I'm just gonna say first off that I own a PS2 and a GC and I love them both equally. But I was a late adapter and only got the GC because it was $100 and the PS2 because it was $150 about 6 months later. And I buy the games because they are cheap too. At the moment, the PS3 and the X-Box 360 do not interest me at all. I'm just seeing the same old games with prettier graphics on them. And to be honest, I think we reached a point about 3 or 4 years ago where better graphics ceased to meaningfully enrich gameplay, with a few notable exceptions.
I think the problem is in content design mostly. Games have had shadows forever. Many of them have had dynamic shadows. But Doom 3 was the first game to really use light and shadow to greatly enhance the mood. And it wasn't easy, I mean look at how long they had the technology, and how long it took them to come out with the game (from the GF3 up until the GF6). Similarly, I don't really see HDR being widely used to enhance gameplay, or any of the other lighting tricks developers are putting in.
But I've gotten off track. As of right now the only console I'm remotely interested in is the Revolution, and only because I haven't been turned off to it like the X-Box 360 and the Playstation 3 have. Every game I saw previewed for those 2 consoles I just though "Oh...another first person shooter war game..." I like what Nintendo is promising, but if I see just another Mario platformer with prettier graphics, or another Metroid game with flashier weapons, I'll be very dissapointed.
Nintendo seems to be focusing on innovating how you interact with games in general. They've had several motion sensitive games on the GB, the DS has its touch screen, the bongos on the GC. They have a long history of this really, remember the powerglove? But if any of this has proven anything its that innovative control methods to not equal innovative or fun gameplay.
But to get back on topic... having a motion sensitive controller with no buttons kinda freaks me out. I mean that'd be GREAT for when the game is going well for you, you are calm, in control... But imagine when you are getting frustrated, your movements become less cordinated... I mean I already hit the wrong button when I get frustrated all too often, if there weren't even buttons to hit I can't imagine the level of frustration elevating weirdness that would ensue.
