Rage sucks

You gotta give the audience a compelling reason to play the game. Rage missed the mark here... most people simply don't care about the main character or what is going on. Blame the writers, maybe? The game might've been better had they not TRIED to make a compelling dialog?

Whatever, it's not really worth discussing any further, the game was a let down and nothing much will change that now.

Anyone expecting anything resembling a good story from an id game must never have played any id games.

Yes, but the fact that they also missed the mark on the technical aspects of the engine, the mechanics/gameplay and ESPECIALLY on the multiplayer makes me wonder what I SHOULD have been expecting from this particular id game other than a waste of 21GB on my SSD.

It has a better story than Quake/Doom at least. Oblivion/Fallout it is not though. Then again for a shooter I think it is very good. Really if the game mechanics in this were in Fallout I think that would be game of the decade for me.

I expected more from a game that featured MegaTextures in it...the sky looks unbelievable until you realize it's just a static non-moving picture...

The gameplay is perfectly fine. There is absolutely nothing majorly wrong with how it plays. I'd much rather have them stick to a slightly older school style than the new shitty FPS style. I wish they hadn't done that bullshit regenerating health thing, but at least the guns feel good. Also fuck multiplayer.

So............it's still depressing that a 2005 game, even with a texture pack, can outdo a brand new release in places.......

That said, Rage has some excellent graphics in places, but overall scene after scene Doom3 can still look better.

Not really, when you consider how talented some of the people in the mod community are for various games. Two examples come to the top of my mind immediately are:

Crysis 1 with all the community packs installed looks as good as Crysis 2 in many parts. At least pre the high-definition//dx11 release.

GTA4 for the PC with some of the add-ons like SNB or whatever its called for ultra-realistic traffic, cars, enhanced textures, time-of-day-lighting mods and other effects. I wouldn't be all that surprised if they made a brand-new GTA5 game this year and GTA4 with all the mods on the PC was substantially better than the new GTA5 on the PS3/xbox 360; graphically speaking. Mind you, if GTA5 comes out for the next generation of consoles, I'd hope its better than modded GTA4 on PC. It's hard to say though till we know the specs of ms/sony's next gen console and how many year it is till it comes out.

Amazing with this being a new engine and all that the skybox is totally static, looks nice when you first see it in the wastelands, then you realise nothing ever moves. :(

A 21 gig installation and im left wondering where the fuck all this data is going, as the vast bulk of it is Textures. Some are just compressed to the point that theres zero detail in them anymore, and more blocky artifacts than actual Texture.

So what do you guys who have purchased the game think the right price point is for this one?

It still has so many bugs that I wouldn't recommend it anyone, at least not at its state. If it were bug free I would say no more than $30 and thats being generous.

Is there a mod that re-writes the storyline in GTAIV? I'm sure it has a better story than Rage, but it was pretty piss-poor from the handful of hours I spent in the game.

Going into the bathroom and txting a girl while taking a dump is more "story" than anything Rage could even DREAM of concieving.

Crude, but true. Though that's fine. I don't understand why people are being so bitchy about Rage's lack of story. Its like they've never played an id game and expected a story. That's like expecting anything but shitty writing from Bethesda stories.

Bethesda has good lore in game, but fails to deliver when it comes to plot writing.

Though, like you say, id games usually have stories like "Invasion, people die!" and "Find yellow key card!!".

Although they really dropped the ball on rage I do think that this new engine has some good potential.

I'd like to see what it could do with a game designed as a PC killer and not a good looking console title.

In all fairness, though, Bethesda's games are almost always huge, open and non-linear. The plot line has to be a little loose.

GTAIV's dlcs had considerably better storylines IMO especially Ballad of Gay Tony.

LOL well maybe it was just me but I hated Rage. I couldn't even FORCE myself to re launch it and try to beat it. Not since like N64 and some of those crude 3rd party games in the 90's has that happened to me.

Thats how I felt about Duke Nukem Forever. I played about an hour and and then turned it off and never started back up.

I finished it tonight.

I am extremely disappointed in the fact that by far the best looking part of the game (Jackal Canyon) is right before the end. Yes, a lot of the game looks like shit and I had to stop playing a few times because my immersion was completely destroyed (pretty much the only reason it took me this long to finish it).

There were a few bright points in the game - unlimited inventory, the racing and upgrading of cars, the sound, the gun play, the constructable items, mini games, Jackal Canyon and Mutant Bash TV, the animations.

The bad - the story (yes it is an id game), the ending (or lack thereof as the game just ends), music was overly repetitive, the lifelessness of the world (all the NPCs are static), the graphics and textures (even though sometimes the graphics would allow for some nice eye candy), the auto-detect graphics not working and a lack of graphical options to use as a work around, no object interactivity, weapon balance toward the end of the game needs work (some guns are completely useless while others are insanely overpowered - pop rockets destroy everything).

This really isn't a spoiler but more of a warning. Some of the characters in town were giving rumors that there was going to be an epically awesome end boss fight. You are given a Pulse Gatling gun with BFG rounds. I was saving my BFG rounds expecting a Serious Sam level of boss. I was playing through the last level and then the game went to a cut scene out of no where. I had to actually go back and load a previous save because I ended up not using the BFG at all :(.

It was a 3.5/5 from me as a PC game. The game could have easily been a 4.5/5 with a few minor changes and better textures.

can someone post the god damned original unpatched exe you can make the command line and cfg tweaks actually work and the game was good, i never ran the original unmodded and didnt think it was super bad, it wasnt a stroke of genius but it wasnt THAT bad but this fucking patch just bum raped the game

uhmm, re-download Rage through steam and have the option of "not allow the game update to the latest version".

This is basically how I feel about the game myself. Way more balanced and realistic POV vs the viral marketing I just responded to in between giggles in the Rage is Awesome thread.

It's pretty simple: If Rage weren't marketed as this revolutionary new game with thrilling choices and stunning visuals, this would actually have been a pretty decent game. Not $60 decent though

I wasn't even aware it was marketed as that. I've completely ignored the game until like a week prior to release and only paid enough attention to know it was coming out. People pay too much attention to marketing and PR bullshit and get too hyped about games. Though I can't say I don't do the same for some games.

Correct although even if the hype had been down this thing came out in a pretty bad form.

Subpar graphics by even VERY forgiving standard and glitchy as hell. It's a BAD console port which usually sucks but coming from the likes of id is downright unforgivable.

I loved Borderlands so I like this game alright. Like I said I agreed with that earlier post I quoted but overall to me Borderlands did "this" better.

Well, most of the character models and some of the weapons and landscapes actually look really good with the high detail on this new engine. What looks like shit is the that they skimped on the walls, floors and ceilings on almost every area. Once that texture pop in effect got fixed I could see the potential in this new engine. I think as it matures its actually going to look very nice and detailed, The thing that irritates me about rage that it could have been so bad ass if not for all the bugs/glitches.

i just started playing last night and have a few quick thoughts

graphics are great in some areas, and crappy in others. in one area you can have some really nice high resolution textures while the shoe box, gas can and other small objects are a blurry, muddy mess with no texture resolution. the outdoor environments are great with some nice lighting. the characters suffer a bit as well from pretty low polycounts and lower resolution textures. they feel a bit soft and muddy

i've played for about an hour and half and the gameplay was pretty bland to be honest. i have no problem with the quest type structure of the gameplay, however, it is pretty annoying when you've lost sight of what your original objective is because you're being sent back and forth between NPCs who have requests. they are generally small and quick requests that aren't hard to accomplish, however, they slow the story and don't really add much of anything. I just find myself trying to rush through meaningless tasks. hopefully it will pick up a bit

Agreed.

I think that the mega texture technology is really neat, the idea of having way more unique textures around the world sounds like a fairly unimportant thing to strive for but it comes across with eerie realism that makes the world feel a lot more genuine somehow.

The real problem is that up close the textures are low resolution for the most part and that's a big hit. I think I'd prefer a game world 1/10th the size (typical corridoor shooter) but with 20Gb of ultra high resolution textures.

If they took 20Gb of textures and crammed that into an indoor shooter like Doom4 and upped the average resolution of objects, and managed to keep a lot of the areas looking unique then that would be really amazing.
