School Punishing Students For Refusing RFID Tracking

Gotta get kids used to this kind of tracking technology early in life. Soon it will be, "well, the kids keep losing the cards, we're just going to implant the RFID chip in their hands now". Fast forward a few years and the chip in their hands is now a requirement for financial aid, emergency room visits and job applications.

Yes, they do. It's just that they are so busy teaching to the lowest common denominator that it makes Texas schools bad (among a few other things as well). There are so many Mexican kids here that schools spend time teaching those kids to pass TAKKS/TEAMS (insert standardized test of the year here) that they don't actually teach kids critical thinking, how to think on their own and actually learn.

And "beating their asses" won't make a lot of those kids show up, at least here in Texas. Again, alluding back to the apparent immigration problem here in America, those same Mexican parents are so busy working multiple jobs to keep afloat they don't have time to dedicate to keeping up with their children all the time. I don't think it's because they don't care, they just simply do not have the time, nor understanding sometimes, to do so.

not just texas, all state schools are like this. you have to blame parenting and much as anything else.

Lots of parents just use school as a day care and when they bring little johnny home, they just plop him in front of the TV and leave him till bed time.

In case of the immigrant kids, they often just end up with mom or dad at their job after cshool or working a job themselves because they have no where else to go.

either way, our school systems suck. You can't teach kids, you cant reprimand kids, you can't hurt their self esteem, you can't do shit with them except baby sit.

I have an ex that grew up in Austin, she would be 25 now. She learned about evolution when she read evolution of the species while she was in high school on her own. They were teaching about how god made the earth a couple thousand years ago. She privately asked her teacher about evolution and was told that she could not discuss that on school grounds. The teacher agreed to meet her at a coffee shop after school where they talked about it and she recommended some books for my ex to read to actually learn things.

Fuck Texas schools.

Because remember, every time you don't brainwash a young person into being christian and educationally behind the other first world countries, god rips the wings off an angel.

AHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!

More than a "couple thousand", more like 8-10k years.

And yeah, the earth itself is most likely a lot older than that.. even the Bible doesn't discredit that.

Where the fuck are you people pulling this shit out of your ass from?

I've lived in Houston, TX my whole life - the bunghole of immigration - and we went over evolution in full detail - never once talked or discussed Christianity, the bible, god created the earth, etc..

In the year 2525....

RFIDs will only keep track of the kids if they are in the building, right? Just have the teachers do roll call every period like they did when I was in school. At least you will know when they are not in class.

So your ex went to a Private Christian School? Thats her problem.

Did you ex attend a christian school? I could possibly see it happening in that circumstance... but what else would you expect in that case. I know in the public schools in the North Houston area at least they teach evolution...

So your ex went to a Private Christian School? Thats her problem.

Thought the same exact thing....blame her parents, not the school.

I just moved and my primary motivator was to put my two children in better schools. If your kids are not getting the desired education, the parents need to do something about it.

The public school system is a joke.

Yet another reason to home school. Shame that the person getting homeschooled will miss socializing but if that is the price that needs to be paid to be a free individual then so be it.

So..what's next laser etched bar codes on their wrists?

I would suggest that you will find as many home school environments that are just as shitty as public schools. Again this is where it comes to the parents to make the changes needed to get their children properly educated.

This is exactly how I see it. A more efficient and actionable system of calling the roll with the additional added benefit of campus-wide monitoring.

I'm surprised by many posters. I would think that here, the first answer to this idiocy would be.... yeah, tag my kid, right after you talk to my lawyers... Mr Smith and Mr Wesson.

Since it is easily breached as a system, its silly. Instead, given technology today... smart phones, ipads, etc... just take and track attendance as has been done for decades. Computers make it infinitely easier to do so, and inform parents of truancy on the spot.

Here, some idiot is likely getting a kick back from some company to have the school system buy some product.

As much as I hear that - and agree - I am told that if you put yourself into it, you can be challenged and you can get the challenge you so desire - but it comes with taking full honors class schedule, etc..

I say that because my girlfriend was. I was one of the lazy kids in standard classes that passed with a breeze of never studying and never caring :p

Yeah that is what I remember, a simple roll call. Not until I was in high school did we have a duty officer stationed on campus. Even then it was no big deal.

This kind of stuff is out of control and its a form of fear mongering.

I have a friend that picks his daughter up from elementary school who has to hold up a sign for his daughters teacher to see so that she can release her into his custody. To me this seems ridiculous, but this is just another example of the day we live in, with all the child kidnappings happening.

Its disturbing.

Picard: Computer, where is Commander Riker?
Computer: 'bleep bleep', He is on the bridge next to you
Picard: Computer, no he's not
Troy: oopsies, I took his com by mistake. He's on the hollodeck fishing.

Worked for me. Despite my parents working a lot of hours. If you as a parent, don't have time to make sure your kids are going to school, dont fucking have kids.

Then they shouldn't be popping out kids.

Dude, it did NOT work for you. You're a monkey god. I don't think we're supposed to turn out as monkey gods.

:D

So this RFID system sounds great. I bet you could totally track all of the hot chicks and cheerleaders.

RFID tags are cheap and it saves a lot of time as you don't have to take attendance.

Unlike attendance, the scanners can also tell if you have kids that show up in the morning and bail at lunch time, or even just try to bail for a few hours.

Yes, you can do the same with enough man-power, but you have technology available to save money and maximize the utility of the resources you have.

If the kids were required to wear them or were somehow tracked OUTSIDE of school, there would be a case, but in school... pfft! Nonsense!

And this is coming from a Libertarian.

I'm a [l]ibertarian as well.

My teachers took 15 seconds to do a quick attendance check without ever even doing a roll call. The man power is the teacher in front of the classroom.

All this does is give (state) government subsidies to what will likely be one or two national companies pushing more and more advancements in tracking.

Our education in this country has skyrocketed down since the Department of Education was created, we didn't have tracking back then yet somehow our schools created some of the greatest minds in history.

This doesn't solve anything, and creates yet another worthless government sponsored market.

Somebody needs to teach all the kids at this school how to microwave their ID badges for a few seconds....

There are major problems with this. First of all the state pays the school based on the attendance the school takes. When a teacher takes attendance, they look to see who didn't show up. So it's very rare that they would mark someone absent that is actually there. The mistake they might actually do however, is mark someone there that actually is not there, because they're lazy or a friend in the class is taking attendance. This more common error would actually raise the Average Daily Attendance (ADA.) So if they make a system that better tracks attendance it will lower ADA and therefore cost the schools money.

But now that we're talking about friends taking attendance, what's to stop Billy from putting Johnny's RFID card in his backpack (either by accident or on purpose?) If anything this takes accountability out of the teachers hand and makes it easier to skip school.

RFID will not get a kid ditching class to show up (and increase ADA) since if the school is registering this student as ditching (aka the lower ADA) they already know who these kids are (regular attendance.)

This is a waste of taxpayer money on top of being a useless intrusion into a students freedom (I'm gonna stop calling it privacy) walking home. This is exactly like DRM in that at best it will punish honest people and at worst (card in buddy's pocket) will make skipping class easier.

Well why stop with tagging students? We can tag people with a GPS transponder to make sure that you aren't committing any crimes. Let's also slap a transponder on your vehicle so that we can track where you go and charge you by miles driven (and this is actually vetted in reality as the oligarchs that run my state have seriously considered this to which I will, of course, refuse to comply with).

Kids are just as human as adults and have the same rights. Treating them like animals is dehumanizing and degrading and constitutes child abuse.

Yep, because supporting kids in rulebreaking never has any negative impacts down the line.

Yes, because "Rules" set by other flawed human beings is always the best course of action. Clearly this is for you:

Never said that, but telling your kids to only follow rules they agree with is one of the reasons are schools and cities are filled with so many delinquents.

Other schools are requiring it out of school. In the article from the huffington post they talk about another schoool with a similiar implementation that requires tracking outside of school.

Each school day, the delinquent students get an automated "wake-up" phone call reminding them that they need to get to school on time. In addition, five times a day they are required to enter a code that tracks their locations: as they leave for school, when they arrive at school, at lunchtime, when they leave school and at 8pm. These students are also assigned an adult "coach" who calls them at least three times a week to see how they are doing and help them find effective ways to make sure they get to school.

Those aren't very strict rules to live by, and are necessary for societies to be functional entities.

Break it down:
1) If you don't get a job, you still need food, water, shelter, and that means you're mooching off your neighbors. $*%& you, get a job!
2) Fashion is very broad, and last I checked there are no fashion police pulling you over for clashing colors. Just don't walk into a five star restaurant wearing flip flops, a thong, and nipple clamps and try not to act too freakishly.
3) Saving for old age is about personal responsibility, again so you're not mooching off of me, and laws are generally in place for a reason (with some exceptions of course).

If you can't follow those very broadstroke guidelines then repeat after me:
I'm a useless waste of skin HIPPY that will mooch off of society like a parasite; aka "free".

As lame yet harmless as I think this is, it's really hard for me to give a fuck when she references the "mark of the beast" as justification to wear a RFID tag.

LOL...just LOL...

It's a shame so many people here can't see past your forceful and unequivocating language, because you're absolutely correct. After all of the flak you received earlier in the thread, you made my day with this:

Oh snap.

Kids are just as human as adults and have the same rights. Treating them like animals is dehumanizing and degrading and constitutes child abuse.

Cool... since they have the same rights they should have the same responsibilities. That means the school shouldn't be responsible to watching/taking care of them and if someone grabs the kid from the playground it is their own fault and not a lack of security on the school's part, right?

Good to know my 6 year old has the right to vote also...

Kids are not adults.. and are not treated to all the same rights and priviledges that adults are for one reason, they don't have the mental capacity and experience to make the same decisions that come with those rights.

I guess I look at this from a different perspecitve having young children. When they are home, they can play at the neighbors house but are expected to tell me if they are going anywhere else. I've also had a couple "discussions" with the neighbor that my child does not get to roam the neighborhood even if they don't care about watching their's.

As to taking attendance, yes teachers can do that. My wife has actually helped out in our daughter's classroom, so she knows how the system works (at least in our child's school).
1) The kids come in and turn in their homework folders (1st grade)
2) The teacher goes through each folder for 25 students, pulling out their nightly homework, reading notes from parents, and taking attendance (verifies visually the student who's folder she is opening is there). Kids are doing "quiet work" at this point.
3) Class actually starts and the attendance isn't turned in until lunch

After that, all the attendance is entered manually by the school and guess when I finally get a phone call saying my child wasn't there that day since she was home sick with me? 4:00 PM. Good to know that if she had been picked up by a stranger or something, the entire day went by without my knowing....

Now for high school, I remember what all I got away with when I was a kid, and I was one of the "good kids". Sneaking off campus for lunch. Taking longer than necessary to get back from my concurrent classes at the local college. Jogging down to the local pond to sit around and goof off when I was supposed to be practicing for cross-country. Did anything bad happen? Nope. Could it have? Oh hell yes. And if it had I'm sure my parents would have blamed the school just like everyone else in this country would have, because it is the school's responsibility to keep the children safe while they are under their care.

To anyone saying "schools don't need to monitor the children", I want to know who you find at fault if your child disappeared during the school day? Or would you just shrug your shoulders and say "nah, it wasn't your job to watch them. I hope they will be okay."

Other schools are requiring it out of school. In the article from the huffington post they talk about another schoool with a similiar implementation that requires tracking outside of school.
That goes back to kids not really having any rights whatsoever though, save basic human rights. They aren't people, they are subadults, and that's why they also aren't really held accountable for their actions as an adult either.

From what I understand there, they are tracking problem kids, and I assume it would be with parental approval... and if not the parents can pull the kids out of the school of course. If the parents approve, then they have all the consent they need.

I lived in Texas until last year, and would like to point out a couple things. Note that our experience was with one district, so YMMV:
1) state funding of school districts is based heavily on attendance. That sounds reasonable, but it isn't perfect. If a student is acing all his/her classes, I don't see a reason for the school district to worry about his/her attendance. See 1c below.
1a) In our school district, attendance was taken at 10:00. If your kid had a doctor's appointment and missed attendance, they were marked absent, even if they attended the rest of the day.
1b) Our school district, all absences were considered unexcused unless the kid had a doctor's note. A parent's note is insufficient. So if your kid gets the 24-hour flu and you keep him home from school, it counts as unexcused.
1c) Exceeding 5 unexcused absences can earn you a visit from the truant officer and a $500 fine. That's right, the school will fine you if your kid is gone for more than 5 days in a semester. Even if your kid is getting straight A's and doesn't actually need to be there.

2)
Yes, they do. It's just that they are so busy teaching to the lowest common denominator that it makes Texas schools bad (among a few other things as well). There are so many Mexican kids here that schools spend time teaching those kids to pass TAKKS/TEAMS (insert standardized test of the year here) that they don't actually teach kids critical thinking, how to think on their own and actually learn.
Actually, the narrative that Texas schools are terrible is pretty much a myth, and is only true if you look at the overall aggregate statistics. In reality, Texas schools (overall ranked 47th) are doing better across the board than Wisconsin schools (ranked #2). Short version: white students perform better than black and hispanic students, on average. Texas has a lot more blacks and hispanics (as a percentage of student population) than Wisconsin does, so it tweaks the average. In fact, white students in Texas outperform white students in Wisconsin, black students in Texas outperform black students in Wisconsin, and hispanic students in Texas outperform hispanic students in Wisconsin.

Here, some idiot is likely getting a kick back from some company to have the school system buy some product.
This is my concern as well. Half a million to install a bunch of RFID readers, plus $130k/year in "maintenance," just screams of kickbacks. The only "maintenance" I can think of is the printing of new cards each year for the incoming class, and occasionally replacing an RFID reader.

As to the issues of privacy, "don't track me, bro!", etc, I don't have strong feelings one way or another. I can see the convenience--teachers don't have to take attendance, nobody has to worry about collecting and compiling that information, etc. It's not clear whether the students have to "clock in" when arriving at school, or whether they just check into their classes that way. Barring a student's entry into the cafeteria or the library if they don't have a card seems silly and stupid.

I'd say this: let the kids leave their id cards in their lockers at the end of the day, and pick them up when they arrive in the morning. And only use the RFID to check into classes. That way you avoid the whole privacy issue, but still get the convenience of super-easy attendance.

You sound like a helicopter parent.

Maybe we should just keep em radio-collar tagged and locked in a prison surrounded by guards and airbags for every possible contingency. Life isn't certain, and how you treat kids when they are young will determine what kind of adults they will be. For every kid who gets kidnapped by a stranger, there's a 1,000,000 other ones who learned a bit of independence and self-control and turned into decent adults. How the hell previous generations survived at all without big brother firmly embedded up our is a giant mystery to me.

If that is the case, then it would be the parent's problem. At that, the school shouldn't be doing anything else.

- Can't read the article, since I am at work.

RFIDs will only keep track of the kids if they are in the building, right? Just have the teachers do roll call every period like they did when I was in school. At least you will know when they are not in class.

RFID will only keep track of kids that are near RFID scanners. Now those metal detector looking things that many schools now have as you walk on campus essentially will record who's in the school. This is a public school so they're not going to pony up with multiple scanners that analyzes time for signal to reach it to triangulate where kids are or anything. Hell if you look at the article it even looks like it's a near field RFID devise that you need to touch your card again.

RFID often gets a bad press simply due to it's nature, kind of like the word "nuclear" is a horrible word! Fact of the matter is if you get an MRI you're getting a NUCLEAR magnetic resonance (NMR) however they changed the naming because of the stigmata.

Its hard to judge how "evil" this really is simply from this story, but considering the punishment is not voting for homecoming king/queen I'm guessing this is not as invasive as this little kids make it out to be.

How the hell previous generations survived at all without big brother firmly embedded up our is a giant mystery to me.

It will all make sense someday, when you learn that we live in a computer simulation that was started just last week with randomly seeded "memories." This allows for impossible histories, such as worlds "before" Big Brother, as if such a thing were ever practical. ;) Clever skeptics might question where the computer simulation came from in the first place, and there were indeed other societies, but they were all created by God in medias res.
