Starcraft 2 Beta

sadly between work and bnet being moody I haven't laddered at all since patch 12/13. Spent a little time with popular ums maps (nexus wars ftw) but I crash out 4/5 times :\

Hopefully I'll see all you guys for Phase 2, and hopefully I won't have to track down your emails to get you all on my friends list :p

Agreed!!

BNET 2.0 = fail

Bringing back identifiers shouldn't be too difficult, and I'd imagine they'll do that.

I just played my first round last night. Terran vs. zerg.
I was scared that I was going to be rushed. After a few bunkers full of marines and no attack, I started to expand. I wondered why he was letting me build all over the map without attacking.
Built 4 more command centers, 6 factories, 4 starports, 2 armories, etc. Then I started spreading missile turrets all over the map. I sent out a few marines to scout and found out where he was about 10 mins in.

3 siege tanks across the gap platform from his main, 20 marines to back them up and 4 basic air units (forgot their name). Moved air forward to get line of sight and tanks started firing. Destroyed both refineries and a few drones and he surrendered!

Such a let down. I wanted to learn about the new units. I couldn't get co-op vs. ai working either.

My main complaint is that it is too similar to the first Starcraft. No eyefinity support. The graphics aren't pretty enough. Sure it looks better, but I see far too many jaggies.

I dunno about you, but I play toss in SC2 way differently than SC1. The biggest change for me, was queuing up actions for any unit via the Shift key. For example, I can have a probe leave a mineral field to build 2 pylons, a gateway, and go back to mining without me having to watch over it. It makes scouting a lot easier too since I can issue a unit to move to each node automatically. EDIT: Forgot that you can queue up movement in SC1 too, its something I learned later so I forget about it often lol.

Setting groups to multiple buildings was a big deal too, like for using Chrono Boost with multiple Nexuses selected.

Its a lot bigger than that. Protoss armies are incredibly mobile thanks to warp gates. Zerg can spread creep, Terrans can fly buildings, but Protoss can plant pylons to warp in additional units. This is a tremendous benefit, attacking a base and replenishing reinforcements from a nearby pylon in a forward position instead of having them trudge all the way across the map. Its pretty great.

Indeed, I've only touched the tip of the iceberg .

You haven't seen it all until you've seen 40+ 3/3 hydralisks pop right in your base from three nydus worms. Damn, those bastards can mobilize an army pretty fast!

someone needs to start putting pylons around the edge of their base and watching the mini map :D. You let zerg get to 3/3! Where's your psi storm soldier!?

I was the zerg. :p

It was in a 3v3 match, my partners had a observer in their base and I popped in the hydras. We were watching their army and when their army moved toward us, I popped in the hydras and wiped out 2 out of 3 bases and was back at my own base.

Aaaah, that was a fun match.

But seriously, nydus is dangerous. After I was surprised by a nydus surprise buttseks for the 4th time (and I'm a zerg player and use this tactic, no less) I started having overlords everywhere and changed the minimap colors to allies (enemies show up in red instead of color). Works much better now. :D

BAH, I can't seem to get out of bronze placements :-d Even though it's over soon, anyone want to add me and seriously teach me a few things? My friends and I keep getting spanked, in 2v2 & 3v3. Need help asap, willing to play until the beta is offline! Name is runudownquik (no C)

Damn that sucks, I didn't know it was ending tonight.... Well at least I got to play it at this past LAN party :p

Yeah, and I was JUST finishing my 3/3 hydra upgrades! I would've totally pwn'ed them. Void rays are weak against hydras.

I dunno Voidrays with +2 weapons and speed pretty much melt anything in seconds, especailly with good micro, que attacking, and charge building before engaging. I have yet to see 3/3 hydras  must be a scary site..

Damn, all these games I've bought are sitting here already started and I really don't want to start in the middle, or start over as I haven't really played anything except the Beta since I got in. What is everyone going to play until the beta comes back?

Gonna finally finish up Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Red Dead Redemption. I picked up DOW2: Chaos Rising on Steam sale last week so I'll give that a shot as well. I prefer Starcraft but DOW2 is cool too.

Yeah, 3/3 hydras are strong. They kill pretty much anything -- even void rays.

Heh, 3/3 Colossus is pretty scary too :p.

I hate those bastards. Even if they're not upgraded, they can kill lots of upgraded hydras on their own. I always send zerglings or mutas against them.

Luckily, I've never met a upgraded colossus. :D

I have 12 math books with around 4000 problems that I have to finish  So glad beta is over for now :D

Very true. That's why speedlings or mutas exist!

Speedlings get 1 shot regardless of upgrades (tanks in SC1 did 1/2 dmg to small units - not anymore). Mutas are terrible in a straight fight - they're one of the least efficient units in the game. Heavy mech builds have a few thors and/or vikings that can easily take care of any mutas.

True, but if you get a handful of lings through, then it is no loss, considering hydras are expensive.

anyone manage to get starcrack working with the new patches? or do i have to reinstall the game to play against the ai?

imo, terran mech against zerg is too strong, and that's why the last patch decreased siege damage from 60 down to 50. it only takes around 5 tanks to reach critical mass against zerg, even if you have a shitload of zerglings. with just a few support units for the tanks, it's pretty hard to stop a mech push. and no, i'm not just talking out of my ass, i'm a terran and zerg player, diamond rank 1 -15.

neato. TLO talks terran mech vs zerg with Day9.

I'm having crazy withdrawals since the beta ended. So sad... I miss it much already. Can't the game come out any faster already! >_<

Yup... and any heavy mech build can easily get enough hellion to deal with zerglings since hellion are a natural mineral sink to accompany tanks.

I was all diamond in 1v1 and 2v2, all platinum pre-diamond patch as well. I played all 3 races (zerg the most though). The one thing that bothered me when playing as zerg is seeing a bunch of siege tanks. There's really not a whole lot you can do once they get more than 3 or 4.

I guess blizzard wants zerg to get ultras to counter tanks - that's pretty laughable. Brood lords are decent, but vikings are again a natural part of terran builds so you're taking a big risk teching that far to get brood lords. Infestors are basically not a big deal anymore. Once people see them they just immediately kill them. It's hard to make enough and still maintain a reasonable army mix.

Check out the Day9 Daily with TLO: http://blip.tv/file/3732380

TLO shows off a zerg build that countered a heavy Thor and Tank build, and it was mainly Ultralisks backed up by Infestors. It worked really well, and it was nice seeing Ultras being used for once. You might like it!

Plus 1 to this.

+2. I didn't think I'd miss SC2 so much, but partway through watching yesterday's Day9 Daily I started missing it bad. Its like, man, I REALLY want to try that thing but I frigging can't. :/
