. folding on my PS3 makes me artificially feel like a bigger man.
If you want to Fold, the PS3 is worth it because of its importance to the scientific community. As for being what it was designed to be(gaming machine), it fails to do that and should not be purchased for that.

oh really? i haven't noticed.
aside from Gears of War online, my 360 is collecting dust since acquiring a PS3

I dunno, three good games on the entire system (Virtua Fighter 5, Motorstorm, and Resistance) seems pretty slim on content to me, especially for the hefty price premium. Only one of those are playable online even.

The amount of rolling eyes in this thread is hideous.

Good 360 games:
GOW
RB6V
Crackdown
PGR3
GRAW
GRAW 2
Oblivion
Guitar Hero 2
PDZ
DOA4
COD2
COD3
Dead Rising

There are many more. The only PS3-exclusive game I know of that is going to be anything great is MGS4. All else will be on the 360 too.

goldentiger, apparently you haven't played at least 2 out of the 3 games you've listed (if any).

lol at PDZ

Okay? Ummm... riiiightttt... so yeah, you have any other good games you've played on the PS3 that critics and user reviews agree are any good other than those three to support your argument? I can find a LOT of them for the 360 ;). The PS3 is NOT a good gaming console at this point, though it's an excellent BluRay player and folding@home boxen.

i don't compare consoles, bro. rather pointless when i own both.

you said one out of "Virtua Fighter 5, Motorstorm, and Resistance" are playable online, and i contested that.
care to rephrase since you possess none of them?

First off, you are awfully omniscient apparrently (wait, no you're not! ROFL).

Secondly:

Talk about self-ownage by you! Reading Comprehension 101 for mr. michaelo, please!

No two of the 3 are playable online. Hence you don't know wtf you're talking about.

Resistance is? All the reviews lament VF5 not being playable online, that's for sure!

Either way, the point still stands: the value's just not there. I guess michaelo bought his PS3 without looking online at all and is bitter he wasted so much more money for very little compared to a far cheaper 360 with several games included in the lower price ;).

I would strike PDZ, DOA4, COD2 and COD3 off that list of so-called "good games".
Oh but suddenly they have to be exclusive, so go ahead and take Oblivion, GRAW and RB7 Vegas off that list too. If MGS4 is the *only* upcoming PS3 exclusive game you're aware of, I don't know what to say.
Maybe this can describe my feeling towards you

Straw man, straw man... if he can't do it nobody can! Hanging high, hanging low, scaring off crows, it's the way he goes! STRAWWW MANNNNNN!!!

i bought my PS3 for several reasons, one of the lesser ones being because forum trolls like you claim it is a failure. motorstorm/RoM/blu-ray and games to come being some of the major ones.
i already owned a 360, like i said.

not surprised you were found completely incorrect and just brush it aside with more PS3 hate. don't you find this foolish?
