The Altcoin Thread

Thanks! We already managed to snag a block.

Looks like there's a wallet update coming in the next day or two. Interesting coin - first Proof of Stake coin other than NXT I've looked at. It's quiet and under the radar, hence me picking it as a pool target. Right now there's really only one major pool for it from what I can tell.

In other news, KlondikeCoin has been picked up by CoinedUp, which means it's been picked up by Coinmarketcap, which means it has attracted the attention of a multipool. Network hash rate jumped from about 350MH/s to 1.1GH/s over night.

I'll get my little guys pointed at it tonight

Doge lingered at 214-216 for the longest time, now I wished I would have dumped at even 180 , might have to ride it out for a while and see what happens, been watching DGC it seems to be enjoying a surge, I did mine it a bit.

might be good news on KDC , I held some of that as well.

dogecoin has announced there will be no cap on coins, it will simply reduce to 10k per block forever

I think they are insane

imagine how fast scrypt hardware is going to be in a few years after a few generations of improvements

lol. you might as well put your money in USD if you want an unlimited currency.

Right now I'm mining RDD. Reddcoin, just released today. Already have 10K coins :D I love a low dificulty. Makes us low level cuda miners seems powerful. lol

To be fair, there is a strange increase in sale price after the news got out this morning.

Some people who seem to really know economics say this is a good thing.

At best I think it is an unproven thing that you can have theories one way or the other.

I also think it's unproven. Remember too that DOGE only has about a year left in its run whereas most other coins are designed for multi-year runs. I think this is the DOGE dev's only option of adding new coins to the market.

I'm still not sure what to think. Still gonna hold until the block split but I may re-evaluate my DOGE target and switch to mining something else in the meantime. Regardless of whether the news has been positively or negatively received, there still is the possibility of having a nice price bump then because the event itself is to mark a milestone and also a signal of the halving of future supply. I understand it's still a gamble, but it's still a risk I'm willing to take.

EDIT: Upon doing some reading myself, it's just as I was thinking. The devs want this to be in the hands of many, not in the wallets of a few big bag holders. Regardless, whether the news was taken as bad or not, it's still one of the more profitable coins out there still. As well, all of this speculation is based on... well... just opinion so far. The value has dropped a bit, but nothing irreversible... I'll keep an eye on it nonetheless.

Oh gawd could you imagine hundreds of multi-coin pools (if an easy to setup program that did it came about) ?

It would be horrifying.

I was watching multipool.us the other day and it switched to and from dogecoin literally a dozen times in 15 minutes. How does that benefit anyone ?!

That's the main concern I have with Multipool.us. It doesn't devote any decent time to any one coin. The constant switching can't be too good for profits.

I'm going to re-evaluate my DOGE targets as well and probably mine some other coins in the meantime, but I'm not going to dump now. I'll hold until the split (and perhaps even after if the split doesn't do much) and ride the wave. It's only a loss if you sell :)

Dunno why... logically, if you don't sell and hold, you haven't actually incurred a loss yet.

and if it keeps dropping and you cannot recover the money of course its a loss. People follow that advice as stocks and things TANK. Cutting your losses is the only sound advice

You have to ride the market. There's nothing wrong with cutting your losses if you want out, but it isn't the only option. It may take a while, but these coins can take off at any point without warning. Cutting your losses and dumping at a low price may get some of your investment back (whatever that investment was, money or time), but it also means you won't get any future earnings if they rebound, which they often do.

There are quite a few millionaires that rode the market and didn't sell when the chips were down.

I would only agree if something was falling in price that was beyond control and beyond recovery. So yes, context is the key.

In my experience almost all alt coins constantly just yoyo back and forth. Warren Buffett has a pretty simple formula for buying/selling. Buy in when you feel it's a good time to buy. Sell in increments while the price goes up. Buy when the price goes down (less than you sold for obviously). Rinse repeat. It's pretty easy to do on btce if you have done coin to play with. I probably made roughly $400 or so just on putting 4 ltc in there back in dec. The key is patience. Let everyone else freak out over their life savings and take advantage when they panic sell/buy.

wtf I'm getting my best hash rate by underclocking my visiontek 280x's core to 1010 right now sitting at 692 with default memory speed at 1500 (haven't tried changing that yet). Wonder why it would do that.

1500 is the best for 280x memory... after that the timings just tank

With the doge difficulty being so high, it is not very appealing to mine.
I did really well when I bought mooncoins and flipped them for doge a few days later. I just need to figure out the next coin to do this with.

according to a friend of mine who was a day trader and also knows a great deal about economics, he thinks what dogecoin did was very smart compared to bitcoin (he doesn't like cryptocurrencies in general but I asked him to look at what was going on)

since I respect what he thinks, I may have to rethink my opinion on all this

There's a SeaSonic 660W Platinum on NE for $80 AR right now. It's a good PSU for anyone who may have bought some 7850s recently. It could definitely power 3 of them, maybe even 4.

Unfortunately for me I may have just lost an entire rig. I had a rig shut off, and then it would not power back on. It would turn on for a second and then shut off. I left it overnight, and yesterday morning it powered on again, so I just ran it. This morning it was at the boot screen and there was a message about how the ASUS motherboard detected PSU power surges and shut off them system to prevent damage. So I moved some GPUs around, and I've only got a 7870 and 7790 mining in that system. It's an X850 PSU. But either way, it looks like something is going to have to be RMA'd.

Well, after many months, it looks like my initial hardware is finally starting to break down. I already have 2x 7950s that I sent out for RMA last week due one having fans go bad, and the other just stopped giving me a display. Now either a motherboard or PSU (I'm guessing it's the PSU) to go along with them. :(

Seasonic RMA is very good i had to RMA the same PSU a few months back.

Luckily I've not lost a GPU yet and i've been mining since the BTC days.

and friends don't let friends buy powercolor anyway

did you notice like 90% of the open box returned video cards on newegg are powercolor? lol

Yeah I'm not too big on PowerColor cards. But for me it's a $130 7950, 2x$120 7850s, and $110 7870 I've got from them, so I'll take it for the good hash rate per dollar. But the screws on the back of the 7850s are retarded. They stick so far out that if you sandwich a card right behind it, those screws will hit the other GPU's fans, so you have to try to align the GPUs as far apart as the mounting will allow. I'm not sure who thought those were necessary. The one card I no longer have is actually another 7850, which I kind of wish I still had so I could build a 7850 only rig. It's so much easier to work with a rig when all the cards match.

Otherwise, of all the PowerColor cards I've bought, I'm 3/5 on rebates so far, with most recent two being 2x7850s, so I've been okay in that department so far.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of grease I can buy for the GPU fans - preferably something I can just get on the way home from some hardware store? I think I should do some maintenance this weekend to extend the lives of my GPUs. It's really dusty out here in the desert and that dust does make it's way into the GPUs over time.

Try to find some light sewing machine oil. Failing that, some of that 3-in-1 machine oil should do nicely. Avoid anything like grease or WD40. Many types of grease harden over time causing too much friction and will cause fans to seize. WD40 will lubricate for a very short while but it will eventually evaporate and dry out also causing fans to seize.

Dupont makes a teflon based spray silicone grease I use on bike chains, not sure how it would do in the heat of a rig though.

I would plan on taking apart the gpu/heatsink at least twice a year to clean it up though, I found all kinds of dust on the card I took apart (and there was no warranty sticker on it)

I will second sewing machine oil. Worked 100% successful with no problems or reapplication needed for a 5850 for 1 year +, and a 5870 for 2 months~ so far.

I recently got a powercolor 7950, what settings do you use? Got all my others cards to work except that one properly.

Do any of you guys mine middlecoin? Did it switch to Vardiff? I thought it was fixed at 512 but I keep seeing "pool 0 difficulty changed to ___" and I don't seem to get any accepted shares. Anyone know?

Definitely not vardiff. It was changed on the server-side to 1024. It was suppose to be temp and back to 512 but I will believe it when I see it.

anyone have advice for an Asus R9290X-DC2OC-4GD5?

I was using my 7970 in my main gaming PC before and I had a low intensity and high intensity setting I was using so I could still use the computer...

I can't get crap for hash rate out of this r9 290x :(

and I'm using guiminer scrypt on this machine because it's the one we use around the house and the wife has to be able to turn the miner up or down.

*edit*
ok. So it was 14.1 drivers. Didn't know, but they introduce clock problems with mining. Back to 13.12 and I can get about 510kh while the computer is still usable or about 760 on my first try at high intensity... will tweak more tomorrow and report back.

should be able to get 850 or so, at least. I believe I got 890khs out of my brothers. No clue what the settings are anymore though.

Is your memory Elpida or Hynix? My 290 gets 880 at the worst. My 290's with Hynix memory get 970 hash. A 290X should do better than either of those.
