Shuttle XPC SZ68R5

Try a pair in the color coordinated slot? not sure if that will help or not..

Roger that. Tried it, no dice.

However, I spy with my little eye a bent pin. Just one. Looks like it is bent to the side 15* or so. Crap.

My first unit also had the same problem. worked with Shuttle, to no avail. I had already tried just about everything, they had me reset the cmos, no help. Got an advance replacement from the egg.

Good luck!

Got mine in today, but after installing the 2600k, ssd and ram, it won't post. Monitor says no signal. Hdmi or dvi. Ram compatibility issue? No mobo speaker to help trouble shoot. Tried using one stick of ram in each slot.

G.skill f3-10666cl9q-16gbrl
Cl 9-9-9-24
4gb x 4
Ddr3-1333 pc3-10666

Is that compatible? Looking at shuttles site it sure seems like it should be. Help!

@coilz - I'll try to get a clear shot of the 1155 socket to show the bent pin. But getting a good shot on something that small and fine is like try to take a clear focused picture of a diamond!

@uunut - That was nice of the egg. Advance replacement would be nice, but I got mine from NCIX. Not sure they do that or not. But I did pay a bit extra for the rapid RMA.

Since it just one pin and it is only slightly bent (more like misaligned), I may grab a magnifying glass, flashlight and Xacto knife and see if I can tenderly coax it back into it's proper location. If even that doesn't work, I will RMA it and hope for a better unit.

I just picked two of these shuttle boxes after reading this thread and simon's review. Does anyone know the "trick" to get the ram running @ 1600MHz? I picked up two of http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233239 these kits and the system runs at 1333MHz whether I have 2 sticks (8gb) or 4 sticks (16gb) installed. I updated the BIOS as well but that didn't help, unfortunately.

On a side note, having already emailed Shuttle with no response after 1 week, what would be the next best way to get a replacement case cover for modding?

And I tell ya, I am anxious. I'm at work and that bent pin is taunting me, waiting for me to get home. I really hope I'm able to move that pin and get this thing up and running. That'd be super.

Grats on grabbing this case :) Offhand I do not know how to fine tune the RAM timings in the BIOS (I am on 1.05). I use G.Skill 1600 CL9s ... the BIOS recognizes them at 1600 but set to CL11 ... no worries though, this box is fast and satisfying on every level. I would not stress it. I would be more concerned about running them at 1.65V which is high, but 1.50V and under is no problem (I use 1.35V, but I believe they default to 1.50V).

Use the Shuttle webiste support link, which will email them. Describe your situation about wanting to purchase an additional case cover, you will get a reply in a day or two with a price and the shipping. I got a price on a replacement Optical/HDD tray since I cut mine to fit my water cooling, and after seeing uuncut's pictures, I did not need to. The shipping is a little high, but reasonable.

Just got off the phone with Shuttle sales actually. Got a price for the cover. Ouch.... $45 + $16s/h. So, that's $61 for the cover.... Huh.

Don't mess up or don't mod? At that price I could fab my own cover, or mod the one o have now and buy replacement only if needed. I don't think I'd mess up the first one, but what would happen if I had to rma? For example; if my mobo needs rma at some point, do I have to send the whole thing back or just the mobo?

Am guessing the whole thing or at least that's how it was back in the day. I remember going back and forth on modding mines (blowhole on the cover and cut out the mesh on the rear exhaust) as I was afraid of voiding the warranty. In the end I went for it :)

The original memory I bought for mine, would only show up as 1333, which is the systems noted capacity:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104239

However, the g.skill I bought for it showed up at 1600:

Unfortunately, it appears the Shuttle only looks at the EPP and not the XMP, which is where I believe they differ. However the Shuttle clocks them both at CL11 and there is no way to change it (yet) even with the bios mod (simon confirms). This was all mentioned near the beginning of this thread.

If you do it properly shouldn't need a cover replacement. On the upside at least they'll sell you a replacement if you do mess up.

I am thinking of moving over to one of these.....or the newer SZ77R5.

I recently built a tower PC.....and it looks great and all but I think that I went overboard and all I wanted was a gaming pc for my games that I currently have. ( the newest being Serious Sam BFE )

Now here is what I have now.

Corsair 650D
Asus P8Z68-V Pro/Gen 3
2500K
16GB Corsair Vengeance Red 1866MHz ( 4x4 )
Corsair H100
2 x Intel 520 120GB SSD
LG Bluray Burner ( not sure which one...has the shiny front with the lines on it )
XFX Double D 7970 925MHz

I love my system but I think that it is too "big" for me. I loved Shuttles ( I was an AVID Sudhian user back in the day before it got killed ) and am used to them but the last one I had was a K45 for a WHS Server before I gave that to a friend. ( was not impressed with WHS software itself )

Now I would like to get a SZ68R5 or a SZ77R5 and put what I can into it from my tower build and sell off the parts left over to fund the shuttle instead.

However noticed how I bolded the video card? I have a hunch that could be a problem. Also does the z68R5 have PCI express 3.0 ( with the new Ivy Bridge compatable BIOS ) or just plain 2.0?

uunut: Love what you did to your shuttle. Excellent work.

I think the only reason I was concerned wad in case of needing to rma. In which case I'll just buy one then if need be. Plus, I don't think I'll mess it up, I'm a fairly handy modder ;)

On an up note, I was able to bend the pin back into place and it's getting Win7 installed now. Happy days! :D

EDIT: And now I'm typing this from my operational SZ68R5. It was touch and go, but she pulled through.

Ok, cool. Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully Shuttle will provide a BIOS update for XMP support soon.

The double-d is a problem, really a no-go for this case IMHO.
Other than that it would be easy enough to swap the cpu, mem and ssds over. The mem would get gimped somewhat, at least on the SZ68 as it stands, maybe not so on the SZ77. That's a pretty nice build you got there, unless you are really cramped for space, I would stick with it.

Now, if you end up upgrading that to an IB in the near future, you could take that 2500k, some cheap ddr3 1600 and make a sz68r5 into a nice little second box.

Darn.

Will have to trade for a reference design 7970 then.

Oh and after hearing about the horror of the new Ivy Bridge "Heat" issues I doubt that I will be getting one......at least until they fix it.

Just a small update: I made a rough "prototype" for adding a 120mm blowhole/exhaust. The fan fits in there with just barely room to spare, but it's on top at the moment. I also increased the GPU intake as it was a little starved for fresh cool air. Now I just need to decide whether I'm going to cut up the case cover to fabricate one from scratch. Btw, temps are greatly improved and I highly recommend this to anyone concerned about their GPU temps (CPU temps were reduced only slightly). More details as they develop.

Thats an awesome idea there. You could make good money buying and modding covers for Shuttle owners!!!!

Wonder how the temps will be with a card board case cover :) Just paint that sucker black and you're set!

Haha, I should just do that. Save me a lot of time and trouble ;)

Actually the temps are pretty good. Check it out here.

Quick update following the new 201 bios.
I now have my 16GB ram at 1600MHz with proper timings.

And can run my 2600K at greatly increased speeds.
5.0GHz - seems stable (Prime95)
5.2GHz - Boots to windows and runs SuperPi 1M - not really tested anything else.

But 5GHz + in a shuttle - wow, just wow.

Temps seem well under control with the Asekek H20 cooler.

Thats it. Shuttle ordered.:D. There goes my savings.

What about temps? I hear that the temps on the chips under the PSU get VERY hot when overclocked.

I wish they would start making silver colored models again. I still have my old, silver, SB61G2 v3.

Edit:
Has Shuttle "fixed" the flimsy power button on the R5 chassis yet?

Just keeps getting sweeter! Gonna do the bios update today then.
Thanks Simon,

If they went with a brushed aluminum I could go for that. My cousin still uses my old silver one, forget the model, athlon xp 1800. The power button is still the same as far as I know, not great, but it works.

Simon,

Thanks for the update. This is exactly what I wanted to hear, regarding the RAM. But, are the timings correct (using the XMP profile)?

It is clear that the memory is still 'work in progress' I get good stability setting to XMP Profile, but at manual its not stable at all. Remember these settings are all hidden and not designed for public view. Shuttle have already told me that they are not ready.

Glad to hear they're actively working to improve stability. So, with the new BIOS, an xmp profile is now a selectable option? I'd test it myself but my boxes are at my office, unfortunately.

Even the XMP profile selection is hidden. It defaults to an Automatic setting, which seems ok and presume is seleting the XMP for my ram. Because I have modded the bios I can see and alter all the memory settings and much more besides :)

Oh right, I forgot that you mentioned modding eariler in the thread. I'm not looking to mod much in the way of RAM timings or even overclocking, I just want it to run my RAM at what it's rated for. Is it running @ 1600 with all DIMM slots filled?

Simon....would you be willing to share this modded BIOS of yours?

Also....temps of the heatsink under the PSU overclocked?

Simon....would you be willing to share this modded BIOS of yours?

Also....temps of the heatsink under the PSU overclocked?

Would be happy to share but before I do I want to do a couple of things...
1. Speak to shuttle about a few quirks with the 201 bios (non modded)... i have problems running some DOS applications and get lockups in the bios from time to time. I can't instal windows XP for example and this is a worry because if it locks while flashing then we are in trouble.

2. Let me create a cleaned up version. I have unlocked about 150 extra functions (most will not do anything) but there are actually only a few we need.

With regards temps...
another slight worry is that the reported CPU temps and power use in windows (i use real temp, but the values seem much the same in other applications) seem very low. my idle CPU temps are 16-25c and Prime95 at 5GHz is only just in the 70's with the fans not on full. I would say the CPU feels cool and the air comming out the back does not feel hotter than the temps would suggest, but it is a concern. With regards power, real temp only reports 97-102w running Prime95 at 5GHz and I know i was seeing 110w at 4.8GHz with the previous bios... so again something is odd.

The temp queries are probably a symptom of the IB changes, but again I want to speak to Shuttle.

The VRM area seems fine. I will get a temp probe in there in the next day or two. I currently have a 50mm fan on the VRM heatsink but as I say the area feels no hotter than before.

Finally... did a bit more playing and was able to boot to windows at 5.4GHz with all the voltages (except ram related) to the max, but could not run SuperPi. I can, however run Super-Pi at 5.3GHz - this is comparable to speed I can achieve with the CPU in a desktop P67 board.... so its basically the CPU's limit.
