Summer farm shutdowns...

You're joking, right? Don't recall you mentioning it anywhere recently.
sigh...

Of course I'm joking. And I'm fairly sure I've mentioned it before. I don't exactly keep it quiet.

Heh, i'm new around here and even I know you are from Auckland :)

Funny thing is that back when I was still playing a MMO strategy game on facebook, half my clan was from Auckland...........

&8$@! 3 Months damn, must be going on holiday.
For me that would be a job change:D

Wife has to beg me to find a week when we can go on va-ca.

When one works on commission, these things get tricky. I do leave the farm on though.

Got me two air conditioners this year, the new bigger one goes in the living room with the pcs, old faithful goes into my bedroom so I can sleep without sweating all summer :D I accept that my electric bill will approach $200/mo, I've just paid my last one of $140. These 9'-8" ceilings are killing me I think.

Ah~ Spring... days of warm, sunny weather only to get hit by some really cold days when you least expect them. It was around 25C the past few days, then today (Queen's Day here in the Netherlands) it suddenly drops to closer to 15C.

I guess I'll postpone the farm shutdown for a bit :)

If you are new to this, make sure that your electrical circuit can handle the additional load. The reason why I had to put my folding rig in another part of the house is that my computer room gets way too hot, even with the window unit on full blast. On a hot summer day, temps here can reach nearly 90 degrees with that thing running as hard as it can. It is only an 8000 BTU unit, but i'm afraid I cannot upgrade as this circuit will not be able to handle anymore :(

If you are running two window units, chances are that your electrical bill is going to skyrocket closer to $300 as window units have not gotten any more efficient over the years like central air systems have.

Check the breaker and there should be a sticker on your window unit telling you how many amps it uses. sometimes there will be 2 different amp's shown. one is startup (the higher number) and running amps. im gonna take a guess and say 8000 btu window unite uses 8-12 amps. depending what ealse is on the circuit and the size of the breaker. would determine if you could go bigger. generally you can up the breaker size 5 amps without worrying about burning something up. a breaker cost $10-$15 dollars

My office is A/C temp controlled by the school I work at, and they know I run a server farm here, so there will be no shutting down my rigs or anything, room is to stay at a nice cool 70F.
70 seems ridiculously low to keep a room no one is even occupying.

Is this a public school? If so, I as a taxpayer am offended that you're spending taxpayer dollars on your personal project. Even if it's a private school, people are paying tuition to attend, not to fund your personal project.

No offense, I fully support the team here, but every penny spent to power and cool your farm comes out of someone's pocket, if not yours.

This house has extremely old wiring, so i'm not going to take any risks by upping the circuit breaker. I have a good idea of the limits as i've tripped it a few times before in the winter when running the electrical heater. My window unit is an old unit, but replacing it didn't seem to make much sense as I noticed the window units arn't any more efficient today than they were 10 years ago. This is especially true for slider window units that were designed to fit in slider and casement windows.

The thought has crossed my mind whether I should have another circuit wired just to run a much bigger a/c unit off of, but i'm not sure I want to know how much that would cost.

Well thanks for the responses. Last summer I folded with the same setup with just one AC. I typically plan on only turning on the bedroom AC when I absolutely have to. I accept that it will be a bit warmer in here but that's the price I pay to keep folding. I did test out the circuits by having the comps folding, and even had the cpus cranked up (which I do not fold on), and turned both ACs on at once so that startup spike would be a worst case scenario - no problems. I have each rig on its own ups so even if it did trip a breaker no worries about losing work.

I'm switching the whole farm off in about 8 hours time.
I don't trust then to run for 3 months unattended.

Luck ............ :D

well if you want I could house some machines for you? I'd hate for us to be losing 250kppd

I keep my server room A/C set at 74-76F.
It has been turning on more since it is warmer outside but since it is has a Seer 22 rating, it is very efficient. The outside unit is very small and quiet when running since it has two compressors (60%/40%)

I plan to keep running at 100% the entire year.

I live on the other side of the Channel from Tigerbiten, but I doubt my housemate would appreciate it if I were to suck down another 3.5kW :p

In other news, the weather here in the Netherlands has turned from sunny and warm to downright cold and miserable, making for perfect folding conditions :)

Any friends or relitives in the construction business. Its really not much work adding in another line. the hard part is if it has to run through many walls. drywall repair and such. now adding a line in a unfinnished basement is childs play.

Yeah, the basement is unfinished but running electrical stuff down there is a big no-no in our neighborhood. During heavy rains, many of the homes in our neighborhood get flooded basements.

I heard from one of the old neighborhood grandma's who has lived here for a long time that our neighborhood was where they relocated everyone who got displaced when they built Interstate I75 through a part of Cincinnati. They must have rushed our neighborhood because some of the designs are just stupid. My computer room isn't even climate controlled, and the basements flood because they designed it so that all of the water from heavy rainfalls funnels into the garage. The way they designed the drains, they are unable to keep up and then all of that funnelled water comes through the garage and floods the basement.

In a freak flood several years ago, I lost much of my early stuff including my Atari 2600, Atari 5400, 52 games for both systems, my Sega master, Sega Genesis, and some old 486 parts. Everything in the basement as a result is on platforms.......

I feel for you. I had a newly finished basement flood almost before the paint was dry. There must be some kind of freak water supply under my house because my neighbor, who's house sits lower than mine, says his sump pump is bone dry and he has never seen water in it.

It was a terrible experience.

Thankfully for me, quadrupling the capacity of my sump pump system has kept me dry since then. I also have 2x battery backups, with redundant pumps. I also have a small generator that theoretically should let me run one of the pumps in an extended outage. I'm not going through that again.....

well I cant speak for him but when I was working in a public school running F@H it really didnt make much of a difference since the machines were not dedicated (they were still workstations) and they had to be left on 24x7 anyway... sure it was a larger heat-load but the HVAC in the building was overbuilt by 100%

anyway if your that concerned about some computers running F@H i think your head would explode if you knew half the things I knew about the corruption in our school board down here ;):D

Well, my 9800GX2 just hit 100C while folding, so it's shut down now until ambient temps start dropping again, somewhere around September or October. That's about 11k of my ~31k PPD production.

At least it'll be more quiet and cool in my room this way :p

Is it possible that your cards just need a clearning, are do you not air condition your room? Maybe you could manually turn the fan up even higher if it wasn't already running at 100% :)

Ouch. Those GX2s can be hot bitches.....and not in a good way.

you need MOAR

chocolate milk!

I'm wondering about doing a TIM swap on my 260's and whether or not it would make much difference...

I would say try that Elle but swapping TIM on a GX2 would probably be a major PITA especially if it's a 'sandwich' GX2. :D

My garden isn't significant enough to even need to be shut down since other than my laptop, which runs off of an 85W brick, the others are single core processors with unsupported GPUs. They're also right in front of the AC vent in what is usually the coldest part of the house (regardless of season)

Yeah, it's one of 'em sandwiches :D I'm pretty sure it'd be a PITA to clean as well. At best I could blow some air through the cooling fins and see whether that can bring it down from idling at 70C

Idling @ 70c?? I'll second the  That card's got to be in need of some cleaning.

I put the full blame on Tigerbiten who used this card before I got it ;)

Wow, that means that your card has seen a lot of use then! No matter as a little cleaning should make it like new...........

Too bad it is a sandwich card though.....

Well we just had our first few days of 110+ temps, so here comes the $300 power bills. The boxen will keep chugging along though.

I think I'll move my rig to the other side of the desk and it'll be closer to the A/C vent.

Yeah, regular cards are a snap to clean, just take off the cover and use air and brushes to clean the gunk out. I honestly don't even know where to begin with a dual-PCB card :)

My wife was complaining yesterday about how hot and humid it was in our house last evening & night. It was 70F outside... and a bit warmer inside due to the lack of air circulation. She blamed my boxen.

I got to thinking that this is not a good sign for my wallet and how much I will have to run the AC this summer.

you got your windows open?

I wish it was 70f outside.

Here in the STL we're hitting 90 during the day, mid 70s at night, and A/C is already running overtime.

Speaking of which, I have three boxen sitting in the basement, right next to my A/C unit. I wonder if that diminishes the A/C efficiency by heating the intake air.....

Most homes have various intake ducts throughout the house for your home's hvac system. In my house, there is an intake duct in the bedroom and another in the living room. Of course yours might be different.

Yes, my windows were open. Not very breezy yesterday. My wife is always complaining about how hot it is. Meanwhile, I have a sweatshirt on and 7 blankets.
