stalker is look...dated...anyone agree?

my thought on this is that the graphics are good for sure, but i was expecting better. i also feel that i could have been optemized MUCH better.

that being said, i think that everyone that is saying look past the graphics is right here. with all the horsepower my computer has, i still play games from even the early 90's. why? because there were good! some better than most of the crap out there today.

IMO

Oblivion = OMG the bloom and brightness broke my eye balls. 12! 12 million.

Stalker = Dark and grity, perfect atmosphere

I disagree completely.
The game is very, very good all the way around. Has all the stuff of HL2 or FEAR and, IMHO sets a perfect atmosphere.
Plus, its flat out fun to play.:D

I love the thread title... should have been "ALL YOUR GRAPHICS ARE BELONG TO US!"

Stalker's visuals are decent. The only thing that really stands out, to me, are the shadows. I love them! Haven't seen shadows like that since Splinter Cell.

The player models in stalker are ulgy as hell.. the shadows and lighting are pretty decent. Half Life 2 : Episode one has better graphics than this game overall but Stalker has some nice effects.

see thats what im trying to say the player models and the weapon model are simply bad...when i have the starting pistol raised it looks like the texture was made in MS paint

I agree - STALKER sucks.. I bought it and gave it back next day. Didn't realise that it is so old in graphics. So what it has some new effects - all graphics were created 2 years ago, it wont be ebtter that new games.... I expected sth more than that...

A lot of the professional game reviews that I have read seem to agree with the OP.

Name two.

Ive read at least five that say this game is wicked good. None of the reviews I read said anything about "dated" graphics. (Gamespot,IGN,Eurogamer just off the top of my head.)

No matter what.....do you want pretty or great game play????

Quake does look nice,doesnt it.

The OP. Stalker has the best DX9 implementation to date, far superior to Farcry and HL2, if you can't see that then there's obviously something wrong with your system. The dynamic lighting is THE BEST I've ever seen in a game, better than Oblivion, better than *.FPS.

Even though this game will run on hardware released in 2003/2004 it won't look good at all, I've tried it on a P4 with Radeon 9800pro and while it's playable the GFX do look dated. On my current system, E6400 / 8800GTX the textures are crisp and very detailed and the amount of attention to detail is exceptionally high, think a normal HL2 level, now think 100x bigger and 100x more detailed.

Sure the grass sprites are not really detailed at all but the code that makes it sway in the wind sure makes it more believable.
+1

view the game the way it's meant to be viewed and put your gfx card in quality mode and things are unprecedented, i certainly have never seen shadows like this before and the attention to detail is amazing. I'm also aware these are subtle things and am glad that I see them but others don't bother. There really seem to be a group of people who take one look at the game (who knows on what settings and what hardware) and immediately dismiss it. This is the game of the year, no doubt.

ps. i look forward to the mods.

this game is strait out PIECE OF CRAP! :p
5 years + in the making and all they can come up with is a crapy engine and graphics.

That reminds me of the Red vs. Blue internet parody.

"I HATE YOUR MUSIC! I HATE EVERYTHING YOU LIKE!!!" :D

Not to mention the game even after the years of development WAS NOT READY FOR RELEASE! The game had a total of 68 bugs when it came out. And now the with the latest patch... DUNDUNDUN! All your save game are belong to GSC. As in the save games before the patch do not work with the patch. So you gotta start over again. This is just utter nonsense. I like the game story/atmosphere/visuals but I don't appreciate crappy coding/QC.

When I first started playing STALKER, I thought the same about the graphics. They looked outdated and alot worse then I would've expected from a game just released. But online I found some change to a config file that enabled HDR and killer bloom effects and the game is just fine now. Didn't decrease the performance at all either, wish I could find the link for you guys to try it out.

The gameplay in the game is good, but I was slightly disappointed because I was hoping the atmosphere would be something like the Fallout series of games (who remembers those?). Which I loved. They had a great combination of humor and post-apocalypse-ness. Those games were awesome. STALKERs been a great game thus far, just different than what I expected.

EDIT: Any another thing I hate about games, is when they put the action of a gun on the wrong side. Like in that pic in a post above mine, with the 1911, the actions on the right side not the left, wtf. I don't care if I can see the action cycling or not.

Hell yeah. I raised a big fuss over this over on Steam Forums way back when CS:S came out and pretty much all the kiddies told me to shadup, they like it backwards so they can see the shells. Every one knows that you would end up with brass down your shirt and burns on your arms if weapons were made that way. That's why lefties get little plastic brass deflectors for M16 rifles in the US Army.

The Battlefield games get it right though.

I have to agree with the OP the actual player models look very dated, most guns do as well. It seems almost as if they added the hdr/bloom/shadow effects after the fact to kind of make the game look on par with HL2/Farcry etc... That doesn't mean the game is a total bust though, there is enjoyment to be found in stalker. Compare the visuals to Graw 2 or gears of war for the 360 and you'll definitely think their dated.

You are mistaken... The gfx is very good - although unpolished(as some mentioned b4), the gameplay is awesome as well, in terms of more freedome character gets and more realism than bf2 hl2...
If I compare it to say FEAR or OBLIVION graphics, the only advantage fear gets is smooth edges, but I find that STALKER gfx puts you more into the atmosphere of the game and the real locations. Ok I agree they could have done a better job with gfx and couple of other things, but still IMO I'd rather play Stalker right now than FEAR.
I mean its up to u to decide, we all have different tastes for games etc, some like it some dont...
Although max gfx - does help even on 12x10res.
P.S. Ive never seen better shadows and lighting effects in no other game.., here they did quite a good job. The atmosphere, the environment seems more real to me than most other games, - in most games surfaces look a bit plasticish...
Also considering that Ukrainian developers didnt have much experience in games production, Id say its a good game.

I don't have the game, so this is a bit off-topic... but, how is the multiplayer in the game? I haven't heard too much about it, other than it has a bad netcode...

And from what I've seen about STALKER, it looks very nice, I think the gun/hand models could have used a bit more touching up, but other than that, it makes me drool.

I hope you dont mean that you returned the game because the graphics dissappointed you. If you did, then all I got to say is wow, just wow. Even returning the game because you couldnt get into the story and enjoy it, is pretty lame IMO but that is just me. But returning a game because the graphics sucked is a whole another story which I hope you didnt do.

Come on people!! gfx is not as bad as some ppl describing it... - I recon that gfx is well up to date(almost:)), but the gameplay is kinda more rewarding(if u know what i mean).
I mean that they did a good job in making a game like that, so in future we'll hopefully see more games that involve FPS+RPG+realism etc.
Im not saying its top-notch or anything, but its for sure an enjoyable game(imo). As was mentioned before: "If you judge a book by its cover..."
Probably its just that people have been waiting for something more, something better, something kinda revolutionary etc... considering it'd been in development for over 5 years, still Im not dissapointed.

WTF dude? I was talking about the damn weapon models being backwards as in the spent shell casings being ejected on the wrong side of the weapon, non of the jiberish you posted.

I don't know what's wrong with you guys that focus solely on graphics and complain a shitstorm about it. If you don't want to play the game because the graphics sucked ass, then don't play it. Sell the game or return it to the store. Especially the cuber and phinix guys are piercing my eyes and ears, making it bleed while Fruit Roll-Ups come out of my urethra I don't believe you guys. Graphics are this important to you? Whatever happened to the gameplay nowadays? Shit, I loved Final Fantasy 7. More people disagree with you on your own thread. So there goes your theory.

Graphicly Stalker Model wise is good, but not the best models by far but the lighting is exceptional. gameplay wise the single player is the best FPS ive played sure it has some problems some simple things could make it even better. but its a solid game and runs flawlessly for me on my x2 3800+ x850xt-pe and 2 gigs.

was definatly worth the money for this game which is more than i can say for alot of games ive played.

I'd say you are in for a lot of disappointment if you're buying games for graphics. It's like buying a book because it has a pretty cover.

No, that would be buying the box because of a nice graphic. Buying and playing a game because of it's graphics is more similar to wanting paper for the pages in your book that will not distract you from the text that is on it. If you're using weird rainbow colored paper you're going to have a hard time getting into the story... similar to poor graphics

Go to the graphics options, then press ADVANCED. And sort out contrast also etc.

Now shut up about the visuals.

You are right on the money. The AK-74 does eject shells on the right side of the weapon, not the left. As does the AK-47.

I think all automatic action rifles eject on the right side if they are side ejecting. These game developers think it looks better to do it wrong then right. Obviously weapons like the M2 .50 cal drop the shells out the bottom, but maybe we will see a game where the M2 shoots the spent casing straight up in the air :D

I remember back in the day on the firing range and Ft Leanardwood, the lefties that didn't have thier brass deflectors used to suffer. The spent casings often when down their shirt, hit them in the face, burnt their arms, etc. It sucks shooting assault rifles left handed.

Indeed it would.

I still love the fact that the game runs perfectly fine on my x800gto^2.

Sorry:) , didnt read your post thoroughly. Was just paying attention to treads title and ppl complaining about gfx .

Re-check the prescription for your glasses and look at the game again. From the beautiful fires to great textures, lots of detail and many polygons. Dynamic lights, dynamic shadows, this is so far the best looking game I have played.

Yeah it doesn't look as nice on 8800's which is probably why he thinks it looks dated. There's a driver/game issue that needs fixing.

nVIDIA has really made me regret buying these 8800's. Not that I'd be willing to part with them. Also giving my money over to AMD/ATi also doesn't really peek my interest especially considering they've got nothing to compete with that compares to nVIDIA 8800 GTX.

:( *sigh*

What to do..

yes because none of us saw the advanced tab right...i can assure you I have all the eye candy on and I still think it is sub par. Thats my opinion...you can tell me im wrong all you want but its just an opinion...opinions can never be right or wrong or at least thats what they taught me in school. Remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you think this game is "h4s UB3R pw3nage gfx" then more power to you, but I just dont think so.

i regret my purchase too...this almost reminds me of the geforce fx 5800 debacle....it was so hyped then they were released and there were all sorts of driver issues and power consumption/heat issues. Then 3 months later the 5900s came out and the difference was night and day.
