RTX 4080: Countdown To Second-Best™

Microcenter has more today than it did at close last night. Will tally the numbers after close again today. Restock? Returns? Dunno.

The only one I see siting around is the ventus. Even if one of those was right in front of me I would not touch it. IMO they should not even use the ventus line on high end cards.

Why? You don't want a reference board with a decent cooler on it, and would rather pay nearly 4090 prices for something that isn't as fast as a 4090 anyways?

These cards already run so cool, that the base-tier coolers from every manufacturer on the reference board is way more than sufficient.

Would say that it would be just as foolish to buy a 7900 XTX as it would a 4080, for reasons well stated earlier in this thread. They jacked up the gaming tier of cards to $1000-1200 and they should sit, unpurchased. The best values are going to be (1) the 3xxx series cards at the gaming $5-700 tier and (2) the 4090 at the enthusiast tier until further notice tbh.

If you think about it, in a new world order where they simply price cards based on the % of performance, then that makes the 4090 the best value simply because its the highest performing card and that means you maximized your performance per dollar. And that's the definition of value.

4090 is not really the best performance for dollar though and its for those that don't really care about that factor and want the best. I mean you have to give credit to AMD on 7900xtx that given inflation they kept that cheaper than 6950xt msrp and same as 6900xt.

Maybe I am millennial boomer but I give credit to AMD when AMD launched the HD4870 at $299 that competed with the $650 GTX 280. This forced Nvidia to immediately reduce price on its GTX 280 down to $499, and Nvidia's card was still a poor value. AMD could have easily launched the HD4870 at $449 but instead launched it at a screaming value and it was so good - old folks like me remember it 14 years later. if the 7900XTX was launching at $699, the price of the 3080 MSRP at launch, then I would applaud that. Unless I see it within 10-15% of performance of a 4090 (as it was back with the HD4870 launch), its not a value.

Lot has changed though. Smaller process, inflation, more cost to produce silicon etc. So idk if you are ever going to see x900 series at $699.99. I do think they will drop the 7900xt to $799.99 eventually as the RDNA2 inventory phases out.

Only a fool would buy these with the new Radeon cards right around the corner.

On paper so far 7900 XTX looks like it could be a price-perf monster at $999, but availability will be the question. I suspect they'll be unobtanium at $999 - especially AMD reference models sold on AMD.com - and what will remain will be the the AIB variants at or near 4080 pricepoints. And any price-perf disparity between 7900XTX and 4080 will be slurped up and equalized by secondary markets (scalpers).

So unless someone has time to camp Discord/Twitter/F5 all day for an alert on a rare $999 7900XTX, if they want one sooner than a few months after launch then they'll probably be looking at $1200-1500 for an instock AIB variant.

I'd agree, but then MSRP is mostly a magical abstract number that really only becomes meaningful if and when you can obtain one at that price. And that's not to diminish AMD's offering - if anything it will be too excellent an offering that's too high in demand.

Pricing on these is ridiculous in my country, basically almost same as 3090 launch price. The cheapest one costs aprox. 1450 USD + sales tax which is more than twice what I paid for one of the highest clocking and among the more expensive 3080 cards at launch in 2020.

I get that saving money is saving money, but if you have the $ to drop on an OEM version of a 4080, you're damn close to being able to buy a 4090 FE. FE retail prices are one thing, but OEM prices are something else entirely. Unless you're on a time crunch or just flat-out don't want to play the F5/stock alert game, it seems worthwhile to hold out.
The problem with that is finding a 4090 FE.

Well who knows, you could obtain a 4080 at msrp pretty easily this time around.

At this point, it's better to just buy one generation behind, instead of giving in to scaplers.

You can get a 3090 or 3080Ti at decent price points, and still have a beastly card. Or wait a year for and pick up a 4090 at more reasonable prices.

I keep seeing people say this, but while that was true a month ago, if you want new the stock is fairly diminished, and most are being sold by scalpers still for more than a 4080.

Mchart you are correct. It is a hundred or two higher than just a couple of weeks ago. So it's down to used 3000 series now, or new 4080.

It's the economy stupid at Walmart we had one person show up for Black Friday presale this past week.

I might pick one up yet because it's better than last gen the 4070 Ti would be kinda of a waste. Either want a Gigabyte Asus or MSI I like how they have stockpiles of 4080s at Microcenter but just Gigabyte.

Like I said, at least with this card a normal human being can go online or walk into a retail store and actually pick one up. Is it a good value? Well, that depends on what you're currently running. However, there is something to be said that Mr. Arnold Average with a real job can walk into a store and just buy one, without having to play the nowinstock bot game.

I would have to drive to a different state to get one not sure if I want to do that.
Prob need a GPS. 350 miles 4.5 hour drive.

That Strix is $50 less than the MSRP of a 4090. I know we've talked about it to death, but it's still breathtaking to actually SEE it for sale. That makes zero zip nada NO sense to buy. Even the ASUS TUF is $200 over MSRP. The Zotac would be the one, but still... $1200. The "worst" (is there even such as thing?) 4090 will demolish all these cards.

But yeah If I was really going to overpay for these I'd stick with the $1200 card no matter what the brand. Not one cent more.

This generation in particular - You gain almost nothing over the base cooler any AIB is putting on these cards, and any factory OC is easily achieved.

Personal opinion, but I think the FE cooler is leagues better than any AIB this generation. Nvidia certainly put in a lot of work in making it amazing.
The base coolers from like MSI, etc do a better job just due to the immense size. However, the nvidia cooler is amazing for sure.

There is a reason why EVGA left because Nvidia is basically directly competing with the AIBs.

The FE fits in your case 😜
Ha! I kind of forgot about the reviews showing the 4090 card size because of the coolers, which is the same cooler on all(?) AIB's 4080s. So yes, a smaller Founder's cooler is a big big deal with these even if you have a fairly good size case.

Guess people aren't running out to buy them, that's probably good news for consumers long term. Also, it's officially holiday season, this is the time of year they should be selling the most. So it's a recently launched product and it's holiday season... yeah.

Microcenter Thursday Vs Close Sunday. 1781 vs 1227
Good stuff to see. Hopefully it helps toward an eventual price correction.

love to see finally people voting for their wallet. Companies thought they could scalp themselves but finally seeing this sit there brand new during holiday season doesn't look good. Zotac has had their online store drop available since last night lmao. I do see a price cut coming in Jan, they will probably roll with it during holiday season and drop the prices may be January when they announce 4070.

There are 2 4080s on my local fbm.
Selling for $100 over their price +taxes. Not exactly a huge profit margin.

Yeah I'm going to wait for a price cut I don't want to PC game for 1,600-1,200 for two years if that was my Steam Balance I would be set for 10 years worth of New Releases. Also like all of the cards are ugly anyways with EVGA out of the scene all your paying for is the FPS in games and not the visual look of the product.

I wonder how many of those sales are wannabe scalpers who bought with the intention of flipping a couple of cards but will return them unopened to the store in 30 days if they don't sell?

I got a feeling a lot of the online sales might reflect this. Going to be interesting to feel that out over the next couple of weeks.

It's all Chinese Bots like a Chinese Dystopia where they buy out all the tech like Johnny Neumonic. Except the tech is isn't very valuable.
