The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

I am guessing this is still limited to those who pre-purchased?

I patched just in case but I am guessing I won't be able to get in.

After reading this thread (and many other sites) I decided to give GW2 a shot and pre-purchased.

I was pretty into WoW at the beginning, and even enjoyed WAR for awhile, but I'm a pretty casual gamer anymore, and it seems like there's still potential to have a good time, with some fairly deep game mechanics to get into should I choose.

Hopefully I can check out the stress test tomorrow and get some initial impressions.

does the stress test use the client i get from the my account page

i didnt pre purchase yet but somebody gave me a code to make an account and dl the client....wondering if i can still participate

Yes it uses that client. The official release will use that client as well, so you don't need to delete it.

GW2 is very good for both casual and hardcore gamers.

ArenaNet may be bringing up the servers 3 hours earlier than the official launch of 12am midnight Sat, FYI.

let the refresh spam commence from 9am PST onwards on aug 24th..

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-final-countdown-guild-wars-2-launch-times/

Can't wait to spam the LOG IN button for up to three hours so I can get a character name...

I didn't realize character names had to be unique across ALL servers until yesterday. I have three names I need to try to lock down :(

I really don't understand the pacific time midnight launches of games, it completely screws over their east coast customers. i don't know everything, but i assumed it was some legal reason and they had to wait till midnight where the company is based for taxes or whatever bullshit i don't care.
now they say they might launch earlier to avoid hiccups, well that's cool and all but companies need to stop launching games at 3am eastern if there's no reason for it.
sorry i'm still pissed from diablo 3 launch.

really looking forward to the game though, i call dibs on all the names i want!

To be fair, if the servers barely stay up for a 3am launch what do you think would happen with one in the middle of the day? :D

Update your client guys... another 12K files being updated as I type.

They don't want to launch during prime time when the highest number of players may be around to hit the server. If they launch as 9PM EST / 6PM PST, they run the risk of having the login server get accidentally DDOSed from people trying to connect. Then once that stuff starts going down, it normally just gets worse for many house as the failed login just encourage people to keep spamming the crap out of it.

This makes me happy. They can say it is preparing for the final hour, but they are just making it accessible for east coasters - and I LOVE THIS.

This never happens in MMO launches. Finally, I don't need to wait until 3 am to start to log in and hope I get in by 6 am....instead it may be start at 12 and get in by 3! :-p

ANet is the only company (that I see nowadays) that has done this. I am not sure if they even did this for GW1. Honestly, this just makes me happy. Why complain about this in the thread when you are upset at the industry in general for it? Lol. Be happy that this is working out for us this one time.

i think skyrim came out at 9pm pacific? idk. i like when they open it at midnight for east coasters.. gives us west coasters way more time to play.. games always come out on tuesdays which make wednesdays the hardest day or work for a big release ;/

What are the naming rules?

(Is it like Eve where you can have a space, creating a full name?, or like WoW (which is teh gays)

Crappy single player rpg's aren't relevant to the discussion.

Curious question for those of you who played GW1, how anal is ANet about their naming policy? I have been forced to rename a number of characters across a number of games due to naming policies. LoL has been the friendliest, allowing me to keep El Jewbacabra, but I remember WoW getting upset about things like Cialis or Viagra in the guild Natural Male Enhancement...

I played with a few obscene names, as did a lot of other people, in the betas without issue. Not sure how release will be though. I hope to use the same names.

im sure they arent moderating until somebody reports you and im sure somebody will

So a lot of people have their GW1 names reserved, but you had to have 2 words in your name.

With GW2, you can have single word names and names as short as 3 letters.

Does anyone know if the names in use with the beta will be reserved or will they be up for grabs once it starts?

I'm also wondering about extra character slots - whether they will be available immediately or not.

I hate people like that. Honestly if you can't handle a little bit of language or a name with multiple meanings you likely shouldn't be allowed to witness the violence contained in a video game such as this.

Yes, how dare people have different ethics than you.

I'm just saying, it's an online experience in what is clearly not a kid's game. A bit of colorful language and wordplay certainly should be expected. I mean I can understand moderating Hello Kitty Island Adventure...

edit: ESRB Teen:
This is a massively multiplayer online (MMO) role-playing game in which players perform quests while exploring the fantastical world of Tyria. Players interact with numerous creatures and characters, perform various tasks, and engage in melee-style combat. Players use swords, firearms, explosives, and magic attacks to battle soldiers and enemy creatures (e.g., minotaurs, giant insects, golems). Skirmishes depict enemies getting shot by arrows, slashed by swords, lit on fire, or struck down by lightning bolts; some underwater attacks result in blood-cloud effects, and stylized blood effects are sometimes depicted in cutscenes. Some sequence depict alcohol use: players can earn achievements by consuming alcoholic drinks—the screen appears blurry to denote drunkenness; in a “drinking competition” mini-game, characters drink ale from mugs—the sequence ends when a challenger's health reaches zero. The words “a*s” and “bastard” can be heard in the dialogue

A bit of colorful language ought to be expected.

I hate it when people are smart asses with their toon names. It breaks game immersion. Don't give me shit about going to an RPG server, either. It's just not necessary.

GW2 doesnt even have official RP servers, so that argument should be pretty much useless in this game.
