I'm looking for component recommendations. I have replied to all the questions from the sticky. See my notes below those replies for more details.
1) What will you be doing with this PC?
I need good, crisp, clear text display (for software development and technical writing work). I will be driving two 23" widescreen monitors via DVI.
This is a general purpose PC I also use for watching videos, browsing web and working with fairly large spreadsheets, etc.
I usually have about 30 - 40 tabs open in Firefox. Every day I hit the limits of my current PC in terms of speed and memory because of the way I use Firefox. My current PC has 4 GB of RAM and it scores pretty low on browser benchmarks. I'd like something that will be near the top of the browser benchmark charts and that won't run out of memory when I have a lot of tabs open.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$1000 approx. (No monitors or keyboard required.)
I have a little flexibility on the budget. If going with a more expensive part now means that I won't have to upgrade again quite as soon, then I can justify spending a little more now. I would like to have this PC last me for 4-5 years. The one I'm using now is about that old and it has served me well. I used good quality components when I built it and they have only become too slow/limited in the last year. I'd like to get that kind of service life out of this next build.
3) Where do you live?
USA
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
- quiet case
- mobo
- CPU
- silent CPU heatsink
- quiet case fans (or no fans?)
- video card
- SSD
- RAM
- power supply
- CD/DVD writer
- SD card reader
- sound (mobo built-in is probably OK)
- speakers (2 + 1 probably OK)
- blue tooth
- mobo extension (PCI card?) for enabling case access to all USB and other ports
- thermal compound?
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Two HP L2335 23" DVI LCD monitors (and cables). Keyboard and mouse (USB). Nothing else (except my desk and chair).
6) Will you be overclocking?
No.
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
I have two HP L2335 23" LCDs.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Within a week.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
Not sure about Crossfire or SLI.
Not sure about Intel vs. AMD.
Yes, firewire would be nice, but it is not absolutely required.
Dual GigE ports would be nice. One GigE is a must.
Plenty of USB ports is important - at least 6.
RAID is not required. I plan to use one SSD (30 GB or larger). Everything else will be accessed via NFS. (I have a 2 TB file server on GigE.)
See notes below for more thoughts.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) 64-bit. (I'll have to check my license key...)
In particular, I want to be sure suspend/resume and hibernate will work with Ubuntu. <--- MOST IMPORTANT (besides silence).
Summary:
completely silent (at least as quiet as my iMac 11,1 with an SSD -- it is not even possible to tell when my iMac is turned on or off if the screen is blank.)
fanless video card that will support dual DVI monitors at 1920 x 1200 (and more) each.
6 GB or more RAM
1 SSD (about 60 GB, such as OCZ Vertex II)
CD-RW / DVD-RW Dual Layer
Bluetooth
Dual GigE ports
lots of USB ports (6 or more would be good)
SD card reader
decent audio/sound card (high end not required)
no monitors
no keyboard
no mouse
no joystick
no accessories
bonus if it has an RS232 serial port
