R580 new pics/specs

Pretty cool, Im getting an ATI card tommorow, but I still don't believe the specs, I wanna see some benchmarks.

And please for the love of god, don't turn this into a flame war!

For such a significant upgrade I thought they'd be using a more elaborate cooling system. Or at least change the damn sticker on it so it "appears" more powerful. The painted flames make it go faster. :p

Does the coin in the last photograph come with the card? Does it void warranty to get it out? :p

But seriously...

We saw this with the R520 release - there is no definate proof that that sort of performance will be achieved. I'd love to see it come out with that but, it would be good for ATi (not to mention gamers/enthusiasts). I only hope that they can deliver on this release.

damnit - i don't want to be outdated that quickly.. grrrrr

man... new technolgy... too soon ;)

I agree Ati could have milked out the X1800XT for a couple of months more, it's a good seller because it's the only 512Mb card out there which is affordable and good available, but I think Ati wants the performance crown back. :) Even if that's only for a couple of months, it's good for their reputation.

Of course, because more people are buying the nVidia cards because they see all the people saying they're much faster... too many people rely on word of mouth.

the inq was claiming that the yields were not as good as ATi wanted

The inq claims a lot of things...

ATi would be crazy not to release the card asap. It would be good for their image to beat nVidia, even if for a short while. And Crossfire will help that no end.

See post #2.

true but ATI needs a smooth solid launch. When reviewers have there cards, Big name retailers need to have cards as well. Another thing is there flagship card needs to have good yeilds, lastly it better be a better card in real world tests IE Games, not shitty ass 3dmark
:D

I LOVE PROGRESS!!

I wonder what the power requirement is for that many transistors?

I'm definitely excited about this. I'll need something to help with the higher resolutions on my 2405.

This is just... amazing. IDK why but it seems like whoever has the most powerful card is the better company at that time, so this will be good for ATI. I hate that though, for some reason let us call them "less involved" consumers seem to think that all of whatever companies cards are castly superior if their high-end beats the other's high-end.

glad I never dropped the money on a x1800 card like I was planning ;)

hopefully the prices won't be through the roof on these though...if they're about the same as the x1800's were when they came out, I think I'd have to jump on it :p

The specs in that comparison pic seem to point to a very significant performance jump, but what the hell do I know. I look forward to the benchies for on that day...my production at work will be severly lessened. Nice to know that their current cooling solution is in need of no change whatsoever.

I just hope it at least makes half the noise it does today. The fan's whiny noise is awful. Thank God for Arctic Cooling Silencers. :p

i know this card will cost arm + leg thats why I got x1800xt. I cant imagine spending almost 700-800 dollars on one card which is what im willing to bet this card will cost just like the vaporware gtx 512mb.....if this card actually comes out soon! LOL. Im happy with my 10000 in 3dmark05 :D

I guess ill cancel my order for my second gtx 512 :) See how this card is.

Ati's stock cooling is bad. They use a full copper gpu with heatpipes and the fins are very dense. Then they screw up even more by using a punning little fans. As overclockers we know all copper sinks suck at low airflow but excell with high airflow.

Discrete flow control unit? Is this just a marketing term ATi's going to use to make it seem like it has 48 pipelines, or is this something that really has to do with the card.. if so can some one elaborate?

i'm wondering if its something they put on the card and what exactly it does

wow if this thing is all that it's cracked up to be.......then

hopefully ill have enough money to buy this when this thing comes out *crosses fingers and hopes for a raise* :p

That would be a good idea. Only two weeks away so you couldn't get your second GTX 512 by then. ;)

For all you guys wondering about the specs and flow control units and things like that you should pop over to the beyond3d.com forums http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=13

and just read some of the info. They have been kicking around the 48 shader unit thing for months over there, and what it means with regards to r520 and G71. While the 48 shader units are nice, we may not see games that can really take full advantage of that high of shader output for a while. This should be good for longevity of the card however.

uh no, depends on the spacing of the fins

ATI's stock cooling is better then zalmans best offering, its just loud, at full speed the ATI fan is very good

Separate sentance, thus separate statement.

those speeds look amazing, and I'm ready to go nVidia or ATi, I go with the market and I do my research damn well

but seriously though, with a GPU like that what CPU would allow for a non-bottlenecking experience?

a 4800 X2 overclocked to hell? screw that, a 280 dual core opteron with a 50% overclock :p

no if you were smart you wouldn't buy the x1800, you would wait for the x1900 to come out, then buy the x1800

Buying a top of the line video card that's so good it will be bottlenecked by top of the line processors (overclocked too) is a good thing.

It means you won't have to buy a new card for quite some time.

initial investment not worth it under the circumstances that morris' law claims in 18 months it will be worth half as much if sold new
