Skyrim impressions

Shit I'm doing it all wrong lol.. rerolling unless its possible to buy perk reallocation somewhere?

Pretty sure you can't, if you're not too far in the the game you might want to consider starting again, re-doing the start area once you're familiar with it is fairly trivial especially compared to the total length of the game.

I've re-rolled 3 times now, and I'm getting sick of the damn intro haha.

really? I find great satisfaction in driving an axe thru that bitch captain's face the first fight of the game. execute this

I have an archer with heavy armor, the inventory thing is a pita. But I find that I don't really need to sneak with the common enemies, and the bosses usually you can sneak and get a couple of good hits in with the bows and when they charge up to me i switch to my dual wield swords and dice him up.

This game's shaping up to be my favorite of all of them. I miss some of the complexity of Morrowind--and I *really* miss how easy it was to arrange items--but Skyrim's doing a lot of things right and aside from the damnable UI the immersion factor is very high.

The leveling system does a good job at keeping out of your way, unlike Morrowind and Oblivion. Scaling is there but seems to be pretty well done and the dragons don't (yet) feel too repetitive, though none of the shouts other than Fus Ro Dah are super useful to a sneaky mage type.

I'm around level 20 and getting overpowered, but I still have to be careful since I'm running around in robes and I still die to the odd encounter from time to time when I get too cocky. I also notice that some creatures that give me a good fight are only filling up common soul gems..

The Clavicus Vile quest still has me laughing. The description of him (on the loading screen) said something about him being known for making deals with mortals and the mortals soon come to regret it.

I had plenty of time to consider those words when that fucking dog nudged me for the thousandth time. I made sure to give the dog back because an spent eternity with it is the most vile punishment I can imagine. Pun intended.

Did the clavicus quest last night. It was a good one. So far 8Im enjoying skyrim more than oblivion, and mostly more than morrowind although I miss jumping everywhere to peg out acrobatics, and the levitation spell.

I hate how low you jump in skyrim and not having the ability to get in neat places because of it

Yea I actually miss leveling up acrobatics and being able to jump super high. For whatever reason, most of the time if you're right up against something you'll end up not really jumping at all. I find that annoying.

I miss building up athletics and acrobatics and stuff like that myself because it definitely would help here in some of the situations I've been in.

Q + swim into a corner. Q + sneak into a corner.

Jump up hill, jump down hill

Ugh.. I don't miss that. Levitation (and those few scrolls of mad jumping ability) was fun.

I'm approaching level 40. I can 1-shot most baddies with the bow. Just started the main questline last night. Might stop it to do the Companions and Stormcloak/Imperial lines.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Bethesda is removing features from the elder scrolls games?

Morrowind: Enemies are wearing what they have. You can make spells. You can fly. You can enchant items with any spell in the game.
Oblivion: Enemies have random loot. You can make spells. You can enchant items with any spell in the game.
Skyrim: Enemies sometimes wear what they have. You can enchant items, but only with certain spells.
No jumping! All enemies drop the same loot! Magic has been abolished! UI is now a mass of shapes and colors, no text! Console exclusive!

Damn, I'm level 24 or 25 and I have difficulty fighting; it's like the NPCs are getting stronger than I am or I'm not leveling myself properly. Do I really need to focus on one aspect to become powerful? I've been kinda spreading things out when I level up; spreading out between sneak, steal, heavy armor, destruction, restoration, maybe a 2-3 more.

Been trying to improve my smithing so I can create stronger weapons.

I cranked up the difficulty to Expert when I hit level 30.
Last night I fought and killed 3 dragons simultaneously. I'm still one-shotting trash mobs, it's kind of ridiculous at this point.

Probably going to push it up to Master today.

I miss the differences in races. My Argonian is just as strong, fast, and intelligent as a wood elf or an orc. IMO, it's a weak RPG but a strong adventure game with perks added.

I started out on Expert. The first few dungeons and quests were hard. At level 5 or so, I got an Orcish mace and have felt overpowered ever since that day. I'll occasionally be one shotted by something tough, but I think Master difficulty is a must for most encounters.

I have weird problems with the skill curve in this game.
Every now and then I come across a "boss" that kills me in two hits, even on normal difficulty. And I wipe the floor with other bosses.

There's one boss in particular during the College questline. The hardest boss in the entire game for me, so far. It literally took me an hour to kill him.

I like that. They may have even level scaled certain things a little too much, but there should be encounters that stand out as bleedingly hard depening on your character build.

I am loving what the modding community is doing, even without the toolset out yet. Check out one of the concepts for a redesigned UI:

Wow, you really haven't experienced much of the game yet. I think you'll find the other guild quests just as enthralling as the main story.
If you finished the main questline before doing the Companions you missed out on a little easter egg (on the final mission). NBD though.

Hmmm... I think I did Companions all the way through. They accepted me as one of their own already after I ran through a couple of quests. Never noticed an easter egg in reference to the Companions though.

That looks great. when is it out?
Still a concept at the moment. The user who created the mockup mentioned that Skyrim's UI is a glorified form of flash, and that you can do just about anything with it. I imagine it'll take another month or two before it's actually out. He's still cementing the concept.

DarN?

I know for sure DarN is on the case and he's going to get it done right.

His Oblivion UI looked awesome! (screens, I didn't play Oblivion). I hope there is an amazing coincidence and he gets it out the same week Skyrim is on 50% off!

The UI looks pretty terrible so now it seems like it's best just to wait till some mods are out, especially since I can only ever play a game once, if that.

Is there any reason(s) a pure archer should not use heavy armor?

Most people will tell you to go with light armor if you're an archer. BUT, there is a perk on the heavy armor side that eliminates the weight of your armor completely. You need to be at level 70 first, but once you're able to get that perk, light armor will have no advantage over heavy that I can see. You can wear full ebony armor and sneak around as though you're wearing nothing.

So it then becomes a question of whether you want to invest for the long term benefit of heavy over light...you'll be at an advanced stage of the game (at least half way through, I would guess) before you reach 70 unless you avoid the main quests completely.

I am curious about something...how valuable is a shield in this game? Everyone talks about using dual wield weapons, nobody seems to talk much about a shield in the left hand and a weapon/spell in the right. Anybody prefer it over dual wield weapons? Is this game like Dark Souls in terms of how helpful the shield is?

Much prefer shield. Often come across mages, or boss mages on my master difficulty where dual wield is just no good.

With shield up and blocking, 50% less magic damage or something isn't it? That and the fact that shield bash is brilliant. Tends to interrupt a cast, with perks it does nice damage. Definitely a lifesaver when I come up against tough mages which I so frequently do ;'(.

I play a Nord Paladin type character. Always using a 1 handed weapon (I'm sword specialized) with a shield. Slamming enemies with a shield to stagger them/interrupt and slow time is continuously satisfying. I do not have dual wielding on my character. I use alteration and restoration magic for supplementation.

Oh God haha, just reading the whole LAA issue with Skyrim, what a mess, Bethesda have serious egg on face right now.

1) Release game that CTD constantly due to running out of memory as artificial 32bit limitations still apply to people with 64bit OS's and more memory, despite correctly setting the LAA flag in the exe is a trivial update.
2) Pirates crack the game and it hits the scene
3) User fix Bethesdas shoddy programming for them by adding tools that modify the LAA flag in the executable to allow more memory to be loaded and stops the constant CTD.
4) Bethesda release stealth patch to add DRM to a game that's ALREADY been pirated and breaks the LAA fix for users.
5) Users are left with the option of putting up with CTD constantly or downloading illegal cracks and pirating the game.

Seriously how fucking stupid are these developers?

This game would be fun... instead of random crashes. Which is painful when you do a long open space chain of quests (like the legion ones) or partake in large battles.... only to see a crash at the end. But what I could expect from Bethesda... those guys would even make a Tetris bugged

Agree. I will go 1-2 hours, and then the game will just randomly close. No crash errors, no nothing - just gone. Luckily the auto-saves have been helping me out there, but it is damn annoying.

Three crashes so far in probably 60 hours of gameplay. But all three have been in the last 10 of those 60 hours.

Yeah, I haven't played that long but once I changed my sound settings so the game would load I hadn't had a single ctd until last night and since yesterday it CTDs about once every hour.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I have had zero crashes.

Fallout 3 and NV on the other hand.. Mother of god, was that a bitch to play!
