Starcraft 2 Beta

Slowly creeping up the gold ladder. My APM is around ~45-50 average per game after 7ish games >.<

Anyone know if the SSAO is even noticeable? It's under shaders -> extreme. I took a couple of screenshots, can't tell the difference.

back before patch 9 i noticed i was running everything on ultra and noticed i was getting 50 ish frames i wanted 60+ constant so i changed shadows to meduim and i think shaders to high instead of ultra and that game me constant 60+ frames but when patch came out i dont get 60 frames constant anymore.

Oh lord, my roommate and I got placed in 2v2 gold. During one of our games I didn't even realize overlords can't detect anymore!

O em gee... what did they do to my precious zerg and my hydralisk :(

hey everyone who wants to play together pm me I am a noob at sc2
I just got my key today also, have not played sc in 12 years.

They messed up the Zerg a lot. They were my favorite rushing class and now, seems like Protoss are the rushing class now.

No, the recent patches just force more unit diversity than before. Earlier in the beta the Zerg could get away with single unit rushes (roach, muta, hydra, etc). Hell, they still can get away with that more than the Terran or Protoss, but at least having mixed unit composition in a Zerg army is more likely to happen than before.

In any case, rushing is still way easier with Zerg than with other races. A 6 pool or 9 pool build gets a crapload of zerglings out real fast. Its easily countered by any decent player, but its much quicker than something like a 2-gate zealot rush.

Hell, if you're 2v2 and your teammate is a zerg, both of you just 6 pool and rush the same guy. 12 zerglings going at the same base by the time a Protoss can get a single zealot out is pretty unstoppable.

Guys , is there any good tutorials for complete noobs like myself? Everything I have found so far seems intermediate, I need NOOB lol.

Go here and then search "tutorial": http://www.youtube.com/huskystarcraft

He has basic build order tutorial videos with the build orders in the description. They're basic and even though it is from a few patches ago, they should still be good. I know that the Protoss build order is a very balanced build which you can use to handle most situations.

Also, hotkey your buildings and learn to use the keyboard shortcuts, whether they are the default shortcuts or the grid layout. It is absolutely crucial that you use the keyboard instead of the graphic interface.

can we play custom maps on battlenet yet? I know they recently released the map editor, so I wonder if we were allowed to create maps more akin to the old style maps like big game hunters and play on them.

I've noticed running this game on High or Ultra is worth it whereas in most other games, it's not.

You literally do not see things happening. For example, the Ghost's nuke creates a giant explosion and then the ground is opened up and darkened but there is a different explosion and no ground effect on low.

There is a cool animation when the Changeling dies and the gooey Changeling comes out of the body and squirms and falls to the ground. But on low, all you see is it explode and then nothing.

This game might be the one that gets me to upgrade from my 8800gt.

Loving this so far. I'm about 1-1 win/loss in gold 2v2 league, but getting better.

Just had a very fun game where I rushed to void rays first, then got collosus covered by stalkers and sentry's.

3 Void rays can take out a hatchery in a couple of seconds at full power. Basically made the Zerg GG after I sneaked into his main.

Just made a zerg player rage quit after using Collosus + Void Rays. lol

I just got a code for the beta a few days ago , is there a skrim mode in this beta? I can't seem to find it , I wanna practice before going into the wild if possible.

Just had an epic TP vs ZP game.

Kinda funny when 2 hidden Stargates make 5 hidden carriers that pretty much wipe out the Protoss and make Z gg out.

Awesome.

Ghey ghey ghey. I just got an email brom Blizzard saying that my password has been changed. WTF? I didnt change my password! Of course I try to call and they said that the call volume was so large that I would have to call back later. This sucks.

I really suck at this game. Of all the online games I've played against people, I've won 2. I'm really bad at Strategy games. It's sad.

Set yourself as a New Player and use matchmkaing. You'll play with people at your own skill level.

Does anyone else think that match-making has got more difficult? In the top three slots in my gold league after winning 4 games in row last night, then I lost 3 in a row against really high ranking plats. I remember when I got into plat during the last patch I was matched against mid to lower end platinum players. It seems like they've ramped up the difficulty quite a bit for being in the top of your division.

Yep, definitely. That or just a larger pool of players (Gamestop/Amazon) etc. My stats got reset, so I don't really care where I land

I swear I think some people are clicking and doing random actions to get their APM artificially higher.

my APM is usually much lower than other peoples, in the 30-40 range averaged over the game, and people with 3-4 times that sometimes fall to me.

clicking for clickings sakes does not seem to matter. Now if you were doing something productive with that extra attention then it should pay off in spades. My attention and speed is limited, so those who can multi task like lightning will usually best me.

Yeah if you watch some videos, you'll see some people switch between a worker and their base repeatedly or click 10 times in the same location just to artificially boost their APM.

I dunno why.

when stuff starts to get really busy, it can help keep you in a rhythm to keep checking your base, army, etc. In the beginning there isn't much sense to it, other than boredom or 'warming up'.

Yeah I'm not talking about checking on your base or anything later in the game.

It could be "warming up", but based on what I have read from other forums, it's just inflating APM.

Playing some 2v2 random, its horrible. In plat div 5 and my toss partner builds only zealots the entire game off of one base, saying 'TRUST ME'...

we won ._.

+1.

After 22 games, I watched replays of games lasting past initial rush, I had an average APM of about 45 (was around 40 when I started to ~55 with last couple games).

The APM rockets to around 160-170 when I micro my army, but a lot of times when I simply macro it sits at 0-30 range.

I don't see the point in inflating APM.

I'm with you. I only got my key Thursday/Friday of last week so I've only been playing for like 3 days. I never played SC online very much back in the day. Mainly just lots of games with friends in a FFA or against AI. I did WC3 more online but was still pretty poor at the game. So I'm pretty much starting from scratch.

Right now I'm having a hard time getting my brain to wrap around all the different things you have to think about. I don't care if I get slaughtered because I really am a n00b at this but what gets frustrating is every time I do get slaughtered it's another strat that I haven't seen or even thought of. So now suddenly I have to re-examine everything I've learned and the strats I build to see if it offsets the new stuff. It's almost information overload at times.

The hardest thing is the timing of everything. Watching some of the replays I'm floored by the APM and how fluid they are. I'm sure as I commit more units and more hotkeys to memory my APM will improve with practice but still...it's another side of the game that you need to take into account.

As for the Beta itself...awesome. Game is going to be great. I do hate the feedback system though that Blizzard is using. Using a forum to voice your concerns about things like balancing is stupid. People immediately get trolled and called a n00b when they have valid concerns and feedback. Instead of being something useful the thread turns into a flame war.

Yea I'm with you guys never been that good at strategy games. I'm getting better though with SC2, as long as I stick to my Zerg semi rush tactic and get faster each time I'm starting to win more and more. But if my Zerg rush fails I get smoked lol
