The Droid X

Yeah its fine, but laggy. Let me put it this way, its like scrolling at 10FPS vs 60FPS. Sure it gets it done, but the iPhone is just more fluid. And thats on a 600mhz processor (3GS). Double tap to zoom on text is also much more fluid on the iPhone.

The point is, dont get too excited just because a phone has a 1ghz processor. Focus ont he experience.

Actually it isn't, but I await a carefully reasoned argument from you as to why I'm wrong. Ive seen videos of every android device scroll web sites. All are choppy. Are you denying this? I can link several websites right now. Lets hear your argument bro.

You're looking for a carefully reasoned argument to debate preference? That's not exactly possible, "bro". As I said, I had the iPhone, I was completely unimpressed. I'll take an android device over it any day of the week.

Define laggy.

My Droid @ 1Ghz. Feels fluid and fine to me. Show me a comparison video of your iPhone

Looks pretty good on this site of all text. iPhone is just a little smoother thats all. So what? The point was, dont focus so much on processor power, because Android needs more then ios. Thats it. And if you are fine with your android phone, sweet. Good stuff.

If the site was completely preloaded, as was in this dudes comparison video, theres no checkerboards. Thats just for data over 3G. And that rarely happens to me with the 3GS even over 3G as its such a fast device.

You post saying that your iPhone is better on some arbitrary metric so when I offer up evidence and ask for a comparison you just.....try to deflect?:confused:

I'm curiously interested in seeing just what this "smoother" looks like hence my asking for a video.

You cannot say that a 1Ghz proc is NOT better than a 600Mhz processor as you seem to imply in your other post. I for one, feel a huge difference in everything.

Here you go bro:

http://www.androidcentral.com/droid-eris-and-iphone-3gs-browser-speed-test

At 4:48 the iphone crushes all. And you can see the scrolling on the mobile version of the site, the iphone scrolls fast and smooth, the droid...jerky.

As it says on this DROID LOVER site:

"Bad news for Droid lovers: the iPhone 3GS beat the heck out of the Droid in the above test. Other tests taken after the video weren't quite as dramatic as what you're seeing here, but facts is facts: the iPhone 3GS does load and render pages faster than the Droid."

Yes, droid site, facts are facts.

A couple of things,

That video is shortly after the release of the Droid hence no updates or tweaks from Motorola. It'd be a much more fair comparison to say the iPhone in it's first release vs the Droid. ;)

Also, different carriers when it probably should have been done on Wi-Fi. You cannot account for the different network speeds during that time of day and such.

That Droid is also stock speed and using stock browser. I'm OCed to 1Ghz and using XScope browser which is developed off of WebKit, the same stuff that Safari is developed off of. So that could also make a difference.

So in reality, not a really fair comparison test if we were to say, best at loading web pages/feeling smooth. Sure I'm using tweaks/third party software, but that's what Androids about right?

And if we were to make a stock comparison, I'd say that comparing an iPhone 3GS to the upcoming 2.2 FroYo update would be a much closer or even having the Droid surpass the 3GS in that particular test. http://www.droid-life.com/2010/06/05/post-your-motorola-droid-froyo-quadrant-scores/ You can see there just how much the 2.2 update improves the Droid's performance.

Not saying you could be wrong but really, using a video/comparison from almost 6 months ago is a bit silly don't you think? ;) Though that does make me wish I had an iPhone around to do a test with by myself......time to go hunt down someone with an iPhone.

This was posted in Nov. 2009

Considering it's been nearly 6 months and with several new Android based phones released (with two major ones in the next couple of months), not to mention Froyo hitting most android based phones, I'd say this test is outdated.

I will however say that after messing around with my GF's 3GS, I'm definitely impressed with the iPhone...unfortunately not enough to force me to a lesser superior carrier (AT&T), not to mention get behind Apples ridiculous warranty policies with the phone.

Actually, I'll do a test tonight with an iPod touch (should be comparable yes? Maybe?) vs my Droid? Or is that not fair? (I have no idea how beefy the iPod touch is, I would assume it's just as capable in terms of browsing/loading as an iPhone)

I just loaded up IGN and the scrolling was pretty smooth even with the random flash ad popping up. It was a Sprint ad too lol.

I think it depends on the generation.

All great points guys, I'm sure the droid has seen some improvements over the past 6 months. It definitely is a quickly evolving device. As seen in the video, the scrolling is what Im focused on so the fact that the iPhone loaded the page faster over 3G network isnt worth focusing on.

But I've been following android phones and have seen videos of all the latest ones, including the EVO, and the scrolling is choppier. As Ive said many times, its not bad and is perfectly usable, but it is choppier. Now this might improve with Froyo, sure. But if the 3GS is already rocking this fast on a 600mhz proc, the iPhone 4 with a 1ghz A4 will be freakin blazing fast (as has been reported by users of the ipad).

Souless, the comparison will only be valid with a 3rd generation ipod touch. It needs the new processor from the 3gs to be valid. But I would say why bother? Youre happy with your Android phone so why prove something to me?

I'm just saying that from my experience, it "feels" like ios does more with less. Which is great for iphone users, but means that a direct mhz to mhz comparison of phone specs is invalidated.

I have the latest iPod Touch available :)

More so that I'm more curious to "see" the difference for myself and any members that are curious as well. This is [H] after all

I'm sure it is acceptable, and you're right its not a big deal. I just think that instead of jacking off to spec sheets, android users should realize that its about the smoothness and the user experience, not the mhz.
Both of which are fantastic on all modern Android phones.

Now why are you in this thread again?

I had the evo for 2 weeks and I sent it back due to built of the phone and the choppiness of the scrolling... Mind you, i don't have an iPhone.. Sold my 3GS almost a year ago... I have however the iPad... :D. This iPad destroyed my smartphone experience... Maybe because of the fluidness and smoothness of the OS...

I can even make a phone and txt with this (3G) and I barely use my pc... I'm not bashing the evo or the droid community... For some reason, the iPhone/iPad OS is a lot smoother than the evo... I'm not sure about the htc incredible... Some say, the incredible is even faster than the evo...

But that droid X looks so snappy... Seems way snappier than the evo.. That I would take over the evo..

I'd say any price stated now would be premature. I really do hope this goes for $200 with new 2yr. June 23rd couldn't come soon enough...

Is that the date this phone is being released? Do you have any evidence to back up the claim?

I'm not an iphone/apple fan at all but I have to agree with kre62. I have yet to see an android phone with 1ghz be a fluid and smooth with webpage scrolling as the iphone 3gs. I can only imagine what the iphone 4 will do. Since you did that test video do this for me. Go to espn.com and scroll to the bottom and click on their "view full version" or something of the sort so your not viewing the browser based version. Record a video of that and see how smooth it is. I tried doing this at the verizon store when I played with the incredible and firstly, I couldn't even find the full version page cause it wasn't there and 2nd any other page I went to that will filled with txt and HEAVY on images it wouldn't be as fluid as when I would try the same page on a friends 3gs.

Like I said I'm not fanboy and I want android to beat iphone beacuse I'm on verizon and I want a sick phone with 4.3 inch screen (like this new motorolla) with good specs/hardware but I want the experience to be nice with GOOD apps and fluid respone.

Thanks for being honest man. I know Android fans want their phones to be the end-all-be-all, but we need to also give credit where credit is due. And we have to remember why it is that the iPhone is what it is in the market. Millions of people are dealing with At&t (although Ive never had a problem and get 1900 kbps here in LA all the time, which is over twice as fast as Verizon here) so they can have the iphone user experience. And its damn good. I just installed OS4, and it's even smoother, with multitasking now enabled plus folders. I think if Apple implements a dashboard style widget system, with pinch in bringing a dashboard overlay down with widgets, plus used the Web OS guy to put Web OS style notifications in, it'd be pretty much perfect. I'd count on the notifications in the next few months. I emailed Jobs about the dashboard idea.

here in the bay area AT&T's 3G is a bloody joke.. they constantly try to claim its better then it really is.. you can sit in a 30x30ft spot and walk around the area and you will constantly lose 3G service.. its spotty as hell and no where near the speeds they claim.. your only hope is living in a major city like LA, SD, SF, or sacramento.. anything less then that and good luck with getting constant 3G service.. id rather deal with verizons slower net and get 3G here in my house then to drive 10 miles down the road to barely get AT&T 3G service..

I cant believe I'm the first one to say that that phone is the ugliest, most ridiculous thing ive seen. Whats next, people holding IPAD sized phones against their heads? The Evo was over the limit, but still an attractive phone. This phone is a brick, with big hardware buttons from 1980. Hell, this phone is similar in size to those early cell phones. What a joke.

You can make a phone call from your Ipad using a headset and Skype. You dont have to hold it up to your ear.:D

kre62 = brainwashed. I really liked the part where he bashed someone for not having an iPhone experience yet hasn't owned or used an Android phone.

Enjoy your irrationally locked-down Apple device designed for sheep, the rest of us will happily enjoy the new revolution and evolution without you.

Show me a 1980's cell phone anywhere near this thin...

God damn you people complaining of size must be women or midgets...speaking of women, the person holding the Droid X is one so you have to consider that when speaking of size. I held my incredible in a similar manner to one of the pictures in the gallery linked and honestly the X in her hand didn't look that much bigger in comparison to the Incredible in mine.

BTW - sold my Incredible for $540 on ebay today, Droid X here I come.

Have you handled an Incredible? It as smooth as any other phone I've seen including a 3GS..

Minus the mountain ridge-like back :p

I somehow talked a VZW rep into bumping up my NE2 date to get in on some X-hotness!

How do you know this? In actuality I have several friends with android phones and have spent plenty of time with them. Also, if a person craves the "open garden" experience of junk, half-assed applications, they can always jailbreak the iphone.

That would be best of both worlds wouldn't it? The iphone's amazing app store, plus all the garbage open apps you can handle. Funny how people are willing to root their android devices, but dont think about the fact that they can unlock the iphone just as easily. So why not have it all?

Alright guys I think i know whats going on here...

So many people like the Android phones because...They don't have to deal with Steve Jobs and his BS hype! (kre62 you've clearly fallen for the Apple Hype as I call it, where it's apple and only apple and everything else is wrong.)

Yea, I said it...

Thats cool man you can say what you want. In reality I hate all things apple except the phone. I am a Windows user through and through. I would never buy a mac, but they got this phone right.

Someone please explain the reasoning behind why Verizon makes me wait two years before I can upgrade my phone?

Shit, the Droid X and the Incredible are going to be discontinued by then.

Have you handled an Incredible? It as smooth as any other phone I've seen including a 3GS..

Did you not read my entire post? I said I played with the phone at a verizon store. It doesn't take long to get the feel of a phone either. And as I said mutiple times I'm no apple/jobs fan but I'm not the type of person that will talk shit about a device just becaues it isn't available to me and to make me feel better about my android purchase (which is seriously what 99% of you are doing). I'll give credit where credit is due, and YOU have to give credit to the iphone as completely reshaping the mobile market. I sincerly doubt we would be where we're at without the iphone 2007 launch and all of the upgrades they did every year. Can you imagine trying to run an app like we have currently back in 2006? Remember competition is a good thing for us the cosumer and without the iphone there wouldn't be a whole lot.

And so people don't call me brainwashed as well, I'll say it a 4th time. I have always been a windows/pc guy and will never buy a mac/ipod/ipad/any product that apple makes, besides maybe the iphone and even then ONLY when verizon releases it cause ATT is just a shitty carrier who drops calls all the time. I've been on verizon for about 7 years now and plan on stayin with them for the forseeable future.

Agreed, unfortunately they chose a shitty carrier...

Hopefully it won't be for long...

Verizon is probably get a contract from Apple once the iphone4 hype dies down in a few month. I bet Apple made a deal with ATT (since the contract is ending/ended) that they would get the initial promotion for the iphone 4 launch so they could lock down a few million 2 yr contracts. People that want the iphone 4 even though it's sold out aren't going to go out and buy an andriod phone if they can't find an iphone. They'll just come back tomorrow and try their luck again. I'm guessing once apple can meet the demand (probably around end of the summer) and the iphone 4 hype dies down verizon will make an annoucement that they are selling the phone as well and are aiming at holidays 2010.

You can upgrade the phone any time you like. All you need to do is pay full price. :)

Why can't I just extend my contract for another two years and upgrade anytime?

Why can't I just extend my contract for another two years and upgrade anytime?

That would be a huge waste of money on the phone on their part. These phones ares subsized to you at a fraction of the cost. Most of them are around 500-800.

I think your time frame is a little off. I'd honestly expect it to be another year. At next years WWDC expect a CMDA Verizon iPhone. It'll probably be Steve's 'One more thing.... iPhone 4S for Verizon!'.

Most analysts think that the contract expires in early/middle 2011 as a result of ATT getting the iPad.

Edit: Also, I doubt Apple would let Verizon say they are selling the iPhone. Everything would have to come from Apple.
