are all the Gigabyte 3080 cards affected by this or only the Gaming OC model?

seems like every day a new issue pops up with the Ampere cards
The thread had both eagle and gaming oc cards affected by it. You also have to factor in the Dumbass effect. They may not have enough dumbass protection built into them. I can see some failures from people forcing them.

I found Death Stranding to look way nicer with DLSS. Without there is aliasing galore on Sam's gear, etc.

Maybe depends on the resolution you play.

so only the basic MSRP $699 models...hopefully the Aorus 3080 Master is good to go

I've been meaning to make a video. IMO, places like digital foundry curiously avoided some of the negative aspects. The only negative they cited, is that objects without motion vectors programmed into the engine, show a blur trail with DLSS. In the case of Death Stranding, it works in its favor. As this visual artifact actually resembles other visual effects in the game.

In a nut shell: DLSS in death stranding results in amazing quality anti-aliasing. Which means better model detail and stability, during motion. And the general impression, is a higher resolution image, indeed. Not just an upscale.

However, once you pay attention to other aspects, some clear issues arise.

1. The overall impression reminds me of H.264 compression. There is a certain character imparted to the overall image, which makes it look unlike when you actually directly render the game. And I don't think the vegetation fairs particularly well, in this regard. And its everywhere. it lowers the visual depth of the image and I don't like the way it looks. Similarly, distant objects can lose some of their impression of depth.

2. it also tends to blunt certain parts of the image. Rain drops are much skinnier with DLSS. To the point that heavy rain "feels" much lighter, with DLSS. And any kind of shiny visual effect is very blunted. The main character has a jacket with a metallic flake stripe on it. With regular rendering, it sparkles and gives a convincing visual of metal flake paint or something like that. With DLSS, the sparkle is notably blurred and blunted. To be fair, TAA also blurs this effect. But DLSS puts an extra bluntness on it. Later in the game there are other shiny and sparkling effects which are also similarly effected.

Overall, I prefer the ingame FXAA and then to just let my GPU upscale the image. Aliasing is worse. But the visual effects and depth are better, IMO.

They did do an update to DLSS in death stranding like 2 weeks ago. I haven't checked it out yet. I know it added an option to scale up from an even lower base resolution. But I don't know if there were any quality improvements.
Cool good to know. I've been holding off purchasing it because I didn't know if I wanted a Nvidia / AMD card, since that decision would effect the experience. It's good to know the traditional rendering methods are better.

I think with DLSS that people need to see it more as a scaling method that reduces IQ for framerate. The trick is whether it's noticeable or not. If it's noticeably bad then there's no point.

I imagine the 3080TI would have to be as good has the 3090 in gaming, if not better to make sense, specially if there is a 20 gig regular 3080 coming up and the Ti is more expensive than that one.

It was suggested the 20GB might be called the Ti.
Its hard to split that small of a performance difference up, and it would be confusing.

ps the ROG Strix 3080 has been reviewed on YT and when clocked is as fast as the 3090.
Just to muddy the waters further ;)

This is one of the reviews, cant remember which one mentions the 3090

Man they really screwed the product stack this year if so...
Yep, no matter which way it goes :)
Take this all with a grain of salt, but this is what I have been being told for a while now and some of it did not make sense at first. NV was looking to get away from Ti and Super branding this product cycle while falling back on VRAM to be the differentiators between product SKUs in the top half of the stack. Now seeing how no MHz have been left on the table with these 3080 and 3090 cards, this all starts to make a bit more sense as Samsung's 8nm process has backed NV into a corner as it started fearing losing to AMD's upcoming products. Yeah, NV's product stack is so terribly compressed at the high end, I don't seem them countering Big Navi with a "killer" product to slot in on it anywhere without totally cannibalizing its own 3090 product and pissing off a lot of customers along the way. Then again, maybe not if they have only sold a couple thousand in NA....

extremely. They have massive amounts of room to play around with lower tier cards, but with the 3090 being the 'flagship' card and the 3080 really right at its heals in all aspects save for vram capacity, a 20gb variant of the 3080 would certainly close the gap enough for 99% of people. At this point I don't think the 3090 demand is even for it's performance, but more so peace of mind vs the anxiety of wondering if 10gb will be enough throughout the lifespan of the card [for the 3080]. The 1% of people buying a 3090 because it is worth 2x the price for 10% more performance will always be there, but I think for many enthusiasts, a 3080 20gb, with or without addition of extra cores, is going to be the perfect card.

That being said, I still think the lineup will shine overall, with the assumption that nvidia will release lower cards down to $299 price point, if speculative performance/dollar of the 3070 is anything to go by.

A 20GB 3080 should cannibalize 3090 sales since there's not much raw performance between them. Then the calculation becomes ~50% more dollars for 4GB RAM and 20% more peak performance.

if they released a unique driver package for the 3090 with productivity in mind (titan driver), then it could be worth it to the people that can actually utilize it or who can take advantage of memory capacity by scaling their workflow. I do understand some people buying the best and not touching anything for 5 years until they do it again. They get the best performance possible for a while, and even when it is time to replace it, it's still decent/has resale value. If AMD has something that trades blows with 3080 performance yet has more vram, then I think we will see that 20gb variant sooner, but otherwise, probably not for a while...

I think this is what nVidia expect, so we could see it soon, probably announced when we know the Big Navi price.

Jesus christ what a shit show of a launch.

I mean, I am more than ready for an upgrade, but this shit is awful.

I'm hoping big Navi is a positive surprise at this point.

https://www.techspot.com/review/2110-nvidia-rtx-2080-1440p-gaming-bottleneck

Ampere benchmarked at 720p to confirm what we already knew. Big wide GPUs need lots of pixels to stretch their legs.

I'm of the opinion that they'll miraculously fix 1440p scaling after Big Navi launches.

" There's some kind of bottleneck going on with the RTX 3080, but we don’t think it’s necessarily the CPU, but rather a driver overhead issue that affects scheduling for core heavy GPUs like the RTX 3080."

For those of you tracking how EVGA is handing things, they are now telling you when you signed up for in-stock notifications on their website. If you attempt to make a new notification, it will tell you when you signed up. To help give people an idea of where they stand, someone on reddit made a google spreadsheet where people can input the date/time of their registration as well as report if/when they got an email to buy: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FQupXX51TEgUaP4kIZIxVAMkYNDVzwaRbGikv7bGBgY/edit#gid=0

Currently rocking #18 for the FTW3 Ultra and #4/ #1 / #4 for the XC3 Ultra / Gaming / Black. Obviously that will change as more responses come in but looks like I was ahead of the curve. Going to be watching my email closely.

so how does it work, are you in line for an allocation? And if you get notified, does that mean you are guaranteed one as long as you checkout with a credit card within a certain amount of time?

Yes. Evga is sending out a link to purchase the card. You have 5 hours to checkout.

A minuscule amount of people will update that spreadsheet so it won’t tell you where you actually stand.

I'm aware it's far from an indication of how many people are in line. However, assuming the people who make an entry update it when Evga emails them, it's a reasonably accurate way to gauge where Evga is at in their list.

On the EVGA web site, it's telling me I've already requested the auto-notify, but it's not telling me what position I'm at in the queue.

Yes, I see that.. but you indicated that it showed where you are in the queue. What you pasted doesn't show that, unless I'm losing my mind. Just noticed that the EVGA website is apparently being hammered.. 404.

Ahhh, I got you now. The link I posted is a Google docs made by a redditor. It's user edited, the information doesn't come from Nvidia.

It's far from having a know spot in a queue, but it gives you an approximation of what day/time Evga is at for a given SKU.

The EVGA queue system was interesting, but after I went on their webpage and saw their pre-scalped prices on their OC 3090's ($1,799.99? No thanks) I thought better of it.

there is one for $1729, but yeah, the evga cards are pricey. I see you said OC variant, gotcha. That is the main reason I am not going to a 3090 or 3080 through evga's step up program, they only have the highest price cards available, and they are a terrible value IMO vs any card at or near MSRP. If I'm probably going to have to wait 3 months to get one anyway, I might as well just wait and take a chance finding a better and cheaper card elsewhere.

edit: wait, evga does have cheaper 3090s that are OC cards. $1620 for the XC3 ultra.

Thing is, I plan on using a water block. I don't need the best most expensive flashing christmast tree 30 fan cooler, but I do want to make sure I get a pretty good binned chip.

My theory is Nvidia keeps most of the best bins for themselves, so I guess I'll hold out for a founders edition. . Probably less likely to have any capacitor issues that way... Though, thus far there are no water blocks for them... EK announced one was coming, but I have seen nothing further since....

If I randomly see one I'll pounce on it, but it looks like the chances of getting one before the big Navi reveal on the 28th are pretty small. I hadn't planned on going AMD this gen, but with the availability and reliability issues with some of the 30xx cards, it may be what I do...
