The new "died in the line of duty" thread

wh00ps...

and there are only 2 engines that i know the sizes for... one is the 1.7l (or is it 0.7l) in my mother's 91 escort lx and the other is the 350cc chevy that my partially addled uncle is constantly talking about. apparently it's pretty good for hotrodding.

that's what i hear... incidentally, i was talking to that uncle about hotrodding a vw bus the other day when he mentioned that engine :D i have a disturbed and twisted mind.

i can fix those mobos quite likely... radio shacks in small towns are still useful, especially if you know already exactly what you are looking for ;)
... and there's always frooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooogle for when tha shack loses a wall.
i've tried replacing capacitors... with capacitors from another dead motherboard that looked fine:p (the capacitors anyways - not bulging like the rest) i should probably try new capacitors, shouldn't i now. but i think that when the capacitors went on these boards they took the rest of the voltage circuitry with them... new mosfets, anyone? i think i'll try it on one, but it isn't really worth it to me. these motherboards don't support athlon XP chips, and we don't have enough PSUs anyways (you saw that pic too, right?:()

we're planning to procure a few dually boards (one or two) and some DDR for them. and some new processors, too (duron 1.8's most likely)

we'll see what happens, though.

i'm still willing to take one or two... if i can't fix it, oh well, it's only like $5 worth of parts that i've lost-- no biggie at all.

That would be a 1.9 liter if my memory serves me correctly. I'm sure they used the 1.9 up until 1997 when they moved to the 2.0.

heh... bigger than i thought.

well... either way it doesn't go past 80 too willingly, and it feels like it's about to fall apart at 75.

Hmm. Where to find a boxen box? I can probably ship it to you as soon as I find a box, PM me an address.

My wife's K7S5A and 1GHz Duron finally ate it.

Should be receiving the new Athlon64 3000+ and MSI nForce4 Ultra tomorrow
:D

My Epox 8K7A+ died and got replaced with a MSI K7N2Delta-L. Still rocking a 1.2GHz THUNDERBIRD though. :( When I do upgrade it'll be HUGE. 4+ years in the making.

Quiet about the K7S5A and 1 Ghz Duron. That's the newest system I just picked up and started folding with. And so far, it's cranking out 600 pointers just fine.

Damn, I think I was jinxed or hexed or something.

Lost my Duron 1Ghz system. Luckily only the hard drive died in it and I knew it wasn't in the best of shape. However, it may be a few days before I can get it back up and running. :(

A friend will temporarily donate a 60 gig drive that I have previously used before and I may toss that in there if I can't find something else.

Looks like I'm going to lose both my 40 gig hard drives in my main system when I get my income tax refund. Toss one in my son's system that I'm going to build and the other one in this system.

Shhh....the boxen I gave to my sister is that exact combo! It's only been folding since June of last year, so we'll see how that holds up. My other computers seem to be holding up well considering they have been folding for just about a year virtually non-stop.

It's too late for me. Mine already died.

I'm probably going to take my son to my parents' house for the weekend so I should have time to get a new hard drive in it and get it folding again. Well, after I get done dealing with my ex this evening. Hopefully she doesn't piss me off and make me want to go to the bar since there would be a good chance I wouldn't make it back to the computer until sometime tomorrow afternoon. Need to get the boxen finished soon.

First off I would like to solute all of you guys for being specially bred humans willing to work their PCs to death for the sake of a cause they probably won't see benefit from...thats courageous

On a lighter note I am a noob to hard core folding like you guys here and you talk about "Caps" which I am assuming capacitors, and if I remember correctly electricity is flowing through them while the computer is on. Then you talk about leaking and broken caps and this has me wondering what/where caps are, how likely do they leak and break, and what causes them to leak and break, any fixes? Thanks

Capacators are those shory cylinder things that stick out of your motehrbaord...probably lots aroudn your CPU. Them leaking i dont think is to common, but when they do, its the end. I havnt heard of a fix...dont think there is. But, if you have a dead board break one open. Purple goo is inside.

On topic....i just lost an old 500mhz machine to a power surge. The line of duty didnt kill it, but it still died while cruching numbers and heating my room.

The leaking is evident when the tops of the cap starts to bulge and then they get a stain from the guts leaking out, they over heat and can burn the circuts in a board. if caught in time they can be replaced and the board is fine, if not it was a waste of money for the new caps, as the board is fried.

of course if the board is an old IBM, you have to decide if spending $25.00 on it is worth it or just go look for one you can overclock, so you can fry it quicker :D

Lost my 500Mhz book pc yesterday, was changing it to a new UPS and it wouldn't turn back on, let it set with power off and it tries to start but can't display and only gets about half way posted before it hangs by the sound.

aught to keep me busy during the commercals, as the 24 at Daytona is on this weekend, god i love live feeds :D

of course i can look at it sunday afternoon as the only thing on will be some football game :D

This P3 I have is a slot 1 and I was wondering if anybody knew of any good motherboards for it. Incase I decide to join the good fight and run this thing into the ground. Also overclocking would be a plus. Thanks. But it's a P3 550 from gateway 5 years ago, would the lock be in the chip or on the board?

I dont remember but I have an old 550 celeron running at 850. The way I acomplished this is by using a slocket. There are jumpers you can set for FSB and such. The celeron chip was supposed to be a 66 FSB so it was very easy just to set that slocket at a 100 FSB an there is your overclock!
Hope this helps and welcome to the obsesion! :D

Well, this really isn't the forum for this, but you might want to check out any Slot 1 offering from Asus or Abit, as those brands allow for adjustment of FSB and core voltage.

Good ones:

Asus P3B-F
Asus P3V4X
Abit VT6X4
Abit VA6
Abit BX6-2
Abit BE6-2
Abit BH6
Abit BF6
Soyo SY-6VCA (just got me one for $20 USD- shipped! heh. :D)

Please note that any of these boards will run a Tualatin-core Celeron at 133 FSB if you have a proper Slot-T adapter - e.g. the Upgradeware one. The PowerLeap ones are okay as well, but expensive.

I may have lost a 20 gig WD hard drive in the line of folding, I got the Duron 1 Ghz back up and running finally. Luckily, not much lost other than about a week's worth of folding time.

Anyone got any hints for completely clearing the mbr and formatting of an IBM Deathstar 120GXP?

I had SuSE 9.1 running on the thing, but I'll need to switch to Windows 2000. Unfortunately, the SuSE and 2000 install programs are freezing in mid-install...issue seems to be the mbr from the previous install. Hints, kudasai.

I lost my el-cheapo Speedstream (Circuit City $9.99 closeout 2 years ago) wireless access point switch overnight. I have had troubles with my main machine with it's wired Ethernet connection over the last month where once or twice a day it would lose connectivity and require a re-boot. This morning no connection, re-boot, still no connection. I look under the desk and no lights on the router (not good). I did a power-cycle after unplugging for 5 minutes and when I powered back up I got a red status light as well as flashing lights on each of the ports  .

Thanksfully Best Buy has a DLink Combo package of a Wireless G Router with a G laptop card for $19.99 :D after rebates. I guess I know where I am going for lunch today.

All three machines at home are folding on the 600 pointers and I think 2 of the 3 will finish them up early this evening so I should be able to get it place before they need more work.

Fold On!!

fdisk /mbr is your friend. :D

Ah, just had a Celey 2.66's hard drive die.. and the warrenty expired in October wouldn't you know :( Formating an 80 gig drive now though so it won't be down long.

just lost my main rig to swollen/leaking capacitors

thats the 3rd boxen this year already :(

Do you have an UPS between your box and the world? I have never had the problem you are talking about.

There was a huge batch of bad caps a couple of years ago just about every manufacturer got hit. Swollen, leaky caps are pretty common on the right age mobo.

Well this morning we lost a beloved member of the family... the P3 866 mhz did its final run in the sun. Best I can tell it turned in its last WU and then died, but it won't do anything. Oh well just a good excuse to get to the parts store and pick up another boxen.

Well if I mystically disappear, assume it ended badly. :D

about to flash my a7n8x-e deluxe to uberbios to enable 2.9vdimm. i'm gonna use it on my unarmored (no heatsink) samsung ram.

wish me luck!

Another hd died on me today, took out the generic powersupply and replaced it with an antec true power I had taken out of one of my machines the other day.

I powered it up and the hd went to the grave. I am in the process of splitting up partitions on my 80gb to get my dual p3 xeon back into the fight.

I am crying right now because I have to take this 80gb and format it in another computer. It somehow won't format in my dually because of it's size.

Had the front intake fan, CPU fan, and Northbridge fan on the P4 3.2ghz (Abit IC7-Max3 motherboard) die this morning. Ordering new fans shortly.
