The U.S. Army is breaking with a tradition in custom communications and turning to an off the shelf solution for its Special Forces. The Army is making use of Android phones for missions in low connectivity areas due to its programmable open source code.


One benefit of using Android-run devices is that Android keeps its source code open. If special operators find that the TactSA functions don’t quite meet their needs, they could conceivably design their own.

I just hope they don't get a Galaxy S. Could you imagine Special Forces calling in a strategic strike based on the GPS on that thing?

(And before anyone nerd rages on me about how they would have military grade GPS devices and not use consumer stuff for that, obviously I was joking.)

I'm surprised they're not going with the iPhone. It would lend a certain element of class to our military. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if it improved our foreign relations.
 
Cool, look forward to trying this out. I've been carrying an old iphone for quick snapshots, notetaking, and ballistics calculations. We always say that most of the expensive, ruggedized electronic gadgets they make for us suck, and a smartphone in a hardcase would make more sense. Guess they finally listened...
 
And they'll have location based ad sense so you'll know where the nearest mcdonald is.

I can imagine a black ops team sneaking through enemy territory and google pointing out the nearest shopping mall.

Or hell... they can just run google latitude and the base commander can track their progress in real time.
 
Anyone here who thinks the Military is going to use ANYTHING apple, is sadly mistaken.

Apple does not meet anywhere close to DoD standards and requirments.

Since the android is open source, DoD can install there own software packages.

That and they won't trust anything Apple makes to not overheat in direct sunlight, much less in deserts.

Plus in battle situations, they don't need to worry about whether or not they're holding it wrong.

All of these are pretty much debatable, but in my opinion it loses on the best apps. That's the one thing the App Store has going for it.

Considering you have over x number of phones which use the Android OS. It's not exactly fair to compare every single Android powered phone to the 3GS/iPhone 4. I'm sure there a good number of phones with these features they aren't powered by Google or Apple.

Vendors have until December 15 to bid on TactSA. It might not hurt to ask special operators themselves what they most need the development to accomplish.

Apple has a clause in their TOS that forbids their product to be used in environments such as hospitals and probably the military anyways.
