Steam Controller Revealed

Based on the design of the controller... can you imagine how ugly the Steam Box is going to be.

I think it looks pretty awesome. Natural input. Backwards compatible and emulating mouse/key combos so I can finally invert x-axis for ALL my 3rd person games. Will buy day 1.

I'm wondering if this console will see a second version in a few years. Lord knows it will stop at Steam 2.

I'm officially an AMD fan-boy... I thought the title was Steam Roller Revealed and I rushed to see what was going on. The link to the picture of the controller was a confusing let down Hahahaha

"yawn" Not for me. Looks like valve is trying to attract the masses.
Me thinks users of this would get schooled in multi vs mouse keyboard users

If all you ever play are hyper-competitive twitch shooters, then, no, this isn't for you. If you, on occasion, play something else, you might enjoy a good controller.

You mean like a wireless 360 controller?

I am trying to reserve judgement till I get some hands on, but I am just not seeing this as being an improvement over the current PS3 or 360 controllers. Valve definitely has an uphill road with this controller.

That's how you build marketshare. Console players obviously make up the bulk of gaming marketshare (look no further than GTA5 sales), so Valve isn't trying to convert the already converted (PC players) - they're looking to apply the Android effect to the currently vertically oriented and closed console market.

As I was telling my console friend- "the Steambox is, among other things, a console that will play mods. Meaning you could move past your feelings of incredible emptiness when seeing the Skyrim mods at my house and realizing your xbox can't play them."

I was thinking the same thing. I see no reason to replace my wired XB360 controller connected to my PC for that thing.

Valve invites several developers to test out the Steam Controller:

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/...the_Steam_Controller_Heres_what_they_said.php

Chris Remo, designer and writer at The Cave developer Double Fine had a hands-on of the Steam Controller at the San Francisco studio. Remo played a couple different games: Double Fine's upcoming point-and-click adventure game Broken Age and the already-released platform-adventure game The Cave. "We just plugged it in, and it worked," he said. "We didn't have special support for it or anything. It worked really, really well. I was really impressed with the mouse imitation. It doesn't feel like a trackpad."

Remo said the controller has a tiny speaker in it that offers audio feedback – a subtle "tick" sound that increases and decreases in speed (he compared it to the Wheel of Fortune wheel's sound), depending on how you use the track pad. If you "fling" your thumb across the trackpad – if it's mapped to the mouse – the ticking increases in speed, and slows down as the virtual momentum of your action slows. "It sounds like there's actually a mechanical device in there, which really makes it feel mechanical, but not in a clunky way," Remo said. "It just feels really high-tech and precise. … I can't stand trackpads on laptops, and this felt really good to me. There was almost no learning curve as far as accuracy goes."

"It feels like you're moving your thumbs over a rough surface, though it's all virtual," Ichiro Lambe said. "From a tech standpoint, think about something that can click whenever you tell it to... Simple example: you move your finger 1 inch up, and it ticks 10 times...You flick it up, and it starts ticking, like you've spun a wheel."

Remo added that he doesn't really consider the pads to be "trackpads," which, to players and developers, often represent poor feedback. "This is just the opposite of that," he said.

Thanks for the link and quote. There's a lot of immediate hate about this thing, but I think it could be really amazing. Valve doesn't rush anything out, which is why we're all going crazy waiting for HL3.

They've done a lot of internal testing and will have the hardware beta soon, so I'm guessing that this is already really good and that the beta test feedback will help them make it truly incredible.

The last thing I'm waiting for is whether or not it has an incredible price tag too.

The last thing I'm waiting for is whether or not it has an incredible price tag too.

They're entire Steam Machine, SteamOS, Steam Controller push is looking to attract the living room, console market by design - so I'd be surprised if it exceeded $50. FWIW its got less mechanical and moving parts than regular Xbox/Playstation controllers.

That's not what its about. You can't kb/m from the couch and you can't have a tower case and wireless keyboard and mouse thown on the couch in the living room and have domestic harmony.

At the same time it isn't like Steam coming out with this will stop keyboards and mice everywhere from working, Or force you to tie your pc to your TV if that's not you thing.

My concern would be my hands cramping up. I find the 360 controller is thick enough to keep my hands more open, especially resting my thumbs on the sticks. The PS3 controller feels too small for me and the PSP is downright painful. Couldn't use it for much more than an hour without feeling like I suddenly developed arthritis. If the steam controller has a deep grip, it may be okay for me.

We'll see. If it sucks, there is always these ...

Except that 99.999% of console only players really dont care.

Yeah. Steambox is going to need killer launch titles and an accessible community. Sad as it sounds, for it to really take off it should have WoW and CoD and an easy way for people to insult each others moms. That is what console players want lol. :p

Don't forget, for games that don't suit this controller, you can always use a ps3, ps4, xbox, xbone, or 3rd party pc contoller, or a keyboard and mouse.

Looks like those trackpads have zones. It's also possible they will move, too. Let's not bash them until we try them. Nothing can beat KB/M for FPS and RTS games, and I pity the console noobs for even trying, but this thing may not be worse than my wireless 360 controller which is amazing for MAME/Gens, and passable as an XBMC remote.

I think it looks amazing and Kudos to Steam for INNOVATING.
While Sony and Microsoft take the deer in the headlights approach with controller design, Steam came up with something new and I think that is great.

Hopefully it handles as well as it looks.

Um yea, So Sony built their Vita around full front and rear touch controls, with tilt and motion tracking, and the PS4 has trackpad on the controller. They've been innovating

MS on the other hand has been doing video tracking with kinect, another first.

Everyone is tapping everyones ideas and making them their own bit, hell, why don't you get on steam for using a controller, I mean shit, they didn't make that first

Yep, it looks retarded. This is the exact reason why gaming sucks so bad on modern phones. No physical thumb sticks is a big fail. Controller is already bad for most games and this is a complete fail. It might works for some games but as a general purpose controller for all games I just can't see how it can be good.

button placement is awful the rest isnt bad
id go with thumb stick on the left track pad on the right

also hey at lest its not this

wonder if Kyle will take a part Steam box to make sure its got stuff in side like last time some one tried this lol

looks like it will offer way better resolution than the xbox and ps controllers.

maybe console gamers wont need to be hand held like little babies with auto aim anymore. And they will finally be allowed to play with us keyboard and mousers without being completely owned.

Also we all need to keep in mind that this IS NOT going to beat a keyboard / mouse, all it needs to do is beat a xbox / ps3 controller or whatever other controller people are using in living room type conditions'
Exactly. Valve isn't trying to replace the kn/m for PC gaming. It's just trying to put out something superior to console controllers when used on PC's.

Yeah, that's a good controller. As are the DualShocks. And, probably, the Steam Controller.

One of the beauties of the Steambox or of a PC running SteamOS, is that it is a regular PC. You will be able, no, are able, to use the 360 controller without much issue in many games available on Steam right now.
I am going to try the SteamOS, but I am very likely not going to buy an actual Steambox which will prolly ship with this controller..
That being so, if they want me to buy one, they will have to make it better than the 360 controller. No reason to spend whatever one of these things cost to buy one otherwise.
It may be great, but it will definitely have to prove it.

Still think a 360 controller with the right stick replaced with a good trackball, with on the fly sensitivity adjustment, would be the better compromise solution between KB/M and current controllers, for FPS games while sitting on the couch.

I'm sure it will collect a lot of hate from controller/console fans. Its attempt at differences are a testament that controllers are inferior.

I don't think it's "hate" at all...(man, is that word overdone and incorrectly used these days!)...and even though I won't use a controller made by anyone as a hi-res mouse and nice keyboard do it for me, the lack of buttons seems troubling from a design standpoint. With somewhat slick surfaces, say this controller's touchscreen, you more or less have to be looking at the thing to place your finger correctly--which means what? It means eyes off the game. With buttons you have a tactile feedback that you can memorize without looking at the controller--kind of like Braille works--their hands memorize the controller via the buttons and other protuberances by tactile feel. With smooth and slick control surfaces, even people used to the controller are still going to miss the right touch point probably 20% of the time--which means eyes off the game, again. This looks like the "ideal" controller designed by someone like me who uses mouse and keyboard and plays the kinds of games in which it doesn't matter if you take your eyes off the game for a few seconds every so often...;) I'm not surprised it doesn't appeal to people who game exclusively with controllers.

Eh, only way to tell is to try it. I'm not in need for this, so I'll probably never use it.

It looks awesome to me. I hate the thumbsticks and cant use them. I like the D-pad but most games wont let you use it. This looks like something I can use and get back into console gaming.

Yeah, that's my thought as well. Even if you have a perfect track pad, a thumb sliding over a surface is not an accurate input method. Put your thumb on a surface and notice it has a huge contact patch, and that contact patch will shift as you move your thumb and depending on friction and pressure. Half the challenge in phone games is controlling the contact patch of your thumb because it's a shitty input method. I'll have to give it a shot before I pass any final judgment, but the initial impression I get is very "meh".

Also, I tend to find thumb tracking with a touch input far more tiring to the thumb than thumbsticks after more than a few minutes of gaming.
