Switching to LCD

I'm looking to find a really high quality WS TN or S-IPS but there's a few things i need it to do...
My biggest problem with LCD's is that there's two different colors at the top and bottom of the monitor. I can't stand this!
My second biggest is playing FPS on widescreen. I would want my LCD to display an 800x600 source with two black bars on the side.
I also need it to run in 85hrz in this mode....

Are there any LCDs that can do this? Ive looked everywhere....
Thanks!

Its only for CoD4 and CS1.6, everything else ill play as maxed as I can. As to why? Competitive edge.

How do you get the edge with that res? seriously im asking cause maybe im doing it wrong !

there is non that can go past 75hz that I know of...

but as a semi-pro gamer, I would never go below 1024x768

I play CoD4 at Widescreen at 1680x1050 and 4x AA and almost a 2:1 KD Ratio.... also get 100-200fps on most maps.

I have really enjoyed my Samsung 226BW with its 2ms GTG response rate, there ZERO Ghosting.

btw what CoD4 Servers do you play on mostly? maybe I'll come buy sometime.

Ty for the advice but I've had a 226bw and I had to sell it because it was sub par.... ( I had a C panel btw)
This really isn't about the games, its about being able to run 800x600 in fixed aspect ratio in 75/85hrz. Is there a monitor that can do this?

In all honesty, if you're a competetive FPS gamer that plays at those types of settings you do not want to game on an LCD.

Any modern LCD will look fugly at 800x600. You'll have massive screen tearing (compared to your CRT) due to the 60Hz (or possibly 75Hz?) refresh rate.

There will probably be a small amount of latency (mouse lag) between your motions and what you see.

I say keep playing CS on your CRT. You could always get the LCD for everything else and just swap it out for the CRT when you play those games.

That's what i had in mind at first. It would be cool to have some type of monitor lazy susan that I could just switch monitors. However everything is moving to LCD, even LANs are almost all on LCDs now. Im looking at the VX9220(?) and the HP W2007. both are about the same price/quality. Also I found out that nvidia will do all my monitor scaling so that's really not an issue anymore.

TN viewing angle limitations on large widescreens dictates that you would see a slight darkening of the panel from top to bottom.

The only color shift free technology is IPS. The DS-265W coming should fit the bill. MVA/PVA only has a slight horizontal color shift, which I believe is less than TN vertical color shift, but can make certain colors like dark greys look slightly silvery with an almost 3d effect.

I doubt you will be able to drive most monitors pat 75hz. If flickering is your concern, LCDs do not have this problem. If highest FPS with VSYNC is your concern, CRT is the only way to currently go. Somebody mentioned that they got 75hz at 1920x1200 with the Doublesight, but this is definitely rare and not supported according to their manual.

If you are concerned about playing 800x600 at 4:3 aspect ratio with black bars on the side, the following monitors should do this without video card aid:

BenQ FP241VW (A-MVA)
Doublesight DS-263N/265W (H-IPS)
Planar PX2611W (H-IPS)
NEC LCD2490WuXi-BK (H-IPS)

For TNs:

BenQ G2400WD
Samsung 2493HM/2693HM

Alternatively, most video cards from ATI and nVidia will do built in scaling with aspect ratio, so it really isn't just something you can get from the monitor, and if you are going to run at such a low resolution, let the video card scale it so that the jaggies will be minimized. Most monitors do not smooth out low resolution (except for the NEC and Samsung in this list). Additionally, using the video card to scale will not increase input lag. I tested the 2493HM at low resolutions and inpu lag rose a small amount, but their scaling engine does a very nice job at smoothing out lower resolutions.

I could also recommend some PVA/MVA monitors (as the BenQ FP241VW is A-MVA) but other than the BenQ I listed, most have enough input lag that may detract from your gaming experience (such as the Dell 2408WFP and Samsung 245T).

Omg you own dude. TY! Ill do some research on these! And yeah, i thought i read somewhere that most LCD's could do 85 hrz but im reading now that 75 is max, which is fine with me. On some (crappy dells) LCDs I can see the flicker, same with CRT's on 60hrz. I guess what I really want is minimal/zero color shift and zero input lag. It looks like the Video card can handle my other concern...

I found the vertical viewing angle distortions to be insignificant on a 226BW{I have a 8 bit panel}.

All LCD monitors have a refresh rate of 60Hz. Even if some say 75Hz it really is 60Hz. LCD monitors do not flicker. It is impossible. CRT's flicker due to the way they work. LCD's work a different way eliminationg flicker.

On some (crappy dells) LCDs I can see the flicker, same with CRT's on 60hrz.

The Flicker you saw could be ether the backlight flickering,
(same as a fluorescent lamp, maybe an electricity problem. backlights are usually constant or extremely high frequency [no flicker])
or a bad analog signal being displayed.

The first flicker is independent of the refreshrate (likely a malfunction), and would still be there even when fed a 240Hz signal.
The 2nd should vanish if fed a digital or clean analog signal, unless the monitor screws up the signal internally.

I found out that it was a power issue in the office. :D either way, I think ill wait for a review on the doublesight where someone tests the brightness homogeneous(ness? lol) to see if its under 10%

If you want to truly be competitive, you need a CRT. No input lag and no response time issues make for zero headaches.

I was wondering the same, if there's a way you can put black bars on the sides. I play CS in a window at 800 by 600 so I guess it's kinda the same thing...
