PS3 Gaining on 360 – MS Weaknesses Explored

btw why is it you have to pay to play games ONLINE on a 360? ps3 is free, wii is free. MS are forcing you to play p2p games ONLINE! i thought paying to play mmo was bad but MS has taken it to a whole new level

Don't even try to compare Live to Wii's online. That's not even funny man!:D

If you have never used Live, then you wouldn't understand why I think it's worth the cost of a cup of coffee per month. I hate to say use Apple's own terminology, but it does just work as it should. The entire console seems to totally revolve around the use of Live and its integration within the 360 is unmatched IMO.

Oh btw, who said Sony was going to keep Home free if it starts to take off. Do you think Sony is going to stand by and watch all that potential money go out the door when MS is able to charge for it? Did Sony give you a written guarantee saying Home would be free forever? I just don't see Sony doing that. If they do, then they will certainly gain more market share but at this point, I'm calling it a wait and see type thing

LOL you kidding me right? why make a service free AND then charge people later down the line? that doesn't make sence and would piss off customers mate. its like doubling the cost of xbox live :D

By the way - PS3 exclusives -

MGS4
Resistance 2
Killzone 2
Disgaea 3
Persona 4
LittleBigPlanet
FF13 Versus
Gran Tourismo 5
Singstar
God of War III
Uncharted
Ratchet & Clank
SOCOM
White Knight Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles
Tekken 6

.... plus a bunch of others that aren't as awesome.

Guess it's good I don't plan on ever playing any of those games. For me, Halo is a lot more of a reason to buy a system than anything on that list, or even that whole list together.

That's why I bought a 360. :p That and one of my good friends that I game with all the time bought one too. And no, I haven't had any problems with red rings OR noise. It works perfectly.

20gb is so small though. :( I do wish I could put my music on it, and have room to download full games.

And I hook it up to my laptop via ICS to get wireless. No $100 adapter for me. :p

I'll be asking for a PS3 for my birthday, the three main reasons... Blu-Ray, Media Center and Non-propitiatory HD.

I would look into 360 much more closely if they made a Blu-Ray add on player like they had with the HD-DVD, but hardware problems and lack of storage have turned me away. I will then own a Wii for Nintendo games, PS3 for Blu-Ray / media center and gaming computer for everything else.

I count 41 XBox360 games I consider worth buying at this time, along with 48 original XBox games and 8 Live Arcade games. It is interesting to compare this to only 22 PS3 games, but 160 PS2 games and 105 PSX games that I am interested in. PS3 is full of win for backward compatibility, not so much for new games.

the problem with that though is that sony is shooting themselves in the foot by removing backwards compatibility with most new models.

I have had several of Sony's consumer electronics products over the years and I will tell you first hand, they are the king of proprietary hardware forcing consumers to buy over priced accessories to work with their products. Case in point, we use Sony digital cameras at our office and when we need a new interface cable, it's not as easy as going to Radio Shack and buying a mini-usb cable that EVERYONE else uses. No, you have to spend $20 for a stupid proprietary cable. Also, has everyone forgotten about Memory Stick Duo. Everyone else is perfectly content to use SD cards but Sony has to go and make theirs different just to fleece more money from us. You PS3 fanboys crack me up thinking Sony is your friendly console producer while MS is big and evil. Sony is the grand champion of overpriced electronics using catchy phrases like "HDNA" or "Bravia" to help sell their overpriced TV's and electronics that are no better than the other Japanese brands and in some instances, worse. I'll take a Pioneer Kuro or Panasonic plasma over a Sony Bravia any day of the week.

You fellas who are hating on the 360 need a simple lesson in economics concerning supply/demand

If you ever want to be able to afford the next generation console, you better pray that BOTH systems sell huge numbers and make profits. If one jumps out of the business, you will be paying $700-800 for your next console mark my words.

Both systems have their strengths and weaknesses. Stop the fanboy crap and just play what you want to play.

I do have a question though. If Best Buy or Circuit City sell people on a PS3 over a stand alone blu-ray player and some of those people never touch a game, does it really help Sony seeing as how they are losing money on the console in the first place?

Out of all the consoles this generation, the PS3 is actually the console with less proprietary.

- You can openly swap the HD with any 2.5" SATA drive (360 - Only official route is to buy the overprice kit)
- You can use a flash drive to back up data (360 - Buy overprice 65mb card)
- Controllers are charged via mini-USB (360 - Have to buy charge and play kit)
- Open bluetooth connectivity; Headsets, keyboard and mice (360 - Stuck with MS headset or limited to third party)
- Install additional OS; Useful? To some, but the option is there (360 - No such option)
- Memory card slots (Memory stick AND SD) on select models. (360 - None)

The 360 does some things better in terms of proprietary, such as replaceable batteries for the controller. And the inclusion of an IR receiver (what the hell are you thinking Sony?). Can't think of anything else though.

Yes, Sony has the reputation of forcing proprietary in peoples throats, but as far as the PS3 concern it is more open on the accessory side of things than the current consoles out there. And consoles is the discussion here...

I own three consoles and enjoy each one of them.

All this time I thought the xBox360 cost $50 for Live Hahaha. It cost $50 only yearly? Thats not bad at all, but Sony's free online service is better though. Besides I have more real life freinds than internet ones. I never bought an xbox 360 and im the kind of guy who spends alot of money on electronics. The likely hood of me getting the RROD is the main turn off for me. I cant even use my bad ass G25 wheel on the 360. MS wheel sucks ass.

ps3 sucks :p. Only thing I don't like about the xbox 360 is that its super loud (mostly due to the damn cd drive) and we need more resident evil games. Resident evil 5 is coming out though.

I realize that this gen, the PS3 is the least proprietary. Does this mean Sony is turning a corner with this? Hopefully, but my point was more towards the rabid PS3 fanboys who are almost as bad as the Apple fanboys.

Haha OK, true enough. I think all fanboys are the same (annoying) :)

Man I guess I'm in the minority. My 360 gets nightly play where my PS3 sits there folding proteins with the folding@home client.

Yeah Resistance and Uncharted were fun, but that's about all. The PS3 online experience is like going back to gaming on a PC in 1993. And the multiplayer modes in most PS3 games pale in comparison to the fun going on over on XBL.

XBL just is such a superior experience I just don't see the competition.

Help me understand..... I own both systems and want both to succeed but I read these articles from Ars and I just don't get it. I consider myself a hardcore gamer and all my friends are as well. None of us ever say "Hey lets play on the PS3 tonight..." it just never happens.

i have a xbox and i have used live. now answer this. have u ever used xfire or steam? same thing has LIVE but FREE

Same thing as LIVE? :p

Let me ask you this: have you ever used Xbox LIVE? I've used all 3 for years and can sure as hell tell you that they're nowhere NEAR the same.

a one off fee is better for such a system. I mean its no different then steam and xfire which are both free. do remember that PS3 will eventually come out with Home which will be FREE and more feature packed then the current xbox live offering.

to me xbox live is just a software and software's in general dont require a sub fee!
I guess you never heard of the term, SAAS. Google it and educate yourself.

Agreed. All my real life friends play on LIVE. The rest of them I play with on STEAM.

Yea, Sony is not known for their honesty and truthfulness. Fanboys tend to forget that. If any company would go back on their words about this, it'd be Sony. We all know you cant do online as good as Live for free, they just don't. Not to mention Sony is bleeding money with every PS3 they sell and no games bought with it.

i have a xbox and i have used live. now answer this. have u ever used xfire or steam? same thing has LIVE but FREE

xfire, and steam are not the same, they just share features. Steam is mainly an online distribution system, friends and community stuff was added on later. Xfire is IM client with limited downloading abilities, with ability to send game invites. Live is Steam + Xfire.

My 2nd 360 just died. A nice Indian guy gave said they would repair it for free since even though my warranty ran out last December.

I'm looking to buy the MGS4 bundle but after doing some research on PS3.....I can't justify buying it. The only game that looks good to me present and future is ....MGS4. So the only thing worth while to me is the blu-ray. I don't want to spend $500 for a blu-ray player so I'm sticking with my 360 which I'm SURE will die again in 6 months.

Man I hope they send me a HDMI model.

I have used both consoles quite a bit, but I bought a 360 for one major reason: The controller. The d-pad sucks ass, but the controller fits in my hand like a glove and is far more comfortable than the sony piece of crap. The sony controller's thumb sticks are in such an awkward position for me and my thumbs are always slipping off. Then, there is no rumble, which does add to the experience.

Granted, the ps3 has superior hardware for all the reasons already mentioned in this thread, but to me, the human interface to said hardware is far more important.

What games are you guys actually playing everyday on Xbox360 Live that isnt on Computer already?

Then, there is no rumble, which does add to the experience.

The newer controllers have rumble. Although it should have been included from day one, but I think it couldn't be done due to an ongoing lawsuit.

Xbox Live should be free. Being a PC gamer I could never imagine paying to play games online (except for MMO's).

Agreed (since I own a PS3 and all the content is free apart from full games and Qore), I struggle to see why I'm aiding a company to become a giant purely from monthly subscriptions when I already bought the game once or I own the system and I am now paying a form of rent on it?

And I'm primarily a PC gamer, I would never switch to consoles completely because they aren't that good, thousands of titles, a handful of decent games.

Interesting, sounds more like the PC game market that you seem to be so invested in.

lol nothing but 3+ pages of bashing ms.............who woulda thunk it?
LOL, Personally, I shoulda seen this coming.

Goldeneye for the N64 was utter crap without rumble.

Real talk right there. I remember playing with 3 friends and one of the 4 controllers didn't have rumble. Our rule was that the last placed person got the rumble-less controller.

I don't understand all the hate. XBOX360 at this point is golden right now. It's at a point where there are more great games coming out than I have time to play. What more do I need? I would say the same about the PS3, but their game library is still lacking a bit. Most of the great games on the PS3 are multiplatform anyway.

My brother bought an xbox360 2 months after launch. It died last month. It took a total of 2 weeks to get a new one back. (3 if you count the week it took for MS to receive dead console.) What did he do? Experienced real life for a few weeks and spent more time making money and dating chicks.

Mine was bought march of this year and is going strong. One thing people need to to figure out RROD is FIXED. It's not STILL happening with newer manufactured consoles. Remember, their are still millions of consoles still in stock with the RROD issue from inital batches.

You don't have to pay if you don't want to. If you want to play with other people, then you pay to use that service. It's not rent. Rent is a must.

And besides, if you struggle to see why people pay a monthly subscription then you are definitely not one of the millions of people that play WoW. XD

If you think about it, Blu-Ray players cost around $300. The PS3 is basically a Blu-ray player for $400. Thats $100 invested into just the gaming machine with usb charging/wifi/blutooth capability. When you spend $400 on an Xbox360, all that is invested mostly towards the gaming capability. I think the PS3 is the better value overall system at the moment. The Xbox360 has bigger titles, but hey, with time any system can grow a big library. The PS3 has way more growing potential for the future of gaming.

I've always hated this argument used by anyone defending the PS3. You are assuming that the potential buyer wanted a blu-ray player to begin with. Blu-ray is still having trouble penetrating any market, as is evidenced by the latest crop of news reports.

The potential buyer is 90% of the time a GAMER who cares about games more than Blu-Ray movies. So it's actually stupid to buy a gaming console based on the idea that it has blu-ray. Blu-ray doesn't help gaming. Look at all the multi-platform games that came out for both systems, where's all that extra content on the PS3 side?

doesnt matter mate. the ps3 has more or less the same games the 360 has but u get frfee online play and a quieter machine. what does 360 have over ps3?

I dunno, why don't we try FUN games instead of just SHINY games?

Simply- Uno, Fable and Too Human play funner than anything Sony or Nintendo (ugh) has to offer. I would give Pixeljunk Monsters and Eden some kudos, but really, nothing's moderately interested me besides MGS4 due to the nice metacritic score.

What are you high?

For a short list, we have: Uncharted, Resistance, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm, Metal Gear Solid 4. Those are already out. Not to mention Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 that are COMING out.

I forgot Motorstorm. I wanted that too (badly when the proper version came). But now that Pure is coming, it's sidelined. Also, Ratchet was quite nice when I went to play at my friends'.

The others- I'd say they just aren't bringing anything new in. You can find substitutes for those easily. Warhawk fun? Drench me in gasoline plz.

Previously you could say dominantly that the PS2 was the system to get, and no one would have problems with it. Now you have to spin, spin and spin to make it a triumphant (PS2-like) purchase over the 360.

All the others aren't bringing anything new? So, tell me another game that has a riveting story like MGS4, great gameplay, gameplay and cut scenes are the EXACT SAME THING, and has a great online base?
Tell me a game that surpasses the graphical quality of Uncharted, has a great story, and provides 6 rounds of playing through totaling 45 hours, or more? Don't even start Tomb Raider crap, or Indiana Jones.
Tell me a game like Warhawk that has a brilliant online community, is constantly being updated and upgraded, has gameplay to keep you coming back, and has at least 10 dedicated servers up at any given moment?
Tell me a game that is has good graphics, a great story, and replay ability, especially with an awesome online like Resistance? None? Exactly.

Face the facts: You're little shitbox has been overrun since the launch of the PS3, yet you fail to accept it. I think the 33% failure rate of the 360s would be enough to obscure a lot of people from it, but I guess people are just not that smart today.

The funniest thing about these fanboy arguments are when 360 and PS3 fanboys try to talk about how much they don't want or need the other consoles exclusive games.

example: Halo SUCKS!1!!!!!1!!21!11! etc.

I can't be the only one who sees these arguments and then doesn't read the rest of the post.

being a fanboy does that!! Some dude at M$ has a big grin on his face knowing someone started a hate console movement because it keeps business coming back to M$!! In most cases people would pack up and drop a product and sometimes even the company over the failures people have had but yet xbots don't and then brag to other people they have had to purchase two and even 3+ xboxes because theirs keep breaking!!! Then turn to another product and say shit like "your shit sucks"!!
