Rage sucks

Damn, so showing one screenshot from a game that had the time to be heavily modded to a single screenshot of Rage is apples to apples? Wow... This must be the twilight zone, because I never wouldve thought my heroes Kyle and Steve would resort to such logic.

I think the Rage has taken over the usual hardcore, solid logic that I grew to love about the site. I'm just in shock really. Am I missing something? I want to understand this because it feels like I'm in an internet twilight zone. I'm half expecting Kyle/Steve to be like, "I was just kidding! The game isn't that fun but I was just exaggerating. I just said all that to get you guys all riled up."

I think Carmack stated in his keynote at QuakeCon that one of the big things he was upset with in Rage was the texture pop-in if you spin around.

I'm seeing conflicting reports though, it seems as if it varies from system to system and nvidia/amd. It's possible that drivers are actually causing the issue to be much more prevalent than it actually is.

That video that was just posted looked great, those textures on the rocks and everything in the distance was incredibly impressive.

It's also nice to see Beth/id responding so quickly with cvar fixes or anything, at least they still know who there audience is.

I'm sure we'll see some patching to fix some of the issues but it's a shame so many people will now completely write this game off based on a few people's opinions on this board.

I can't think of a game, pc exclusive, console exclusive or multi-platform that hasn't launched with issues, even large ones in years. It happens and it'll eventually be fixed.

I think what is happening on this site is just a microcosm of what is happening in society. You must have one extreme opinion or the opposite, and if you don't, those extremes will either ignore you or lump you in with the side they don't like and attack you anyway.

That's not to say Rage is a perfect game or that it doesn't have issues, but as is typical here the hyperbole is incredible.

I pretty much fixed all of the texture pop-in and got the textures as high as I can get them on my 480GTX. Things look okay from a distance but the textures up close look very bad. That Doom 3 compare picture is pretty much spot on.

Here is a 1080p video on my HD5870 running almost perfectly. No artifacting or graphical glitches and very minimal graphic pop ins. The video looks a little jerky but thats just from capturing the video with fraps in 1080p. The gameplay is smooth as glass and looks damn good too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0zqhVhGupA

Notice the video description says

"After several hours of researching and tweaking with RAGE I was finally able to get it running on my HD5870 with almost no graphical errors or screen tearing. I was not able to fix my mouse issue on the menu screens where the pointer movement is not fluid and has more of a jerky movement, however it does not perform that way during gameplay so I can live with it".

I guess we will have to "live" with it. .....

Well how does it look from a distance in Doom3? When I played Doom3 it was near release and didn't look this good. So I don't have a good point of comparison. But when you looked far out in the distance in Doom3 were the textures looking much better still?

That was my thoughts as well. I tried to explain it in an earlier post but your wording is much much better. I was wondering if I was the only one who noticed this.

The only issue that I wasnt able to get rid of was having this jerky bad tracking mouse effect on any menu screen. However it doesnt seem to happen during actual gameplay so I can overlook that. Having to jump through hoops for a whole day just to get the game to be playable is ridiculous. One of the worst game launches in a long time.

I didnt say anyone else had to live with anything. What I was saying is that considering all of the other issues are finally resolved and that the jerky mouse movement doesnt affect the gameplay at all is something that is easy for me to live with. Its not worth spending several more hours troubleshooting for something so minor. I dont know what you thought I meant?

Sorry, I can't tell you much about how things look from a distance in Doom 3 - my flashlight wasn't bright enough!
:p

Seriously though, it would be cool to see a high-res texture pack come out for this. I think I might put this on the back burner for a while to see how things progress with this game.

You still have textures loading (pop-in as others call it). Look in the upper left and right later on. Mainly, at the bridge and rocks is when you should noticed it. This is within the first 10 seconds.

Dead Island was far worse.

FAR worse

Well of course. There isnt going to be a way to get rid of the texture loading completely. Thats just the game engine. I was simply showing how much I have been able to improve on the texture loading. Its hardly even noticeable.

Any game using UE3 has the texture crawl-in effect when loading up a map/level. Having a fast SDD or raided HDD's never really made much a difference. Noone complained about that but everyones making a mockery of Rage because of this.

I just don't understand. [H] can waste time posting about this and taking ss's but they couldn't do a proper Witcher 2 review which is probably the biggest PC release since like 2008.

We are all starting to sound like snobs. We are better than our 13 year old console playing brethen! We are the PC Elite. Duh, :p

I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to be looking at in the Doom 3 comparison picture. I probably took 10 minutes and still wondered "what am I looking for"? :D

I had to read someone's post below the picture, mentioning the pipe (plumbing?) on the wall. Then I was like "oooooohhhh yeeeeeeeeeeah".

Boy, what does that say about me? Don't answer that. XD

Did you see how bad the pop in textures were that people were experiencing at launch? It was more than a minor issue. It was awful. Anyone who paid $60 for an unplayable game has a right to complain about it.

*Raises hand

I've been complaining about UE3 texture streaming for years....

Dicking around with the vsync and triple buffering controls in the catalyst control center made the game a little more stable, but it is still crashing from time to time, and I'm seeing a moderate amount of artifacting on some NPCs.

Indeed. I voiced similar thoughts in the 'kyle sucks bla bla bla' thread. There has been a trend that has developed on this website (And with society in general) in the past couple of years where opinions must only be one extreme or the other.

I would love to know if John Carmack will grant a interview and answer the tough questions about this blunder. Rage seems like a good game that was done a huge injustice by it's developers. Piss poor console port?

I really hate to throw out the accusation of any game being a console port. I can recall doing so only a few times in the past, whereas many people on this forum instantly jump to that accusation when there is any little problem. However, with this game, I feel confident in stating that this game is pretty obviously a console port. id has, of course, stated that consoles were their focus during development, and JC actually suggested (I think at QuakeCon?) that he felt a sharper focus on PC may have been appropriate.

So yeah...all signs point to a console port, and given the glitches, crashes, and texture nonsense...a lame one. Obviously not everyone is having a problem with this game, but I cannot remember the last time a game was so wonky at launch. The testing systems we operate always have fresh installs of Windows. They are as pristine as can be, and still there are problems.

As far as Carmick giving an interview to talk about it. Fat chance. And if by some celestial apoplexy he did, I think chances are not good that he would even admit an error has been made.

Did you guys read interviews like this?

You guys seem to be surprised that this is a console port.

"In game development, you have to tailor your gameplay to where you expect people to play it on," he added. "So, while we're developing Rage on the PC, we forbid anybody from playing it on a keyboard and mouse until we've played it first on a console controller. We pull the keyboard and mouse out and put in a USB 360 controller, even on the development staff. That's not just the testers."

Maybe instead of bitching and moaning throw some pc developers a bone. Go play Xenus 2 White Gold or Precursors and support the developers that develop pc games.

Again, I think it would be a benefit to everyone here to know of your results if you swap out the ATI card for a nvidia, and if that removes your problems. My guess is that it will.

I'll get to it eventually, and I definitely wouldn't be surprised to see it work better on a GeForce.

So then why bash on the game itself when the drivers are likely the culprit?

I remember when Farcy came out and had horrible issues on Nvidia cards until nvidia updated their shit. We weren't bashing Crytek for nvidia's failings though.

Because I don't believe the game will be magically perfect on a GeForce. I said it might be better, not fixed. And as the texture streaming/transcoding is a part of the engine, I don't think a true FIX can ever come from the video driver.

And aside from that, I'm not bashing anything. I'm expressing my opinion.

I do agree that nothing will fix some of the low-res textures. The streaming issue that happens when one turns fast is fixed for the vast majority of Nvidia users if they create that folder under /local (Which I surmise should have been created during install) which allows the cache file to be written.

Checkpoints have been in games for a long time...I mean HL had an auto save. D2...auto save. Company of Heroes...auto save after finishing a map. Why are we spoiled with auto saves?

Hell serious sam had save points right before brimstone (Walkers) and earthquakes (galloping of the Kleer) filled your aural sense and tried to de-badify Sam Stone. All this from an INDIE game (Thanks Croteam!)

Whoa thats one of the most amazing character models I have ever seen. Just beautiful.

They reaaaallly went all out with the females... ;)

Truthfully while some areas look like crap, if you are PLAYING the game it's not really all that terrible.

It's a mediocre game experience at best with an engine that has potential.

Thought it had fixed mine too, but started happening again after a few minutes of playing. :(

Steam actually honoured my pre-order cancellation (no refund, just a store credit), which was nice. Only writing this, because I was rambling about it in an earlier post here. Props to Steam (Valve) for this.

I just received a response from Steam about a refund as well. They are giving me a credit to the Steam wallet. In the grand scheme of things, this will be a buy later down the road when it is sub 20$. Despite all the issues, most are relatively resolved except for popping. I am still having it. I just can't stand it. Just a little pop takes the immersion away. I may be fickle, but I can't help it. :(

Hope the game is fun for everyone else!

Yeah I suppose your right. My mind usually jumps to old Bioware and Black Isle games when thinking of old school games and those really didn't have checkpoints. Still though checkpoints are a lot closer together these days. We're not used to being forced to quick save a lot.

Except in games like Dead Island where the checkpoints seem completely random and far between. Then it would really be nice to have a quick save feature.

It barely happens with my system, similar to yours but far less and noticable. The only change that made the best modification was for texture streaming by setting the page image size to 8k. I really do not have that much of an issue with the game as others are.

This fixed my friends texture pop up issue almost entirely : +vt_maxPPF 16 , adding that to the short cut for the game. Not sure if you've tried it or not Kyle.

This setting should not be used unless:+vt_maxPPF XX
A substitute for the "GPU Transcode" option, if it's not available in your video options menu. Both options compensate for a GPU bottlenecked by the CPU. Those with a dual core machine or similar should use a value of 8; for something a little better, try 16.

I think there are too many people throwing cvar's and not knowing what they mean and why it is good or not good to use them. For instance, if I make a cache directory my performance decreases. Actually, increasing the texture size made the game better with texture loading delay. The only configurations I use is swapinterval, pageimage size (only the recommended settings from Bethesda), transcode is enabled, 16x AA, and m_smooth.

Yes, the game engine loading textures the way that it was designed to do so is not a graphical artifact. I was able to eliminate the random graphical artifacts as well as the terrible screen tearing that was going on, but I cant change the way the game engine was designed to render textures.
