RTX 3xxx performance speculation

I think the 3090 FE is actually better than the 3090 XC3's. Cooling & PCB.
The FE might beat several of the entry level AIB cards, tbh.

I believe the FE is as good as or beats all cards priced at MSRP except for the ASUS TUF cards.
 
with the 3080 20GB cards unofficially launching in December it makes everything even more annoying...ideally that would be the best card to get but that means waiting an additional 2 months...

Best bet if you want a card now and potentially a 20GB later is to get an EVGA and step up to the 20GB. That is if they’ll allow/include that step up, sometimes they won’t allow step ups within the same model.

But that is your best bet aside from selling your used 3080 once the 20GB variants come out. Might lose a bit of cash doing so if supply recovers by then.

I think you can also make a good argument for the MSI 3090 Gaming X Trio. Similar performance to the TUF when fans are same speed, stock bios quiet fans, only like $50 more than FE, looks nice (better than TUF imo) with decent RGB built-in, bit faster in speed than FE.

Some other nice 3090 options but they are all $200+ more than FE.

$900 max for the 20GB? If they even start that low I’d guess the majority of AIB 20GB variants will still be $1000+.

Unless AMD blows nvidia out of the water (doubtful) I'm going to guess the majority of available 20GB cards will be more like $949-$999

IMO at that price a 3090 under $1600 is a better deal b/c its extra cores will impact speed a lot more than RAM will. Or a 3080 under $800.

Looking at the various brands I think MSI Gaming X Trio 3080/3090 has the best price to performance ratio (at msrp), probably best to get one of those than shell out for 3080 extra RAM that won't do much for the lifetime of the card.

I expect them to start out at $1000 price point. I would be ok if it ends up being more like a Super card with a bump of performance nearing the 3090 but it will likely just be a 3080 with more ram.

$1000+ will almost certainly be the going price for 95% of people. Pro tip: when nV (or AIBs) finally announce "MSRP" for 3080 20GB, remember that's only a marketing number now.
 
I don't expect the 20GB models to run any faster unless the board has a greater power allowance, the chip has better binning, or the card has better cooling.

2GB stacks of GDDR6x aren't out yet (as far as any of us know), so Nvidia and/or the board partners need to put chips on the back like with the 3090. Each of those 10 extra chips will draw a small amount of power that will now not be available to the GPU. We all do know, however, that the 3090 has high baser power rating along with bios allowances for greater power draw in addition to generally having better binning and cooling. Despite that, the 3090 doesn't exactly clock higher.

Without having more power running to the 20GB model (and/or much better binning), it would not be surprising for it to clock in 2-3% lower due to the limitations imposed by the boost algorithm. On the cost side of things, Nvidia is definitely going to be constrained by the price premium for 6x chips so it all comes down to Big Navi or Biggest Nvai's real world performance.

I just beat BF5 on Ultra settings, 1440p on the 3080. For the first 2 war stories I played with RTX on Ultra. The remaining 2 war stories, I played with RTX off. Both were smooth as silk. But both also looked the same... and playing with RTX off, I wasn't even sure what I was missing.

Ray tracing doesn't add anything new, it potentially makes lighting conditions look more realistic. The fine details in shading and halo effects takes tremendous computational effort, but it doesn't make people look more like people, or plants look more like plats, or add fine details to furniture and walls, instead ray tracing can make things look more real because most lighting in real life is not generated by smooth, omnipresent, diffuse, overhead light sources that evenly cast light straight down.
 
From what I’ve seen the most noticeable RT improvement are reflections. Everything else is a minimal to moderate increase in image quality.

I think they will justify the $1k price point by adding SLI capability for the below most typical use cases

So it would scale like this:
$699 = 3080 10gb gaming only
$999 = 3080 20gb gaming + productivity
$1499 = 3090 24gb gaming + productivity
$1999 = 3080 20gb SLI productivity only
$2999 = 3090 24gb SLI productivity only

What happens if the 10GB model stays $700-$800 but you can't buy, but the 20GB model costs $1000-$1200 with stock readily available? In that scenario, you can bet Nvidia will have a whole lot of lot selling at a significantly higher MSRP.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when this card launches. When the 3080 got announced, everyone bitched and moaned that 10GB wasn't enough VRAM. My money is on everyone continuing to bitch and moan when they get the 20GB they want, but it costs more than they think it should.

Well if that happens then the Ampere launch was pure bullshit and the conspiracy theorists were right. The consequences depend on what AMD does with Navi 2x. If it's any good Nvidia will lose a lot of goodwill. If it's not then Nvidia will get away with it.

One thing I know for sure is Nvidia won't easily surrender market share. So if Navi is strong then Nvidia needs those $700 cards to stay in stock.

Damn! Is it really only 30%? I thought it was in the 50%/60% range... I guess I need to review this thread again, I obviously missed something.

Either way, I've got a launch 1080 so the gains are going to be big for me no matter what...
 
Looks like they are going to 7nm TSMC next year. Frankly I am not impressed by 4K frame rates on 3080 and 4K tv and monitor adoption is skyrocketing.

I am hanging onto my 1080ti until there is something that totally blows the doors off of games at 4K. I’m building for Battlefield 6 and GTA 6 in 4K with RTX, not some Cyberpunk game.

You definitely do.
It was never claimed that 3080 is 50-60% wasted than 2080Ti, Nvidia talked about 2080 (non-S). It is definitely some 50-80% faster than 2080.

Anyway if Nvidia is going to 7nm TMSC next year, I might just hold on to my 2080Ti.
 
I'm curious as to what they will use the 7nm for. Refresh at the high end market would blow up their product stack and piss off 3080/3090 owners after making them wait for cards, but it's not out of the question. Maybe they will use it for the smaller cards then refresh high end late 2021 or early 2022?

I could see a 3080ti mid 2021 on 7nm TSMC but I'm still not sure how they fit it between the 3080 and 3090 without killing one or the other. Not sure what a 12GB 3080 TI that's faster than a 3090 would sell for.

Edit: I guess if Big Navi is close to a 3090 they could go all out and make a 7nm 3090 TI to stay on top, that would be an expensive card I assume.
 
Yeah. 7nm is non-news to a certain degree. Of course 3080 Ti and even 3090 Ti will exist. They are just arming the chamber to keep annihilating AMD and keep selling cards to those that have to have the best.
 
Would it not be more likely 7nm Samsung vice TSMC? For a Super lineup? At this point who cares and why make a decision based on nothing? If one needs a card for whatever reason and can afford it -> go for it.

Awk!! I've been waiting about six months now for the 3000 series, and now I "should" wait another six months!?!! :mad: No bleeping way. I need to upgrade from a really ancient GTX 660Ti that really drags ass with Lightroom and Photoshop.

My only decision is to pick either a 3070 or a as yet unannounced 3060. I tend to "buy and hold" components through multiple motherboard/CPU/RAM upgrade cycles, so I will probably get the 3070. Topaz relies very heavily on the GPU for their Denoise AI program and even Adobe is using the GPU more and more with Lightroom Classic. Topaz Denoise isn't exactly cheap, but the results are very impressive.

I have a 2080Ti and it still drags ass in Lightroom.
It's a tiny bit faster than my old integrated card (yes, I have GPU acceleration activated).
Lighroom optimization is shit. Video cards do barely anything.

Yeah GPUs aren't optimized at all in Lightroom. You're better off going with a better CPU and whatnot. It's not the GPU that's dragging ... it's Adobe pisspoor GPU support. They need to get it together.
