Rage sucks

The AMD 11.10 Version 2 Preview Driver (10/7) + the Rage update today look to have fixed a lot of the experience on my system. Did a few races & killed a few bandits w/o any annoying artifacts or texture pop-in happening. - I can actually say I had fun playing just now.

For me, what's left is nitpicky about the game itself.... mostly the texture/detail stuff already mentioned everywhere.

I have had a couple crashes since installing the 11.10 drivers. And also still some artifacts on NPC's.

The new patch is a huge step towards improving the game. Anti aliasing, anisotropic filtering, and texture resolution still need some work. There's also some stupid key mapping issues that need to be fixed in the console. The gameplay is very tight if you can get past all of the technical issues so I hope they continue working on it.

There's plenty of good PC games ported from consoles that are top notch so I don't buy all of their stupid excuses. This is just another example of an unfinished game that was released too early and as a PC gamer I'm sadly accustomed to this. I don't blame anyone for giving up on Rage but there is definitely a best in class FPS buried under all of the crap.

Edit:

Actually, the version 2 crashed my game.

Well, now that I have made it to subway town, the pacing of the game has picked up and I have been in some nice firefights. I dont want to get my hopes up too much, but I definitely think the game is getting more fun as I progress. Still has a very lackluster story.

I've just finished defeating the big mutant boss at Dead City to get an upgrade to my chest, now doing errands for Sheriff Black...so far so good, but I wonder when retail is gonna receive the patch.

All versions use Steam. There is no "retail version".

Too little to late. Even if they can offer more video options and stability it still looks like the majority of the game uses textures from quake 3. Such a slap in the face to PC gamers. Did they think we wouldn't notice how horrible the textures look (besides character , vehicle) across the game? And the handsomely painted static sky?

Where the hell is the GPU transcode option now?

Really wish I had disabled Steam patching, it's made the game far worse for me.

I would suggest that this patch be applied when the default config file is in the game base folder. There could be many mods and config edits in circulation that the rage team didn't account for. For everyone having issues with the patch remove all edits in the .exe and restore the original config file, patch the game and then work from there. If you have steam then it will auto patch on top of what you have and may cause the problem. My best advice. Back up your save games and remove the game and re-download. Yes all 22 or so gigs worth. Might fix many issues. If it still gives you guys issues and removes your gpu transcode options, you may want to continue posting in a new thread titled

Rage and the rage patch sucks. LOL

When I first saw the sky I thought it looked pretty good. I was disappointed when I noticed that nothing was moving. If they could replace all the low-res crap it would blend in well with everything else, but I shudder to think how much more HD space the game would require then.

borderlands screwed rage in the ass from two years ago. seems like it is better in most every way.

Yeah, so true. When I first saw the trailers to Rage and saw the comments, everyone was like "lol borderlands, meh".

And I used to defend id. Boy do I look like a douche now. They nailed it lol.

That's real good advice.
I removed my very modest .cfg file from the game "base" file before I started Steam.
Mine were very small edits to the texture memory which seem to have been dealt with in the patch.
I kept my launch edits in that adjust FOV.

Now hopefully AMD gets their shit straight and releases a Crossfire profile.

All this stuff just makes me wonder what kind of PC hardware these guys used to test the game out before release, and who actually did the testing?

My kids could have told id the game looked bad in places and had textures popping in and out all over the place!

I guess the lesson learned over the past couple of months, with all these new releases.....don't try and play the game until it's been out for a week.........at least.

I was late to Borderlands, started it about 4-5 months ago and got to level 21.
I really like it but have been busy lately. Anyway when I saw the promos for Rage I thought "wow, this looks just like Borderlands"

Figured if Id is doing a new tech "Borderlands" type game it will be a must have for me.
I'm really disapointed that it is apparently all messed up.

The patch that came out sounds like it improved things somewhat.
If the patching continues and it gets fixed I'll probably get it but thanks to [H] I saved $60.

I never pre-purchase anymore. Just not enough incentives to do so nevermind you can get phucked royaly too.

Well I won't be playing RAGE till AMD fixes it, they killed my Serious Sam HD performance.

11.8 ATI
Eyefinity on TSE HD Unlimted 2xAT 4xAA =145 FPS on 6048x1200

11.9 ATI w/Rage Fix
Eyefinity on TSE HD Unlimited 2xAT 4xAA = 45 FPS on 6048x1200

I'm running 5970 on Water + 5870 (basically 5870 TriCore Crossfire). It's like 11.9's only see 1 core on the SamHD Games or something?

The latest "rage fix" drivers from AMD are actually 11.10 beta, and crossfire is disabled for everything.

I agree. Borderlands is simply more fun, has more going for it, and they choose their art direction and certainly handled it better than this has been.

Borderlands came out with some consolitis issues that people griped about got fixed pretty quick. Certainly any of that consolitis was a pale shade compared to this.

I like this game alright but if anything it's making me itch to want to replay Borderlands.

All this patch stuff so far reminds me of "lipstick on a pig."

We need another 20GB download to fix the blurry world of Rage.

Like some people have noted already, it seems our best bet for PC-oriented gaming will come out of Europe. Sure, a lot of times they are rough around the edges but at least games like Witcher 2 and Risen are keeping me from giving up PC gaming altogether.

Oh, guess I should mention 3D Vision is what got me back into PC gaming a couple years ago but I know how most people react when it is brought up here....

I'm not touching this for a couple months. Figured by then they may have their shit together, but so far everything has been nothing but a small series of stop gaps.

I am having issues with 11.9 and 11.10 special RAGE drivers.

I get ZERO frame rate with my 5800 class card with the above. i7-930 (8 core with hyper theading) windows 7 64bit with 6GB ram

11.8 works ok but crashes at loading new areas and some save games.
All my other games work great 60+ FPS. Cummon ATI/AMD.

No one expects proper game design or fresh ideas from id. The least you expect is a great engine, which scales across hardware and really shines. If id Tech 5 is a good engine, we have yet to see any proof.

I am able to run both the amd rage performance driver (11.9 I believe) as well as the 11.10 beta driver on my 5870. I had to do some tinkering last night but I now also have it running on my Sager NP8170 that has the 6990M using the amd rage performance driver package that they released on 10/4. Not really sure why you would get zero fps. Maybe try uninstalling your graphics driver completely. Boot into safe mode and use driver sweeper to get rd of any registry files that may be conflicting and then reinstall the 11.9 package. If that doesnt work then I really dont know what to tell you. I would get in contact with AMD if I were you.

Also, strangely enough it runs like 10 times better on the 6990m than on my 5870. I dont really know why since the 6990m is slower than the 5870. Possibly the driver for the 6990m is better because if that isnt it then I dont know what it could be.

Patching this game is like trying to get over the fact that the girl you just met on facebook looks like this in person:

Well after the rage patch and AMD driver 11.10 v2 I've managed to get a thoroughly enjoyable 3-4 hours of Rage, you dive in and get a lot of cool weapons quite fast and the upgrades and ammo types come rolling in thick and fast. There's a few interesting and highly fun area including appearing on a TV show which is a lot of fun.

The pop in is unnoticeable now, some areas especially at long distance get stuck on bad textures but it's pretty rare, I had to fix the fucking awful FOV and mouse acceleration and lack of console access in the default.cfg file but once all that was fixed the game is actually pretty enjoyable.

Now the big question is, all this took like a week to fix, why the HELL could they not simply do this for release? They could have gone from a universally bad reception on release to actually a pretty good one with only a weeks worth of work, or less. First impressions are so important and every game on the PC these days seems to release with stupid bugs that are trivial to fix, it's completely retarded.

Very good post P.F. I will guess that it has to do with a bigger problem. I'm gonna say it's a balance between development time and piracy. I think piracy is a big issue and many development houses are wanting to get their games out as quick as possible and then patch later. People who pirate games have a far harder time getting these patches. So my theory is they get the game out asap before it leaks on torrent sites anyway and when it does they are getting a shitty unpolished piece of shit anyway. They then patch the games for people that pay the price of admission.

The few companies that polish their gem until the time of release have sadly had their stuff leaked and piracy has run rampant on their IP's.

I know many feel that there are many that actually buy the game and few that pirate but it's that same belief that is making a small problem larger. Piracy is killing pc gaming. There are many pc gamers and the money to be made on pc is far less than on consoles. To my amusement piracy is running rampant on consoles so many of these development studios that have been punishing pc gamers by not releasing their stuff on pc's have been having their shit pirated and leaked too, I smiled at the gears of war 3 leak. :D

I don't really buy that, all the major games these days have pirate supported patches, the Rage patch was cracked almost immediately so pirates are getting a fairly 1:1 gameplay experience.

The problem I have with this idea in general is that people use piracy in order to actually test a game before buying, I did a questionnaire on piracy a while back and while only limited to 100 responses the overwhelming majority of people who had pirated games had done so to check to see if the game was worth buying in some form or another be it because of bugs/compatibility or just general gameplay.

Not really on topic, but I thought I should just say:

I thought to steer clear of this game on pc, didn't feel like spending 60 dollars to play it once with all these issues so I just rented it for PS3 from redbox. I have to say that even on PS3 the txture pop in is absolutely atrocious. I can barely even play because its so distracting.

This is after the game update and the install to the hdd.

So, it seems the issues with this game are just as bad on console, despite what I was lead to believe.
