I've heard a lot from both sides about how solid/crappy these two systems are...

...I also saw today that the 360 has a 52% failure rating X_X

What are you guy's thoughts? and I dont mean "oh the PS3 is best because it has game X" I'm talking just about the hardware.

depends on what you want, really.

Any failure rate listed is going to be about the older Falcon and Zypher systems.
All of the new Jasper systems are rock-solid (mostly because of the die-shrink, so it runs way cooler).
I have one (jasper), so I am partial.
Also is likely (baring M$ suddenly changing their mind) to have Natal.

[PS3]
Older (not newer) versions can run linux
WiFi included (iirc) and bluetooth (again, iirc) included.
Newest (slim) runs really cool, and is... slim?

Both have HDMI
Both can use remotes (iirc. But the xbox360 remotes are often cheaper, and can be used interchangeable with WMC remotes).
Both have NetFlix Instant capabilities
Both have nice LED lights.
 
actually, I have a PS3 slim, and it doesn't run really cool at all. In fact, it runs rather warm.

That said, this thread can be summed up thusly:

NEITHER. Xbox 360 and PS3 have IDENTICAL games, and neither will ever, EVER differentiate its game graphics to such an extent that you'll wish you had the other system instead.

360's were unreliable at launch--today they are fine.

PS3's had more features at launch--today they are slimmer and more attractive.

BOTH consoles are worth owning, and hey, you can actually get BOTH today for less than the price of a launch PS3. So count yourself lucky, skip the flamewar, and enjoy.
 
Well I suppose I'll pipe in for a lil bit. PS3 is easier to upgrade the hard drive, when I say easier I mean you don't have to buy a pre-approved hard drive which is overpriced. any 2.5 in sata HD will work. (someone correct me if im wrong)
not exactly the system itself, controller wise however, sonys has built in rechargeable whereas ms gotta buy the rechargeable separately.

All in all, I'm not really sure where your going with this. I don't know too much about the cpu and gpu for either to comment on that.
 
I went with a PS3 last month...I figured even if I don't game on it as much as I like I could still use the blu-ray. A few years ago the blu-ray wasn't that big of a deal to me, but with price of discs falling fast I think it tips the scale in favor of the PS3.

If you already owna gaming PC, the PS3 is probably the better choice. Otherwise, the 360 is probably better, though paying for Xbox live sucks.
 
My roommates and I have all both and we definitely utilize the 360 much more. The combination of more games and fluid multiplayer through xbox live trumps the PS3.

I purchased an Xbox 360 a little under a year ago. I'm very happy with it (well mostly, except for the XBL gold charge when all I use XBL gold for is Netflix) It's currently living with my 42" TV in the living room with a large (read 30-or-so) games and 2 controllers (and a guitar hero controller I've never acctually used) I also got the HD-DVD drive for it so I can watch HD movies for $1-$5 each.

Around Xmas time I got a deal on a PS3, $102. I ahd to buy my own controller and cables, but it still came to $150 total. less than half retail. I was thirlled. One lieing seller later and I'm sending it in for repairs @ $150 (technically $119 + $29.99 shipping) and after a hassle (see the thread "Sony stole my PS3) I finally get it back and find out my controller was a FAKE from china. (I've since resolved the issue - the seller is giving me a full refund but I still will have to get a new controller) Final cost (pre-new-controller): $279... I saved 20-fluckin-dollars off retail... whoop-de-shit... But, back on track, I got this to go in my bedroom with my 22" TV to stream netflix and videos off my PC so I could calm down before bed.

Anyway, between purchasing and now, I've lost my job and my savings are dwindeling. I was planning to sell the PS3. However, hearing that the 360 had such a high failure rate (not to mention I dont like paying XBL *just* to watch netflix) I'm thinking about migrating my game library over to PS3 and selling the 360.

Even if things pan out and I dont sell either console (my prefered choice, of course, for many obvious reasons) I'm wondering if I need to migrate to PS3 since it's hardware seems rock-solid while my 360 feel like a ticking time-bonb. (And no, I have no clue which Mobo it has, I got it used off ebay)

On the other hand, the PS3 is more expensive to keep up and I'm not too impressed with the menus - XB's Dashboard seems a LOT easier to use and more feauture-rich. I also cant get the PS3 to work with my WiFi so I'm going to have to lay mroe cable through the ceiling... one problem after another. --- I also have a large library of Xbox/360 games (and only 1 PS3 exclusive caught my eye - all the rest of the games I could get for 360 --- though I do have a large collection os PS1/PS2 games that even out the score if we get BC on the PS3 in a few months like rumors say)

So I'm torn between a currently-bad relationship with my PS3 and the possible costs of owning it, and the "danger" of the 360 RROD'ing on me and quite possible having to be repaired multiple times (I was told often it happened twice...? no idea) I'm trying to decide which one to sell if I have to, and if I dont wheather I need to move as many of my games to PS3 and retire my 360 to lightweight streaming and only occasional games so it wont overheat...
 
If multiplayer and online gaming is a big deal to you, then by far the 360 is the better choice (online experience is better, DLC usually comes sooner and is often exclusive). If you plan on using it to do double duty as a blu-ray player, then the PS3 is the only option.

Other than that, there isn't much difference.
 
Xbox has IMO better pad - it fits my hand better, and is more comfortable to use then DS3. On the other hand is much more louder, and can't play BluRay.

I own both consoles and there is not much difference in games on those two platforms, though PS3 exclusives like Heavenly Sword, which are using all PS3 capabilities look much better then Xbox exclusives (notably Fable 2, which looks just like crap :p)

I'd say - check which pad suits you more, what consoles own most of your friends and then pick one. You can't be wrong with any of the choices.
 
Are you a PC Gamer?

If yes, get a PS3.

If you don't have a good gaming rig, get a 360.
 
Both have pros and cons. I own both systems and I use both equally. I would really just look at the exclusive games at this point and decide from there. I recommend 360 more for online play but I've put in many hours on Uncharted 2 multiplayer (PS3 only) just fine.
 
I bought the PS3 mainly because of the blu-ray capability. But after the shock of blu-ray disk prices, I mainly use Tversity to stream content to the PS3 for viewing. I like how multi-media capable the PS3 is and it has proven to be reasonably futureproof via firmware updates. They should have gotten a netflix capability sooner though.

We seriously need a new forum rule regarding 360 vs. ps3 threads. They last forever and never accomplish anything.

If you were buying new I would say stick with whatever system your friends have.

The hardware is on a more or less even playing field. You won't get jack for selling your 360 used so don't bother. You also won't be able to get what you've now put into your ps3 back so there is no point in selling it.

I must not come to this board often enough, I've never seen a 360vsPS3 thread on it... though I see what your saying, everyone is simply repeating themselves (though the concnesus seems to be somewhat leaning towards the PS3 as superior)

Odd, I'm seeing 360s (without any games or extras) elling for $200-$300 (most closer to $200) regularily on ebay and roughly the same for PS3 without accessories. Granted that *is* less than I put into the PS3 (the 360 I practically stole @ $200 w lots of extras BEFORE MS's price drop!) but I wouldnt call $200-$300 "not getting jack" (though to be clear I am favoring keeping both if possible, selling will only occur when/if I cant get a new job before my savings run out)

Any 2.5" hard drive that is 9.5mm thick will work. The 12.5mm drives will not fit :)
 
I bought a brand new Jasper arcade unit at Walmart for $100 during the sale last month. I wouldn't expect anyone to buy a non-Jasper unit these days. Used 360's don't have a warranty and after the last wave of console bans tend to be banned. The only real value you have there is the hard drive.
 
i own both as of now. ive had 360 for sometime but just recently bought a PS3. I am actually not happy with Consoles to me they feel so outdated and I have a hard time getting out of WoW to even play my consoles.

im actually returning my PS3 today for some serious Vibration with the Bluray drive. I had to buy Custom feet to keep it from Vibrating my desk but it still get rid of all the vibration like it should

If your talking just hardware, then obivously PS3. I don't think there is any argument. In the box wifi and blue ray, plus the cell CPU is a lot better than what the 360 has, all for the same price.

The real argument comes from games though. I personally think the PS3 has better exclusive titles than 360, so that's why I own one, since the rest of the games I can play since they are on both.

I mostly use my 360 as media extender since almost every game I have wanted to play on it has come out for the PC now. I seriously haven't bought a game for it since I initially purchased it and bought 8 games with it

Blue-ray
PS Classics and Exclusives are better and developers like Atlus, Nippon Ichi, Nastume dont make 360 Titles
Arcades has a lot of the games I like.

If you are just looking for a gaming console then just compare exclusives and decide. If not and you want a well rounded console like I did well then I am sure it has been said already who offers more for the price tag.

If all you want to do is stream Netflix, then yeah, go with PS3. That said, Free PSN is nowhere NEAR as good as Xbox Live, to say nothing of better than. Xbox Live is a whole other class of online service, and PSN pales in comparison.

I'm not sure I'd worry about Natsume; so far all they've made for PS3 is Afrika (snore). Nippon Ichi's games are tempting though. Atlus DOES make 360 games.

All in all though, I'd say keep your 360 and buy a PS3 *also*. Both platforms have good stuff worth playing.

I half agree and half disagree. I had a great PC gaming rig when I abandoned it for the Xbox 360. As much as I miss alot of the games (RTS, RPGs) I love not being in a dark room of dismay with my face 10" from the screen.

As for which console is "best" (a bit of a stupid arguement if you ask me), both have benefits. I've got a 360, the Jasper's are extremely reliable (failure rate is more like 4% now), and I really like it. I'd love to pick up a PS3 for Blu-Ray and Uncharted/God of War.

Basically I'm wondering how reliable 360 is vs PS3. I've had no problems from my 360 but every *retailer* I've talked to has told me the 360 is a ticking timebomb and if I'm going to see a console, keep the PS3 and sell the 360. However as I said before I have a lot of reasons to keep the 360.

BUT, if it's only a matter of time before I RROD on my 360, I'm better off selling it and porting everything to PS3, despite the other drawbacks (liek PSN sucks compared to XBLG for online gaming... which I dont even do...)
 
At first I played the 360 more than the PS3 but I barely touch the 360 now.. Cacncelled my Live account too.. Totally addicted to some of the Playstation store game exclusives like Pixel Junk Monsters and Mushroom Wars
 
Also I just looked up the info and I do NOT have a Jasper, I have a Falcon... (does that mean I need to unload it ASAP?)

I think we're not understanding each other. What I'm saying is that in terms of the *graphics* each system is capable of, it's pretty much a wash and neither system has the horsepower to so outperform the other that it'll make the competition look like the "weak" system. Think about the difference between, say, a high end Wii game and a high end PS3 or 360 game. You will never, EVER see that kind of difference between PS3 and 360 exclusives or cross platform games.

I totally agree that you might wish for the other system (one way or the other) for SPECIFIC game titles. That's why I said it's worth owning both systems :)

If you have a NEW 360 vs a NEW PS3, it's probably a wash since they're built in the same factory these days.

If they're older (read: older than Falcon) then PS3 is your better bet. Apparently both have issues, though, as a quick search of ebay will reveal. I'm just crossing my fingers that my slim continues working for a good long time, since I was one of the people who had MAJOR issues with the piece of shit launch PS2's and Xbox 360's.

Thats probably what I will end up doing. I just feel my 360 was an overall bad investment spent over $1000 between everything when I first bought it and haven't felt it was worth yet. It also pales in the comparison to my current rig too lol. I might buy a PS3 just to cure my buyers remorse. But I am going wait for an FF13 Edition one that is hopefully not pink....

What I've learned from this generation is this: Early adopters get fucked. From now on, I will be waiting at least a year, maybe more, before buying in. I waited on PS3 (no toy is ever going to be worth a $600 price of entry, sorry) until this winter and, thanks to the black friday deals, effectively got the machine for $199 (It was $299 total, but came with $100 worth of games I would have bought anyway), plus it was slim (I HATE the ugly ass fat model, it's hideous!), which I really wanted.

Also I wanted to wait for slim because I have a friend who told me, "You'll never see a PS3 slim, it's too sophisticated to make it smaller". Yeah, right :)

As far as the 360 goes, don't forget top notch arcades and expansions:

Shadow Complex
Trials HD
Splosion Man
....to name a few

Then expansions like The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony; those could have been games all by themselves. All the Fallout 3 expansions have long been out for the 360. The MW2 DLC is also supposed to be timed exclusive to the 360.

I'm not saying this to tout the 360, just something to consider. I personally have both.

They lost GTA4 exclusivity, but gained Agent exclusivity. :D
 
I just recently sold my xbox 360 that i had since the first few months of it being out... loved it for a long time but for the past year it just sat there and collected dust.

in the past few months ive been in the process of upgrading my home theater equipment, and i have upgraded almost everything (new tv, receiver, speakers, subwoofer) and the ps3 would benefit me way more than my old 360 (didn't even have hdmi)

I picked up a ps3 slim with 7 games during the buy 2 get one free sale at gamestop (MSG4, uncharted 1/2, LBP, Katamari forever, Tekken, GTA4). I honestly haven't spent this much time gaming in a few years. Also i purchased about $30 in PSN games that are almost the only reason i bought this consol (pixel junk monsters, flow, eden, pixeljunk shooter)

For whoever says the PS3 online capabilities are bland and nowhere compared to 360, you forgot about a few things.

-PS3 Home - leaps ahead of the avatar system xbox uses. you can interact with the world, play games within the world, watch trailers and a lot of more interactive stuff.
-Life with playstation - global news channels, weather, folding@home
-Playstation store - tons of demos and tons and tons of arcade games.

I have had no issues playing uncharted and tekken online not even once. I agree that x360 is more organized and solid but ps3 isnt that far behind at all, and its free.

this is coming from a original PC gamer that had a 360 throughout the years.
