Street Fighter 4 Thread

I have my saying as "Legendary Loser." I figure with all of the serious people out there, I might as well have some fun with it.

Last night Adonay absolutely jacked me. Not sure if I was executing poorly or if he was just better or what - but I dropped 10 of 18 to him. I don't think I've lost more than I've won to anyone in quite some time. I'm definitely much better at HD remix, but I'm at least pretty good at SF4. Adonay's Gen is something to be feared :)

man i really need some tips for this game.... i have problem pulling off big moves.

Play through the character in challenge mode, its definitely the best way in SFIV to learn character moves, but it can be frustrating was you get into the combos. It improved my playing about 1000% since i havent played SF in about 15 years.

At the risk of sounding redundant, I will say it again, get a quality joystick if you're not using one. SF2 was designed for joystick and 6 buttons, it plays best that way. Also, I was having a hard time adjusting to the way links are performed in this game, and they are critical for high level play. What helped me was doing trials. I know SF, so the regular trials were nothing. The hard trials are where your execution is tested, and is good for getting your muscle memory going. I would go to a video of the trials on Youtube (they really need examples with timing, like Tekken training mode). Then I watch the video as a timing reference. Also, it was discovered on shoryuken.com that the light pulse on the opponents' life meter are timing indicators and can be used to assist in link timing. I used this, and played Arcade with 'net interrupt on. I got interrupted like 7 or 8 times, played at least 20 matches, and dropped 0. I went to all the characters I am familiar with (Sak, Gief, Cammy, Rose, Gouken, Akuma, Ryu). The links kept me from getting thrown and helped my zoning and spacing. I am getting used to the FADC in combo now. I only really like it with Cammy, but it's very useful. My game has upped tremendously in little time. The real test is tomorrow night at the UMBC game room. There are the area's best SRK players(the Gamestop winners headbands were everywhere, lol). These are the guys who preordered all the TE sticks and play hardcore. If you're in the Baltimore area, you should come they, had 4 or 5 tv's going at once last week. There was also, KOF, GG and 3S going on. I got 0 wins last week, I will be changing that tomorrow *shakes fist*

i'm still looking for [H]ocpers to add me to their xbox for some scrimmages :)

xbox 360 = chinox22x

I've played you - you're better than that :) You must be just choosing your non-primary characters for ranked match...or that's just your overall record. I'm not even sure what my player record even is just because I play Dan so much.

What's the best character icon everyone has? The last one I got was the "golden CD" that says SF4 on it.

For sayings, the last one I got says "My Way" although I have all of the various, jack, ace, queen, etc. ones.

Thanks, I get better by playing good players like yourself. Its my overall record but most of my losses were from the first day i got the game. Only had this game for 4 days and about 15 hours into it. Cant play as much as I want because my GF lives with me and bitches. So when you see me leave our match suddenly, you know why. lol

Right now im trying to learn Sagat and most of my wins are with him online. Trying to master the EX cancel combo's and learning how to fight against different charactors.

Maybe it's time to EX cancel the gf :p (no Chris Brown)

Nah, no big deal. Sometimes the PSN just drops games, too. You're definitely a good player - especially Sagat. Plus, with him being so strong, he's obviously a good character to pick up.
I think I've honestly put too much time into Zangief and I think I'm going to start sticking to the other characters unless I'm getting jacked. I can win with him and usually Honda or Bison, but I have a pretty hefty drop off after them. My Abel is getting a little better, though.

I think the main things I have to get used to are the game fundamentals. Like TripleAgent mentions, the cross-ups, meaty/early attacks, and even things like throws are different than in the other SF games. I honestly think I lose about 1/2 my life in every match throwing out attacks at people who are rising. In other games that's perfectly valid, but in SF4 that'll get you killed. I've gotten to the point that I just do those out of habit.

guile is still my favorite...zangief players give me the most fits...I always forget to dash away from them when they get close.

Man all those abbreviation gives me headaches...

i found 2 good videos for Noob like me... i will post them later

I've learned that the game is shockingly forgiving when people jump away from Zangief's super. Unless you're in the middle of a move, you can jump away from either his super or ultra after the game initiates the "blue flash."
It's why I tend to use his super bar for the EX banishing flat and I'll only go for an ultra after I land a low MK. They can still hop out of it with perfect timing, but it's at least 50/50.

I actually find that tic throws are pretty weak in SF4. Throws have almost no range at all this time around any quick attacks pretty much nullify anyone trying to throw. Even worse, the "jabber" can just link into a special move and make life hell for the thrower. Definitely better than the SF2 games where tics with the right timing were insanely hard to stop.
However, Zangief's a pretty clear exception. His tics are actually far worse in this one.

The main thing about throws in SF4 is that someone can be tossed the instant they stand up. That leads to a mix up for both the attacker (throw or attack?) and the person getting up (counter attack?).

Some characters pretty much have to throw more than others to keep someone from just camping out. I find all of the "human projectile" characters like Bison and Honda pretty much have to throw to keep someone from turtling all day.

Some guy sent me a message saying I spammed throws too much. It's not my fault he kept falling for the bait and wanting to shoryuken for no reason hoping I'll jump into it. Also, I don't get why it's so dirty to throw while someone is blocking, it's in the game and the game isn't preventing me from doing it so.....

I don't get this game, I know all of the moves for the character I'm using (Akuma), but I can't come close to beating the game on medium. The computer does the moves so fast it's insane! Oh and Akuma happens to be the one guy I can't do his Ultra, doesn't make any sense. I know the functionality fairly well, throws, the charge attack, ect. I don't understand the canceling though, or what it does for you? Also I don't understand how people do moves so quickly, while doing other moves, it's insane. Is it because of my Xbox 360 controller? The joystick I feel like just doesn't allow me to work that quickly. I don't know i've been playing for a week and I still feel like I still have the same understanding and can't get better. Does anyone have some tips?

If anyone on PS3 wants to fight me, add "tizzao". I haven't played street fighter since alpha 3, but I'm not doing to bad. I need someone to kick me around a bit so I can re-learn the game.

Quite the opposite experience here, once I started playing against user's in the 2000bp range. Thats all they do, throw, turtle fireball fest . I've played against some excellent players, but when someone plays to win then it's a different story.

Okay i've read through most of the thread, and here are the specific questions I have:

What moves chain together, how do I learn combo's now that I know a character's specials and moves?

How do I cancel a move and what does it do for me?

How do I do akuma's ultimate to function? It seems like a series, but I can't get it to work

I'm fairly new to SF in general, so any tips are appreciated.

Sadly, the game pretty much forces you to turtle a lot to win. Now you can essentially take 1/3 of someone's life and they now "earned" an ultra combo that can take 1/2 of yours right back. Knock someone down? Short of throwing them - you really have no other options. Their ultra will beat every single normal attack in the game because they all have invincible frames as the opener. Ditto for 75% of the uppercut characters. Playing to win in SF4 is painful.
I refuse to be one of those campy sorts, but if I ever felt I had to win, I'd hit someone a few times and crouch in the corner. Block damage is so small and I can beat most throws on reaction...so there's not much else for someone to do.

I'm starting to miss HD Remix a lot. I'm getting annoyed with the "knock someone down and wait" game.

Go into challenges>trials and play thru them with whatever character you want. It shows you simple through to EX cancel combos.

How do I cancel a move and what does it do for me?

IIRC (I don't cancel very often) you hit both mediums just as you pull of a special. So for eg, Akuma jumps in with HK, the HP, H dragon punch - as soon as you do the dragon punch movement hit both mediums and the dragon punch will cancel after one hit for you to follow up with another move like a fireball or another HP, H dragon punch. It basically cancels the end of one combo (instead of knocking them to the floor) to let you start another straight away so a two for one if you will.

How do I do akuma's ultimate to function? It seems like a series, but I can't get it to work

Ultra raging demon = light punch, light punch, back, light kick, hard punch

Super raging demon = light punch, light punch, forward, light kick, hard punch

With Akuma's super and ultra, you just hit the buttons in that order really quick. Once you get used to doing it, you'll learn that you can do it while another move is animating, while blocking, etc. to use it as a counter attack or even a near-combo. People can jump out of both of them, but they're quick.
Akuma's annoying. He takes a lot of damage, but he has a hell of a lot of good weapons to make up for it.

I agree to an extent. High level play will probably devolve, but there are options. The "knock someone down and wait" game is where I usually do crossups anyway, so I can still do this for the most part. I actually finally played some ranked games last night went like 4-2 or 4-3. The laggy crap games sucked. I started with Sak, as I just like her, but without her dive kick and godly j. MK crossup, it was really hard to get damage in, and jumping in is just dangerous to get thrown and spaced. I switched to Zangief and never lost, he's too beastly, lol. I even got EX hand vs wakeup Ryu Ultra and won, too good. When the Championship Patch comes out, I think it will reach it's true potential. I do prefer MVC2 and HDR to SF4, but it is so refreshing to play something new that will spur tournaments, at least temporarily, it's been so dead in my region for a long time.

I just hate that I can't throw out a perfectly timed normal attack on someone getting up any longer. Hell, I had Sagat do a normal uppercut as a wake up while I was in the middle of an EX Honda 100 hands. In the old days - that's a 1 in a million success chance. Now you have roughly a full second to input the motion and it's a guaranteed success. Ditto with anyone who is part of the "all you can posse."
In the old games I could pretty much announce to anyone watching - "this guy is going to keep trying to uppercut and I'm going to keep sweeping him over and over" and it would always work. It's tough to just throw out something that worked for 18 years :) Ken scrubs can now pretty much use the old theory of uppercutting everything and it sadly works pretty well.

I also still hate the Ultra system. It just seems like a needless reward for people who are getting hit.

It just feels like there are too many favors being given to people just for the sake of keeping things interesting. Reminds me of Mario Kart in a way.

What was the old turbo code on the SNES? Up, R, Down, L, Left, Right, B, A? There really should be a turbo mode in SFIV.

Beating Ken/Ryu/Sagat/Akuma/Gouken with Dan online is still very, very satisfying. Make sure to taunt a number of times as well.

Hey Domingo gg's last night. I was drunk as hell playing you and I screwed around alot, then started to get serious at the end. Then had to immedialty shut off the PS3 (Damn GF), didnt even get a chance to read your message, I just remember seeing "Grr" lol.

Heres my thoughts on the game so far. This game has an excellent balance between the Street fighter 2 Series and Street Fighter EX3. I was a very good SF EX3 player from 5 years ago and alot of the mechanics are implemented in SF4. Its all about adapting, countering, well executed timing, blocking, knowing your combos and making good calculated attacks. Just like in EX3, there are so much more mistakes a player can make compared to the older SF series. Once you make that mistake, you can get punished HARD with long combos followed by deadly Supers and Ultras. In this game you must be smart. You cant just be aggressive all the time or youll get countered. You cant just sit there and block or youll get thrown. Basically, you just got to adapt to peoples playing style and learn how to counter against all charactors in the game.

So what you're saying is it's a fighting game and you have to fight to win? :D Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what you're getting at...

</extreme_sarcasm_developed_over_decades_of_time> ;)

Can't wait to actually play this damned game soon, just waiting on a "new" refurb replacement Xbox 360... maybe I'll get lucky and Microsoft will take pity on me and toss me a Jasper...

Bleh, I'm dreaming, of course. I'd have a better chance of a Genie appearing and turning me into a game character so I could get something goin' on with Chun-Li, Rose, Cammy, and C.Viper...

I was just whining about the overpowered wake-ups. I'm still of the belief that when I throw out a normal attack to someone rising that they shouldn't be able to just uppercut or super out of it. In every other SF game, a meaty attack = 90% safe. I'm just not too fond of the invincibility frames off of rising attacks off the ground. Unfortunately the SF4 creators disagree with me :)
Short of Zangief, I'm just a little irked that the game seems to have taken my style and flushed it a little bit. Poor Vega is crippled and Why in the world can't Honda's EX and super headbutts not be used against projectiles?

Thats one of SF EX3's features I believe. It prevents people from trapping u in a corner or easily pulling off unblockable supermoves on you after they knock you down. You can use this to your advatage by jumping next to them as they are getting up and just block, then counter.

Last night you threw me around like a rag doll everytime I got closed to you. That instant reaction to that throw button is what I need to get down so i can either throw or coutner the throw. I also have trouble with your Blanka.. so I need to get that down as well. Playing against better players really teach me alot.

Throws are something I just started using a lot a couple of days ago. Too often I'd find those uppercut fiends beating out my combo starters with another immediate uppercut so I'd start throwing them. Then I realized that it's also a pretty good way to get people out of that low shell. For the first week I really only used the spinning piledriver and Abel's throws.
It's taken some getting used to (I'm used to forward + medium or fierce) but I've grown pretty used to it. With Blanka it's flat out essential...although his EX roll going through fireballs makes him scary good.

I wish we could all play against each other...I'm getting a TE or custom stick and will have it wired fo both systems, but I can't buy a PS3, I know I will kick myself...

The PS3 isn't too bad. I looked the other day and I have almost as many PS3 games as 360 games now. I prefer the 360 overall, but the PS3 has gotten better. Too bad the PSN is still a bit of a joke.

The majority of SF4 players are on XboxLive, so thats could be something you can look into.
Im thinking about buying an Xbox360 again and the Madcatz gamepad. Then again, I dont really have that much time to play as I like and I may hate the Madcatz. I definetly HATE the 360's controller for fighting games.
