Starcraft II

Currently standing in Plat/Plat/Diamond/Diamond rankings for 1v1 and Team Randoms. I've slowed down a bit after feeling a bit burnt out, but I think I'm where I should be (top of plat to mid diamond range). The most important thing to do is scout, at the very least you should be scouting by 10 supply for early warnings of cheese tactics or tech rushes. In any non supply-cap battle, you can easily win if you know what your opponent is building.

Here are some indications of build possibilities (not exhaustive or absolute) with an early scout
Zerg
extractor before spawning pool - fast lings
2 extractors - mutalisks
2 hatcheris - mass lings
Knowing if they go roaches is also imporant for early battles so keep an eye for the Roaches nest
Also keep an eye out for banelings
Slow build (ie late spawning pool/extractors beyond 14 supply) - look for an early expansion

Protoss
2 Gateways building with nexus near full energy - Zealot rush
1 gateway/ 1 cybernetics core - stalkers or tech depending on 1 or 2 assimilators
Nothing - Either cannon rush or proxy zealot rush (easily counterable if you catch it early enough)

Terran
Positioning of the barracks is key, depending on if they have room for their tech lab, you should have time to prepare for reapers (queen, stalkers, or marauders around minerals). Multiple rax usually means marine rush. I sometimes try to impede Terran tech by building on their vespene or standing where the barracks is (if they hotkey the rax, it might be a significant delay before they can pump out marauders or reapers).
No barracks in base usually mean proxy reaper rush.

I have a friend who really struggled to get into 1v1 platinum while I delayed going up to finish off my combat achievements. He probably knows a good 2x/3x more build orders than I do, but I can still easily beat him. He's pretty stubborn about changing his strat, so once I know what he's doing, I can easily counter it. Strategy games are not about who can build a large army the fastest, but who can best take advantages of their opponents weaknesses.

There is usually a big delay with massing BCs (about the time when they're building multiple starports) when they're most vunerable, thats when you have to hit them. Either take out the starports themselves or take out the expansion supplying the starports.

^true

Scouting at the right time is a must. I'm starting to play 1v1 with protoss and it sucks having to rage quit after a bunch of zerglings kill your base.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Need more training.
I need to work on my speed definately. Also my directness. I never pick the right units and flail around trying to amass whatevers needed. Terran players do seem to take a while to amass their units. So if there is a Zerg and Terran player, which should you go for first? I think communication between my team would have made things a little better too. We usually try to do a hammer and anvil type thing (were both noobs, i'm a twitch shooter kind of person normally). One person defends and grinds them down while I counter attack when their attack fails. It works...occasionally.

I don't really use infestors special abilities, or really any. I'm still getting hold of things so should probably do some AI training and concentrate on units abilities. I'm too used to C&C/DOW steamrolling.

Lings always disturb me by the fact that they die en masse very very quickly. I think i'm just using them wrong.

I am looking for some people to play with tonight around 7PM PST till when ever ;) AIM is amdguy22 or PM if you want to play.

I'm quickly remembering why I never really got that into the original SC. I fared a bit better in WC3, but I'm finding playing to be pretty tedious/frustrating. I feel like a solid build order and unit selection is the biggest focus of the game (micro can be huge at high levels of play, I know) so I wind up feeling like I'm not really playing a game at times. It's so robotic and procedural...where's all the fluidity? I think I've just been spoiled by newer games (in feel, not release date).

I've only played Terran so far (I want to be good with one before I bother with another) and I easily hold my own against similar skilled Protoss/Zerg players but I've been struggling with the mirror match. For whatever reason, I always feel the need to keep pressure on my opponent (DoW 2 has made me pretty good at micro) but when it's MM+tanks on both sides I wind up taking a beating because their tanks are already deployed. I know I should sit back and get air units or medivac drop on them but it really seems like a long drawn out game is all you can get in a TvT unless someone actually pulls off a reaper rush (never seen it work on me, I never tried it myself).

I think my biggest deficiency as a player atm is scouting. I'm pretty good at getting my economy up and running, I know what units to counter with and my micro is solid, but I fail too often at identifying what my opponent is using.

I've been seeing the word food used to describe an amount of marines, etc. What does this mean? Just 40 marines, or cannon fodder?

Yea "food" is a lazy way of identifying terran supply, protoss psi, and zerg control (?) without having to think about any of these races in particular. Similarly, "worker" units are called "workers" and even "peons" sometimes.

I think the point is you shouldn't be letting an opponent supply cap like that. Zerg has never been about strait up even vs even supply cap fights. They're designed around trading armies and rebuilding quicker then the opponent can, or simply staying ahead.

^This.

Micro-ing Zerg in outmatched fights will also keep you alive. Micro Mutalisks against BC's and win the day. This is early in the game of course.. late game Terran/Protoss upgrades
pretty much mean you're screwed if you let it get that far. This is my biggest problem right now.

Loving SC2, my 1v1 was lacking so I found some replays on youtube. Helped my builds vs cheese. Then I found sc2casts.com bunch of replays from all over the place, and some Korean GSL.

3v3's and 4v4's have tons of cheese in platinum, 6 pools and proxy racks to reapers. ><

The best zergling play in 3v3 and 4v4 is 10 extractor, 10 pool -> rush speedling. If you insist on going very early zerglings, then 7 or 8 pool is much much better than a 6 pool.

Proxy reapers are OK, but 99% of the time you should just build it in your base and 8 rax reaper. It's less vulnerable and lets you get additional barracks out earlier for a ton of reapers.

Me and umcpgrad are starting our "grudge" match at 12AM EST tonight. If anyone is interested.

You mean at midnight? Damn guys... I'd watch, but gotta work :(

^^ They probably charge an arm and a leg for it too...

don't get me started on 5$ headphones that they want back after the flight...

mm... all of my recent flights have had in flight entertainment included in the air fare. It's pretty spiffy now. The little touch screens in front of you typically have a bunch of movies, tv shows, games (chess, sudoku, etc.), and music for no extra fee (of course I have my own headphones).

The funnest flight was one where they had in flight trivia and everyone on the flight played... and it displayed your seat. So if you owned up a round / game people start looking for you as they go to the bathroom :p.

What carriers? I always get stuck on the crappiest cheapest planes where you have to pay for pretty much everything.

Last 3-4 Atlantic flights I had (Delta, US Airways) were horrid.

Lufthansa was nice, but there is a premium...

Pretty sure it was US Airways for me. My most recent flight was from the Southeast US to China and it was pretty nice. Most of my other flights were from east coast to west coast ~ 4 hours.

Are you guys good or anything??? Don't really feel like watching some n00bs that I can beat with one hand behind my back.

Even noobs sometimes do something that you don't that you think "hey that would work" it's good to get a new angle. Of course they could be sucky noobs. But i'm guessing they are neither if their up to having "grudges"

I think the point of this was to put put their money where their mouths are. Probably just a bonus if they're both 200 apm micro-machines.

Who won? And can you upload the replay(/s)?

Yup, when it's the pros playing it usually comes down to who has the higher APM...

We both got on a little later than we wanted and didn't end up doing a 1v1. We'll get to it another time.

^still had a blast with 3v3, though.

And for what's it worth, petertew and umcpgrad are very good players. They've taught me a lot in just one night.

Man, i wish i could play this game ^^ was a fan of the first one, it looks alot of fun to

Why are diamond level players such whiners when they lose?

Probably because most aren't really Diamond players. Next time just tell the whiner not to cheese their way into Diamond. :D

I haven't actually played in about a week. Been too busy and in the mornings I've been watching GOMtv. Poor TLO this morning. :(

Patch 1.1 rumored for 9/22 I think.

Fuck Diamond and Plat, I have way more fun dicking around in 3v3 and 4v4 than taking 1v1 or 2v2 seriously :)

I was ECSTATIC when I was demoted from 4v4 Plat down to Gold!!!
