Revolution Controller

I'm just gonna say first off that I own a PS2 and a GC and I love them both equally. But I was a late adapter and only got the GC because it was $100 and the PS2 because it was $150 about 6 months later. And I buy the games because they are cheap too. At the moment, the PS3 and the X-Box 360 do not interest me at all. I'm just seeing the same old games with prettier graphics on them. And to be honest, I think we reached a point about 3 or 4 years ago where better graphics ceased to meaningfully enrich gameplay, with a few notable exceptions.

I think the problem is in content design mostly. Games have had shadows forever. Many of them have had dynamic shadows. But Doom 3 was the first game to really use light and shadow to greatly enhance the mood. And it wasn't easy, I mean look at how long they had the technology, and how long it took them to come out with the game (from the GF3 up until the GF6). Similarly, I don't really see HDR being widely used to enhance gameplay, or any of the other lighting tricks developers are putting in.

But I've gotten off track. As of right now the only console I'm remotely interested in is the Revolution, and only because I haven't been turned off to it like the X-Box 360 and the Playstation 3 have. Every game I saw previewed for those 2 consoles I just though "Oh...another first person shooter war game..." I like what Nintendo is promising, but if I see just another Mario platformer with prettier graphics, or another Metroid game with flashier weapons, I'll be very dissapointed.

Nintendo seems to be focusing on innovating how you interact with games in general. They've had several motion sensitive games on the GB, the DS has its touch screen, the bongos on the GC. They have a long history of this really, remember the powerglove? But if any of this has proven anything its that innovative control methods to not equal innovative or fun gameplay.

But to get back on topic... having a motion sensitive controller with no buttons kinda freaks me out. I mean that'd be GREAT for when the game is going well for you, you are calm, in control... But imagine when you are getting frustrated, your movements become less cordinated... I mean I already hit the wrong button when I get frustrated all too often, if there weren't even buttons to hit I can't imagine the level of frustration elevating weirdness that would ensue.

One thing is for sure. If they would dare to release such a thing over a safe and standard ordinary gamepad then it has to be all worth it. If they have such a controller I will surely check it out otherwise I won´t bother with it as I don´t bather with the other ordinary consoles.

But then I must be a gadget freak.

trackIR
5.1 headphones
nostromo speedpad
DFP
MOMO Force
Saitek Cyborg Force stick
CH Yoke
MS strategical commander
stereo3d glasses
vector expansion
list goes on lol

So I am not the tiniest bit scared of this approach quite the opposite. I am all for new ways to enhance game controllers.

Especially TrackIR with vector aside with my stereo3d glasses really adds dimensions to your gaming.

This thing ROKZ and is way Hawuuuhhhwt. I can finally retire my Nintendo POWER GLOVE!!!!!!
Glamour Shot
Power Glove Ad

Why doesnt nintendo just go with something easy, like a corded 2 button mouse. They could add finger wheel and call it the Revolution Mouse. /sarcasm

wheres the dinovo keyboard? i got one. or the glasstron tv glasses?

i'm not going to judge revolution since there's no real info has been stated.

i had gamecube and it didnt really served me well not like my xbox and ps2 did and still serving me very well w/ on line games :)

i wouldnt call gamecube a failure, but i would say that system really is not very interesting console at all to many others including me. it's all matter of preference and i dont prefer gamecube.. hopefully revolution will have something that will interest me and to many of us who are in doubt right now. Good luck nintendo!

That's the point. Nobody knows nothing about it. Classic Nintendo; keep quiet until nobody cares anymore.

The N64 and Gamecube were not failures.

Do we really need to bring out sales numbers of the Playstation/PS2 Vs. the N64/Gamecube? It won't be pretty.

If you define failure as not selling the most units, then yes, but thats a rather harsh condition of failure. I think most people regard the X-Box as a success MS is having rather large losses in that department but they broke into a new market in a huge way. It all depends what the goals are. Nintendo still made a profit, and is still around. Personally I would call the Dreamcast a failure as Sega is no longer in the hardware market anymore. No doubt the GC wasn't the success Nintendo probably hoped it would be, but it wasn't a failure.

The situation with Microsoft is completely different though. Their stance with the Xbox now is completely new. Last generation they had nothing. This generation they're in the middle of the field with sales. Financial losses are almost always a guarantee when entering a new market. The marketshare they gained, however, is going to be critical in the next gen.

Nintendo, on the other hand, has went from being the dominant name on console gaming to having to fight tooth and nail with a fledgling competitor for second place. They have been consistantly losing marketshare to competition since the Playstation came out. I don't know your definition of success, but I hope that isn't it.

losing market share, yes, but how much has the market expanded. and 6 billion in the bank seems pretty successful to me. having more money each year would not be a failure.

No one company will stay on top for very long. Nintendo had its run as king and was at the top for a long time, so long that people started itching for something new. When sony released the PS1 people bought it because it was different, instead of (or in addition to) their 4th nintendo system in a row. People get bored and want new things, it happened to nVidia. When I first started building computers 5 years ago the geforce cards were the only thing anyone ever talked about, ati wasn't even on the radar. Now, the majority of people use ATI cards, not because they are better really (not imo) but because they were somthing new and different. No company can stay on top forever, that is my point. Sony will have its run with the Playstation series, then Microsoft, then who knows... but everything dies.

Anyways, back to the controller...

Where are the buttons?

Wait a second, I actually read the quote. I'd just like to know how they're actually going to expect people to buy and use a controller that looks like it's completely useless. Ok, so all the control is done via gyroscopes. What happens when I'm laying down? What if I move?

I can see why they went this route. Gyroscopic controls that can sense temperature would immediately be a hit in any boardroom. However, they're not going to be a hit in anyone's living room, because there's going to be a painful learning curve associated with it. Am I going to have to get up and run in circles to play certain games? Will my air conditioning/heating affect gameplay? Stupid little things that should have nothing to do with console gaming suddenly pop up as potentially serious issues. (Someone mentioned earlier all the little unconscious movements you make when gaming. Do those now affect your game? If they do, you now have to recondition yourself to play games.)

Innovations can be made in hardware OR software, and a little of both is required to get ahead. Too much innovation in software only means your games are unplayable on your hardware (GTA:SA for PS2 comes to mind), and too much hardware innovation leads to a device whose potential is never met and/or people turning away from something that is "too different."

Nintendo needs to make a move to avoid being completely pushed aside. Unfortunately for them, I don't think this is the move they needed to make.

Who knows? Maybe the controller will be like that $500 keyboard and it DOES have buttons, but you just stick them on whenever you need them and can arrange them how you like. Now THAT would be a fantastic gaming hardware innovation. A lot better than a controller that knows how aroused I am. (Hey, that's a use for a temperature/pressure/moisture sensitive controller! It could be for dating sims! Those are really huge in Japan!)

A little bit of news, from a recent interview posted on IGN. Some quotes...

...I am not convinced realistic graphics alone make better games...

...Sitting in front of your monitor with a controller, there's really nowhere to go from that paradigm, all you can do is make it prettier and faster. What Nintendo wants to do is to open up that road, create something that goes beyond...

I'm glad they're thinking that way, today's games are getting so stale. I can't even remember the last time a new genre emerged.

Why do you think that such a thing will be a hit in every board room. Board room hates innovation. They want to play safe with things that have worked before and don´t cost much money to develope.

Board rooms loves Xbox 360/PS 3: fixation on visuals and internet. We all know what a cash cow games like WOW are. Why only settle for people buying the game once when you can get them to buy the same game over and over?

But board rooms absolutely hate innovative stuff like this.

Also as for people thinking Nintendo isn´t profitable look at their sales? DS was another disaster for Nintendo. Yet it sales very well how come?

Nintendo do make tons of money even if on consoles Sony is bigger but that is only a part of the big picture.

Indeed I can, just generally though... In the NES/MS, SNES/MD era genres were popping up everywhere compared to now, I know ideas running out is to be expected over time but it really needs to change. I'm just glad at least one company is creating different hardware to fuel new innovations.

I would argue that gaming now is more varied and less stale than it was 10 years ago, where companies would wage genre wars just for the sake of having the better game, not necessarily the most innovative game. Examples: Super Mario World vs Sonic, Streets of Rage vs Final Fight. Meanwhile, today in gaming we have more genres and gameplay styles than ever before.

What most people don't seem to understand is that everything is built on the shoulders of people and ideas that came before. This is how progress occurs. Just because a certain brand name is not on the box does not mean we're automatically out of ideas. I'm really tired of hearing that just because there's a 3 in the game's title, it automatically discounts the possibility of it including anything new.

Hey check out Ea.com - they have a survey that asks which console do you want:

with over 400,000 votes, REVOULUTION gets 38% (last time I checked, can't right now at work and blocked). (ps3 with 36% and xbox360 with the reamining).

Well, it would have been a hit in MY board room. It's got an unparallelled "wow" factor that just makes me want to see if this stuff actually works. I would be on the phone with R&D to see if they had any prototypes I could mess with.

However, without a prototype, cynical old me has to assume that it's one of two things.
  1. All smoke and mirrors; none of it actually works.
  2. Horribly implemented; it sucks the big one.

OK to be totally on topic, that controller looks abosolutely fake.

Thats a total hoax, its just wrong. It makes no sense, i don't care how many times I've heard nintendo say "its a secret", that CAN NOT be it... :(

From what I've played - Nintendo has had the best games I have ever played, except burnout 3/4 (boo EA you suck).

Monkey Ball and Mario Party have been the big eaters of my console life...

I have all 3 consoles now, but only because ps2 has the shooters, xbox is my media box, and gamecube is my gaming console.. Unfourtuneltely Nintendo has alienated alot of stuff - I bet if they actually pushed online play, burnout 3 would have been on the gamecube... (All systems are having a long summer, nothing big is coming out until september but nintendo is being hit hardest, nothing for 5 months now.)

Revolution is going to be the first console I get again! Why? There isn't a good n64 emulator out there!! Remeber YOU CAN PLAY EVERYTHING ON IT!! w00t!!

Xbox360 doesn't have backwards compatibility at aLL WTF?

Ps3, atleast its got the huge library of games too still.

And no one is mentioning the fact that AGAIN (probably) the Nintendo system will cost half as much as the others.. (Check out the latest quote from shacknews about ps3- working to buy a friggin console! LOL).

I see the controller as eliminating hand eye cordination.

Doesn't anyone remember seeing someone playing a video game for the first time and them moving with the guy on the screen? Leaning in the direction they are going, hopping when they need to jump and so forth?

The Rev's controller is making you go back to that.

Not my cup of water. But to each his/her own.

Super Monkey Ball is a Sega game, not nintendo. Now that is a game that could really benifit from a gyroscopic controller. Personally I hope the controller for revolution really is revolutionary , not just some lame hyped POS like the ps3. Sorry bout the sony bashing, but after reading Kutaragis comments I'm starting to think that he has completely lost his mind. I guess working non-stop for 15 years will do that to someone.

Has anybody mentioned that instead of tilting and moving the controller about, that perhaps nintendo has implemented a sort of "touch screen" on the control, where instead of joysticks and buttons your fingers move about on the pad recreating a control pad?

sorry for the confusing post, what I'm trying to say is that you move your thumbs about on the control pad as if there were joysticks and buttons, but there are no joysticks or buttons! Does that make sense?

Tiny if anyone was ever like that.. They probably didn't last long in quake 3.. :D

But I understand what you mean, I don't find it very 'good' other.. makes me wonder....

I understand what your saying. Basically the control surfaces would be under a smooth top shell and the underworkings would pick up where your fingers are, the actions they make, etc to control what is on screen.

I do however think that eliminating any tactile feedback from the controller is not a good idea. Has anyone ever used those touch screens or flat pressure sensitive plates ? It is frustrating as hell to use these. You cant tell if it has accepted your selection, and half the time you have to use a lot of force as they are usually half broken or not accepting anything but the type of force an air chisel gives off.

So you do get what I was saying! thanks

Yes, touchscreens can be a little fustrating but they work well. PDAs are an example of this, and I was thinking teh revolution controller would be similar to a laptop's thumbtouchpad, if the gyroscopic design was not implemented.

I drive across town just to use an ATM that has beeps and actually buttons on it, THAT is how much I hate touchscreen.

I remember reading like two months ago.. nintendo saying that their controller will have a familiar layout.. that it will have 'A' and 'B' buttons, and direction pad... it's just they are gonna have more than just that..

I dont care what you say...its very simple, if, for example, HL2 sucked, that still wouldn´t take away from the fact that HL is still one if not the best computer game ive ever played... I think of all of what nintendo has done in the past years (yeah i dont care if its past glory) and i cant bring myself to think badly of them...

No way sega beat SNES...I remember I got snes, and a friend got the sega and somehow we always ended up in my house playing Mario Kart...

And Kids (10 year olds..) DONT care about graphics...my little brother still loves his old PS Harry Potter game over most of his new XBOX games...He couldnt´care less about Halo 2 ...
well my 9yr old cousin is into morrowind.....daammmn along with halo2 need for speed underground 2 uh GTA series

I think the revo controller is a great idea if implemented correctly. However, I'll definately pick up a third party controller with buttons for the downloadable games.

That was in reply to PCJ's comment, Converge. I wasn't suggesting Nintendo should just stick with their existing contorller for Revolution games. :)

heh nintendo is trying do some creativity here... seems like they are last place...
ps3 and 360 is going to pwn GC
