Don't forget they promised to have SSB3 ONLINE at launch.

I heard that and I creamed myself.

my bad I meant revolution

revolution will still be good with the classic marios :)
GC pwned themselves with online gaming

I guess... and Xbox some how dominated the gaming market because of Online gaming? PS2 barely had anymore online support than GC. Only reason there was more than 1 online enabled PS2 game is sheer volume of software. All the same, the PS2 still dominated the Xbox AND GameCube, which were more or less equal in sales figures world wide.

That arguement doesn't hold much water (to me), and it means even less for next gen, since all consoles will be online enabled, and provide free game service. It is at this point the whatever success the GameCube had should not reflect on Revolution.

Not to sound like an N !!!!!!, but it always perplexes me how anyone gets the idea that current gen hardware somehow determines the success or failure of next-gen hardware... even though this has been somewhat accurate historically... o_O

I really don't belive that not going online yet hurt them in any big way, for starters around only 10% of xbox owners use live, and if I remember rightly it was 3% for quite a while... Nintendo are expecting 90% of DS owners to take advantage of online, and it's probable considering it's free and you can play from any hotspot. Free online play with Revolution, and Smash Bros using it from day one will be a big selling point I'm guessing, If I remember rightly there's an online Final Fantasy title around launch too.

One, Twilight Princess is a Gamecube game. Two, how can SSB3 be the best fighting game you've ever played if it isn't out yet, and therefore you have no way of playing it?

Until they all hit store shelves....they are paper. Thier promises mean nothing.

Agreed. Revolution is a huge gamble, and everything we say about it right now is speculation.

For XBox 360 and PS3, the only thing we really can't say yet is just how good the graphics will be. Everything else will be just like on the last generation of consoles. Not that that's a bad thing. Sometimes thinking inside the box can create great things.

Point is, right now, I'm not even comparing Revolution to the other 2. For all that we know, it could be completely different.

i have a feeling that alot of people are gonna get either a ps3 or a 360, but they all will get the rev.

if the rev has more better grafx & games than xbox360 and ps3, ill get it.. but if they only have mario bro's and pikashit.. forget that.. ill stick w/ 360 and ps3.

They already stated they won't have better graphics, enjoy basing purchases predominantly on graphics.

enjoy playing 5 hour games then

What game on the PS3 and Xbox360 is only 5 hours? Where can I read a review of these games? What score did it get? Do you remember the name? Are these games for both the PS3 and Xbox360 or just one?

See the point I am after there? ;)

If you are going off past games, then someone could say about the REV, "enjoiy having a game come out once every 5 months".

Until they are all out, you can't judge anything about anyone of them.

hmm does ANYONE know how long it takes to full complete morrowind without expansions

1000+hours

we all know oblivion will only take like 4hours though

Well first off, the Revo basically comes with the ability to buy a crapload of old games at the start, which is great. I've been wanting to play StarFox64 again, but lost my copy.

And I definately agree that games are getting shorter, less complex, less immersive etc.
In fact, I hardly play console games any more. Exception being the awsome Disgaea and La Pucelle Tactics.
I am really hoping that the Revo will innovate gameplay. It's not likely, but I'm hoping for it. And if I only get one game a month, but that game kicks ass, I'm happy.

You're actually being quite generous there...8~9 months is more like it.

Nintendo rarely innovates. A stylus and a touch screen is not innovation. Innovation occurs in games, not in hardware. Hardware can certainly aid innovation, but hardware on its own is not innovative.

I am not buying a DS because it has a touch screen, a stylus, and a second screen. I will buy a DS when it gets good, solid games. Yoshi's Touch And Go is literally a warmed-over tech demo, and I'm not quite enthusiastic about playing Mario 64 all over again, added characters or not.

The one game that could get me to buy a DS right now, the Final Fantasy III remake, is nowhere to be seen. Squenix didn't show it at E3, and they aren't showing it at their presentation in a couple of weeks. It's Wonderswan Color syndrome all over again.

We had, Super Maro Bros, 1 3, then world, then the yoshi world sequal... all the same basic game, 2 was an odd ball ;p Then we have Mario 64, amazing, but nothing evermore came of it besides a super soaker with sunshine...

You have the 2d zeldas, the top down RPG like method, then the odd ball side scroller method, then the 3d zeldas, while they may tell a diffrent story are still basically the same game.

Metroid 2d, then her 3d conversion was nice, but past that has there been much else?

etc etc...

These series while impressive DO get old over time, if they dont mix things up, I dont buy them. I dont see why others will jump on anything first party nintendo just on the context its new... when its really not.

Its like saying Dead or Alive Ultamate is so much better than DoA2/3

I tend to like games that are actually expanded upon, CoH is nice, I play, they add zones as time goes on, its a NEW part of the SAME game. Not rehashed and sold as something 'more', I think thats a lame way to market a game... but thats just me.

Most console sequals are like PC game expansion sets, nothing more, yet you still play full price, and you still get fed the BS that its a new game.

People that claim that retro gaming is where they had the most fun... it may be true, you were young or whatever and enjoyed the game... pretty basic psychology -.- Had an impact on your youth, so you natrual are nostalgic of those times/memories/etc.

Been a gamer since NES, was there for the launch of the SNES, N64, hated the evil of the PSX ;p

I loved nintendo, but as I grew and saw thier support for third parties, and thier horrible business/design/marketing decissions, I lost my faith in them to ever really stand up again.

They would be better of just making software for the next gen consoles... sega is doing decent, and the majority of thier actual franchise is pretty lame ;p Nintendo would kick ass and take names if they focused on what they are GOOD at, software.

Wait a minute... first you're saying complete overhauls to the format is nothing new, then compare it to PC gaming like they are expansions. This is like saying Duke Nukem is just an expansion to Contra. They are completely different games, simply BECAUSE of the format. Mario, Zelda, and Metroid going 3D were all big changes. The basics of gameplay are the same, and that is fine. They aren't attempting to make entirely new genres with these series, they are attempting to apease fans of the series while improving the gameplay. No, it isn't innovative, I will grant you that. Pikmin is original. Not necessarily innovative, but original. This is abundantly obvious because there are no classic Nintendo trademarks in sight. If they took just about any of their existing trademarks and tried to apply it to Pikmin it wouldn't go over very well. They 'have' to keep their existing franchises similar in gameplay. Mario is about the only one which can be all over the board. Look what happened to Star Fox: Adventures. People were pissed it wasn't a typical flight shooter. Some liked it, but most of the fans were intensely disappointed.

I personally do no mind playing the same game a different way. Maybe you are correct, and most console sequels are like PC expansions, but Nintendo doesn't necessarily follow this trend. Of course it isn't immune, but who isn't? Majora's Mask? Metroid Prime Echos? I don't necessarily have issue with Nintendo being unoriginal. They do need some new trademarks now that just about evrey classic has gone 3D, but the examples you used to illustrate were poor.

Joystiq have some "news" on the Rev controller from a 3rd party developer, here. Take it with a grain of salt...

Nintendo better have something amazing, it better make up for no HDTV support. Maybe its a sponge that you bend , push and squish to controll the games. A wi-fi warm/cold sponge with tilt sensing gyros and electro-chemical lights.

I don't know about you but I can't wait to play Mario Kart : Revolution with my wireless burning sponge.

Lol, anyways on one of my earlier post when I said ssb3 I meant number 2, and the Gamecube is only going to play the legend of zelda: Twilight princess at like 30Fps, so the revolution will be able to have it steady 60, thats what I meant.

And I really want the revolution to come out soon also.

That's code for "We don't have anything worth showing yet"

Or code for "We want everyone's fervor for ps3 and xbox360 to die down"

You seem to have no respect for Nintendo. Without Nintendo, the other two probably wouldn't be making consoles either.

Why should I respect them? They've put out two undersupported systems in a row that I wasted my hard-earned cash on. Sorry, but I don't feel compelled to praise them for the last well-supported system that they put out fourteen years ago.

They're making the same mistakes that they made with the Gamecube. They aren't advertising. They aren't generating "fervor" of their own. The hype for the X360/PS3 is going to grow, not diminish.

By the way, why do you seem to think that Nintendo started the industry? There were consoles out long before the NES ever saw the light of day. Hell, the NES almost destroyed the industry.

Sony didn't need the help of Nintendo; they proved that when they made the Playstation a stand-alone console instead of a joint venture with Little N.

I don't recall an NES ET game, though there was an Atari ET game that really did crash the industry.

Yep you are right. I talked to a lot of people who said that they will get the xbox 360 then the PS3 but the wont get the Revolution. I ask them if they even know a single thing about the Revolution and they respond with no. They wont buy the Revolution because Nintendo isnt cool in their opinion.

It's a shame that people buy consoles based on "coolness" when video games have never been that "cool" to the average person. What happened to the dominance of real geeks, who like things based upon quality and fun instead of coolness?

They made their last stand with the Dreamcast...I was there (9/9/99).

A couple things. It's really starting to annoy me that any thread started about next-gen console features ends up being a continuous flame war. I end up seeing posts by the same people, supporting the same thing, over and over. It's like I'm reading the same thread in five different places, the only difference being the original topic that gets ignored anyway.

The other thing that bothers me is the people who start screaming !!!!!! when anyone ever goes to support a console. Some of these people retain some of the same characteristics seen in a !!!!!!, you could call them "anti-!!!!!!s". They seem to shoot down every person/arguement which supports a specific system. Instead of having a blind faith in the company, these people seem to have a blind hate. They never admit that the company has done any good, they constantly counterattack with arguements. Why does everyone seem to view this in black and white? Where are the shades of grey that are supposed to be there? It seems like everyone has an absolute opinion about the console companies. This just bugs me as !!!!!!s and anti-!!!!!!s are equally guilty of dealing in absolutes.

Another thing that is rampant in these kinds of threads is making judgements on consoles that aren't even released yet. PS3, XBOX360, nor Revolution are released yet. It's just plain stupid to say that one is better than the other at this point. Reguarding this point though, at least XBOX360 has some stuff running in-game at E3. This cannot be said for Nintendo or Sony. I especially loved Sony's entirely pre-rendered presentation. Whoa, that's awesome, the system is not even doing that! (end sarcasm). Judgements cannot really be made about Nintendo either. Their "revolutionary" controller has not been seen and could end up being lame, so its hard to bank on the controller making or breaking the system. So I guess my point here is, don't make judgements on the systems yet. It's too early.

As far as the whole innovation topic goes, I believe that both hardware and software can be innovative. It's true that a unique and new piece of hardware could facilitate the development of new and interesting titles. Innovation in hardware could also possibly change the way we play games. Yet it's also possible to design an innovative piece of software using a standard controller design. So really there's ways for both software and hardware to be innovative.

Now on to the topic of the "center of home entertainment". Both PS3 and XBOX360 are going to try and do this. Although this is a neat idea, lets look at some similar examples to this. A home audio system usually contains parts from many different companies. Usually speakers, sub, amp, etc, are all made by different companies (Klipsch, Polk, etc). Next, a tuner car. A combination of parts made by different companies. My point here is, when something is well designed for a single purpose, it will give an awesome performance in its intended use. But then look at something that tries to do a bunch of things at once. Usually you end up with something that can do a lot, but can only do a decent job, instead of doing an outstanding job. So being the "center of home entertainment" could actually turn out weakening these consoles.

One thing that really disgusts me with the current game market is the primary focus on advancement of graphics and other "wow" factors, whereas good gameplay seems to be a secondary focus. Both Sony and Microsoft seem to be doing this with their next-gen consoles. I'm not saying Nintendo is better here, as they only told us they are trying to innovate and doing something new. They haven't delivered on that promise yet either. If they do deliver, more power to them. I would be open to see something new added to the gaming experience.

Good job, you've made it to the end of my huge post! I tried to make this post as unbiased as possible, and just do some good old fashion reasoning.

also

Where did I say they started it?....

They aren't advertising because they don't want to let people down if they need to change things *ps3's lack of router support*, and the product isn't even close to being released. I haven't seen one PS3 either, I have seen the xbox360 article in Time and the shitty MTV special.

If you think you "wasted" money on Gamecube, to each his own. Best $200 someone could have spent on me with mine.
