R580 new pics/specs

imho, memory bandwidth is whats limiting the x1600xt now.

that seems to hold true for all the 600 series gpus from ATI. Like the 9600xt. It was a great card for what it was, but it really needed more bandwidth :(

Unconfirmed info has X1900XTX doing over 10,000 in 3D05 at 1280/1024, with a 3GHz A64. Still think if upgrading now prevents you from upgrading in 6 months time then you are silly but hey.....

OKAY

What I get from the bottom of this page is that qualification samples (X1900XTX) were sent out to reviewers on or before Dec. 22nd, and it went into production on Dec. 30th. December 30th- January 24th is only 25 days. Does this seem like enough time to do a Hard launch? Maybe someone is aware of how long it took the X1800XT to go from volume production to launch, and could comment?

EDIT: Retracted comment about the 3dmark score/ Apologizes to Maniac :eek:

Over 10,000? :eek: Every time I hear about supposed benchmarks from the x1900 series it makes me wish I knew all the info about it. Knowing for sure when it'd launch would be great :p

The only thing I don't like about benchmarks like these in general is that they always seem to use a top-of-the-line processor. I've got to wonder how an R580 might fare on a processor like my Opteron 148, or even if it might be limited by the CPU at all... :confused:
Remember that is running at 1280 x 1024 and not the defualt 1024 x 768 :cool:

And it's much more than 10k, it was over 11k and the proc wasn't even all the way up to 3Ghz. Either way :eek: :eek: :)

imo, 1 month is enough to hard launch. At least enough to do a gtx 512 style hard launch ;)

Well, for the record I'll say that the 512 was a disappointment. Especially if true that they're (nVidia) is now referring to it as a "Limited Release". If that was the intention from the beginning, then that should have been divulged at launch.

I hope ATI is able to pull off a hard launch, just wanted someone maybe with more knowledge than me about production vs. availability to comment.

Depends on the size of their fabs I would assume. I would think that they could produce several thousand gpu's per day, then again, thats just an estimate. Im sure someone can answer better than I can :p

These things really need to benchmarked at higher resolutions. Glad to see they've at least done some at 1280x1024.

Ugh, they really need to drop the Radeon brand name and start with something fresh. Talk about a chance for a fresh start. Of course, the same could be said for the Geforce brand name.

sabrewolf732 said:
uh huh :rolleyes: Since these cards are out, with official drivers, we know you can accurately make that statement.

Well, I'm curious about the 7900GTX, but it looks like march on the launch. Plus it's going to have 16 ROP's according to rumour. I guess the question is whether raw pixels or pixel operations is going to be the king in the next 9 months worth of game releases. I wish nVidia would do something about the inability to do HDR + AA with this release, but I guess that'll have to wait for the G80- if then.

I agree, the radeon name always seemed to me to sound like something that you'd need to check for in the basement. And that could cost big bucks to deal with. :p
And same goes for the geforce. But of course, anything the marketers come up with to replace these will undoubtedly make things worse- aka Intel: Leap Ahead **makes vigorous jacking off gesture**

Guys it doesn't matter what side of the fence your on this is going to be a dream year for hardware

R580= 48 pipes
G71= 32 hard pipes
G80= ???????? pipes
R600= 64 unified pipes
Blu ray
HD DVD
Yonah
Merom
Conroe
Vista
Oled keyboards. :eek:

I think Blu ray and HD DVD should be removed because I know plenty of people that don't want to see those come soon and I am one of them.

It's great go ahead and let the two standards mature but I am fine with regular DVD's I don't want my movies on HD or blu ray.

Put them up side by side against a good dvd and player the difference is bleh for the money and drm? No thanks you can have it.

I don't know about dropping the Radeon name, but they should drop some marketing folks. Internally, ATI has a great numbering system that, well until recently, made a lot of sense. We all know what R100, R200, R300 meant. Different generations of cards. With the advent of the second generation, ATI hopped up to 8500. They bypassed several generations of possible numbering in doing this. The next gen, they went to the 9 thousands and then were forced to come up wtih something else. They add an x and drop the numbering down to the hundreds. Once again, however, they start on an 8, so they give themselves limited bandwidth to move forward with. Current gen, they add an X and put a 1 in front of the card.

It's pretty bad when even an enthusiast has no hope of keeping track of all the damn cards. You now have (and there are probably tons of errors here because I can't keep track of them) x300, x300 Pro, x600, x600 pro, x600xt, x700 128, x700 256, x700 pro, x700xt, x800, x800xl, x800gto, x800gt, x800xt, x800 PE, x850 pro, x850xt, x850xt pe, x1300, x1300 pro, x1600, x1600 pro, x1600xt, x1800xl, x1800, x1800xt, x1800xt PE and now will have x1900, x1900xl, x1900xt, x1900xtx. It's simply ludicrous. To make things worse, now that ATI have chose the x1900 monicker, any budget cards that are made will necessarily have to fall into the range of the existing low end cards. Not to mention the fact that the vast majority of those low end cards can't even keep up with a 9700 pro or 9500 pro.

ATI seriously needs to come up with better branding. The numbering should indicate the card generation and also where the card falls in relation to the product line. My guess is that they are worried about doing this in case they might hurt sales of leftover stock of the last generation of cards. They need to band their heads together and come up with something better than the mess above.

I agree, its getting a bit wacky.
When you come out whit a new gen, KISS rule is a must.
Also I think it's stupid to have cards in the current X1000 gen, such as the X1300~ X1600~ that perform like that the cards with the same 2nd digit branding in the last.

The X is the Roman numeral for 10, so an X800 is a 10800, and a X1800 is a 11800, they continued the scheme ;)

...wouldn't that be 101800?

And if the X is a roman numeral, then the X1800XL is really 10180040. LOL :p

I understand that you can't talk about whether you guys have an X1900, NDA and all. Of course if you didn't have one, and didn't have the NDA that went along with it, you'd tell us..... right?

Maybe you could just answer my question about the feasibility of going from volume production to launch in 25 days? hmm?

If not, then I'll just assume you have the X1900, signed the NDA and all is well with the universe. :)

Chris_Morley said:

Well technically yes ;) But that's the only way the numbering system makes sense :p Either that or they just went batty.

I can tell the difference between my geforce 4 and a geforce 5 or 6 or 7 but I sure as hell can't tell that those pics are really of a X1900 probably a x1800 since there are no markings.

The benchmarks of the card if true looks like I am stuck with Nvidia unless they can pull of some miracle tweaking.

...wouldn't that be 101800?

even though they did not follow suit with the rest of name in roman numerals it wouldn't be that

X1V, isn't 1015, its 16, so X1800 would be 11800, thats what they were trying to go for with the naming scheme, and i agree it works, looks cleaner too, but it doesn't even come up on my rador of "give-a-damn"

So they just added some things to the X1800XT ? Now it's a X1900 bam?

+newer pcb design(i believe they changed it slightly for better power management), more pixels per pipe, maybe a newer process to give better results on cores

its kind of like how they added some stuff to a 6800 and called it a 7800, like the ability to do TR SS/MRAA, extra 4pixel shaders, higher clocks, better ram

Dunno what you're trying to ask. I think what you're asking is how do you know if its an x1900xt by looking at it? A easy way to tell by looking at it is by the amount of phase power boxes.

Hey I am not saying nvidia or ati are bad for just adding something and giving it a new name hell I have two 512mb GTX's with just more memory and higher clocks than a regular one I just can't see the difference in the posted pics. The way I could tall a 512mb card from a regular gtx was the quadro cooler hehe.

Humble_Magii, The R580 has 7 phase power to accomodate the larger core, which has number of ALUs increased from 16 to 48. Given that the cooler is the same as the R520 you obviously can't tell its different because you can't see the core. No offense mean't but why does this thread keep going OT with respect to naming schemes and card appearance? As 3D geeks isn't it performance we are interested in?

Well people have a point in the naming scheme because it can make discussing and comparing a diffcult issue and this is a forum so I can understand where people are coming from.

Yes you are correct everyone is concerned about performance but probably since there is little info out there not much to discuss about YET... :p

well...the thread title DOES state "R580 new pics/specs"

since it has pics in there...I'd think that justifies the topic of appearence. But then again, everyone's interpretation is different I suppose. :p

I personally like how they are keeping the card looking the same, it was introduced withe X850 and is still the same on the X1900, with no new radical cooling solution or experimental heatsink design we can rely on that system at least

Even if they are wrong that line made the link worthwhile.

Impressive specs, I can see why ATI wants someone to develop some tools/apps that use this power to accelerate general computing.

And about the naming scheme- some people (myself included) just trying to inject some humor. If you don't think it's funny, then don't laugh. Please don't freak out about the thread going OT. I have put the absolutely on topic part of this post in bold to draw attention to it.

i just payed 200 bucks for an X800 that runs fear good. why do i need FOURTY-FUCKING-EIGHT pipelines.

Obviously, because it's NEW AND IMPROVED!!!

...and stuff. Seriously, though, I'm with you on this one. If R580's going to be overshadowed by ATI's Spring offerings, it makes me wonder just how crazy things are going to be with the new generation.

The more that I think about R580 the more I'm against springing for it. I think I'm going to wait until Spring so that I can at least get a DX 10 card.
