The Elder Scrolls Online

...

So yes, this game is a complete waste of time in my opinion. I guess if you live geographically closer to the servers then you might have a better experience. Right now it has a huge FAIL sticker slapped on it from me.

Wait, wtf...you don't like the game or recommend it because you have a shitty internet service? Instead of pointing blame where it is at you blame the game? Sorry your connection sucks but that isn't the games fault. I mean if it was widespread it would be one thing but considering my college buddy plays from Raleigh just fine I find it hard to believe that North Carolina is some black hole in regards to ESO.

As far as crafting you're doing it wrong. You don't use your stones to level up crafting, you deconstruct to raise your crafting. Find a crafting buddy to make stuff then deconstruct it. You use your stones, oil, thread, etc...to enhance your gear. As you get higher ranks in crafting you get higher success rates if you're going to focus on crafting skills. You have to level crafting just like you do your combat skills.

So what's the deal with this? I haven't had the chance to play yet, but found this interesting.

If you enter a 4 man instance any of the following can happen....

  • chests in instances are FFA ?
  • If you decide to boot a player from a group and recruit a new 4th. Original group member can take part in instance without being grouped and still loot chests
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLBHjwCw088

Ya instances are a bit of a mess now. I don't do public dungeon runs anymore because people bum rush the chests instead of waiting until the end of a dungeon like a good group should. There is a bug where a booted player isn't removed from the instance so you can't add another member until they leave. It is kinda wonky right now. Playing with friends though you don't experience this.

I went ahead and did the 6 month sub as I'm actually enjoying the game immensely. The immersion factor and quests are top notch, literally probably the best around. The graphics are gorgeous and the engine handles large scale PvP flawlessly.

PC Gamer has posted their ESO review.

Every modern Elder Scrolls game has had a moment near the beginning where you step out into a new landscape and think I've never been somewhere like this before. In Morrowind it hit as you left Seyda Neen and realised that the road ahead went in two directions, and that you could follow either of them, and that each direction would take you on an entirely different journey through the world. In Oblivion it occurred when you escaped out onto the edge of Lake Rumare and saw the hills rise ahead of you along the road to Bruma. In Skyrim you emerged onto a mountainside with the Throat of the World on one side, the valley of Falkreath on the other, and a dragon in the skies above.

I have spent thirty hours playing The Elder Scrolls Online and I'm still waiting for that moment. I'm waiting for anything like that moment. I'm waiting for the point when this MMO sits up and makes a claim to be anything but familiar. This isn't simply about whether The Elder Scrolls Online works as an Elder Scrolls game in its own right—it doesn't, let's put paid to that notion now—but whether it can justify being one of the most expensive games on PC. Those 'stepping into the light' moments weren't just about showing off fancy new tech; they were a promise. You are going to have an adventure. This is going to be worth your time. It does not seem unjust or unrealistic to hold The Elder Scrolls Online to account along similar lines.

They SERIOUSLY need to fix these loading screen issues with Cyrodiil, it's impossible to pvp for many people because if you try to get into cyrodiil or even use the wayshires to move around the map you get stuck on the loading screen and have to constantly restart your client over and over to finally get it to load and not hang.

I'm not even bothering with PVP (even though it's the MAIN reason I got the game) because of this.

Meh, for shits and giggles I went through his post history and he hates on every single game, hell he hates on everything. Literally, it was fascinating how much he hates on everything, kinda like watching Jerry Springer episodes. You know it's a train wreck but you just can't pull yourself away. Apparently he won't be happy until hentai can get neurologically interfaced into his cerebral cortex.

Just another negative nancy that won't ever be pleased.

Well I'm flattered you took the time to skim over six years of posts to justify such a blanket statement. Not sure why you seem to think that your opinion of this game is correct while mine is not hence I "hate everything". I played the beta as well and came to the same conclusion, it sucks and its nut these people actually expect a monthly sub but whatever. Sorry but when I spend money on a rig I don't want to play 1997 graphics on a 2013 rig.

My post was an OPINION and expectation of graphics standards for 2014. My opinion is not any more valid than yours and just because I disagree with your opinion doesn't quite inspire me to go through your posts to smear you. Enjoy your game.

Star Citizen: shit graphics
Diablo 3: shit graphics
ESO: shit graphics

see the pattern...

Despite them being graphically superior or on par with anything else in their genre you think they all have shit graphics. If your opinion is that ESO has 1997 graphics your opinion is wrong, don't know what else to tell you. What you posted isn't an opinion, it is a statement of fact. Maybe if you took a second to reword it and say you don't like the graphics that would be an opinion, but hey, not my fault the basics of the English language escape you.

Just out of curiosity what games do you think have excellent graphics? Obviously you're interested in these genres so I'm curious as to what games you compare them to to form your "opinion".

I'm on Time Warner Cable 50 / 5 internet service. In BF4 connecting to Atlanta, GA servers my latency is 19ms. The furthest I would play is Chicago and my latency is 40ms. I don't think it's my ISP. Nephew is on DSL from Embarq. Whatever their fastest package is. He is lagged to death also.

So I purchased the Imperial edition to give this mmo a chance.

PROS:
Nice graphics when set on the highest setting.

CONS:
Absurd loading times! SERIOUSLY? WTF.. and I got a very fast ssd. This is ridiculous! Sometimes I am starin at the loading screen wondering if this game has crashed or not.. FUCKING LOADING SCREEN WORST OF ALL TIME.
Mount is SLOW AS HELL. I don't care if you can level this up but its slow as hell.
Quests are typical boring mmo style.
Cinematic is LAUGHABLE.
Zero innovations.
Dumbed down UI (I think meant for consoles imo)
Pets are A HUGE JOKE (if you play a sorcerer). Very crappy AI here.
Everybody looks the same from armor to looks.
Rampant BOTS!!!!!! This mmo is too bot friendly!! You go in dungeons you see 10-20 bots in one area just to kill a boss/mob over and over. BOTS BOTS BOTS. You report one and 50 shows up.

WORST MMO OF 2014. People are IN DENIAL about this mmo. I paid 74 bucks and paid the price.....oh well its just money. People who are saying this MMO IS IMMERSIVE is IN DENIAL AND LYING.... you can't be immersed when YOU GOT LOADING TIMES ISSUES and this is a very common thing with this game so I know its not just me. You can't be immersed when you go into a dungeon only to see bots up the ass standing by a boss/mob you need to kill. Dungeons are FUCKED UP. Immersion MY ASS.

This post is so 1997. Back when people took PC Gamer reviews seriously

People use the "my opinion" crap too loosely.

Can we get your thoughts on the middle east situation?

Oh look, an apologist trying to marginalize someone because he wrote something negative about a game that should be above reproach.

Or maybe someone trying to be funny? BiH doesn't even play the game. Love how you dog on anyone who likes the game but support those who don't. Double standard much?

Personally for me ESO is the perfect mix between LoTRO pve and DAoC pvp. I enjoy it and my rl friends enjoy it. The game isn't perfect and it has some wonky stuff right now some really wonky stuff and it misses the mark on a few issues but none of which I would consider key.

The need to absolutely shit on this game by a few of you perplex me. Different strokes for different folks but some of the complaints are flat out asinine while others are rightfully deserved.

I shouldn't have to white knight the game but the fud was getting pretty over the top. Personally I can care less as long as I enjoy the game and my core group of friends enjoy it that is all that matters. I think it is a great Elder Scrolls game and I'll continue to enjoy it as long as it continues to be so. Been playing them since 96 and hopefully they continue to advance the single player series beyond ESO as I'll hopefully continue to enjoy the series for many more years.

The PC Gamer score is a bit low I think. The game is not perfect by any means, but it also isn't as poorly done as a 68 would suggest at first glance. Personally, I would probably give it a score in the low 80's. In the end though, my friends and I have been having fun, so that's all that matters.

Well they gave COD:Ghosts a 67, so I'd guess it's not far off the mark. I think we're all just used to all games purchasing 80+ scores. In a 100 point system, 68 is well above average.

Out of a 100 point system, wouldn't 68 be a D+? Not really above average..

Those aren't bots, they are players farming blues from the boss of every public dungeon.

You're thinking in school terms or something =P

50 would be average because it's half way between 0 and 100... at least that's what i was thinking anyway.

Mean =|= median. I would say anything above 75 is considered good. That is a 7.5/10. IMO, a 5-7.5 is fair, and 5 and below is poor.

The term you're looking for is median, not average (mean). They are not the same thing. Even then, 50 is probably not going to be the median of a spread of game review scores.

I think a lot of people view scores that are out of 100 in the light of the school grading system. I suppose 12+ years of it being ingrained into every kid in the US will do that. Personally, I think with the review score inflation that seems to go on these days, I consider anything in the 80's to be "average" and 90+ to be "good."

But in all seriousness, they gave Dragon Age 2 a 94....yeah....that's how far we should trust any of their reviews.

You understand me too well man, I was trying to debate if the comment was meant for me or not, so I held off.

I did enjoy the beta, but ultimately decided that I can't really devote too much time to the game, or as much as I'd like anyway, plus the fact that no one in my inner circle was willing to give it a try (die hard WoW fans, who don't like change) really made it an easy decision to hold off. I'll probably go back at some point and give it a shot regardless, as I really like what I'm hearing about the quality of quests from you guys who are further into the game. I'm a sucker for TES and from what I've seen in the beta, it was pretty well done in terms of quests.

But in all seriousness, they gave Dragon Age 2 a 94....yeah....that's how far we should trust any of their reviews.

Who cares? Not the same reviewer. If you want to play the exception game you can find one in pretty much anything.

Ya the whole 100 point system seems fairly well ingrained and I too fall into the trap of using the a - f grade percentages. I feel the game is above average in terms of an mmo even as an elder scrolls game it is above average. I felt like oblivion was the worst of the series and morrowind the best with skyrim right behind then daggerfall. Still holding out where ESO would place in that pantheon but right now the story is pretty solid.

That pcgamer review was based and flawed from the start. Most reviews were because they were focused on the elder scrolls experience. To some extent I feel that ESO does an excellent job of capturing the locales and environments perfectly. So there are times when I'm playing and I just stop and look around amazed that I'm at a certain spot that I recognized from daggerfall or morrowind. The audio and visual cues are right from previous games. The lore books are from previous games, the recipes, racials, and lore are all from previous games and series. Dueling with Shegorath is a load of fun and listening to arch mage Shalidor get his panties in a bunch is hilarious. Having choices in quests that actually matter is refreshing, I mean some choices can affect entire quest arcs and your choices can come back and haunt you much later.

Yes right now dungeons are currently different from what we're used to and their decision regarding them seems fairly asinine and hopefully they change it. Load times? 15 seconds isn't terribly long but there is room for improvement in optimization and load times I agree. Slow horses? You get your horse at lvl 1 and it gets faster over time. I remember travel times in eq, daoc, and eve...There were times where I could go take a shower, prep dinner or do homework and still not be at my destination. 15 to 30 minute travel times seemed the norm back then, ESO is generous with way shrines and with your horse there is no reason why your on it for more than a minute or two unless your just off exploring. Horses have unlimited sprint so use that bug to your advantage.

ESO is pretty close to a perfect launch as one could hope for. If you compare previous mmo launches ESO is probably in the top 2 or 3 of all time. Complaints are fine they help make the game better and there is a lot of room for improvement but the game as it stands now is pretty decent and gives a great pve and rvr experience.

Well sure... I didn't mean average in the mathematical sense lol... I'm talking more along the lines of:

How was our service today?
1 - - - - - 5 - - - - - 10
sucks average excellent!
Personally, I think with the review score inflation that seems to go on these days, I consider anything in the 80's to be "average" and 90+ to be "good."

Exactly. The problem is that even average games are given scores that are too high.

They went with The Elder Scrolls brand for their MMO because of the cache and built up goodwill, so yes of course it's going to be compared to other Elder Scrolls games.

Can't say on one hand "Buy this because its an Elder Scrolls game" and on the other hand "Well don't compare it to other Elder Scrolls games".

I really enjoy the action oriented combat and PVP system.

I am a casual player and have put in 20 hours and am not quite level 15. There is plenty to do, quest, collect skyshards, explore, run 4-man dungeons, PVP, craft, trade, farm bosses, ETC.

The game is very challenging, it took me 3 different attempts with 3 different groups at running the first 4-man dungeon Fungal Grotto. The bosses feel like action oriented single-layer game type bosses. It was that much sweeter finally finishing it. I have 2 more level 15 4-man dungeons to run too.

Not only that but there are 3 factions with 3 different starting areas to experience with different character types.

So much to do, so little time. This is a long-term game for me for sure. Great game!

Sure you can. No one expected world of warcraft to be an rts did they? The world and lore is what makes the game. Fallout 3 is a good example of that. Originally there were complaints from the purists that fallout couldn't work as a third or first person game. But overtime the gameplay won pretty much everyone over.

Will ESO win people over I doubt it. It is an mmo. Could design choices have been made to make it more open world like a normal elder scrolls game? I guess but how would that look? That is the hard part people haven't really stated. From the complaints just on this board alone they vary so much it doesn't matter which way they went people were going to complain because it is an elder scrolls game. Seems like Zenimax picked the middle ground and stuck with it.

That's actually a very good comparison. I say that, because I was one of those 'purists' who was won over :p

So was I haha. I play the original fallout at least once a year with different builds. I swear if time could be tallied on those games I swear it is probably over 5k hours devoted to the series. I was up to 600 between fallout 3 and new vegas.

Sigh...sometimes I miss the old college days where I didn't have a ton of responsibility. Oh well...

Yes, this game is very buggy at launch. I had it with an opening quest so I couldn't complete the beginning island. So the entire time that I was doing the next area I was reading all of this stuff about things I hadn't experienced yet. Some areas didn't completely unlock for me so I ended up being level 5 in a level 8 zone. Needless to say that didn't go well.

So today after the patch, I can suddenly turn the quest in. Now I have level 5, 6, and 7 quests unlocked, but I have completely outgrown those areas. Now I'm doing them for charity I suppose as the rewards are completely useless. Would have been nice to have had higher than level 3 and 4 weapons and armor to fight those level 8 mobs!

At least I wasn't level 50 and unable to quest at all like the guy in the video. I don't blame him for gnashing his teeth at such a nasty bug.

In 5 mins you could of easily crafted a full set of lvl 8 armor and weapons.

You and I both...wish I had time to just literally do nothing but game for a month straight, pee breaks in between of course.

The graphics are fine for me, especially with mods.

It's those fucking animations that are horrible
