Rage sucks

Well, This explains some of it. This game was disaster waiting to happen for us PC gamers....
http://kotaku.com/5847761/why-was-the-pc-launch-of-rage-such-a-cluster
"We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games," Carmack added. "That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version.
Self-fulfilling prophecy?

In other news:
"People like their PCs," said [Gabe] Newell. "There are huge numbers of them and each person gets to have the one that they like rather than the one that someone else has defined for them."

"There were 350 million PCs sold last year so the economies of scale are tremendous so you get great value for money," added Newell.

No, Borderlands was fun.

I feel that most of Borderlands' appeal came from a bigger focus on the RPG elements. Yeah, the shooting was pretty mediocre, but it brought tough enemies to the table, boss level enemies that were genuinely challenging, not just an endless deluge of samey human sized enemies that gradually increase in their ability to annoyingly absorb ten billion bullets. Also, the variety in the weapons and the character builds (the loot, in short) gave the gameplay a nice flavor in my opinion. It also had some interesting characters in the world, excellent voice acting and some good flavor to the story, at least in the General Knoxx DLC.

To be honest after spending about 2 days on this game, I'm starting to quite enjoy it gameplay and storyline wise, it is quite fun reminds me of Borderlands a bit (which this game was in development way before it). But the only killing the full enjoyment is the texture problem. Funny enough my spare 8800GTX runs this just fine at 4 x AA @ 1440x900 resolution.

Lets hope an ASAP patch comes out to add advanced in game graphics options, no screen tearing and that damn texture flickering problem fixed.

Yep, Carmack sold us out and as a result of it the PC version is an epic disaster. Way to go, ID and Carmack, your just as bad as every other gaming developer who sold out to PC and went down to the console path.

Honestly I doubt ID gives a shit less about our opinions. The facts are, they probably made more than enough to give the go ahead on a console version of Rage 2. This will follow Doom 4. They are probably hoping Doom 4 being the popular IP that it is will get all of us PC guys going back to consoles, but he's very much mistaken.

Damn, I have it running smoothly right now with only a few graphical glitches left. I am scared to install these in fear that it might screw it up worse.

You think you have it running well, but in reality, you have it running sharper. The textures are unchanged no matter what you do. The engine is terrible and (at least in this current incarnation) is highly based on the consoles. You won't change anything outside of a massive texture pack upgrade.

"We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games," Carmack added. "That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version. A high end PC is nearly 10 times as powerful as a console, and we could unquestionably provide a better experience if we chose that as our design point and we were able to expend the same amount of resources on it. Nowadays most of the quality of a game comes from the development effort put into it, not the technology it runs on. A game built with a tenth the resources on a platform 10 times as powerful would be an inferior product in almost all cases."
Shame, guess id is joining the other sellouts and taking the easy route to console land and it's easy to please shit talking 13 year old racist user base. Oh well. With Valve slowly making its way to consoles once the PC ports start dropping off and threatening Steam's livelyhood (they will be there soon enough with Steam making it's way to PS3), it won't be long before the PC is used for MMO's and Facebook games primarily. Long live the indies!

Though the real bullshit is console hardware creators who think 10-15 year cycles is a good move and effectively stagnate their own platform, taking down the PC platform by crippling it's one true advantage, the ability to stay current.

Funny. With that long of a development time, they could have optimized the engine for PC as well as consoles.
Their new technology was supposed to be scalable enough to bring out good visual to PC as well as console...what the hell happened.

I don't want to play FPS without KB&M.....so unless next gen has that, I'll stick with PC.

Borked drivers is what happened

I'm not so sure that the game will be super successful on consoles either. It's got stiff competition around the bend, plus the game itself really is so mediocre with minimal brand recognition (amongst console gamers) as well as hype that it very well could bomb there as well.

Ya, I agree with you here. Maybe they were able to launch a less buggy console version, but that still wont matter given how tedious the gameplay is and although I havent finished the game yet I imagine that it will have little to zero replay value. Like you said, it doesnt stand out as an above average game and not to mention I really think id, or any developer for that matter, underestimates just how many people game on their PC's.

Wow, all the Carmack hate is amazing. Look at it this way. He basically said they tried to do things different, it didn't work out the way they expected, and they're going to switch back to focusing on the PC first like they had been doing prior to Rage. They took a gamble and it went sour on them. If Rage ends up being the one Id house title out of how many awesome games that isn't up to the gamers' expectations then that's better than having a history of nothing but mediocrity. If you're going to make a mistake it is better to make a really huge one and learn from it than to make a lot of lesser ones and never learn anything. Once all the, pardon my expression, rage dies down over this perhaps people will realize this and start looking forward to the next title, which is certainly going to have to be one hell of a killer game if it's going to please this crowd. ;)

I just hope to god and all that is holy that Doom 4's primary platform is the PC. I know back in June Carmack even said that he made a mistake using the consoles (360 primarily) as the grounds to make Rage. So hopefully this means Doom 4 will be worked on the PC first and foremost.

Haven't Doom 4 been in development for the past year or two?

Doom 4 will be PC exclusive as well as available copies for the two consoles.

From the article that I mentioned earlier in a post back a few pages, Carmack promised two things for Doom 4:

Rage is there first game based on ID Tech 5 game engine which was both a new experience and learning process for the developing team, things will be much different with Doom 4, as Carmack promised that Doom 4 will feature up to 10x the graphics of the average modern game graphics we have today on the PC, it will be at least 5x as optimized and polished as Rage is (should of been in this case).

With Rage locked at 60fps, Doom 4 will be locked at 30fps for a more smoother gameplay, but Multiplayer will be locked at 60fps to ensure smooth gameplay with heaps of action going on in one room. ID Tech 5 game engine is a fairly new and groundbreaking game engine to work with.

Carmack at one of the E3 speeches few years ago promised that original Doom fan's will enjoy the future Doom as much as Doom 3, where Doom 4 will not be a reboot of the original series or continuing the story of Doom 3.

P.S I'm trying to find the news articles where I read this from.

I'm very disappointed with how this game turned out...well i guess it's just another bad console port....I'll look to the bargain bin for this one!

Just beat the game. Overall i'd say its a great game. There are nagging issues with the game however. Quality control with the pc version aside the biggest gripe I have with the game is the over use of area's. Hey go clear this area for this, come back to quest giver and then have another guy tell you to go back in and get something else. I went into the game not expecting a great story. id have never been one for great stories in their game.

As far as the ending goes:

(highlight below to see)

The lack of final boss battle left me unimpressed. The final battle consists of you running thru corridors and activating switches. The final room involves you pressing a button waiting 2 minutes then pressing more buttons till finally a cut scene triggers and game ends. You fight waves of mutants, all exactly the same. They all go down fairly easily using the BFG. Yes the BFG makes a come back in this game and its severely overpowered lol. After the final cut-scene (which btw is awesome) the game cuts to credits and then kicks you back to the main menu. It would have been nice to include an option to start the game again with all the stuff you gathered from the previous playthrough, similar to borderlands.

Overall, I'd say its worth the $60 bucks. There are parts in the game that are very well done. Prime example is the first time you go to the Dead City. I haven't experienced such excellent game play since I first played Half-Life 2. The game does have an eerie familiarity with Half-Life 2 though. Drones following you around just like the camera's in half-life 2 for example.

As for a rating? I'd give it a 85%. Good solid old school fps mixed with RPG elements gives way to excellent gameplay. Only reason I didnt score it higher was the lack of quality control on the pc release. Definitely worth the price I paid, especially at 16.7 hours (according to steam) for 1 playthrough. I have yet to delve into the multiplayer co-op however, so that score is based solely on the single player campaign.

This has got to be some of the worst textures I've seen in a "modern" game.

The character and gun models are pretty good, but the environment textures are AWFUL!!

I think this game is fun.
Sometimes it can be a little tedious, but the game play is damn fun, graphics issues aside.
Parts are outrageous and other parts suck, graphically......so what.:D

It's fun to play. It's what I expected, minus the graphical suckage.

I heard Doom 4 is now or might be Xbox 360 exclusive.

^^
Ummm... what? Source would be nice.

Same "source" as this comment:

It's the engine bro, drivers only exposed the faulty engine further.

How do we know if it's the actual engine's problem? Really?

Can you qualify either of your statements? I know you have a serious hard-on against this game but enough already.

Aren't we about due for a third dedicated rant thread from you about this game this week?

I am really enjoying this game and I can't believe so many people have their panties in a twist over it. I'm playing it on a core 2 duo OC'd from 2.16 > 2.5 and a GTX 260m on my G60VX and it looks great and runs far smoother then anything else that looks similarly good. Oh and I'm running the latest Beta Verde laptop driver from over a month ago. Is it just the faulty ati drivers that are getting everyone's panties in a twist or?

Damn those grahics remind me of Sin 1 or Half Life 1 except the sky/clouds and hand/gun look great.

The sky does NOT look great in game, trust me. It's like a fucking painting; beautiful when you're standing still, but it just sits there motionless.

The game runs pretty well so far, no texture popping since I installed the new ATi drivers, but I'm still getting some insanely blurry/mundane textures that look like shit. Anyone know the specific .CFG edit fix for this? Or is this confirmed as something we'll need to wait for Bethesda to release the patch for?

Per your image: My game here looks a bit better than that. Have you bothered trying any of the tweaks?

I have tweaked the hell out of the game and pretty much eliminated the texture pop-ins and made the textures as sharp as I can. The problem is the that the two indoor areas I have been in have horribly low textures and it is really distracting to me. Outdoor areas look pretty good for the most part, especially if you are not too close to anything.

Ditto. I'm thinking we're going to have to wait for Bethesda's official update to fix the low-res texture issues :(

Yea I can't help it but keep thinking to myself while playing, damn if this just could of looked better and that and this, it would of been a perfect shooter the game is awesomely fun and the lack of story isn't distracting, I find myself getting excited gowing from one shootout to another the weapons feel so satisfying.

a patch a driver and a texture pack and this game is easily a 8.5/10.

Forgetting about the graphics/performance/crashing issues, I just can't fathom how people in this thread keep saying that the gameplay is so great. What is so great about it? It's nothing we haven't seen in a hundred other shooters before. The arcadey handling in the driving sections is the only thing I would say is fun in the game. Aside from that it really is just another brown-grey FPS structured around ADS, firing from cover against basic human enemies (presumably until later on) with boring weaponry. Are Yahtzee and I the only two people on the planet who have grown tired of this mediocre gameplay model?

Oh well, I suppose the same people will be all over Uncharted 3's penis next month for its highly innovative gameplay and plot.
