Summer farm shutdowns...

It's going to be 100F + this week so I might drop back the OC on the rig a little bit. Maybe then my AC won't kick on early in the morning.

I had to shutdown my rigs for almost a week. I run them out of a utility closest so I don't have to pay for A/C. Anything under 100F ambient I think they can handle.

Feel free to ship CPUs and GPUs to my place. Hehe :D

Everything is included at my apartment. So utilities are never a problem. Our spare room has 2 active portable AC units at 10k and 12k BTUs PLUS Central Air. I'm setting up a rack 'closet' who can basically just run the portable AC year round. Our summertime thermostat is basically the windows. Everything is set at a chilling 64 degrees and when it gets too cold (and it does), we usually just open the windows to warm the place up. :p

I just bought a portable A/C unit from Lowes that is 11,000 BTU and it works wonders. With my 3 dell 30" and my SR-2 and projector, A/V receiever, PS3 and stuff it keeps it all cool. Just gotta plug in my computer to another socket because I keep tripping a breaker with just my computers and monitors and A/C running.

How much is your power bill with those portable units? I think mine is rated at 1000 watts.

I might have to cut back a bit on folding for the time being as well. We're having the biggest heat wave since 1987, and the air conditioning is having trouble keeping up. The good news is that I should have all the parts for my i7 upgrade by the middle of next week, so my PPD hopefully won't take too much of a hit.

Out of curiosity, which portable unit did you get? I have always been told that portable units are less efficient and are also significantly louder than your standard window units that hang out the window. My old 8000btu window unit is not keeping up in my computer room(my folding rig is thus in a storage room downstairs), but i'm' not really able to upgrade as my circuit is already running near the max. Because I have slider windows, getting a casement window/slider window a/c is very expensive compared to ones built for normal windows.

If you plug your computer into another socket, it will likely continue to keep tripping the circuit breaker if that other socket is still located on the same circuit.

I running 2 portables, a 10k btu from costco and 12k btu from Sam's. Both are working SUPER hard with 24/7 operations since springtime. Not a problem at my place. Actually get too cold. :p

They not too loud. Not much more then the fans on my pc, but static noise I tend to tune out so I don't notice much anymore.

I live in a building condo so window units aren't allowed. But all utilities are included so I don't really mind. I had a window unit as well (20k btu from costco) which was much louder then my pc and portables if that helps. It did work great tho til maintenance told us window units weren't allowed. Still, running all 3 AC plus central air and it was like a fridge at our place.

What brand(s) are these units you're running?

I will be back on line with 2 I7 rigs in about 2 weeks. I have one folding windows bigadv right now and waiting on parts for my other I7. Looking forward to contributing to the number 1 team!

Awesome, welcome back!

Just got my utility bill for last month and it shocked the hell out of me...........

$380 and this is a small house. I know that this house isn't designed very efficiently but damn......

there are a few things to help with leaky houses specially with window units. 4'X8' 1/2" styrofoam $12-$15 at lowes or home depot. works great for sealing up a window unit. check weather stripping around doors and windows. with some 3m contact adhesive and a old sheat the same styrofoam can be used to block out hole windows that arent needed. grilling outside instead of cooking in the kitchen helps a lot too.

Jeez Gamer, how old is your house? Mine was built in the early 90's and is ~2600 sq ft and I leave the thermostat @ 76F (is quite cold since our HVAC is top of the line 1 yr old) and I am running a ~5000 btu window unit 24/7 as well..Last month our bill was $197, and that is @ 13.XXX kWh...

I usually hover in the $280 range during a given summer month. That is pretty reasonable considering I keep the window unit in the computer room(folding rigs are in the guest bedroom) on during the day and keep the central a/c thermostat at 76 F.

All of the doors and windows are storm door/windows. I also keep the blinds down during the day to keep the heat out. I have a grill, but havn't fired it up in years as my meals normally go into the microwave. I hate cooking and only cook on the stove when I get tired of eating things that can be cooked in the microwave.

The window unit is upstairs in the computer room, which isn't even hooked up to the central a/c system.

This house was built back in 1945 or 1955. I can't remember anymore. It is a very small house. The central a/c is about 6 years old and is just a basic Trane 10 SEER unit. My window unit is a 18 year old 8000BTU Carrier for Slider windows. I thought about replacing the window unit, but was told that it isn't worth it if it still works as window units havn't increased in efficiency for a long time.

I don't know where you are, but it should be getting better in another month or so. I think the hottest weather is passed for many people. At most you'll be seeing very hot temps until September unless you live in the South.

From what I've seen they may have even decreased. The Kenmore AC we purchased back in the mid-80s was like a cryogenic unit, extremely cold. The recent Hayes we have is quite a bit larger and has a rating several thousand BTU higher yet seems half as cold. AC tech hasn't changed all that much in the past couple of decades from what I've seen.

From my understanding, central a/c system efficiency has dramatically improved in the last decade while window unit technology has stagnated. We now have ultra efficient central a/c systems that can achieve as high as a 21 SEER rating when paired to a furnace with a variable speed fan. A former friend of the family has one of these newer White Westinghouse ultra efficient units and immediately saw a 15-20% drop in their utility bills for the summer over their old 10 SEER unit.

As for window units, that is why I havn't replaced this old Carrier 8000 BTU unit despite the fact that it cannot keep up on hot summer days. If it still works, no reason to upgrade when you arn't going to see any efficiency gains. My understanding is that window units that run off of a 240volt circuit are far more efficient, but I don't know of any window units rated at less than 15-16k BTU's that run on 240 volts.

check to make sure the coils are clean. inside and outside. make sure its resurculating the air and not drawing in fresh air. some have this option some dont. Im using a very old carrier 240v its one of the best window units i have ever had. it was used and free. i have a couple extra's in the barn if you wanna come pick it up. lol

yeah the west coast its been way below avg temps while everyone in the east and south have been suffering..

highest temp we saw here in spokane was 96 degrees and that was only 1 day.. rest of the summer its stayed in the mid to high 80's.. even where my parents live in california they only had 2 days over 100 which is a new record low 6 years in a row now.. they have been averaging mid 80's all summer..

I have a 11K BTU one from Costco. Lowes lists one from De'Longhi (which is what I'm using) and a Danby. Mine is currently cooling a projector, 5 24" Dells, both 360 & PS3 consoles and 5 pc/servers including my file server with 64 2TB drives. Everything is heavy overclocked (cept the FS) and it keeps everything cool.

Well, I turned one core of the 9800GX2 on again. Running at close to 90C, CPU temps jumped by 10C to 70C

Those temps are within normal operational range for both components. I wouldn't worry about it. My GX2 was running over 100 and even throttling up until recently...

It's good to hear that I won't have any parts dying on me soon from heat-related issues :)

I think that the fan of the 9800GX2 is set to keep the card at around 90C while under load. It's not nearly as noisy with one core active as it is with two. My guess is that it spins up a lot more in that case :)

I looked at my GTX-285 and saw that it had been running at about 104C for a few days.

But I reckon if you are stable you do not have a heat problem: No failed units so far.

Fold till you burn out I say. If our northern cousins are slowing down in midsummer, it is up to us southern hemisphere types to dig deep.

Yeah these parts can take more heat than we give them credit for.

You must have a killer overclock. My 285 is maintaining a steady 79C with fan on auto.

My overclocked 285s were running a bit hot too until I manually cranked up the fan a bit. But thats probably because there were 3 i7s and 4 285s all going at the same time in a relatively small room...
