Starcraft 2 Beta

The graphics remind me of C&C Generals... like wow this is it?

being able to scroll in and just the main feel of it is so C&C Generals to me

attention to details, not something they spent a lot of time on... the Zerg have little to no detail on them.

I max every setting out fyi and it looks like a generation old game...

Sorry but even that screeny of the nuke blast just shows the lacking in detail and quality workmanship

Yea I know, I feel the same about the graphics in general. My shot was just an amusing 300 kill shot from a nuke :p.

I feel that blizzard has been somewhat jaded by the success of WOW. They feel that low poly / blocky / cartoonish graphics is what the masses want. There are many other RTS games that far surpass SC2 in graphics, but the gameplay is fantastic so far.

Actually everything in motion makes the game look very nice, I don't know what you guys are talking about.

For real , when was Starcraft ever about graphics?

It wasn't but that doesn't mean people can't be a little disappointed with the way it looks in 2010. Age of Empires 3 which came out in 2005 has more detail than SC2.

Obviously I still love the game and I've played over a hundred games of the beta in the past 2 weeks as well as some nice messing around with the editor (WTB publish option now!).

I mean cmon, if you dont think this game has shit graphics, seriously. I mean it works, its fine, and the game is GREAT! but, its not gonna win any awards, even in 2004 for gfx.

I suppose the fact that it scales uber well and massive battling doesnt slow down in the slightest is a big reason for it. But if the first time you loaded it up you didnt flinch in disappointment at the gfx, then i just dunno.

That's actually exactly how I felt when I first fired it up. But things just look 'right' now since I've played so much of it. Meh, hopefully the single player has some razzle dazzle in it.

While SC2 is obviously the sequel to SC1, it can't really have mind blowing graphics. SC1 was renowned for being able to run on basically anything, and if its sequel could only run on top of the line hardware, its reception would be less than stellar.

I personally am fine with the graphics, they're an improvement, yet scalable to many different levels of hardware.

Would be nice to have a tactical zoom type option...

Damn you supcom for ruining rts forever with your tactical zoom and deficit spending economy system...

But what more do you really want?
It's Starcraft and it fucking rules...

I didn't flinch, I'm not expecting crysis like graphics in an rts. Hell I much rather them just improve on the gameplay more so than the graphics. The graphics are good for what it is. Compared to WC3 (comparing blizzard titles) it looks way better. RTS games that have tried to push the envelope in the graphics department don't do so hot as most blizzard games, they might be good to look at but shite in the gameplay department. Blizzard has put a good balance on both.

Now if we are talking about an FPS, it better look pretty good with good gameplay.

The problem is that if those ghosts were getting attacked, they would of been toast before half of that little squad was taken out.

1. Not if they were cloaked

2. I thought the entire purpose of the ghost was to sneak up on units and ambush them? Seems like that strategy would work to me.
Don't play terran much, but plan on trying it out soon.

In terms of DPS you can't really beat snipe. I've seen it used to great effect in a pro level replay.

Ghosts are the 'caster' of terran ground. It's like an infestor or high templar. In that respect, they're great units since they're not bad fighters either.

If you had a couple marines and maurders up close that might work out. I need to experiment with ghost a little bit more. I play terran and have not really tried them out.

I just tried it and I have to say the micro involved is pretty intense, at least for me. Units move around alot and queing up so many snipes is not that easy to get maximum effect. I wish there were a mode where you could activate a "snipe mode" where each ghost attack would be a snipe until energy ran out or the mode was deactivated. But I am not enthused about that idea either, defeats the whole concept of a "snipe" where you specifically target a unit. I guess the most effective use of that is only meant for the incredibly accurate high end players. Oh well.

It's the need to target so many individual units in a battle that kills it, though it would be great for a few deadly units like taking out infestors as it is currently designed.

I won my first terran vs protoss lastnight (been playing basically friends only.) It seems like my old mindset of "protect and amass" (turtling with better expansion) for terran in SC1 just cant work anymore.

I was extremely agressive with reaper harass while expanding and cranking out some air offense along with a sea of marines and mauds. I managed to keep him from doing anything he wanted and was able to roll in with a forceful swarm of a huge mix of terran units. It seemed barely any units were lost despite arriving to a sizeable stalker / sentry / zealot counter.

It seems like terran has become more of a "control" race than they formerly were. All in all, Im starting to enjoy playing them alot. In fact, every race is a lot of fun for me to play. I used to hate anything but zerg in sc1. Loving thissss!

semi related - how do some of the more experienced terran players use nuking? chokes on bases, drop and nuke on main expos? hit any outlier / unprotected buildings? Just curious what is best to go after if you go for a ghost heavy / nuke strategy. Is this ever really a viable offensive maneuver?

So much fun.

Every game I have ends up being epic :D

Typically for Terran I go for block off -> 3-4 marauders + 3-4 marines -> Rush to 2x Starports -> cloak + 4 banshees -> Harass his mineral line or take out some key buildings.

All the while having 4 raxes pumping out marauders + teching to Battle cruisers (much easier post patch).

They don't know what hit em :D

Yeah I have found myself using Battle cruisers much more after the patch. And I love banshees! I usually try and get a siege tank or two if I can as well, they can be deadly if you can protect them.

You mean like autocast?

Just practice with it some more, I imagine it gets easier with time. Also, it's perfect for sniping out mutalisks / harassing units before they get into your base / run away.

My Impression of every player on battle.net:

Standard Terran Player: "Protoss is garbage OP, Phoenix is so overpowered lifting is such cheese. Let me continue to cry about how weak my race is, but I'm actually just not as good as I think I am! OMG Protoss = EZ RACE ROFL LAMO I'm so uneducated!"

Standard Protoss Player: "PROXY GATES RULE DUDE! Check out my record and stand slack jawed at my nerd supremacy! I'M SUCH A PSEUDO INTELLECTUAL THAT THINKS PROTOSS IS SLICK, REFINED, AND COOL JUST LIKE MY PERSONALITY! I'm going to cheese you every game, and if you're decently skilled, I'll lose! Ha Ha! Watch me go two gate and try and win early every game!"

Standard Zerg Player: "WTF BLIZZARD WHERE ARE LURKERZZ! C'mon Blizz!!!! Zerg needs unit diversity, I go ling/muta or hydra/roach every game and never experiment with your other units or different build orders at all! But my record is good because the same thing works over and over!"

Standard Random Player: "I'm better than you because I play random, my record might not be as good but you're just a newbie that plays one race. I mean think about it man, I can 6 rax reaper, 6 pool, or proxy gate you and you'll never know which one is coming! How GOSU IS THAT MAN!!!"

Final Rant: 90% of people on battle.net are awful. Everyone cheeses me in platinum league, even random players, and when it doesn't work they complain. All of my tech trees make me an ass hole, or a newbie. Immortal timing push - over powered cheese. Phoenix harass - Playing like an ass hole. Four gate push - Over powered cheese. Three gate Stalkers with blink into DTs - OH MY GOD DTs ARE SUCH BULL SHIT, blink is so gay and by passes my spine crawlers!"

Everyone on battle.net needs to quit crying about imbalance and play the damn game, you don't know what is imbalanced because new strategies are always coming out. Everyone is way too hasty to call something imbalanced rather than trying to switch their game plan. I have more than a doze specific build orders and a million different timings depending on what I see a player doing. Yes, I lose a lot of games because I screw up some aspect of my play, or I use the wrong build order in the wrong situation and can't recover, but I never put my blame on the game. IT'S YOU, you're not doing something right, it's time to develop a new strategy or think differently. I'm sure a lot of players would like to think they've tried everything, but they haven't. Every Protoss player complained about how bad Protoss air was, then NonY's phoenix build came out and people started to see how good phoenixes can be.

I'm really disappointed by the general demeanor of players, and people caring so much about their record that they think cheese builds are the only way to play ladder games. I'm really disappointed by people complaining about race imbalance when new strategies are constantly being developed.

Cheese wins mean nothing. Stats mean nothing in Beta either.

Winning without the need to cheese, or being able to counter a cheese is where its at and feels much more rewarding. Thankfully, thats about 99% of my wins (Without the need to cheese).

Lol, in Silver my early aggression seems to end up being cheese since no one knows how to deal with it. Hope I get into Gold soon, I have had some great macro games against gold players.

Heh, I think the only thing that is "cheesy" is something that can't be stopped early game or next to impossible that will leave your economy in the pits. Other than that its pretty fair game (void rays etc) what not. I've been accustomed to see a lot of cheese that I have figured to counter thanks to platinum games haha.

In the plat 2s bracket, it seems to me like whenever a team is both the same race, they more often than not do some early cheese.

Yesterday my partner and I lost to double 2 gate zealot faceroll, double 6 pool, and double marauder with slow faceroll. Sigh.

Ever get owned by a cannon rush yet? It has become one of my favorite tactics when I get random protoss.

Had a game where I rushed a pilon under the entrance, build three canons while my zerg buddy did a 6 pool rush to protect the pilon. We boxed em in, I kept massing cannons and my zerg team mate went hydras. The whole 2v2 took under 8 minutes for them both to be wiped out.

Checked their ranks and they were top ranked silver in 2v2 and plat 1v1. Good times.

That's funny because I was just in a ZP vs. ZZ game 2v2 plat (My partner and I were ZP). The ZZ team went double ling rush... my partner d/c'd RIGHT as the lings reached our base. I took over and pumped zealots and my own lings. Beat back the rush, countered and killed one of the players. The other player had mutalisk at that point so I backed off. The mutalisk kills my d/c'd partner's base while I macro like hell and rush his probes out to build a new base. I then basically macro two players up and beat his shit in, wasn't even close.

Really hate that I missed the pre-order beta keys; thought it was only a US thing and not available in Canada :(

Lol, my friend and I just did our 2v2 placements last night for fun, we both play toss, so every game we opened up with 2 a gate zealots. We weren't really trying and we took our first 4 games that way with heavy aggression/cheese. Our last game turned in to a good macro game but I don't see how anyone is ever going to beat XX v PP when we have combined 16 warpgates down. I went dual robo and pumped colossus and he went dual stargate and got a voidray and phoenix mix. It turned quickly into a slaughter and our opponents could not keep up. The best part was the final push I had 18 sentries and hallucinated a soooo many colossus, our opponents reactions were priceless.

played zerg for the first time and got destroyed by protoss who were cloaked and swarmed my base. I couldn't even defend my base as I did not know how to counter them. What units were these? also how do I detect stealth attacks with each race?

I am a total noob to SC2 and my WR is like 20% so I am trying to get better. I am more of a turtle and like amassing a huge army before I attack. I notice 90% of the people try to rush me and I don't survive the first wave of like 4 troops lol.

I also get pissed off when people send like one worker unit over to spy on me 30 seconds into the game

Those units were Dark Templars (http://sc2armory.com/game/protoss/units/dark-templar)

Your unit to see them is the Overseer (http://sc2armory.com/game/zerg/units/overseer), it is a morphed Overlord. You can morph an Overlord into an Overseer once you have morphed your Hatchery in a Lair.

Look at the help menu in the game, there are Tech Tree and all the units listed for each race. Or use the site linked above its a great way to learn about all the unit, buildings, and abilities.

Probably Dark Templars or a Mothership (cloaks everything nearby).

Zerg detectors are Overseers and Spore Crawlers. Overlords can mutate into Overseers once you have a Lair.

It's called scouting, and you're gonna have to do the same thing. If you don't know what your opponent is building, how are you going to counter them?
