What are your impressions of the game after playing it for a while?

I just played it for two hours straight, stopped at 14 stars. The game is an absolute marvel, and even amidst a veritable cornucopia of stellar titles being released this year, it still stands head and shoulders above the rest. Even this far in I can already tell it's the best game this year, and I've been told it just keeps getting better right up until the very end. Nothing this year even comes close to topping this, and that's really saying something.

Remember the first time you played Super Mario Bros.? Or the first time you played Super Mario Bros. 3 and World? Remember that first step into 3D with Mario 64, that entirely new dimension of possibilities? Imagine all of those moments wrapped up into one screaming orgasm of fuck-hot awesome. That's Super Mario Galaxy.

I picked up a copy about an hour ago on my lunch. Will check it out tonight after I pickup the kid :D

This game is ridiculously fun so far. Ive got about 8 stars, and its been a blast. Bee mario was quite fantastic.

I gotta pick this up, it's really that good?

I mean i knew it looked awesome and got good reviews, but so did Halo. So i guess it lives up to the hype?

smg is not what i expected.

i thought smg was going to be shit. i totally underestimated this game.

It really is that good. The last time I was this impressed by a game was Christmas of 1996 when I first played Super Mario 64. I was 10 years old and was just getting into gaming hardcore.

I've played some amazing games since then, but none have ever brought me back to the day when I first played Super Mario 64. This game is the first in 11 years to do that.

This game is universal in the same way the original Super Mario Bros. was. It throws all of these amazing scenarios at you, all of these new ideas and mind bending gravity twists, but no matter what you always no where you are and where you should be heading. Anyone can play this and be instantly transported to another time, when things were simpler and games were all about the gameplay, and nothing else.

It's just pure, unadulterated fun. It doesn't get bogged down with a melodramatic story or trite cutscenes. It doesn't attempt to be "H4RDC0RE" or over the top, and it has yet to be repetitive in any way shape or form. Every planet is a fresh, exciting experience offering a stable of new ideas but never to an overwhelming degree.

And yeah, I really can't stand Halo, but that's for another thread :p.

I haven't gotten to play it yet, can't pick my pre-order up until tomorrow or thursday at TRU for $50 - 25GC :D. There's tons of games worthwhile for the Wii, other than this, though ;)... I own plenty :). I CANNOT WAIT to play this... it looks F U N.

P.S. Can't agree more with ManCannon, wtf is up with these people trolling random game-specific threads with their moronic console-war crap that no one gives a flying **** about?

I picked it up this morning, and I am having an absolute blast playing it. I haven't had this much fun with a Mario game since Super Mario 64.

However...

Nothing this year even comes close to topping this, and that's really saying something.

I highly doubt this will be game of the year. Well, maybe if you mean just for the Wii, but I'm betting Mass Effect will completely overshadow Galaxy when it drops next week. Mario does an amazing job at "fun", but Mass Effect should have the depth to go along with it.

just played it for like 2 hours, man I feel 10 again

its MARIO MAN and it brings back so many childhood memories of gaming, nuttin else can touch the plumber

I really wish I wasn't on a business trip right now. I want to be home to play SMG :(

i beat the first galaxy so far and so far it's seems like a good purchase. i wasn't overwhelmed by its awesomeness but it's definitely a mario game and definitely better than sunshine. bee mario was pretty neat and i do like the addition of the wiimote specific levels (manta ray surfing and riding the ball).

Everyone I've talked to said it was really good. Is it worth buying a Wii for?

From what people are saying it is. But if you need more to steer you to purchase one there's mariokart, and super smash on the way. Other great games too, but clearly if you would purchase it for Mario, you should want the others too.

I'm quite excited for Mass Effect, but it's definitely not going to top this game. It'll be a great game I'm sure, and I know I'll love it, but in terms of sheer, balls the wall, feel like a kid again fun, Mario has it beat. Which, for most people, is what gaming is all about.

As far as "depth" goes, I can get an in-depth story and great character development done better in other mediums. As it stands, Mario has more appeal to a wider audience, and has reviewed phenomenally well. I'm willing to bet it will win more Game of the Year awards than Mass Effect, probably by a good margin to boot.

Game of the year for 14 and under perhaps. Nostaglia is great and all, but c'mon. It's still another mario game no matter how good it is. Not everyone wants to feel like they're 10 again playing a game. Do you guys who keep saying that go hang out at Chucky Cheese on friday nights as well?

nah man....DZ is where its at!

In all honesty, since I haven't played it yet, I can't say this with true conviction but aren't all the reviews saying that it's amazing and doesn't harp on nostalgia to do it? Also, I can certainly vouch that personally playing through Mario 64 doesn't make me feel like a kid again; it makes me realize what an amazing game it is to have me play through it so many times (and still enjoy it over ten years after its original release). I'm really hoping that SMG captures that again.

I can respect that, but for me playing Mario 64 again right now would make me realize how much better some modern games are and I'd rather play something different. But thats just it there, a lot of us are different. Pong just sucks to me now. When it first came out it was the most awesome thing ever to many people I'm sure.

But that's what I'm saying: Mario 64 is the best platformer ever. As in, there hasn't been a worthy successor (at least not one I've played or heard of). So while I understand what you mean, M64 is still the soup du jour when talking about platformers.

Just played it for a couple hours with the kid. Its great that he can pick up those star bits and shoot them at enemies (hes four) while I do the heavy lifting. The graphics are amazing! Why cant all Wii games look as good as this? The system is obviously not being tapped for its potential, but then again this was developed by Nintendo first hand (correct?). The game is amazingly polished. I'd recommend this game to any Wii owner.

I'm pretty sure games like Mass Effect have more appeal to the 14 year old crowd. Theyre the ones that like to play the mature games to feel like they fit in with the older crowd, and the ones shoving Nintendo aside because its "too kiddie." I know a lot of people with younger brothers this age, and this is the shared attitude among them. Just because a game has more colors than green and brown doesn't mean we're all going to hang out at chuckie cheese. Jeez, get a grip, have some fun, and stop trying to feel tough while playing video games.

Hmm, you're right. Perhaps he should have said 12 and under. :p

Mass Effect will most likely be a great game, hopefully it will live up to the hype. If so it will set a new high watermark for story and character interaction. Mario Galaxy is a rehash of a tried and true formula, now with wii-mote mini games. While I'm sure Mario Galaxy is fun for platform fans, my time and money will be happily spent on Mass Effect. Platform games didn't cut it for me when I was 14, and they don't 12 years later. I need games with more meat.

Why did ya bring out the feeling tough routine? Feeling tough has nothing to do with what anyone has said. That is unless I struck a nerd vessel of yours somehow and offended you :D

Lol, love how a SMG thread veers away from relevant discussion cuz of two or three thread-crapping 360 fan boys, and now is edging towards the discussion of a game not even in the title.

The reading comprehension is obviously absent here.

Very Very Very Good game im impressed, its definately worth buying a wii for, but on the same note i wouldnt Jizz in my pants and call it the game of the year.

I played it for a few minutes at my friends and I'm definitely going to unload some of the crap games I don't want (super monkey ball ) and get this...

I have only gotten to play about 30 minutes worth and thusfar I must say I am really impressed with it. Its the same "style" of Mario, with such a change and twist in presentation that its extreemly fun.

Would a buy a Wii just for this? No, but then again I would never buy a console or computer for one game.

Looking foward to playing it today :D
Got my Wii yesterday, but no way in hell im pluggin it in with out Component cables... no 480p no SMG for me
Played some Wii Sports tho... Boxing kicks ass

Goddamn, i missed so much on the Wii ... i ll have to replay Zelda, get Elbits and many more

(Im an offtopic whore :p)

I absolutely love it, it feels a lot like mario 64 and the boss battles are really great. The graphics are good while the game is playing, but when it goes to cutscene and you're actually paying attention to them its not exactly amazing. I have to say, though, that the retro music and airships are the best part.

I sold my Wii cause I was tired of the whole "Mario" thing.

If you were tired of the whole 'Mario' thing, and somehow think the only game available for Wii is 'Mario,' wouldn't that make you kind of a dumb person for buying a wii in the first place?

Just got it for $40, with the kmart 20% off deal. But cant play it till Christmas, as the Wii is still new in the box, and a gift for the kids (and me) for Christmas. :(

I played through the first 3 stars last night, I have to say the retro music was great and so far the game is so different than any mario game i have ever played that there is no loss of interest just because "Mario" is in it. So far so good

Now all we need is a new diddy kong racing game, lol

Edit: oh for the record, new super mario bros made me feel like more of a kid than this game. I'm not really kiddish with galaxy, just enjoying the game.

I wish I had Wii to play this game!

I've been playing all the older Marios and I'm really excited for Galaxy, but I need a Wii first and don't know if I can justify it for one game.

I wish they would come out with a new side scrolling Mario. New Super Mario Bros. on DS is awesome and they need to come out with a new on on the Wii.

I picked this up last night, and even though WoW 2.3 came out, I was playing this a bunch instead. The gameplay was smooth, fun, and exciting.

Well i would say keep playing mario, they fucked up 2.3 hunters are way overpowered now with arcane shot, total bs

Between Twilight Princess, Corruption, and Galaxy alone, the Wii is more than worth the price of admission.

SMG is a gorgeous, incredibly fun game. The fact that my girlfriend can get home from school, sit down on the couch next to me, and hop directly into and out of my game while I'm playing it is impressive.

This is probably the single most fun I've had playing a video game since SMW.

When the topic creator states that this game will be game of the year and nothing else will top it, that opens the door to discuss other titles.

Impressions, or reviews, generally express how a person feels about a game. If you're going to sit there and say that you've never used comparisons when talking about how you would rate a game I'm going to have wave the B.S. flag.

Yea its no longer the world of roguelockcraft..

On topic. I will pick this up once my Wii gets back from service.

First impressions-

FUN. This game has brought smiles to my face, and everyone else around here who has seen it. What Mario 64 did for 2-D mario games, SMG does for Mario 64. As others have said, IMO it is the first true progression for the franchise since M64.

That being said, it isn't the longest game in the world. Picked it up on Monday. Played it for a few hours Monday evening, a few hours yesterday, and a few hours this evening (probably ~10 hours total) and I have already beaten it. That being said, I still have 40 some stars to find, so I haven't totally completed the game (have just seen/beat the final boss, and saw the credits roll).

But, to end on a good note- the first time I saw the "spring mario" power-up, I had tears rolling down my cheeks I was belly-laughing so hard! I thought the bee-suit was cool, then I did the spring- funniest/wackiest/most fun power-up I have ever seen in a game! :D

When I had the N64 I was a bit dissapointed on Mario 64, do you think this one is a solid title? I found the M64 a bit sloppy on the control. I used to love Banjo Kazooie, I hear their getting a new one in future.
