Shuttle XPC SZ68R5

..or doing some serious case mods for air flow.
This is what I did. A 120mm Scythe PWM fan for exhaust. And opened up the side panel for the GPU. Also, my rear 92mm Scythe PWM fan is set to intake, rather than exhaust. This proved to be the magical configuration after quite a bit of testing. HUGE improvement on both CPU and GPU idle/load temps.

That rocks! You need to post how exactly you got that done and some more detailed pics of the case cover, inside and out.

Nice mod. I'll keep this in mind if I get the new SZ77R5. :)

Reply to the earlier poster with concern to noise, I got a XFX Radeon 6870 in mine, its noise is very noticeable. Its got one fan, not sure how it compares to the reference design blower fan.

Is anyone else finding the PSU fan a little loud during gaming? This may be due in part because I've quieted everything else down so much that only now does it stand out.

Regarding the PSU again, is there anyway I can undervolt the CPU or GPU to get my PSU not to work so hard? Because it really is crazy how loud the thing is during gaming. I don't want to mod that too.:) Okay, maybe I do a little :D

Bump. For those of you with this system and a hefty GPU, how is your PSU behaving? Is it winding up pretty loud while gaming? At the moment this is my loudest fan by leaps and bounds. The CPU fan is set to SMART and is always spinning slow, the top fan is set to MID and my GPU fans never go above 40%. But the PSU fan is spinning up to 300% ;) Bum power supply or nature of the beast?

My PSU has been very quiet with both an nVidia 570 GTX and the 680.
I have spoken to some others who described the PSU as loud when using a graphics card. All were using higher wattage GPU's like the GTX 580

I would think that the 680 would run about as hot as a 7970. Make sure that you get reference coolers for you get either.

I tested 202 bios on my machine. Still some anomalies, but this one looks like a keeper compared to very flaky/buggy 105 and 201 :

1) It now boots SeaTools DOS disk without a problem, keyboard/mouse don't freeze. I also didn't notice any freezes while in BIOS.

2) The XMP function is available without patching with AMIBCP. It runs my 32G memory correctly at 1866 now.

3) I think there is a problem with the current limit... new version throttled my 2700k to 85W max, it would only do about 3.6-3.7GHz on Prime95 at 85W limit. I suspect this is related to a default value for Ivy Bridge being used instead of Sandy Bridge. Unfortunately to get around this I had to edit the BIOS with AMIBCP and manually force the current limit to a higher value.

4) Long and short term power limits have been increased a small amount. It seems to allow my rig to run a little bit faster on PRIME95 though it still backs off from 4.6GHz (to about 4.4GHz) after awhile. Temps are close to 80C (case on) even with Asetek water cooler so it is fine with me.... whatever limits are in there are doing the right thing to keep the CPU from getting too hot/taking too much current which is a good thing.

5) Linux is still mis reporting the operating frequency. I think this is an issue with LInux acpi_cpufreq driver since CPU frequency is shown correctly in Win7. For some reason the linux driver doesn't like the new bios for getting the right overclocked frequency list... it just shows the stock list. It's only a reporting issue since turbostat shows the processor at the right 4.6GHz freq under load while /proc/cpuinfo and cpufreq-info both indicate 3.3GHz max.

202 eh? Wish I could test it but I returned my SHuttle....gonna exchange it for a 77R5 if possible.

can anyone confirm if the power connections on the geforce 670 come before the tray insert of the gen 5 shuttle case? The pcb is under 7 inches long but I don't have my shuttle in front of me at the moment to measure it.

Not sure where the power connections are exactly on that card, but I just measured and the distance from the rear panel of the case (the face the GPU mounts to) and to the start of the optical drive tray insert is 6.375". Any longer than 6.375" and you're under the tray.

crap...almost.
thanks for looking into that.
No problem.

But it's okay to have the power connectors under the tray. I do. Most do. It's just not a very nice fit. I may figure up a workaround to this.

It's just not a very nice fit

that's my problem, I'm OCD about this kind of thing.

right angle, 6-pin, power connectors. Get on it! :D

are there any modern video cards out now designed with the power connections facing the back of the card?

I'll have to hunt down the thread again, but OfficerMartinez modded 6+2 pin connectors in a similar way. Removed a lot of the plastic on the plugs and cut a little channel so the wires could bend at a tight 90* angle. He did this for getting clearance on a pretty short htpc case. Something to consider, but even as a mod junkie, I don't like dabbling with the electrical mods. I'm just a dumb ME, not an EE ;)

Edit: found the modded PCIE power connectors. Not exactly how I remembered, but close :)

Does anyone know if a Geforce GTX 670 will fit in this case?

Reference cooler basically means it has the fan blowing the air across and out the back. No fancy cooling to really speak of like some GPUs have two or three fans that blow air down and out every which way. That Gainward looks reference to me but I didn't study it in detail too hard. Nor did I look up how long it was.

i have a 2600k, and i was running BIOS 201, now 202. stock ICE. the shuttle keeps throttling me back to 3.7 no matter what i do. RAM looks find now with XMP option in 202. i increased cpu volt +50, set to 45, but 3.7 is as high as it will go. any suggestions?

You are limited by the BIOS, any of them, without modification. Go back through the thread, this is discussed among a few of us.

There are a couple of power settings under the multiplier adjustment.
Put those as high as they will go. Think its 1000 on one and 800'ish on the other.

That will help a bit. To get any more you need to unlock the Amps in the bios but this will only help for a short burst and then it will throttle again. Shuttle need to unlock both the wattage adjustments so they can go to 1000+, but my moaning is falling on deaf ears at the moment.

Bios 202 has a problem compared to 104 and 201, it appears to limit CPU to 85W instead of 95W. I found if I unlocked the "current limit" setting with AMIBCP, and increased it, that problem went away. After I did that my 2700k boosted back up to 4.4-4.6GHz range under Prime95 load on 202 with about 95W power (memory running at 1866). So far thats the only problem I have found with 202. IBT still backs it off to about 3.6GHz (it has always done that on all BIOS version) due to very high power load on Linpack stress; I'm guessing power would shoot up to 125W+ on IBT if not throttled back by the power governor, and risk damaging the VRM.

I'm in the process of installing the asetek 545LC in my SZ77R5. The "locking ring" circular plastic piece I have is broken on one side. Is this needed or can I just go ahead without it?

I ended up breaking mine like that too. I was able to wiggle it on and make it work. Asetek says it is optional. It will work without it.

Cool thanks for the info. I emailed the asetek support but I think I will just try to put it on broken or not use it instead of waiting for another one.

Hi guys

I'm completely stumped on this issue that I'm running into with my SZ68R5 and I was hoping someone out there might have run into a similar issue with their box.

my specs:

Intel i5-3570k
16GB GSkill DDR3-1600
Crucial m4 128GB x 2 (Raid 0)
Windows 7 64
Asetek 545LC Water cooling

I installed/setup everything with no issues originally. Went into the BIOS and swapped the video settings to recognize PCIe (from onboard). Then went ahead and added my ASUS GTX560. Seated correctly & input the two required power cables for the card, booted up to a blank screen... swapped the cable back to the integrated and it's still working... Also no new hardware recognized in Device Manager in windows.

So i went ahead and swapped out multiple (known working) PCIe cards to confirm that it wasn't the card. Still no video (yet integrated works fine). I contacted Shuttle and they figured it was the motherboard so I setup an RMA for a replacement board.

RMA'd the board to Shuttle and they sent a replacement... swapped everything over and again I have the same issue!!!

The only thing i can possibly think of is maybe the PSU is causing the issue or the BIOS isn't pushing enough to enable the PCIe (seems unlikely)? When the power connectors are attached all the fans, etc come on on the video card(s) so i'm not sure if that's it but I'm running out of ideas....

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Try this:
default (clear) the bios, do not set the video in the bios.
install the 560, and boot.

If/when the mobo recognizes the card it will use that instead of the onboard automatically.

Definitely puzzling.

Good Luck!

i'm wondering what port you have your monitor cable plugged into. Have you removed the monitor lead from the on board and used the same lead in the PCIe card? Sometimes if it cant see a monitor attatched it will revert to on board by default.

Second point. Is there anything odd about the way you are fitting the graphics card. The chassis connections can sometimes prevent the GPU dropping into the PCI-e slot properly.... make sure the GPU is in the socket well.

Third idea is the PCIe power supply connection. Is this connected properly? Do you have a basic GPU that does not need extra power that you can try? It is possible that the PSU is at fault.

Final thought. Check that the GPU is not shorting out at the back on to the hard drive bay.

If you can take some pics of the card in the machine we may be able to see something.

Good luck
Simon

Tried this without any luck just a blank screen until I swapped the DVI cable back to the onboard... this is frustrating
