Starcraft II

I wonder what ladder rank I can get to if I six pool every single game.

Finally finished campaign this morning (don't have a lot of time to play during the week). Despite what the naysayers said about it I liked it and the story is only a third complete. So that means I finally got around to starting my placement matches. Haven't touched a 1v1 ladder match since the last day of the beta.

Surprisingly enough I won my first two matches. Unfortunately the first was a TvP (i'm terran) and the Protoss tried to Void Ray rush me from two ports with no scouting. So I dumped 5 more raxes and just plowed him with mass marine.

Next was a TvT. He didn't scout one bit so when I saw his late rax (I was pumping a marine already before his rax was 1/2 done) again I dropped 5 more raxes and lit up his 4 marauders with two dozen rines before he even got to pop a tank.

I may throw my last 3 though as I don't want to be dumped into Gold or Platinum just because I'm beating people who are brand new to SC2 or SC in general. While I'm much better then I was during the beta I'm still not a Gold level player. Not even silver really in my opinion.

somewhat similar. I've seen a pretty wide range of skill, even after placement. Two games yesterday; one terran built about 2 tanks and 3-4 marines in 10 min. The next I had to hold off constant lings into my base the whole game until the mutas got me.. These are supposedly both in my bronze league..

I've definitely realized that I can't win with anything but toss :( Which kinda bugs me. I also didn't really want to end up "too high" in the placement so messed around with zerg and terran, and lost 3 I think, putting me in bronze. Was silver in the beta. Think I'm comfortable being around that level though:)

I keep losing every time i play not-toss, but keep being dumb and insisting on trying it anyway. Think I need to try some skirmish or watch some videos or something

It's technically impossible for people to be 'all diamond / plat'. Think about it for a second. For very win there's a loss. The divisions don't have an absolute skill level, it's all relative. The player distribution will literally never change regardless of what the overall skill level is. If someone gets beat a lot, they get put in a lower division and vice versa.

That is true, it just that I have been playing the game a week now have never been faced with bronze, silver, gold player. I have only matched up with plat and dia players which I am little bit sick of.

Day9 FTW!

I'm tempted to just play out the placement and see how it goes. I'm not worried about W/L ratio or anything so maybe I'll just see what happens. Although the thought of being handed 10-15 losses in a row again because I'm so outmatched just isn't all that appealing. ;)

it happens
esp when you play late at night and in the early morning that is when the hardcore players play plat/diamon

oh wait I just answered my own question on why I am only matched up with plat/ diamon players hahahahaha

Does starcraft II keep track of your overall K/D ratio from all of the games? Of course it tracks the W/L ratio but idk about K/D.. I remember from my Warcraft 3 days you could see the K/D at the end of the game only.

lol, yeah saw Day9 has a tutorial video channel or something, but need to check it out more. Watched a bunch of HDstarcraft casts and find those pretty helpful. Kinda cheesy commentary but who cares.

Do most people here stay with one race, or mix it up? I feel especially my macro goes out the window when I play "off-race".

btw: UMCP = Univ MD College Park ?? :p

It seems like harassing is one of the most important skills in the game. Taking out one or two gathering units or one building early on really devastates the other player plus takes their mind off of their build and puts it on defense/paranoia. Finding good early harass strategies helped me a lot.

Sorry meant W/L. Too many years of FPS games. ;) Post has been edited. :)

Day9 is one of the best. His dailies are ridiculously informative and his commentary on live games is some of the best around IMHO. I like Crota as well. You can see his stuff on Youtube. Just search for Crota Shoutcast.

HDStarcraft is pretty good but I can't take their commentary at times because like you said they get cheesy. There's quite a few others out there too.

There's a pile of people who stream over at Team Liquid as well. Some do fairly good self commentary if they're not playing a ladder match. Some do good commentary during ladder matches. Some look at replays and give commentary on other games. Always fun to watch some of the better players though because you can see them live and how they react.

I find watching live is better then replays at times because you can hear them say "shit...need this unit or that unit". Some will even go back to their replays afterwords and show what they did wrong and explain why.

sweet, same here! Go turtles!

Vermillion; thanks for the pointers to some other casters and tutorials. I've just looked at the forums at teamLiquid before, will check you the videos too. Although with just an hour or less a night to play the game lately I'll have to decide between actually playing or watching someone else:)

After 12 years SC2 comes out the same week I get totally swamped at work!?!

Haha yeah I've been into watching SC2 commentaries for a bit now, Husky & Day9 ftw, but after SC2 came out... every time I start watching a commentary I get all into SC and think "wait why am I watching this??" and pause video and load up sc2 for a quick game.

I'm not sure about most people, but I can't do a damn thing in the plat division if I play anything but Protoss. I tried Zerg in the beta and got raped. I still watch videos where people play other races than I do and I read up on their strategy so I know how to counter it, but Ican't do it.

I played all 3 races in beta pretty extensively. I've played solely zerg so far in in release, but I don't think it'll last; I'll likely switch races based on my 2v2 partner. Playing as zerg main and then 'off-racing' feels refreshing since macro is much easier as the other races, and more options open up. I find protoss to be by far the 'easiest' race to play. On the ladder, Terran dominates the top 100 and protoss dominates every other bracket.

I mostly play Zerg, but the zerg suck so badly nowadays. There is no longer a zerg rush with beginner units. You can't rush with zergling or hydralisks. They are just too weak, even after upgraded.

While now the other races have beginner unit rushing. You can rush with a flood of marines from Terrans or you can rush with a flood of zealots from Toss.

I beg to differ. Upgraded hydras are pretty strong on their own.

The problem with hydras is that they get hardcore countered by plenty of stuff from each race (even zerg itself).

The topic of the 'state of zerg' is heavily discussed right now. The general consensus is that the current map pool favors terran a lot (small maps - abusable chokes / cliffs, etc.). Zerg lacks unit diversity and opening options against the other races and is also the most 'management intensive' race. Idra of course has machine like precision with his macro and is an incredible player overall.

zergs are mainly a counter race or the aggressive race depend on the level you are on

mutas, and zergs can have many openings depends on how good you are

I play random exclusively.

As zerg I've been trying out the one base fast mutas build. Fairly effective! (~gold level)

1 base muta is a risky build at anything higher than platinum. The point is, the only solid opening past platinum requires the zerg to secure a second base before 20 supply. Any other opening is either all in or puts the zerg too far behind if it fails (baneling bust, 1 base roach, fast mutalisks, etc.)

Whereas terran and protoss have a plethora of openings that do not put them at risk of anything and are easy to transition into other builds.

gold-dia huge huge differences
but fast mutas builds is somewhat effective vs. marg from t and imm from p pushes like I was saying depending on scoutin

So... at diamond level : 14 hatch -> ling -> roaches/hydras -> whatever based other guy?

So I ended up being brave and went 5-0 during my placement. I'm in trouble as now I'm in Platinum. <.<

Yes and the grand plan is to hit 200 and save enough larva to replace your entire army.

It takes a 400 supply army to win...

Placement is pretty random.

Went 4-1 in 2v2 and 5-0 in 3v3 and both got us placed in Gold.

Just had a fun 4v4 or shall I say 4v2....

Was 3PZ vs 3TP

2 of my allies got owned by a void rush 10 minutes into the game. We lasted another 22 minutes managing to take out the other guys.. 2v4.... Was annoying, we had better macro and micro but just got overwhelmed because the two noobs got wiped early.

LOL

I got placed into 4v4 Gold... rank 2.... There are only 2 people in my division!

Just had an awesome game. We took out 3 out of 4 players, the other guy almost took us all out, in the end we won  It was one sad game... no detection for half the match...
