Well, i've done it. I never ever thought I would spend even close to this much money on headphones...

Ordered myself a pair of Grado SR-225s, which came to $170 shipped from TTVJ (+$9 for the 1/4" to 1/8" cable). I also puchased Audio Technica ATH-A700's for $130 shipped. I really wanted the A900, but aparently they don't sell those in the US, and I couldnt find a deal on them. I think the A700's will suit me though. They are for gaming, the grados are for music. My lowley HD497's... I don't know what I will do with them. They always suited me well, so I will be keeping them. May come in handy one day.

Needless to say, I am very excited for all my new goodies that are coming. The addiction has begun!

Sorry about your wallet. ;)

Hope you enjoy your new headphones. Be sure to post back here your first impressions

EDIT: FYI, you can get the A900s from AudioCubes.

heh, I am sorry for my wallet to. I know an amp is just a matter of time now :)

Far as the A900's go... its cool. I wouldnt have been able to afford both pair if I went with the 900's, and since music > gaming, id rather have spent the extra cash on the SR225's vs the 900's.

Quite. There is a dime in it... few delivery confermation slips though... and I told myself nothin goes on any cards until the next paycheck, but thats tomorrow.

lol, you have an amp for those right? :D

You better be on head-fi by now if you're buying up headphones at that rate.

Not yet. Couldn't afford one. The A700's don't need one, but the Grado's do. Even without though, they will be a huge step up from what I have now. Once I have the cash to drop on an Amp, there just gunna sound that much better :).

And I am on head-fi, but not active there. I used it for research, and thats about it.

great purchase! yeah, since being on head-fi I went from having my best pair of headphones as some senn pmx200's that I used for portable use... since then I've picked up some hd202's for my sister, some px100's just so I could hear the difference between the 100 and 200 series, some ath -fc7's for some 'fun' portables, and some hd595's which I love btw. my 595's are a great all-around can that I use for music, games, and movies. I've also got a LDM+ amp and I just got a couple packages today with parts for the desktop pimeta I'm building... I'll have all the rest of the parts by tomorrow.

my next purchase will probably be a grado... that or some akg 81djs... or maybe some koss kcs75's... to play around with modding and recabling before I try to recable my senns. I just need to come up w/ the money... I'll prob have to sell my other portables though

The SR-225 sounds still pretty good unamped too. I think it's fun to run around on head-fi and post there, you should try it too.

I didn't get any cans today like i'd hoped :(. The Grado's were apparently backordered from TTVJ, all I got was the adapter cable. I contacted Tod, they are shipping tomorrow. The A700's didn't make it today either, so tomorrow is pretty much guarenteed.

Not even having them, I am already looking at at amp. I am thinking this will be an expensive hobby. I am looking at a PA2V2, which shoould be able to be had for $50-$60 I think... and should still be very good. Who'd have thunk it... a few months ago, if someone told me I would be spending $400 on headphones, I'd have said not a chance in hell. I spose like my wallet... hell has frozen over :p

I'm running my sr-225 off a pa2v2, sounds great. My source isn't that great though.

yeah the pa2v2 is a great little amp. you can get them new directly from gary for $60 shipped then you'll just have to put your own batteries in . it tends to add a bit more bass. the other amp in the same price range is a LDM+ it is a bit more neutral and you can get for $65 direct off ebay

I did look at the little dot also, but decided this one was a better choice. I wont mind the bit of extra bass...and as lame as this sounds, the black is going to look so much better with all my other equipment that is black. For $60...I know its not the best amp, but its a start.

umm... you can get the LDM+ in black... did you know that? they come in a few different colors, but I've got a black one sitting on my desk right now as I type this. although the PIMETA I'm building will be in a silver Hammond case :D

I know, but I assume my source is worse than my amp (on board sound)

I wish I could afford a better portable amp, but I'm a poor college student and I need to pay for rent, books, and classes! hahahha

I know you can.. i just coudlnt find one. No matter though, I think this amp will suit me fine... dont forget what I am coming from.

I got the A700's in today. They sound GREAT with music, i cant wait to do some gaming. Very coumfy.... they are bigger than I thought they would be. I think I will have no issues wearing these for hours at a time. The Grados shipped today, should arrive Monday :).

Allright, so I just played a quickie game of CSS. Everything I read was right, these ain't music cans, there gaming cans. Damn did they sound great. I found myself blinking every time I pulled the trigger. It was also suprisingly easy to hear where people were coming from. Everything just sounded great.

The fact that they are closed is a little weird for me. I've never owned a pair of closed cans before... and i feel a tad clostrophobic with them on, but I should adjust quickly.

I have never been able to stand headphones unless I had to (on a plane or some such) but it sounds like you had some nice ones.

I have a pair of Senheiser 280s and Sony V600s (both fairly cheap cans) but they suit my purposes fine. I actually prefer the Sony's as they are more comfy, but the Senns aren't bad either. I never use either at home (I have an Infinity 7.1 Modulus system for that).

I love headphones. I have a set of X-530's, and find myself rarely wanting to use them. Headphones sound great, are more confined, and don't bother others like cranking a stereo could.

oh, all you had to do is make a note when you buy one off ebay. (there is only one seller) and they'll ship u whatever color you want

Well that's why! If you actually get nice headphones, then report back to us.
^_^

Anyways, Viper87227. Nice to see you are loving your A700. Get a good headphone for gaming, and it brings you to a whole new level.

I wonder if having used the A700, you will like the SR225 more............. that should be interesting.

The PA2v2 is a great budget amp......... but none the less it's still a budget amp. Don't expect it to be a magical bandage. Time to start researching 600$+ amps.

I am still a little nervous that I may not like the Grado sound, but I look forward to trying them. Well the A700 are good for music, they dont blow me away, so I am hoping the grados will still be a step up in the music department. If fir some reason I am not a fan of the Grado sound, I will do some research and find some other music cans. Maybe I will go back and try the 595;s.

I think that's a chance that we all take with headphones. Don't worry, they're highly resellable or tradeable at head-fi if you decide that they're not right for you. I love my ATH-A900's very much and I would never give them up.

BTW, what kind of source do you have for music?

Grado's coming tomorrow, dunno about the amp, but ill get pics of those too, along with the whole setup, and the redneck headphone rack i did up.

Jamming to the Grado's right now. Not sure what I think yet. They sound great, but not as good I expected. I will wait to do some serious burn in before i cast judgment though.

what model grado's did you get?

Allright.. here's the headphone rack in all its glory. It aint pretty, but i can live with that for the cost of 6 nails :). I will buy a stand eventually, but this will do for now.

What is lacking in your 225s? The pads can change the sound to what you like if you want to tweak around.

I am really not sure at this point... as i said they sound great, but I guess they just dont sound $200 great. I am not reserving judgement yet, I want to give them more than an hours use before I say if I like them or not... along with 20-30 hours of burn in, which will be done in the next few days. They definatly sound better than the A700's for music though.

One thing I will say for certain though, my worste fears were confimed... these arent very comfortable. An hour in, i find myself constantly jumbling them around to find a better spot on my head. Something tells me the next paycheck is funding some c-pads.

EDIT: It also makes me want to buy a bigger hard drive and rip all my music to lossless audio. That should help alot.

If you have some cheap circumaural cans laying around, you might be able to mod your bowls to be more comfortable like I did.

Yep, i saw your mod. I may buy a cheap pair of cans and do that.... but more than likley I am getting some headphile pads

Yea, doesn't it suck. What was john thinking when they used foam pads....... my goodness. What a way to ruine a good headphone. I couldn't stand the foam sandpaper bowls.

Unless you have a very tall head, you will also need some extra height to fit the C pads. most people use the beyer headband which works great.

So, you buy 180$ headphones, and then just to make them comfortable you have to add 120$ worth of mods...... Better really like the sound if you plan to mod them.

Oh, by the way. With the audio technica, you might not want to hang them by just one plastic thing. Best to rest it on something that supports both plastic things.

Any particular reason why? These plastic things are really stiff, I am not really worried that it may warp.
