Starcraft 2 Beta

I click back and forth between my base and the mineral line at the start of the game to keep my workers organized. It's a slight advantage if you can do it, but keeping you workers from having to shift mineral patches is important.

I dunno, my workers all organize themselves and don't switch patches.

They start switching if you have too many and at that point you should have sent em to the natural.

That's actually something they've changed considerably from SC1 - the workers now optimize themselves pretty well as far as I can tell. I still remember the good old days of SC1 where all 4 workers pile onto one mineral at the start.

ya, when i play Ive noticed that all the workers seemt o spread themselves otu evenly among the resources.

+1.

After 22 games, I watched replays of games lasting past initial rush, I had an average APM of about 45 (was around 40 when I started to ~55 with last couple games).

The APM rockets to around 160-170 when I micro my army, but a lot of times when I simply macro it sits at 0-30 range.

I don't see the point in inflating APM.

It just gets you used to clicking faster and staying in the habit of it. When I started my APM was average 30-40 or so, now Its 60-120 because I'm much better at clicking when directing my forces. I play Zerg, so it's pretty important to be able to click and move the mouse extremely fast and precise, especially since speedlings are so quick.

I dunno.

I run Core 2 duo at 3. ghz and OCed 8800GTX and the thing flies.... It defaulted to all Ultra settings and not a slowdown even in huge battles.

Check it out:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/blizzard-entertainment-starcraft-ii-benchmark,2611.html

Looks like there's a major CPU bottleneck. All of the high end cards hit a FPS plateau at under 2560x1600 even at ultra.

Also, i7 > Phenom II X4 by a pretty significant amount... Stock i7 920 beat the 3.5 ghz Phenom II X4

I hope blizz releases a high end AI enemy option so we can see if that has any substantive effect on cpu usage.

The "very easy" AI can barely build units, let alone attack for more than a millisecond before it runs scared.

Well the conclusion was any dual core over 2.5 ghz should handle the game fine. Single cores take the biggest hit. And apparently a 9800 GT does fine with ultra settings so it's no surprise a 8800 GTX (G92? G80?) does the same.

I'm not concerned about normal ladder play performance... I'm curious to see numbers when custom games get crazy and spawn hundreds of units.

That's also true. Lots of high skilled AI should bog the CPU down a little more.

I agree to a point, if you just rally point them once they'll shift around to different patches and that wastes time. It's a small edge but if you can stop them from shifting to different patches early while macroing and scouting, it should help just a little bit. I do it and I think I get a slight resource bonus early, however slight it may be.

Well hopefully it doesn't reset again. Logged in last night, reset, and this morning. Now I'm platinum and would kind of like to stay there. Better learning experience I think.

Anyone else play protoss and find that getting colossi isn't such a great idea any more? I've had more luck getting out a few immortals and switch to a twilight council and going either blink, charge, or both and getting HTs. Sometimes I get DTs first and stick with immortal/zealot/sentry/stalker.

I only use colossi for long range, keep in the back for battles or take out encampments that have bunkers, cannons etc.

Meh even for cannons, tanks, bunkers, ect. I always find it's best just to have a few immortals microed on them because of their bonus damage to armored. Immortals have nice range with the upgrade, but they're a huge liability against zerg now due to the increased range of Neural Parasite.

Yep, with the buff of neural parasite, many many battles will be decided by that in a macro war.

It is something worth while to think about, I've been trying mixing void rays into my army and I haven't been successful, but I think there is a place for a small amount of air units.

Also I didn't realize how good Templar are against Terran going Banshees or Thors without Psi Storm. Feedback is a seriously underused skill that I admittedly need to be more cognizant of.

Feedback can one shot banshees, they are very very good against them. I've played with a few protoss players who feedbacked my banshees for sure.

Just got my beta code last night and started playing today. I'm a complete noob. Anyway, my battle.net for SC2 is hkEvo.grimreaper if you want to add me.

Also, has anyone had any problems with things disappearing off the map and becoming unselectable? It seems as though it has something to do with Crossfire and Catalyst AI. I've read that I should disable Catalyst AI, but that disables Crossfire. I don't want to disable Crossfire, so is there another workaround?

Templars are incredibly useful versus terrans. I think we talked about this before, maybe we even played a game together where I feedback and psi stormed a bunch of BCs.

Maybe not, the games can kind of blur together after a while. :)

i played two games tonight, the best one was a guy trying to medivac drop me when I had the Xel' Naga tower up and saw him coming. I hate my templar archives hidden pretty well and I killed all of his units before they hit the ground. I'm pretty sure he was upset because he left the game right after that, hehe.

The other game was great too, because it was a 2v2 and both players were terran, one went BCs and the other went thors. Thank you zealots, sentries, stalkers, and feed back! I hardly even used psi storm in that game.

How are you guys getting into the races?

I have played mostly terran so far, when I went random my lower familiarity with the different races lowered my performance.

For now I am focusing on getting more in depth and nuanced with a single race first before I dive into others. For example, when I started I never really made use of ravens, but now I make sure to have a few for general use in certain games. I have wiped out entire legions of void rays with timely seeker missile uses. And to date I have almost never utilized the point defense drone ability, but intend to get more used to deploying it, especially when my air is going up against corrupters or a mass army of hydras. Are you all doing the same or are you random all the way, and if you are more heavy toward one race, which did you choose and why?

I know decko and refraxion are amazing random players, but I have no idea how they do it. Since sc2 is really my first rts that i've played online, its been helpful for me to just play once race. Picked zerg because I love the expansive style of play it affords me. I have no inclinations to switch now :p

Yes, people who can random and do well easily scare me.

I used to play a lotttt of protoss before I switched over to terran. I have now found out some decent techniques to deal with all races, but terran vs. terran is still iffy for me. Mirror matches are always bad and if I can't read it properly.. I usually lose out in an all out macro war :(.

Zerg is easily my worst race of them all, I tried it out recently with a friend and the new patch doesn't seem to let you spawn larvae just by targetting the mini-image of the hatchery (Forget the term.. haha). Pre-patch you were still able to do it, I don't know what Blizzard did..

Like always, my macro needs to improve and zerg is definitely a good race to practice up on that :p.

Holy shit I can't believe I made platinum. I been stuck at copper for the longest, then with each reset, I have been placing higher ranks. Won all 5 of my placement matches straight through. I also got gold in random 2v2.

I don't really play random any more, but I wouldn't mind switching back. It's hard to really be competitive and play random, because you have to switch between so many variables on the fly. The problem I'm having now is a limited amount of build orders I can get away with as a Protoss player. I don't like relying on the robotics facility but it's so huge to have it as your first tech two building. If I'm going to skip it I'm either getting a star gate or going for a 4 gate push with some type of twilight council skill. I haven't been playing as much recently due to school, but I think it's a good thing because it gives me some time to just think about different scenarios.

Also regarding build orders, I think once your comfortable with what you're going for, it's up to you to make it work. I've won a pretty significant PvP match the other day using Phoenixes and gravitron beam against a typical immortal build.

As far as Race preference goes, I think I really prefer to play Zerg, and I'm best at it except in ZvZ match ups. I'm just bored by the scenario and I don't have enough experience with the concept. I like playing PvP because it seems like the most diverse mirror match-up so I've gotten fairly decent at playing Protoss. My Terran is lacking, but I watch a lot of Terran replays and watch a lot of interesting strategies. I think I could be decent with them if I practiced a bit, but I just don't like a lot of what I'm seeing from the race thus far. To me they're a race centered around early harassment/mid game harassment and marauder massing. I played a few custom games doing the no gas 4 barracks build, and while it's a unique strategy because you have so many marines and eventually end up with a copious amount of gas, it seems difficult to really use it effectively. And during the early game I feel like you'd be so susceptible to harassment because your forced to make nothing but marines. I love seeing thors be used against mutalisks, and tanks/thors +marauders against hydra/roach massers. It's amazing how effective tanks and thors are against Zerg.

Congrats, I lost to some really good zerg player my 1st match and won the remaining four matches. Good luck in platinum, I hope I can rank up like I did before the reset, but I'm kind of doubtful.

God, I swear my teammates are always mildly or full on retarded. I am getting rushed by some zerglings and a zealot, my zerglings are killed and my teammate continues to send 2 zealots across the map to 'rush' them when I am getting destroyed.

i just finished my 5 placement matches, and won them all. i'm placed in platinum, division rank 46, and bonus pool 29. i have no idea what all these numbers mean, and i couldn't find it on the FAQ on SC2. can someone tell me what division rank 46 mean? does that mean i'm the top 46 player in platinum? or is there sub-rank in the divisions also? what is the bonus pool number?

Bonus pool number is how much "exp" you will get after winning. Also, being ranked 46 in platinum doesn't really mean anything.. there are about a billion different platinum divisions, also an influx of gamestop/amazon/futureshop/bestbuy keys have made bnet pretty easy for the most part.

don't get my wrong, i'm not trying to brag about being in platinum and blah blah. i'm just trying to understand how the rankings work. after 3 games in platinum, i'm even more clueless on how it works. i lost two, yet won only once. my division is now 29, and my bonus pool is now 15. how did i move up when i lost more games than i won in platinum?

Oh no, I didn't mean to be harsh or anything. All I meant is to take the rankings and what not with a grain of salt, heh. There are just way too many divisions in each league to be of significance (Unless you're consistently top 8).

Also, division rank 29 means you're rank 29 in your division. If you click on the ladders tab.. you will see which division # you are actually in.

So I got to fire up my preorder beta for the first time, and merely played my cousin. Hes been studios of HDStarcrafts videos (he watches it like a sitcom every night while eating dinner and shit, its almost disturbing if it wasnt so awesome haha) ...so I thought he had my number for sure. I used to dominate sc1 against him. Nonetheless, I went 3-0 vs him last night - but I dont feel too confident despite.

The first game was PvP - I simply outmined and over powered him through the tech tree. He had more units but was lacking in blink, the zealot charge, etc. His sentry shield micro was worrying me for a bit. Once I got a few void rays it was gg.

PvT - he was harassing me hard with marauders and marines, keeping void rays more or less useless...I was matching his harassing but wearing down quick. I decided to try something risky and build at the high yield field for my 3rd expansion way before I normally felt "safe" to do so. Right around this time he started hammering my void rays with Ravens I think? but some funny micro on both sides ended up giving me 2 void rays left after the show down and hit and run from both sides. The increased money let me quickly turn tide once i dropped an extra robotics fac and starport to crank out some immortals and more void rays. The final straw was warping a bunch of dark templars into his base via one of those moving pylon guys. He held that off but the void rays and immortals tore up what remained of his marauders / tanks / marines / whatever else.

3rd match, ZvZ - he tried to ling rush but I knew he would from scouting...I dropped 2 spine crawlers and went for roaches...beat him to expand...and just cleaned up with roaches and hydras.

I attribute the 3rd to a botched rush. I used to play the hell out of zerg so i generally know how to deal with early rushes and stay agressive, despite MAJOR game changes in the way they play. Not too worried about that loss...although I Have to ask - can you still 9 pool, drop a gas, build the 10th drone again, and still drop 6 lings when your overlord pops? Just to get some defense / harassment without going pure rush, but being copmletely vulnerable right away?

as for the other 2 matches...I feel like the void rays were my only saving grace. Thus, I know when he gets protoss hes gonna be extra inclined to punish me with my own medicine. Whats the best way to deal with them with each race? I know they arent overpowered, just hard to deal with in numbers it seems...

Anyone have some guidance on zerg builds and anti air with zerg now? My biggest complaint with the zerg is that so much of their buildings look the same at first...I'm having issues differentiating between alot of the tech buildings...I'll adjust Im sure.

Anyone who can answer any of these questions is my hero for the day =) - loving this game, just gotta say. Cant wait to go after some pubs once we adjust some more.

EDIT: another question - zerg seem to have the ability to spread easily, and the larvae concept lets them pop out units at expansions with ease, same as the orig. P and T were always lacking in this, and had to "move units" for defense / aggro from expansions, traditionally. The protoss warp however, changes that, and seems to give the protoss ALOT more mobility for expansions and attacking out of forward points. Do the terran have something significant that lets them possess a somewhat comparable advantage?

Yeah I agree about the influx of new players. All I seem to be getting in ranked are void ray rushes and other stupidity. The games are pretty easy. The new people forget we've seen all that and can counter it pretty easily.

I've just been playing custom and having better games. Some even last 30-40 minutes.

Yeah you can still cancel an extractor and get 11/10. It's part of my standard build now.

Against Zerg I have just gotten in the habit of 10 overpool and going from there. If they rush, it's pretty much an automatic win, and if not my economy is pretty safe.

If you know they are going air, just get hydras. By the time they get a few banshee/void rays, or whatever you can have a decent number. Retaliate with speedlings since they will have minimal defenses. You can transition into mutas from there as well. Use an overlord to make creep in an area an opponent is less likely to scout and drop a spire there. Nice little surprise.

The only problem I have with ZvZ is banelings. It's only happened a few times, but I haven't beat it yet and it's pretty annoying.

Whats the terran answer to void rays?

ZvZ is an interesting matchup and actually can be pretty interesting. From all the forum discussions and stuff about ZvZ I thought it'd be the most boring matchup, but since the roach nerf from 2 armor -> 1 I've enjoyed most games. Lately I've been getting much longer games than before (which I see as a good thing) with macro playing a huuuuge role instead of the initial build order. I played for about five hours this morning eschewing sleep and am now totally screwed for today :D

For banelings, a good response is banelings of your own in the early game. speedling/baneling mirror fights are extremely micro intensive.. abuse everything you can because even one well placed bling can completely change the balance of play. If you see blings ahead of you, micro out one ling to attack at a time to make him waste his blings. Burrow is a great tool as well- if your push fails or if you just want to bait them, burrow some blings at a ramp, unburrow at an opportune time :)

Is it me or did they get rid of infesting terran buildings? I know, in SC1 it was generally useless in multiplayer, except to kick your opponent while he's down, but there's something terribly horrific yet irresistible (like passing a car accident, for some) about the idea of infesting another species and mutating them into mindless drones. The new Zerg infestor unit just spits out infested marines, perhaps a viable strategy, but there's no joy in that.

I wish they explored that more.. if not in multiplayer, then maybe the singleplayer campaign.
