The official Red Orchestra 2 thread

A lot of things you mention Flogger are selectable in the server, using relaxed realism (which many beta servers are).

Flogger, since you said you are "about" to order it, have you played it?

No, but I have seen plenty of videos which is all I need to determine stuff like movement. ;)

I've been following the games development for 2 or more years. Reading the forums confirms my issues. If you like the game play changes then good for you. To me, I don't like them. It kills the immersion and seems to have become a game about getting high scores and being "accessible". RO1 itself was rather easy and accessible. The perfect mix of realism and quick gameplay. The controls where not sluggish at all, not even close to ArmA 2 OA.

IMO they should have focused more on what made RO1 great and improved upon it and kept high realism. Firefight (team deathmatch) and similar features are best suited for games optimized for such gameplay, like CoD or BF.

I'll still get the game though. $27, moddable, and the devs respond to forum posts. More innovative features than games like BF. It might not be a good equal to RO1 IMO, but it is the next best thing.

Hopefully a realism mod will come out!

A lot of things you mention Flogger are selectable in the server, using relaxed realism (which many beta servers are).

I would hope so. :) My only issue is that about 20% or less of the total servers are suitable to my play style. I don't care for the two new game modes, Lockdown (within Territory), or relaxed realism. Finding a Realism-Territory only server with a good ping will become problematic after the first few months I would imagine.

Uninstalled the beta today. This game isn't for me. I just don't have fun playing it. Oh well.

Why not? what games do you consider fun?

I don't remember the last time I had this much fun in a game. I am addicted.

AMD, I am also addicted, only thing i have been disappointed in so far is the tank combat. And i would say my K/D ratio is about even right now

I explained most of what I can put in words previously. I just don't go away from the game going man that was fun. I have always enjoyed the WW2 shooters especially playing rifles only. I tend to mostly play FPS though even that has decreased since COD4. I just don't get into modern or futuristic FPS games. They just tend to turn into machine gun fests.

Since I own the game and can't get a refund, I figure I may try come launch again, but I am not optimistic.

I just flat out suck and can admit it upfront.

I definitely suck in RO2. I run about 1 kill per even 10 deaths sometimes worse. Usually I get shot down and don't even see where the shot came from.

You probably uninstalled it too soon.

I have been playing RO since the mod days. I always preferred the infantry only maps or combined arms maps, and Fallen heroes was probably one of (imo) the least fun maps. Apartments is the only decent map in the beta, but it's more suited to CQB guns then rifles.

However tonight, they are releasing three new maps to the beta to try, which may help you enjoy it more.

The silo map looks like a great rifle centric map to play, nice good open spaces, etc.

how does it compare to mw2/bc2?

This is more realistic. It requires teamwork and strategy along with patience. There are no cross hairs only iron sights.

Most of the kiddies that are into MW2 will not like this game at all.

I personally think the graphics are amazing.

I have not even played the tank map, just not interested.

If you like Apartments and Fallen Heroes play while you can, they are taking them out to concentrate on the new maps.

RO2 Beta Update Changelog - September 2

http://forums.tripwireinteractive.com/showthread.php?t=59563

We're going to be rolling an update to the beta out shortly. Here is the changelog for your perusal:

- Turned on Speedhack detection and added a system to allow server admins to decide what to do with a player when they are detected using a speedhack (kick, session ban, or permanent ban).
- Fixed PreStartDuration not working properly which caused the round to start prematurely after a map change.
- Fixed getting stuck with a zoomed FOV when using grenades
- Added ability to turn off anti-aliasing
- Fixed floating meshes when a player dies
- Fixed destructibles not updating their shadows when destroyed
- Fixed DOF inside tanks
- The ranked server system is now operational
- Player progression stats are now saving and loading
- Unranked servers are now showing up as unranked in the browser
- Realism modes are hooked up and functional
- Killing a tank now gives extra points based on the number of players in the tank
- New map list: Gumrak, Grain Elevator, Barracks, Red October Factory
- Team balance changes. Commanders and top scoring players no longer get team swapped on death. The role select menu will not appear immediately to make it more obvious that you have died. Also, fixed a bug where an axis soldier could spawn on the allied team or vice versa.
- Fixed some HUD icons sticking around on the screen
- Fixed Countdown ending with time still on the clock
- Fixed automatically firing your weapon sometimes when respawning
- Fixed some issues with scoring in Firefight and prevented running out of reinforcements in this game type
- F10 will now cancel a pending server connection properly when stuck on a loading screen

Oops, missed one thing:

- Fixed the Welcome Screen editor in webadmin making the welcome screen text invisible in game

The learning curve is indeed steep. Almost regretted buying it at first, but then stuck with it and I am enjoying it a bunch more now. Also pretty happy about the new update. Was just about to come here and bitch about speedhackers and about autoswitches (since the role selection would immediately pop up, I was one of the ones who didn't know I had died).

Also, about snipers: am I the only one who finds the elite marksman/rifleman a much better option than the sniper? Distances aren't so great, and you have more mobility plus faster rate of fire.

It's the maps atm.

Trust me, when you get sniper on a map you know well, with good sniping spots and long range/open area's, you'll love them.

Apart from that I find the elite riflemen the best class, I love the G41 and SVT.

The MG-34 is abeast on apartments too, love using that gun on there.

Here is a great review of the game. He hit on the steep learning curve and the skill required. But if you take the time to learn and gain the skills it is very rewarding.

Dang, he mentions having class restrictions in the game. Other than sniper being restricted to 1 per; anyone know the breakdown for the other classes? I always prefer to play sniper or machine gunner in WWII games which makes me :(.

Some modes don't have class restrictions and I believe servers have the option to remove that. I know by default Firefight, the TDM mode, has no class restrictions.

In both Countdown and Territory there are limits in place. This depends on the amount of players I think, but generally there's one sniper, a couple elite rifleman (who get semi-auto rifles), I think like five or six assault guys (who have SMG's) and then a machinegunner or two. After that there's tons of rifleman slots, who get the bolt action, which I'm pretty sure you can put a scope on later on once you unlock it in the full game.

Also, there is the Commander and a few Squad Leaders. The Squad Leaders get to choose between an SMG and a semi-auto rifle and I think the Commander may have a similar choice. They both get smoke grenades to help cover their team though, and binoculars as well I believe.

If anyone is on the fence about this game, I highly recommend taking the plunge. It's quickly become my favorite multiplayer FPS, bar none. The shooting mechanics are just ridiculously satisfying and I love the focus on realism as it's a focus that doesn't come at the expense of fun which I've found in other games of this nature.

Thank god for class restrictions i say! Nothing worse than a team based game where you have to occupy territory or certain points and you have 6 snipers in your team that think they`re the greatest and lie somewhere in the back with their scopes and only 2 other guys who try to get the stuff done.

Yeah I had a team full of people like that the other day on Countdown. Even when it got down to one guy on our side left defending, he still was laying prone on the ground "sniping". I put the term in quotation marks because he'd got two whole kills over the course of the entire match and he was aiming at nothing while the entire enemy team took the objective.

I wanna upgrade for this game SOOOO bad, i'm saving up for i5 2500k - 64gb ssd - gtx570 8gb ram etc, total cost would be about 850 euros but i can easilly resell the card for 2/3 of the price and stay with my mobos onboard until keppler comes out.

My current system is Q6700 @ 3.3 and a stock clocked 5850 - stupid punkbuster freezes my whole system when a gpu tool is running in the background. A sandy @ 4.5 ghz plus a SSD for 1-2 steam games and OS would be a very noticeable upgrade, i'm both cpu and gpu limited in arma 2 and rohos beta, HEAVILY cpu limited in bc2 and most probably in bf3 too.

My framerate on fallenheroes - 64players is TERRIBLE, around 20fps when i'm out in the open, that's with medium settings( except characters and textures set to high), radial blur - depth of field - motion blur - ambient occlusion- bloom - sun shafts are set to false in My Documents/ROengine.ini and MLAA ( i hate jaggies - FXAA seems to be useless in this game ) not satisfied with the framerate, tried low-medium settings FXAA false MLAA false and i got a healthy boost (that means i was not only cpu limited but gpu limited as well ) but the whole game looked worse than cod1 ( honestly ! )

My buddy with his stock clocked gtx580 and his sandybridge DESTROYS the game(minimum 70-90fps regardless of map and player count ultra settings frame limiter off stupid effects like bloom disabled ) he's a competitive cod player ( here's his fragmovie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXBkX6AoU8U ) and really enjoys playing the beta, glad i convinced him to buy the game :)

Gameplay wise it plays very similar to RO1, albeit a bit more faster paced and with less pixel hunting when shooting ppl at range, commander mode and squal leaders are very welcome additions, but i'd like more teamwork to be enforced in the gameplay, like in BF, maybe that will change in the realism mode, who knows.

I was never a great RO player but i advise every1 who's frustated when playing online to play with headphones, preferably good ones not overpriced gaming headset crap, turn bloom off and maybe foilage detail, you need clean and sharp looking graphics if you want to be competitive, not a brown fuzzy mess at 30fps. Only post process effect that i really like is depth of field, it doesn't hinder visibility much and looks VERY good, i got it disabled for performance reasons, but DoF off also lowers the game's brightness, weird :S mindset is very important too, if you run around like a headless chicken you will get owned 99% of the time, most of you should have learned that from BC2 already.

@ nvidia users : does the MLAA option work ? can't tell from my buddy's screenshots, it looks like he's playing with AA off :S what about hardware physics, do you notice any difference with that setting ???

There is usually a slot open or two for MG in 64man servers, it's not that popular of a class, very heavy recoil and reduced mobility :)

I'm going to give myself the weekend with this beta and if I can't make myself advance past the "completely hopeless" phase then I will regretfully be cancelling my preorder because I just can't see me buying something that I can't even play worth a damn.

And that's not a knock against the game. It's a knock against myself.

I was never that good at RO1 and it's been forever since I played it so I'm essentially a complete noob to this.

What are some good "noob 101" tips? What are the best ways I can kind of ease myself into this thing?

This is absolutely true. You run face to face with someone, you sneak up on someone, someone will be dead. No strafing and bunny hopping, no dolphin dives, no hitting the guy 4 or 5 times, only to have him hide and regen.

I'm finding I have a better time if I stand back from windows and whatnot rather than using cover. The lack of a hold-to-aim feature means that I often get stuck with ym head poking out of cover because I forget to click a second time to duck back in. It also seems to make you a smaller target. In fact, I generally try and avoid using the first person cover system entirely, I always get glued to a wall when I don't want to be.

I find it useful to aim and scroll up to set the rifles to 200m at the start as well, so you don't have to worry about doing it in combat. Still works well up close and makes you more accurate at range.

Going prone is also a good way to get yourself killed because it seems a bit buggy at the moment, and the view has a shitfit if you try and look around whilst prone.

Yes! I'm getting picked by snipers with ease because of this.

I think the same things are happening to me.

Noted.

I've been busy and haven't been able to play that much of the beta so far, but I'm enjoying the game. I never played the first red orchestra so the game is difficult for me and requires a much different strategy then what I'm used too. For the little bit I've played, I either died a lot or end up being too careful and never get any kills or even see the enemy lol. I finally had a good game though and ended up getting 6 kills, not a lot, but it was very satisfying being a rifleman prone and picking people off from a distance.

I'm starting to enjoy the beta more and more now that more servers are running Territory only/full realism. My only gripe is some of the servers have their auto-balance way too aggressive. I got switched every five minutes or so back and forth all game.

I broke down a bought the game :D. Pretty fun even though I'm getting my ass handed to me. Do the role progressions mean anything? Before I took a break, I saw something about a scoped Kar98 when the map ended.

I meant to ask, but are filters broken in beta? I tried to filter friendly fire servers the other night, but still every server listed had it turned on.

I was trying to find servers not running it since either I would get shot in the back at spawns or shoot my own teammates since I couldn't tell the difference.

This was because the default config TWI had was over-aggressive, tell the admins to adjust it. I think the new server configs they put out do have it fixed, but the old configs are not automatically updated.

I am sad that more people here are not discussing this game or active in this thread. Such a great game.

The game isn't even out yet, most people probably did not buy the deluxe version so aren't even playing at the moment.

I had a need for a big team based game, and the people I usually play with are picking this up so I just bought the deluxe version (wanted the killing floor things, and the beta :D)

Will definately be looking to mod this in some way... (probably non ww2... would be great as some kind of necromunda style kind of thing...:D)

Anyone heard any word on when the new patch with the new maps is coming? It was supposed to be last night, then it was this morning and yet still nothing.

I didn't buy the Digital Deluxe edition, not worth it to play the game two weeks early IMO. But I'll definitely be playing on launch after work
