Hrm, elder scolls, where you can become the head of mages, assassins, thieves... all at once. Where you have fetch missions, because 50 nirnroot... well, you were going to search all the river banks anyway.
witcher 3 changed a lot of that. the side quests tend to be meaningful. They put a lot of work into them, some as much as the main quests. Some of the quests are just epic in multiple ways, example, the bloody baron. You are not doing missions just "because".
the world is also alive, moreso than any other game. Your horse will go to feed. You will see moving cloud shadows on the ground. People will scatter when it rains. The map.... you have 4 zones, two of them are each probably bigger than another other game world.
There are a lot of flaws but overall the game is really epic.
