Street Fighter 4 Thread

Shoryuken.com is definitely a good resource. Stupid work filters blocking most things "gaming" related :p
The Prima guide is pretty nice, though. It's not the greatest thing ever, but it's a lot better than most fighting game guides.

I've been practicing with Ken the most, not because most people use him just when me and my brother first got SF2 for the snes he was always Ryu and I was Ken but back to the point does the guide have more info on the moves vs what the pop-up screen that shows your move list in-game?

It covers all the needed info to deal with and understand the game and everything associated with it. While it might not compete (no pun intended) with the level of information provided by firsthand fighters and game players that you can find at Shoryuken's forums, in terms of a single tome of info, it's unbeatable to have laying around when you just need a quick bit of info... no Internet access required. :)

It's not a replacement for people's tips and strategy info you can find online, but again, for those just getting into SFIV, it really can't be topped as a single resource for specific info about that game.

^ Joe pretty much hit the nail on the head. It's nice to have everything all together and it does give a nice explanation for some general uses for each of the character special moves.
I miss some of the old school GameFan guides that seem to have been written by nothing but high level players, but this one's still better than expected.

Ken's a solid character and he does have a lot of room for error. Even if you're not executing well, his uppercuts still hurt a lot, his supers have really good priority, and his hurricane is really damaging if you land all of the hits. The main issue with him is that EVERYONE plays him and a good chunk of players online are used to having to fight him nearly every match. My motto with Ken (in general) is just to play defensively. Give a Ken player enough time and he'll eventually start leaving himself wide open with missed uppercuts :)

Yeah I guess I like Ken for nostalgic reasons, but I played with Fei Long last night and I was whooping some ass. I think I actually may play better with him than Ken over time. I also noticed his Ultra has crazy long rang, I was pulling it off last night and my opponents were a good 5 inches away from me. Is he a good player to invest time in?

Fei Long's good for sure. The keys to getting good with him are mastering his "chicken wing" (the one where he has arcs through the air with a flip kick) and getting use to the range of his 3-punch combo. Since he's a pressure character, don't be afraid to go for the throw to keep people guessing. His super is definitely a good one. Big damage and lots of range. I don't even set up up well and it still lands most of the time.
I'm no expert, but his learning curve is probably lower than someone like Chun Li or Abel.
I tend to favor the big/slow characters with the heavy damage or the speedy finesse characters like Bison and Vega.

I need a stick, seriously debating just making a custom if it's going to take this long to get the TE stick without being raped on price.

Make it yourself. You'll have a lot more fun doing it and then enjoying the fruits of your labor, especially when you kick someone's ass with it. :D

I'd build my own stick if I have the time. But I don't sadly. I'll just stick with the TE stick, hope it arrives soon (my store said March o_o)

Oh and BTW: Crimson Viper FTW

Oh and BTW: Crimson Viper FTW

I concur. I'm getting CV down and she just has so many options and combos from range and close up its almost silly, still haven't played online yet though as I don't think I'm as good as all these young wipper snappers nowadays.

I keep seeing that about Crimson Viper in a lot of places... yes, even at Shoryuken but I'm just a lurker over there, never bothered to register. ;)

If I had the money to blow I'd go get an Arcade Xbox 360 and the game and see what all the fuss is about but, 1st of the month is Monday (in terms of bills, technical date is Sunday of course) so... perhaps if the gaming gods are in a good mood I'll get a crack at it soon. I could go sit at Fry's and kick people's asses all evening though... hrmmm :D

Someone add me, i need some competition. Right now only at 800 points.

PSN: ViolentDrunk

This game is awesome, just got it the other day... missed out on preorders due to being in europe...

Snice I posted my rant about chun-li... I have gotten a lot better learning more of her combos on my own. I am going start studying and getting in deeper with her. I can get to the point where I can tell if someone is actually good and been playing a while and people that suck... I trash them so bad now. I think Chun-Li may be a little underrated.. I have ran into 1 other playing her and smashed the persons face. I made some kid rage quit playing Gen and another guy that had about 800 BP points get a little mad when he was playing akuma and got ravashed in a 2-0 victory. I am finding she is kinda powerful and I just need to learn to time and block better. She is diff not the S3s Chun-Li that is for sure.

BTW EFF Akuma's ultra and someone that actually knows how to use ken =( I think I am gonna learn Cammy or Sagat next. M.Bison is my secondary cause he is pretty much just like Chun-Li but with a wee more power.

The parts are coming in for my hori soon can't wait to get that modded. PICS to come =D

Ah, the dream of so many SF players since that fateful day when SF2 first appeared... DOH!!! Did I say that out loud??!?! :D

HEY... it's not just my fantasy dammit... <hint, hint> Don't even try to deny it either... you're all busted!!! ;)

Sorry, it's late, I'm bored, couldn't let that one pass, just couldn't.

Dude those legs man.... wrapped around my face while... oh. Shit.. I was thinking out loud.

I do remember my friends brother used to do her spinning bird kick on purpose just to see her panties in SF2:Turbo for SNES.

I still can't get used to Chun Li in this one. I'm still okay with her, but her jumping angle and aerial moves are just too different from what I'm used to. That new d/f+ HK is pretty nice, though! I've won matches against clearly better players just by mixing that in with real jumps. Plus, you can link that move into the rapid kicks and then into the super!
Not my favorite character, but I can still see that she isn't bad.
I still haven't seen any good Viper personally, but I know they're out there.
Lots of people seem to want to pit Sakura against Zangief. FYI - don't!

I'm diggin' Gouken, esp. his "alley-oop" throw into a hurricane kick or shin-shoryuken.

However, after getting all the characters up to Gouken I had to stop playing arcade mode. I've been playing the SF series since the original came out in the arcades (almost 30 yrs old (!!)) and Seth is THE WORST final boss in the series.

I was playing as Gouken on medium and did fine until beating Seth's second form. In the third round he did his little color change suction move that I dodged by jumping behind him. By that point my super gauge was full and tried to unleash a super combo. Keep in mind Seth was still doin' the suction thing...
So when I executed the super combo from behind none of the initial hits connected and I was directly next to him. He proceeded to pummel me with his EX-shoryuken.

A little while later he managed to preempt my ultra move with his piledriver.

This game gets 10s on everything except the boss, who is way overpowered. I love the rest of the game, but the final boss takes much of the fun out of the arcade mode.

This is the unending scourge of gaming: the boss character that's just too tough... on a game that's been out, what, a week? :D

I laugh about it because I know in the weeks and months to come your playing will improve and you'll figure out Seth's patterns and what to do, and even more importantly what not to do and soon you'll be posting "Oh man, I can't believe that character, it's such a pussy... can't believe I thought he was tough at one time..." hehehe

COME ON... you know it's true... ;)

Man this game is freakin hard. I keep getting my ass beat all over the place in ranked games.

I haven't been playing ranked matches but have started getting in on the nuances of the game. Learning to mix in focus cancels, focus as parries and baits, using EX moves to save from falling in a fireball etc Gouki/Akuma is probably my fav overpowered character. His 9 hit reg combo is brutal and then having the ultra is scary for anyone trying to come in close. Zangief's priority on his spinning piledriver is insane and his range with his fist, he's slow but can cover med distance easily.

I just went on an 8 game win streak mostly scrubs, but I beat a few decent players including a 2-0 shut out on a 2000bp Sakura. Haven't lost yet, quit for a smoke break. Playing better than usual tonight. ;)

If anyone is up for a game against a mean green Brazilian killing machine, my PSN is 'Apriliaphile'

I love this game. It took the parry system from SF3 and improved upon it by a mile, the graphics are great, the control is tight, and the depth is amazing.

I finally picked up a MadCatz SFIV game pad (I grew up playing SFII on my genesis and suck on the arcade sticks). The pad is very nice and anyone thinking about getting one should definitely try. I had to visit over 12 stores before I finally found one, but the pad is superior to the 360 in almost every way (I don't like jumping with the new pad if you can believe it).

Not what I meant... but... ya... busted the lot of us lol.

I picked up one those gamepads for the hell of and I like them... Those things a really nice and well made I was surprised.Still use my Hori EX2 and waiting on lizardlick to fulfill my order my joystick is a pain. I was having a bad just after work and coming home tired to play some SF4 is not a good thing. I couldn't win at anything. I come back later that night and went on a 10 win victory streak with my lady =D So in a span of 2 hours... I went form 0 BP to breaking almost 900 and ending at 800ish I can say I am getting a lot better. I can't wait to keep talking the mad shit I do at work and play these kids that think they are good lol.

BTW akuma is still bullshit but getting better at beating people playing... And I am starting to think I am the only Chun-Li that plays online.

I've now been privy to Akuma's nonsense. Both of his supers pretty much grab out of anything short of a projectile. You can't use any normal attacks to beat 'em, and if he times anything like a jump in - you're losing half your life. Because he takes damage so heavily, I find myself hitting him a couple of times and running like hell. Since most Akumas want to run away from you anyway, it's always fun to give him his own medicine. Still, when Akuma has either super ready to go - look out.

I've completely given up on attacking people as they're getting up now. The whole concept of "meaty" attacks is worthless in this game just because almost every single super in the game has invincibility frames. Stuff that would humiliate Ken over and over in the old games now gives him a free super. Now I pretty much find myself camping in front of someone or always going for cross-ups on downed opponents. Anything else and you're going to get super'd. Not sure I like that I can perfectly time an attack on someone getting up and having their ultra (which rewards them for getting beat up) will ALWAYS beat it.

I need to get back to playing, but I am stuck with my season on NHL 09 on my xbox 360.

I started doing a lot more poke moves and doing my df.hk a lot to trick people. I am mixing up a lot of things. When I get my joystick modded I'll be able to do that over the top magically beast of a kick you do with a backwards half circle and kick. It's kinda hard to pull off at times with no real feedback where I am in my move. I the game is about doing the most moves as you can and throwing an Ultra when its really effing safe. I gotten to where I barely use an Ultra now and love pulling it on the Akuma kids when they try to do theirs. Only people I still worry about are the Kens cause alot of my moves are kinda airborn that that upward uppercut of his is scary >< I haven't had any ragequiters but I am sure people are liking losing to a mid teir with their high/top guys.

Man this game is freakin hard. I keep getting my ass beat all over the place in ranked games.

It was like that for me for awhile man. Keep at it, learn timing and learn to be the gayest possible move player ever and you will win more and more. It's not about Ultra Combos or about 30505 hit combos. It's about doing set based attacks that may be little jabs or a sweep kick into a < MK d.MK ^MK and timing it to an Full EX into a stun and getting a free what ever the hell you fell like doing with Chun-li. Best thing to do is do the challenge mods OVER OVER OVER OVER AND OVER! Till you get the moves down where you can pull them off at whim. Also get a friend that play with and get where you go 20x in a row, win and listen to the QQ about the joystick not working etc etc. And then just pretend thats the person on the other side.

Yeah, Akuma can be a real pain. He will test your patience, but Zangief still rapes him if you don't fall for combos.

And your other point is the reason I was not liking the move to 3D models...meatys, crossups, ticks and throws are just plain different. I adapted fairly quickly, but it doesn't feel like SF to me sometimes, but as a Zangief fan, the insane throws almost make up for it lol.

I haven't been playing raked matches but I may start. I want quarter matches much more. And the join a match, no network indincator crap is unacceptable. Besides that, loving it!

On the PSN I'm still 28-1 in ranked matches, but they're just a pain in the butt. They're only for one game and then you have to hunt for someone else to play. It also doesn't really offer anyone a chance to adjust to anything. You just go after one another and try all of your "tricks" with the hope the other person has no answer for them or hasn't seen them before.
Pretty much every match is Sagat or Ken and the few people brave enough to use someone else either have like 7000 battle points or less than 100.
The only reason I ever played ranked in the first place was to get some more icons, but it seems like you just get those over time playing either ranked or player matches.
With player matches at least there's time to play around and use different characters/make adjustments. With ranked, if someone's using a certain timing with a move, by the time you pick that up it might be too late. Especially with those damned ultra moves taking off 40% of your health.
More often than not I find myself attacking until someone gets an ultra and then I'm forced to back off because they pretty much have a move that can beat anything I do. Luckily, as always - give an uppercut character enough time and they'll find a way to beat themselves by doing them at the wrong time.

I have improved so far. 1880 battle points 120 wins 70 losses.

I've played you - you're better than that :) You must be just choosing your non-primary characters for ranked match...or that's just your overall record. I'm not even sure what my player record even is just because I play Dan so much.

What's the best character icon everyone has? The last one I got was the "golden CD" that says SF4 on it.

For sayings, the last one I got says "My Way" although I have all of the various, jack, ace, queen, etc. ones.

Not the best but I have the chinck with all the garb on and the saying 'Knowledge is power'.

Might change the saying to 'I'll try my best' :D
