Street Fighter 4 Thread

46" sony bravia 1080p. i think it's just the way capcom intended it to be. for me, i'm not that impressed with the visuals, especially with some of the stages.

I'm on a 50" Sammy, so i know what you mean. While the game isn't a polygon pushing machine, the over all feel from the art direction, graphics, design, and sound is top notch. I don't think there's modern fighter with such a good mix as SFIV.

As Domingo has pointed out, the "main" complaint is that the figures are outlined. I don't mind. It ads to the swash and swoop of the japanese painting (sumi-e) style; which was intended. I believe that SFIV was a perfet natural progression for the series.

Now if I could go home from work and get some of these jump in + Focus attack + Crumble + MP + Focus Attack + Ultra combos that everyone is sticking :p :)

Excuse my ignorance but is this 'tier' system a table of effectiveness? If so isn't that gonna very subjective to the skills of different fighters or is this supposed to be compiled by an expert with all characters?

I'm using Vega mainly in HD Remix so a bit shocked to see him bottom of the pile in 4, see how it goes I guess.

The ranking comes from testing and recording outcomes between high level Japanese arcade players. Basically every match in the game is rated for a predicted win/loss ratio in a best out of 10. If two expert players of equal skill face off, on average, what will be the outcome ? A rating of 5/10 is a balanced fight. A 6/10 is an advantage for that character and a 4/10 is a disadvantage (only wins 4/10 times on average), Occasionally the handicap drops as low as 3 or goes up to 7.

Sagat is ranked #1, because he has no inherent match up disadvantage against any character, and has an advantage or considerable advantage against most. It's ridiculous, he's a 7 against five characters, a 6 against eight and a 5 against only three characters.

However, the tiers are only really applicable at the expert skill level. If you're a good player, your Vega could probably kick any noob or average player's ass regardless of tier. Also people are more familiar with the tricks and strategies of the top tier characters, so if you have a good game with someone ranked low, you could probably surprise a lot of people.

The console SF4 tiers will likely more around a bit due to the new characters and balancing/tweaks.

Wow this game is great. The animation is so smooth, I imagine it must run at a full 60 fps. The colors seem a little washed out to me though, but it isn't a big deal. I'm playing the xbox version on a 42" Vizio - not the best tv, but it is 1080p.

Funny thing. I played about 20 online games yesterday. Almost all of my opponents were ryu/ken. It is like 1992 all over again.

Man, all this talk of SF4 makes me want to ditch work and pick up a copy and play with those who have the 360 version in this thread. I was one of those old SF2 guys as well. I wasn't good, but I was always trying to get better. XD My dad used to have the SF2 machine at the burger joint my parents ran and my brothers and I would always play it. I was only in like 2nd/3rd grade. Fun times. I can't wait to get this game.

I'd guess it's 60fps. I have no reason to think otherwise.
I find that what's been working for me strategy wise is to stick to the basics. Don't go overboard with the focus attacks every 3 seconds or try to bust out wacky super-links.
The trick is using good 'ol fashioned move pokes, non reckless jumping, and having a steady 2-in-1 special coming after everything.

lol i just left work on lunch to go play at home and one of my friends came over winded up coming late back to work by 30minutes because we were zoned in playing.

i love this game, its so fluid..

HOWEVER me and my friend couldnt really perform any MOVES that required a "charge", we have no idea what that means. best i could figure was you hold the directional in that position for awhile before letting go but it was very Hit Or Miss if i did the move.

For example Chun-Li almost all her moves require a charge.

Like unside down kick = Charge Back then Forward then Kick , also her fireball thing, charge back then forward punch.. How can i Improve on doing the "charge" move, bison has them, blanka has them.. no clue, as of right now we're using the stock wireless 360 controllers because my fight stick hasnt come in. Any tips on how to peform the "charge" moves?

sadly im back at work and i skipped the gym last night to play SF4, so tonight i have to go to the gym but ill be on at some point. :D

oh and i heart ken;)

any move that requires a charge is applied if you're not releasing the back button such as jumping backwards, crouching backwards or just plain back.

it doesn't have to be directly back, so diagonal back is fine, either up or crouching.

this applies for down also

so for example, guile's flash kick, once u get knocked down by an opponent, just hold the down button......once u get up hit up and a kick and you'll perform the flash kick as soon as u get up. timing is still required though.

Picked up the CE at Futureshop this afternoon and I've been doing Time Attacks with Zangief. Just taking a break to install the game, the load times are a little long for me and I've gotta fill up that 320GB with something.

The graphics are excellent and though not mind blowing, they're what I expected them to be. Clean and crisp, they must be running at a steady 60fps.

Right on, full install took less than 10 minutes. That's good compared to some of the ridiculous wait times on installs with the PS3.

Anyone sick of the main theme music yet? Good God damn...:(

sorry i meant chun-li's kick is Charge down - then up - then kick.

i dont get it though its very hit or miss like 50% of the time.

I press down hold it , then press up then kick.

Em I not releasing it correct, whats the timing? Does "charge" just mean hold?

Yup the main music theme is the gayest crap ever, my only complain, makes me feel homo.

I'm not really a fan of the theme music...or the menus either. I'm still a little surprised how long the load times were with no install. Installation literally reduces them by 75%.

I enjoy the music, the singing is a bit high pitched for me; though it has grown on me. Also, I can agree with you on the menu layout. It's very sparce and I was thinking there'd be something more "Bold". Maybe menus that span the entire screen with intersting typograpy or stylizations; unlike the left aligned tiny text we have now. But hey, I'm not playing the menus screen, so...:p

From vids I've watched, it seems the US voices are horrible, once again. I would love it if Capcom would start allowing Japan-region voice packs as DLC, if they aren't going to do it as a free option. Maybe by the time the PC version comes out, someone will hack the Japanese vocals back in.

Edit: For comparison... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8_y3T58ro0

Thankfully you can change the voices to Japanese. Once you beat arcade mode it unlocks this feature.

That's fantastic. Capcom just got themselves a sale, as they are rightly allowing this option to persist for free. Is this on both the PS3 and 360 versions?

I've been reading some differing ways of unlocking Akuma and Gouken. Has anyone gotten both of these characters that knows exactly how to do it?

I just unlocked Akuma. I first unlocked all the characters except Akuma, Gouken, and Seth before even attempting this. My notion going into the run was to get at least 1 perfect and not use any continues. I ended up getting more than 1 perfect (not sure how many exactly but maybe 3) and did not use any continues. After beating Seth, Akuma challenged me and I beat him and he was unlocked. I've yet to get Gouken and Seth yet though.

The horrible xbox360 dpad ruins this game for me. I can't get any move out consistently, especially in a combo. Those double hadoken motions are killer, and the accidental jumping doesn't help either. I also wished the top triggers were buttons and not triggers. Does anyone know of a 3rd party controller that has better buttons and dpad?

You're pretty much limited to the SF4 fightpads but Mad Catz. PS3 users have the option of the usb Saturn controller as well as the fightpad.

Ahh beat the game twice today! My thumbs are already super sore from being wa out of practice :) Too bad I saved the data on my roommates ps3 and not mine.

After trying these combos i'm going to have to pick up an arcade stick. I'm trying to decide between the Hori ex2 for $50, or the Hori Real Arcade Pro for $130.

You have to hold back/down for two seconds before holding forward/up + punch/kick. The trick with charge characters is to always hold diagonally back down so you are effectively charging both your horizontal and vertical attacks at the same time to pull off whenever you need them, this is why you'll see alot of Guile players for example crouching alot as they can flash kick you if you go high or sonic boom you if you fireball them.

ok wow nice im gonna have to try that when i go home for lunch, thanks man. :D

beat arcade for the first time last night on medium with ryu lol i need to get more time to play!

The first character I unlocked was Rose and she is awesome. Her ShamWOW (Germans Always Make Good Stuff) attacks are pretty sweet and her move set stacks up well against everyone I've played online so far. I'm using the Hori SCIV stick and it works well with the game. I'll probably pickup the TE stick to use at some point. I think the controls in this game are much more forgiving then SSF2HD.

I'm always up for a game, so hit me up on the screen name BPMURR on LIVE.

If you want to be good at this and play at any real level, get a stick, trust me.

One of the weirdest things you can do in this game is throw someone the absolute instant they stand up after being knocked down. That's never been an option in SF before, so that's one reason anyone with a command throw is so damned strong. Zangief, Abel, Honda, Seth, etc. can all do their command throw as you're getting up and if you don't have a counter attack coming out - you're getting tossed. I've always liked the grappling characters, but in some ways I think that's a little lame. Zangief is godlike. You can pretty much just keep doing 360's any time someone is close and win. Unless someone's timing is flawless, you can get jacked up but take 50% of their life with his revenge super.

I'll hope that once I unlock Seth that players can't do that teleport into the piledriver nonsense!

I finally played a little bit online last night. I played some random "fun" matches and a few invites with Sixth. Lag isn't too bad at all as long as you have orange bars. I even played some red bar matches and it's 2x better than Tekken is on the same latency.

When using the xbox controller, I prefer using the analog stick for both HDR and SF4. I can pull constant dragon punches over and over using the analog stick. It is much better than the dpad. That said, I have a Hori EX2 and a SF4 SE stick. I used the controller a good bit before I got the SF4 stick though. My big problem with the controller are the buttons.

Yeah, if you're playing on the 360 I recommend using the analog stick, too. I got to be pretty damned good using the stick in Hyper Fighting. The D-Pad not only sucks, but it's placement can make the 2 left top triggers a pain to hit comfortably, too.

You guys need a new hobby!:p

Let's not thread-crap please!!

Does anyone have personal experience with the HRAP3 on here. I cannot stand to wait until April to pick up the TE stick. But the lower profile and wider layout is nice. I was thinking about picking up the HRAP3 and putting some Sanwa buttons in...but the TE seems almost too good to be true. Thoughts?

The music IS pretty horrible. I'm pretty sure a gay person would be insulted by it, too :)
