The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

The new patch is the best patch since GW2 originally launched. It appears that Arenanet actually listened to the players this time. They fixed many things that HoT broke/ruined. There is still a lot of things that need to be worked on but this patch is a huge step in the right direction. I hope it becomes a trend.

Started playing this again over the holiday. The game has improved quality of life in the last six to eight months. Got my weaponsmithing up to 400 finally, ready to push for Ascended weapons. Got into a guild that is really active, but I won't do Fractals and Dungeons until I get my mic and headphones set back up. The new areas are gorgeous, and eat my computer alive. I really need more juice to enjoy this at 1440p.

Really liked the art style of the game....it had some really nice stuff going on but the problem I think it was one of the first AAA free to play games so people decided not to play it cause they could log in whenever.

And just for perspective, my "tall" human comes to the top of The Shatter's foot in the image above.

I play a guardian/dragon hunter on black gate
What's your login? I wouldn't mind bullshit ting with people

I still tinker around once in a while with my two main characters. Sadly not enough still play from my groups to go too far into Fractals or other areas. Been holding off on Heart of the Thorns for a while but the sales are tempting.

I have a release-era account that I've hardly played much at all - I like a lot of what I see (for instance, GW2 had and still has last I checked a fantastic quality-of-life system for crafting, inventory, and account-wide stuff. It inspired WoW to make the "reagent bank" after much prodding), but I was just spending time on something else or had limited play time. I really should head back.. couple of questions...

1. Are the "episodes" for the "World" main story still free for a certain period of time, if you were there to log-in when they unlocked, but if you missed them you had to buy access to each chapter? I remember something like that and I got a good bit of Season 2 by logging in, but I think there's probably a ton of new stuff.

2. Is all the "old" content still viable and enjoyable? I hear that GW2 does a good job making it useful for new characters, those skilling up and that there are ways to unlock old Legendary appearance.

3. One thing that irked me at the time was the way that you didn't color an item/piece of armor, but instead colored the "slot" so every new item you found basically had the same damn coloration when you equipped it. Furthermore, there doesn't seem to be a "I want the default appearance of the armor without dyes or tints" coloration? I seem to remembr some sort of "dye remover" color way back when, but it seemed to make things a brownish tint instead. Any changes to this system?

4. I hear complaints that there is relatively little new PVE content, especially Dungeon/Raid etc..? Likewise, has the monetization gotten out of control with overly expensive stuff in the Item Shop, tons of "for pay only" cosmetics and whatnot?

I picked up the Heart of Thorns upgrade just for the hell of it (deluxe) but I haven't really played, and heard there are LOTS of changes in even the basic leveling experience from the start, so I should give it a try. Any ideas and tips?

Overall GW2 is one of the better theme park MMOs I've seen, and along with World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, and The Secret World, tops my list of worthwhile MMO experiences in that subgenre, but my impressions are long out of date so going back may change things ... and hopefully for the better?

anyone want to buy my account? I have a lvl cap guardian and reveanant thing. I also have twilight... LMK lol.

I play once in a while, get into it for a bit between other games. With just myself and one friend playing its kinda meh. I need to finish the pre story to the Maguma expansion still lol.

Thanks. I have been playing lately and curious to see what they announce. I never picked up HOT though.

I really liked parts of this game it was a very good attempt in being original yet fun.
I think the Huge space of the game overwhelmed people which hasn't been seen in MMOs before.
Way too many NPCs in areas and confusing layout of zones it was just a good looking but I think they should of made it more simple.
Yeah I did the cow races and everything went in a dungeon once but that was about it.

The grind was there but compared to past MMOS it was pretty easy to level.

I'm interested. Glad to be going back to the Desert and potentially the Ring of Fire. Still log into GW1 every now and then to enjoy those parts.
I never found GW2 to be very grindy or hard. Really easy overall.

Played 95% of it solo but had a lot of fun playing with a friend to get him leveled up and see the sights. I may jump back in for this expansion. Not sure about the mounts yet though, seems too much like WoW and that is not a good thing.

never came back for HoT, but maybe I will eventually. i really did enjoy GW2, it just got kind of stale for me after maxing a few characters. i really just enjoyed the leveling and exploring. i hated the games pvp system and end game was just bland to me. i felt like, and still feel like, it has hidden potential.

Wow, I'm rather liking the new expansion's aims. I haven't put in any real Heart of Thorns time thanks to having limited MMO playtime (mostly taken up by WoW in the past year or two, with excursions to FFXIV). Its neat to see this upcoming expansion taking place in what used to be the third expansion area of the original Guild Wars if I recall. Though I admit, I am interested to know when GW2 will go to the Asian-inspired area of the world from the original GW seeing this!

For those who have been playing with any frequency, could anyone weigh in on the experience for players in regard to seeing old/original area content? For instance, can I still go back and unlock the original Legendary/Ascended weapon appearances - or are they no longer available? There's a lot of content I missed and especially as a roleplayer/collector I'd like to experience it all if I invest time, to feeling like I missed out on a lot of content, neat cosmetics etc... would be disappointing. Which brings me to my second note - long ago I asked about RP - is it still present in GW2 in your experience and does it seem to be thriving?

Thanks!

IIRC, with the exception of living season 1, you can unlock all living season content for gems. However if you logged in during the time when the living season was available, you would have gotten an email, then you don't have to pay.

Everything else is open, except for any Holliday or special event, will be open to you.

RP is still active. I'm mainly a RP character. That's why GW2 keeps me coming back. However in between content everyone goes to one of the meta worlds and just farms metas. That's why i usually fade in and out the game.

I'm still holding onto the pipe dream that we'll be able to use Alts as mercenaries as we could in GW1, but they've already said they won't add that in.

What's a good solo class for this game? My first character was a mesmer which apparently is more of a utility class for grouping. It's probably not the best match for me at the moment as I normally play solo and tend to group more towards the end game.

Yeah ranger is good solo pve. It's what I do mostly.
I pre-ordered the original game way back when and leveled my ranger to 80 but then sort of lost interest because I didn't realize what the end game was.
Fast forward to a couple months ago and I decided to try playing again.
Then I discovered that my "meh" gear from years ago was really crap so I started upgrading my armor and weapons.
I started participating in the world boss events like Teq, Statterer, Giant worm, etc. Those are pretty fun and the loot drops helped upgrade my gear a bit. (BL auctions also helped ;)
Then I made my first Ascended long bow and am working on the short bow now.
I still haven't ponied up for HoT or the new expansion - just not really sure I'd get my $ out of it for another $50. So I still die a horrible death if I fall from high places. :)
Trying an Elementalist now. Not sure I have the hang of her yet.

Guild Wars 2 hits Steam in November, and expansion 3 launches in 2021

8 years after its initial release, Guild Wars 2, with all 'Living World' content including The Icebrood Saga, is finally coming to Steam in November...the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire expansions will also be available for purchase on Steam at their regular prices...the bad news is that existing Guild Wars 2 accounts cannot be converted to Steam...

Developer ArenaNet has also announced Guild Wars 2’s third major expansion, 'End of Dragons' is scheduled to launch in 2021...it will "take players on a journey to Cantha, the mysterious island nation in the south that has been neither seen nor heard from for over 200 years"...

I'll never forgive them for that first year it launched. Warrior class totally bugged, would get stuck in the ground, couldn't move, they fucked with drop rates to funnel people through the gift shop, introduced some grind endgame bs.

Yeah, they did some sketch things. Bunch of my buddies got banned for using a vendor that they forgot to remove from beta.

I remember that stuff but I was more into just exploring and completing the areas. Did 99% solo except the last two missions that I needed a friend for. Took 5 years to get a friend to stick with it to complete lol.

ArenaNet has announced the final release date of Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons, the third expansion to its fantasy MMORPG...End of Dragons is officially set to debut on February 28th, priced at $29.99...the expansion takes Guild Wars 2 players to the region of Cantha, first introduced in Guild Wars: Factions...

Ack I need to catch up on story. Just never enough time. I think I'm 1.5 expansions behind now lol. Only a few story missions passed getting my first Mount though I have the areas all explored out.

Hmm, seems a little OP but as a primary solo player I appreciate a lot of the functions.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, Guild Wars 2 is coming to Steam on August 23 in addition to an in-game event. You can play with a free account, or purchase the entire collection. ArenaNet says the complete collection will be available off Steam at a later date. The 10th anniversary also heralds quality of life changes to the game to make it more welcoming to new players. The renderer was updated to DirectX 11, so hopefully the performance issues on new hardware will be a thing of the past.
