Razer Edge Pro Gaming Tablet

Is it really that Big?

GT 640M LE is 500MHz.
GT 640M is 625MHz.

That's about 25% difference in clock only.
At least not double(100%) the performance.

It's pretty underwhelming, granted these are synthetic marks. But it does give you a sense of the raw power the regular 640M has vs. a mid-range card...

WNoOG.jpg

Again, still way better than an HD4000 in both performance and features. So it should do plenty fine compared to current-gen consoles and entry PC gaming. However I think it's best to wait at least until the next generation of devices like this. Maybe even a couple of generations to be safe...

When you are already talking about laptop GPUs that barely cut it as is, having one thats gimped like the LE in many cases is the difference between barely playable and not at all.

We are talking about a chip that cant even max WoW in a package that costs $1k to $1500.

25% difference in clock speed is quite a big difference.

You are comparing a tablet that weight around 0.9 kg to a Desktop GTX 560 Ti GPU card(alone) that weight around 0.6kg.

"In our “World of Warcraft,” where we max out all the settings, the Acer Aspire M3 came out on top with an average of 80 frames per second, beating even the Alienware M14x (77 fps). However, it should be noted that the M3 has the lowest-resolution display of the bunch (1366 x 768), so, all things being equal, we would imagine the M14x coming out slightly ahead. Still, 80 fps is nothing to sneeze at."

Let say the GT 640M LE is 80%(500MHz/625MHz) as fast as the GT 640M.
80% out of 80FPS = 64FPS

Which is more than adequate, especially when compared to the target that consoles go for with 30+ fps. Especially since this seems to be targeted more toward "casual" gamers from what I can tell.

Ahh... Apologize for my bad English understanding... not my local language...:(

It's a slow chip, good enough to get the job done. But the fact is, that the regular 640M is about half the power of a desktop version of the 640. The 640 LE is even further handicapped.

But this isn't meant to be a power house machine, so it might find its niche.

For a 1366x768 max resolution, it should do quite fine, I guess.

That is why, on my earliest post, I've mentioned on the wishful thinking of OCing the GT 640M LE on this tablet.

My Vaio 640M LE can be MOD to a 1000MHz(default is 500MHz) core clock without any issue whatsoever, while it only increased 3-6 Celsius compared to stock clock(500MHz).
My current GT 640M LE runs at the same or slightly higher performance than a stock GT 640 desktop with a simple BIOS MOD.

A stock GT 640 desktop scores a 2164 Graphics score on 3DMark11(P settings).
Mine scores a 2304 Graphics score :

Sorry. Not trying to promote or anything.
Just want to clarify on certain thing.

That dual core i5 + 640m LE cant even pull 30fps FPS on max settings in wow. I have no clue where you pulled that quote and graph from but theres something missing from the picture. The 640M manages 41 FPS with a very similar dual core as seen here. The LE wont even get you a stable 30 FPS.

Also stop using the 640M to make points for the LE. Its 15-40% less performance not a magical solid percentage. On top of that keep in mind when looking that both the LE and non LE 640s have 2 versions, GDDR3 and GDDR5. The razer machine uses the GDDR3.

So once again, NO with a low poer dual core processor and 640LE you cannot even max wow with reliable performance. The setup is pitiful and pretty much any gaming laptop $650 and up will stomp it in the dirt.

This is where I got them :
http://blog.laptopmag.com/nvidia-600m-series-kepler-gpu-tested-smaller-stronger-more-efficient

Even if it is 15-40% less performance, it could still do fine on a 1366x768 resolutions.

Also, please stop comparing it to a cheap heavy laptop that is not a tablet.
They are NOT the same.

Sure they are. Try doing any real gaming without the lapdock. Its pointless, unless by some magic touch based high graphic games start coming out of the sky you will need the lapdock and for some games you can get by with the controller accessory. Otherwise its just another tablet that plays angry birds until the owner gets bored that CAN become a laptop to do some minor PC gaming.

And no it wont do "fine" Its a very expensive gaming device thats already about 2 years behind in power. It dont get better in the future it gets worse.

Also please note that the quote you posted earlier was from the 640M with GDDR5 and 256 bit thats significantly faster than the LE with 128 bit GDDR3.

But hey you are not biased or nothing right? Keep posting those youtube videos and arguing bullshit, if you own it you have to defend it amirite? WTF is with people these days. $500 worth of hardware in a $1k-$1500 package used to only be acceptable to mac fans.

Your logic is that every single laptop in this world should cost about the same if the CPU and GPU specs is the same, regardless of its quality, portability and weight?

So those ultra light laptop(around 1kg) with just a slow CPU and no dedicated GPU should by right cost like trash compared to a cheap laptop that weight more than 2 kilos fitted with a 7670M??

Those x86 Windows tablet like the Samsung Ativ-Pro with a shitty spec(Intel Core i5 3317U 1.70 GHz, no dedicated GPU) that cost about USD1,199.99 compared to a normal laptop that cost around USD500 with a dedicated GPU are just stupid?

http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/portege/Z930/Z930-S9302
A Toshiba laptop as per above link that only comes with a Intel® Core™ i7-3667U Processor, 1366x768 (HD) LCD, NO dedicated GPU, weight around 1.1kg that cost around USD1,479.00 is much-much more insanely ridiculous?

Where in the world did you get that spec about the 640M with 256 bit?:p

It looks like you are the one who is bullshitting here.

Stop feeding the newborn troll guys, watching him pull up bullshit numbers is giving me a headache.

There is absolutely no point in buying this underpowered and overpriced piece of shit. The first fact that should hit everyone square in the face is that in order to really "game" on it, you need the dock, which basically turns it into a laptop. The next fact should be that without that dock, the only games you are going to be playing are ones designed with a controller in mind. The last thing that should hit your mind before you laugh at anyone stupid enough to buy this, is that it is damn near the size of a 15" laptop and is uncomfortable to hold for any stretch of time, thus forcing you to have it resting on something...just like a laptop.

Isn't the first fact why no one should buy it that it's made by Razer? Thus very very likely to be utter crap?

Bullshit numbers?
Can you point me out to that? or you're just another bullshitter trying to protect another bullshitter just because I'm a newbie?
So, you also agrees that all of the laptops should be priced the same, regardless of the quality, portability and weight?
Maybe you can share your thoughts on the price that the tablet should be?

Just in case you are not aware. Microsoft Surface Pro tablet will be release at a starting price of $899.
Specs are 3rd Gen Intel Core i5 Processor with Intel HD Graphics 4000(NO dedicated GPU), FullHD LCD, 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD, weight around 0.9kg, and around 0.5 inch thick.

While the Razer Edge will be release at a starting price of $999.99.
Specs are Intel Core i5 Dual core with Intel HD 4000, GT 640M LE, HD LCD, 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD, weight around 0.9kg, and around 0.8 inch thick.
Specs from : http://atlantablackstar.com/2013/01/09/razer-edge-worlds-first-high-end-gaming-tablet/

Btw, where did you get the info that this thing is almost as big as a 15" laptop?
Do you have any idea of how a 15" laptop looks like?

Is that some kind of a bullshit numbers? :D

- No one has said everything should be priced the same, stop with the strawman bullshit.
- This "tablet" shouldn't exist, as such I am not going to put a price on it.
- We are not discussing the Microsoft Surface Pro, especially since it is not being touted as a "gaming tablet."
- I priced out an HP envy with the same screen as this tablet for $959, for that money you get an I5 quadcore @2.4, 8gig ram, 750gig hard drive, and an Nvidia GT 650M. If you spend another $100 you get an I7.

So why would someone spend $50 more for a "hand held" tablet that cant be held for more then a short period of time? Why would I spend $150 more then the HP laptop just to be able to use the tablet like a laptop? a laptop that is quite a bit weaker then the real laptop?

- I take it you dont understand what it means when a description says "10.1 screen," that does not include the 1/2-1" around the screen which means you are now up to 11-12". Now lets add on those handles, those add what, 5-6"? so now your up to 15-17" wide by 11-12" height?

Now it will be what about, 4" smaller width wise then a a 15.6" laptop when you use the dock? Though now we get back to the whole "using it like a laptop" problem we talked about before. Though I did forget to mention that trying to play PC games on a 10.1" screen is going to suck pretty hard, especially when you could of spent less money for a more powerful laptop with a 50% bigger screen.

This, guy posts videos of his 640mle machine modded playing games online. Registers here to tell everyone how not shitty and underpowered the chip is then goes on to argue about hos this overpriced piece of shit is not a ripoff.

Pretty much take almost every argument against that awful razer blade and apply it here x2. At least the blade could pull off some worthwhile gaming.

Like i said before, underwhelming specs, useless as a tablet, the dock is mandatory to do any real gaming, at a price point that would make Steve Jobs proud.

Once you realize that without the dock this thing is just useless for its intended purpose you realize you would be far better off buying a laptop. Hell laptop + PS3 controller over bluetooth >>>>>>>>>> this piece of shit.

Well, since you've said that this thing is underpowered and overpriced, so I was wondering what kind of specs and price it should be.
It's a tablet just like the Microsoft Surface Pro, but more powerful, and just a slight more expensive, leads me to mentioned the Microsoft Surface Pro as a comparison.

What would you call a gaming tablet(not a gaming laptop) then?
A 10 inch size, 0.8 inch thick , 0.9kg tablet, with a Quad Core and a GTX 660M?
Imagine how it will cater the power requirement and heat management on that thing.
Proly 30 minutes of battery on gaming due to its weight, and 100 celsius of heat on the CPU and GPU due to its thickness?

If not, then is it wrong for Razer to call its tablet as a gaming tablet, coz there are non currently?

Well now you are comparing a tablet to a normal laptop.
You do realize that you can do other things on a tablet besides gaming right?
Browsing internet, reading e-books, doing some work, and a number of other things on a tablet is much-much more easier and comfortable compared to a laptop.
You can carry it around and hold it in your hands comfortably because of the size and weight compared to a normal laptop(with dedicated GPU that are atleast as powerful or much more powerful than a GT640M LE) that are bigger in size and weight more than 2kg.

Now do you get it why it wasn't supposed to be compared to a normal laptop?

If you still don't get it, then I might as well get a desktop if I follow your logic.
It can do a lot of things just like a laptop, though not all.
It is way cheaper and much-much more powerful.
I can even play games on a 24 inch(coz it sucks to play only on 15" laptop) LCD with all the details on MAX!
Well, in the end, you will mostly use your laptop to play games at home, eventhough you own a gaming laptop, and plug it in to a power adapter due to its short battery.
So I might as well get a powerful desktop, if I use your logic.

As for the Razer Gamepad controller, yes, it does seems a bit awkward and tiring holding it on air for a while.
The keyboard dock makes much sense.
Or you can just use any wireless gamepad, keyboard and mouse. Coz it is an x86 windows OS powered tablet afterall.

You just dont fucking get it. Without the dock it is 100% useless for its intended purposes therefore its a shitty underpowered gaming laptop that CAN be a tablet for light duty. That is why it is being compared to laptops not tablets. If you want to game on the thing the lapdock is 100% necessary outside of a few controller games.

Razer is making a product on the HOPE that touch based 3D gaming reaches further than the shitty little casual offerings it already has and thats a fantasy.

Now even you seem to agree the controller accessory is junky and awkward then go on to advocate the use of other wireless gamepads which completely defeats the entire purpose of the damn thing.

If you want a portable gaming device give me one good reason to buy this over a more powerful laptop.

Oh, and it's a tablet, so it'll make him fit into the hipster crowd that much more! :D

The reason why I showed the Videos is because I just wanted to share the possibility of OCing the GT 640M LE to a GT 650M level.
That was my first post on this forum, trying to share with you guys.

The argument started when I see your post about comparing a tablet to a normal laptop, which is like comparing a laptop to desktop.

As for the 640M LE thing, I only comment on it coz you're saying that the differences of a GT 640M to a 640M LE is Biiiiiiiiig.
So, I showed and shared the differences between a 640M to a 640M LE, which is only the core clock of 625MHz compared to a 500MHz, of which of only a 25% differences.
Though there are 640M with a GDDR5, the same goes to the 640M LE.
Eventhough I shared the results of a GT 640M GDDR5 instead of the DDR3 edition, the results aren't that big of a difference, coz they are both 128 bit. NOT 256 bit like you've mentioned coming out from sky.

Now that you can't argue back because of the bullshit you spewed, you start attacking me on the videos and about me defending my ownership of a GT 640M LE...

We are comparing THIS PIECE OF SHIT RAZER TABLET to laptops because in order to use it for its intended purpose, you have to buy a $100 accessory that turns it into a ....drum roll please..... LAPTOP.

Overclocking the POS isnt going to do much for the damn thing considering it is going to be severely CPU limited. Hell, lets say you overclock the CPU and GPU and get a 30% speed increase on both, just how long do you think that batter is going to last? So why wouldn't someone just buy a laptop for cheaper, thats more powerful, and has a longer battery life, over this POS?

25% difference in clock speed is a massive difference... If you took a 25% pay cut would it be a negligible pay cut? If you had a 25% off coupon somewhere is it just a tiny savings? Really man...

That 25% clock speed difference relates to anywhere from 15-40% difference in performance. Thats a substantial difference. If i could wave a magic wand and guarantee 15% increased performance it would be considered big...

So yeah your ownership of the 640m LE is the only reasonable explanation for your compulsion to defend it. Its why you registered here and its why you continue to argue nonsense and make a clown of yourself. Congrats, you have a mediocre gaming laptop. Thats not a reason to cruise the web looking to defend its components.

The 640M LE is an underpowered piece of shit. The regular 640m is barely an acceptable gaming chipset having a crippled version of it blows.

For $1300+, this tablet is way overpriced for what little specs it gives, not counting the added costs of all of the peripherals.
One can buy an ASUS laptop with an i7 @ 2.4GHz, 12GB RAM, 750GB HDD, and a GTX670M 3GB for $1400; of which I would consider to be a true portable gaming system.

Oh and good job ignoring my question. I will ask again.

If you want a portable gaming device give me one good reason to buy this over a more powerful laptop.

Though not all games can be played on a touch screen or a gamepad, but still there are games that can.

While that Razer introduced it's gamepad controller for the edge, that doesn't mean that users will NEED to use it or like it. Users can just ignore that accessory and get their own wireless/bluetooth gamepad and do gaming on it, simple.
So, that doesn't generally affect the whole purpose of the tablet itself, but just the controller.

Why buy this over a more powerful laptop?
-Light weight
-Portable
-Can turn into a tablet
-Can still do gaming, though not all the games at max, but better than most lightweight and portable laptop.

A lot of people bought the Vaio S13, which is a 13" laptop, 1.67kg, and fitted with a GT 640M LE. That includes me.
Why? Coz it is damn light and much more portable than a normal gaming laptop.
I previously owned a Sager NP8150 with a 6970M, a 15 inchers which weight around 3.1kg.
I only play games twice a week, and that thing is heavy.
After changing to a 13" laptop, and MOD it to GT 650M speed, I can still do gaming like I've always does. Just that I have to tune down the settings when I play it on my 1080P lcd screen. But still, I don't regret a bit.
I can even play games on the bed, carrying it around the house easily compared to my previous Sager.
If you look at the videos(which I highly doubt), I can even play borderlands 2 on 1080P settings with everything max except for the physx.
I've completed the game with that settings, without any issue on lagging.
Though those are running on a BIOS MOD. Thus it would be nice if the Razer Edge can be MOD too.

At least I'm getting a 640M LE, compared to those who got the Asus UX32VD with just a GT620M.
But then again, I'm seeing alot of them happy with the performance.

Not enough?

Though not all games can be played on a touch screen or a gamepad, but still there are games that can.

While that Razer introduced it's gamepad controller for the edge, that doesn't mean that users will NEED to use it or like it. Users can just ignore that accessory and get their own wireless/bluetooth gamepad and do gaming on it, simple.
So, that doesn't generally affect the whole purpose of the tablet itself, but just the controller.

How do you play on this tablet with a controller if you cant hold it and don't have the dock? you think it is feasible to jury rig something up to lean it against every time you want to play a game? it also isn't very portable if you have to CARRY A CONTROLLER AROUND WITH IT.

You also want to know what kind of games that you play on a touchscreen? The same ones you can play on a smart phone that you are carrying around in your pocket.

So your justifications for why this is a good buy is that it is...

Portable - Though it isn't any more portable then a laptop if you use the controller, 3rd party controller, or dock with it.
Light weight - Even though once you add in the weight of a controller and dock it starts to hit laptop weight.
Can turn into a tablet - Even though you can get tablets for a third the cost to play the same touch screen games you will use this POS for.
Gaming - Even though a cheaper laptop will be more powerful, have a bigger screen, longer battery life, keyboard, and a variety of ports to plug accessories into.

Looks like we are right back where we started, with this Razer tablet being under-powered, over-priced, and having to compromise on everything it tries to do.

So it can turn into a laptop. So what?
It can turn into a laptop to play more games on a keyboard and mouse, but it still can play quite a number of games without it, on the touch screen maybe not much but there are still, but by just using a wireless gamepad, users can play quite a number of games, no?

With the MOD/OC, it does increase the power usage, but not by much coz there are no voltage increased. It also can run on a GT 650M level, while running on a lower voltage than even a GT 640M.

So, again, why wouldn't someone just buy a laptop for cheaper, powerful, longer battery life?
Coz it is much more portable, much more lighter, and can turn into a tablet while only sacrifice some slight graphic details!
Not everyone needs gaming on max settings and at a super smooth fps to be satisfied.
Even if you can get a cheap laptop that comes with GT 650M and FullHD LCD, you still can't play ALL games well on it on max. Not even on GTX 675M!
Why FullHD? Cos you'll be using it on a 15" LCD, which will look horrible on 1366x768 resolutions compared to a 10" running on a same resolution.

Do remember, from 15 to 40 percent, so not all on 40%, coz not all also 15%.
So, an average is much more applicable. Thus the 25%.

So, a 25% difference is enough to justify your exaggerated crap of "Biiiiiiiggg"?

Also.. there are still alot of laptop owners who still have a GT540M and lower on their laptop.. But they can still do gaming on it... though not max...

There are owners of a lightweight laptop that they paid for more than 1k that doesn't even have a dedicated GPU.
So, why do they pay for such a laptop that can't even do gaming nicely(HD4000) but cost highly expensive?
Do you have the answer?

I'd rather walk around and play a VirtualBoy before touching this tablet abomination!

Thats why it has a dock! So you don't have to touch it! (which probably voids the warranty anyway, because it's made by RazOr, and their build quality is so cheap :D)

Carry the dock outside, use a controller at home?

So, using it with a keyboard dock suddenly makes it not portable anymore? It turned into a 14" or a 15" laptop is it?

So, a 0.9kg tablet, let say connected to 0.7kg dock, and turned it into 1.6kg, is now not lightweight anymore? show me a cheap laptop with a GT640M LE or better with a weight of 1.6kg or less?

Can turn into a tablet doesn't mean that you can't do anything else other than touchscreen gaming.
You can still do your work using your normal x86 windows apps as per normal right?
Can you do it on a normal android/IOS/Windows RT tablet?
Let say you can buy a normal x86 windows tablet, which tablet can you get at a cheap price? how much?

Gaming on a big and not so portable laptop is not the same as gaming on a lightweight laptop. There are pros and cons.
Howbout you want to play a not so heavy games(HD4000 is enough) on an airplane? take out a 15" laptop and play games on it in an airplane?
Suddenly you want to check your presentation slides in a cab. Take out a 15" laptop in a cab?
How inconvenient is that compared to a 10" tablet.

So, now I'm asking you.
Why would anyone buy a laptop such as the Acer S7 11.6" that cost $1199?

Why would anyone buy a laptop such as the Toshiba Protege Z930 that cost $1,479?

They can't do much gaming on it. But they still bought it.

A normal word documents or presentation can be easily worked on, on a Windows 8 x86 tablet using its touchscreen for the mouse and keyboard, no?

OMFG a 25% difference in performance is big by every definition of the word. Why the fuck did you mod your 640 to 650 speeds if you dont agree?

Those ultrabooks are also not touted as gaming machines, and generally a large chunk of the costs in those expensive ultrabooks is big SSD drives and quad cores unlike a useless 64gb SSD with a wimpy dual core like the razer machine. Man your comparisons...

Im done talking to you its impossible.

Those laptops can be had for around $1100, so that's not a very good comparison.

The ASUS laptop I listed above was a good comparison for a similar price, and would kick the snot out of your pathetic "gaming" tablet. ;)
